Laird Hamilton seems like a Comic Book hero

Surfing a 100 foot wave, being towed in by a jet ski, goes down, jet ski rides in to scoop him up but they get tangled up and have to deal with getting hit by huge wave after huge wave. One wave does enough damage to the driver of the jet ski that he’s cut and bleeding out, Laird takes off his wet suit, creates turniquet, swims him and his buddy 800 yard(that is the story) to the jet ski which does not start, he uses something forgot what to rig the jet ski to start, drives the jet ski onto the beach, naked he walks up the beach with his friend, drops him down, waits for the ambulance, then dons another wet suit and head back into the ocean for more surfing.

Heard on the Jon Stewart show excerpted from the book called Waves.

If you don’t think any of this is true watch the movie Riding Giants a documentary on surfing the big waves.

I'd say

he probably drawfs all of this blogs masculinity combined and then he makes lei’s for his wife on their 15th anniversary. Normally I’d hate a man like that, but I’m impressed the human race can still make them like that.

I was surfing in Malibu

In the middle ages, you didn’t just get made a King by popular demand, you had to kill and politic your way to the top. No doubt Laird could handle that too, but perhaps wouldn’t want to! :)

I honestly kind of like the idea of using martin as a utility guy

if not just to give blake some time off and because his injury seems like a tough one to bounce back from while playing catcher.

but not for five Million

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 3, 2010 3:08 PM PST up reply actions

Well I would want him playing as much as possible

the idea would be to get him more starts by not having to have him catch whenever he plays. Blake could use days off.

The problem is that Martin is not a better hitter than Casey Blake. Unless it’s only occasionally, I am not looking forward to Martin’s bat at non-catching spots on the field.

with Martin coming back and only catching 100 games, and not playing any other positions. The question is would Martin want that.

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 3, 2010 3:21 PM PST up reply actions

It could be a bit of a gambit by Ned to get him to come back… look you won’t even have to catch so much! You’ll be playing all over the field! And then meanwhile he catches 90 games and figures off the bench in 10 others, etc.

by LA Taco on Dec 3, 2010 3:23 PM PST up reply actions

This was only interesting

in the spring of 2008 when he got some games at 3rd base but was hitting like a 3rd baseman not a lower tier catcher. I’m sure it is just coincidence but his numbers after he started playing 3rd base in 2008 suck.

It does go to show you, for whatever reason, third base is a really hard position to fill in the big leagues, you can have great minor league numbers but you end up with a bunch of journeymen vets rotating around the league playing third because the numbers show that there is not an abundance of talented players at that position.

When the high point for that position was probably 1960-1985 or so (during that time, Mathews, Brooks Robinson, Ken and Clete Boyer, Ron Santo, Mike Schmidt, Ron Cey,, Bill Madlock, Darrell Evans, Graig Nettles, Doug Decinces, George Brett all played there and I am leaving out some)

For one thing you cannot trade junk for power in the current state of baseball right now

The Red Sox are rumored to be trading their top prospects for Gonzalez, the Braves unloaded their farm system for Teixiera a few years ago.

The Brewers would probably want the same and the Dodgers don’t have those players in their system.

Second, I don’t think the Dodgers want to take on 7-8 million more in salary plus have to worry about 2012. Even if they keep Loney through 2012, he will be cheaper than that. (Fielder plus replacement veteran 1B)

catcher and Gordon

A.J. Pierzynski will receive $2 million in 2011 and $6 million in 2012 on his new contract.

The deal is backloaded so the White Sox can have the payroll space to bring Paul Konerko back. Pierzynski had a down 2010 season, hitting .270/.300/.388 with nine homers, but he still offers a decent bat at the catcher position. The Sox evidently feel that Tyler Flowers isn’t quite ready to take over the everyday job.
Source: Scott Merkin on Twitter

Funk that. Put Gordon and someone on the block for Flowers, the catching prospect. Thats assuming he’s not like Napoli or Conger, destined for 1b. We could use a pure catcher in pre-arb with talent more than the error-prone, speed merchant prospect IMO

I’d rather pay Russell Martin 5 + whatever he was asking for. Or pay someone better 10 million…

So yeah, that’s a starter worthy contract. We’re not signing anyone else and Ellis will be the backup. Just my opinion.

by silverwidow on Dec 3, 2010 5:30 PM PST up reply actions

I have the word

Leverage

he is cheaper than Martin, you trade OBP for HR, maybe even better than what Martin has become offensively, but now have zero upside with a ton of downside

I hate it, but I understand it

by Hollywood Joe on Dec 3, 2010 5:31 PM PST up reply actions

I can’t even understand it. It’s not like he’s Carlos Pena. Barajas is a shitty option to be a full time catcher.

I am now completely convinced Ned Colletti doesn’t even know what OBP. He clearly gives it no weight in his valuation of offense. It’s not even that I’d begrudge him if he said fuck it I’m not giving a guy who peaked early and might not be able to go full time next year $5 million I’ll give Barajas 1.5 million and just deal with it. But he looked at Martin’s BA and said nope not worth it I’ll give the hometown fluke the cash instead.

Playing devil's advocate for a moment

An outsider looking in might say that the Dodgers have overspent on all of their major off season acquisitions thus far (Lilly, Kuroda, Uribe, and now Barajas)…what are the realistic expectations of all these veterans?

by TomasC on Dec 3, 2010 5:51 PM PST up reply actions

I don't know too many outsiders who have said they overspent on Lilly or Kuroda

esp compared to what pitchers are now subsequently getting. Those two deals, whatever happens and whatever the risks, have been greeted pretty positively outside of Dodgerland.

That's why I said MIGHT... :-)

In any case, I agree: I just deal with a hardcore Yankees fan everyday who is suspiciously frugal about teams other than his own. In any case, his main question, which I don’t want to get lost here, remains a solid one: what can we realistically expect from these players we’re signing this offseason?

by TomasC on Dec 3, 2010 5:58 PM PST up reply actions

Yah don't listen to Yankees fans

They are spoiled by lavish spending (and a lot of that money’s gone to waste, too, but that gets lost in all the good players they get and the pennants)…

But realistic expectations specifically for each player? Maybe someone else can quote from an analysis site. But Lilly and Kuroda if given support could realistically be 10 game+ winners, sold 3 and 4 guys. Uribe should provide good defense and some pop at 2nd base, while not a very good OBP. Barajas will provide some pop and if he reverts back to form can usually be decent at throwing runners out, though I don’t find him very mobile behind the plate. And I wouldn’t expect good OBP numbers from him either. I will miss Martin’s better ability to walk.

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

Uribe .260/20/70
Barajas .260/15/55
Kuroda 14-12 3.70 ERA
Lilly 14-10 3.50 ERA

by dodgers4life on Dec 3, 2010 6:02 PM PST up reply actions

Barajas has hit the 4th most HRs as a catcher since 2008

with 47, Brian McCann has hit 65.

Putting aside the contract for a moment for a guy to play 100 or so games a year, he does have that ability to hit the long ball as a catcher

by bhsportsguy on Dec 3, 2010 5:47 PM PST reply actions

It's not a disaster

and he could be better than Martin at the plate – even with all those outs, buckets and buckets of out

its just more than what we were prepared for – he made 500K last year or some kind of nonsense like that

but yeah, he is ugly but he is not with out his pretty parts

by Hollywood Joe on Dec 3, 2010 5:49 PM PST up reply actions

It’s not that I mind having the guy around, and wouldn’t even minded if Ned said fuck it I’ll give Barajas a million and hope that home cooking carries over next year. I just have to imagine he wouldn’t have even filed this high in arbitration. No panel was going to give the guy $4 million for the best 25 games he ever had.

by Mike Dennis on Dec 3, 2010 5:54 PM PST up reply actions

however much they overpaid for him

I am quite sure that 1 million wasn’t gonna do it. I was thinking realistically around 2+…

this is still too much mind you.

by Hollywood Joe on Dec 3, 2010 5:54 PM PST reply actions

Is it the money, it has to be the money because

you really are exchanging Martin’s youth and OBP for Barajas slugging pct.

Barajas was fortunate about the timing of arbitration offer and tender deadlines but even if those were a week from now, I don’t think the situation changes much.

Frankly it’s at least $1M less than Martin would have made and no one could have expected Russell to play more than 100 games next year at catcher.

by bhsportsguy on Dec 3, 2010 6:01 PM PST reply actions

Does this definitely realistically mean

no chance at Martin coming back now?

I think that’s what makes some people sad. I’d still held out hope even if I realize Martin is asking for too much, had 2 crappy years in a row, etc. he’s younger and still has upside though. I would happily combine Barajas power with Martin’s OBP though for a player who more deserves 4mil+ ;)
