A Brief Dodgers Offseason Recap To Date
Nothing is worse than a clip show, but it's a Saturday morning and I wanted to sleep in, so here we are. Here is a quick recap of the Dodgers offseason so far. The Winter Meetings don't even start until Monday, but the Dodgers have been the busiest team in the early going this winter. The Dodgers closed their regular season with 40 players on their 40-man roster, and have made the following moves to date:
Departures (9): Brad Ausmus (retired), Reed Johnson, Russell Martin (non-tender), Trent Oeltjen (non-tender), Vicente Padilla, Scott Podsednik, George Sherrill (non-tender), Ryan Theriot (via trade), Jeff Weaver
Non Free Agent Additions (4): Hector Gimenez, Blake Hawksworth (via trade), Jamie Hoffmann, Luis Vazquez
Free Agent Additions (6; 2 new): Four of the six free agents signed by the Dodgers this winter were here last year, while Jon Garland and Juan Uribe have joined the blue crew. The Dodgers have signed six free agents for a total guaranteed salary of $74.9 million:
| Dodgers Free Agents Signed This Winter | ||||

There are currently 37 players on the Dodgers' 40-man roster.

The monkey is out of the bottle.
They’re sending Casey Kelly to SD as the headliner. A high ceiling arm who struggled in AA. Basically, Chris Withrow.
But if the Dodgers wanted A-Gon, they’d have to fork over the entire farm…and Billingsley.
wow!
Casey Kelly and Anthony Rizzo. That’s great for the Pads. Even trade, in my opinion.
by Julio Nievas on Dec 4, 2010 8:43 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
rizzo is overrated
hes a firstbasemen posting a .800 OPS…
equivalent trade would be withrow=kelly (both sucked in AA as 20,21 year olds)
rizzo=sands — power bats in AA
we dont have anyone like raymond fuentes, but trayvon is better…
would u guys trade withrow sands and Trayvon for adrian?
For a division rival Pads would probably ask for more than that even
Sigh. Sounds like Pads are getting more than those two guys though? There’s at least one more player to be named. I thought they also wanted a ML player too tho?
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
sand/trayvon/withrow for gonz?
in half a heartbeat… if heartbeats are cut in half, and they aren’t…. but you get the idea. heck yes. and i think a couple of those players might turn out to be decent. but gonzales is an in-his-prime superstar tied up for at least a year, who might be wooed by LA…. such players what you hope your farm might produce.
The caption on the previous thread
was very funny by the way, Uribe and Barajas only making one out.

The line that jumps out to me and warms my cold heart
George Sherrill (non-tendered).
Mark Reynolds?
The Diamondbacks are looking for 2 relievers for Mark Reynolds. I know he strikes out a lot but he does have power and plays a position of need. Maybe trade Lindblom and Link for Reynolds then sign Damon for LF.Then we would have a lineup of Furcal,Damon,Kemp,Ethier,Reynolds,Loney,Uribe and Barajas. That lineup looks pretty good to me.
They might be looking for major league relief pitchers
not minor league relief pitchers who are a dime a dozen.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
sorry
if that was snarky, but I tire of trade proposals where players who have at least one excellent skill (Reynolds – power) get traded for fringe players. Yeah he had a .8 WAR last year, lower than Loney’s for example, but he won’t be traded within the NL West for just those guys.
Overqualified in an underqualified world since 2008.
Some teams could handle Reynolds
but we can’t, not with Uribe and Barajas in the fold.
Damon might help since at t his point we need someone to get on base.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Good point on Reynolds.
I’m not sold on Damon. He’s aging and makes Juan Pierre look like Roberto Clemente arm-wise. But you’re correct…someone has to get on!
We need Damon at the top of our lineup to get on. We also need Reynolds becuase we need a power threat to protect Ethier and Kemp so teams can’t pitch around them.
Doesn't Reynolds also suck defensively?
Honestly I see him as a DH for some team that has a lineup, as Phil says, that can handle his flaws.

AGon
was delivered for the Red Sox number 1 and 8 prospects according to HQ, if the deal was only Kelly, Rizzo. Amazing, to bad we were in the same division.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Even if we weren't in the same division
I don’t think our prospects rate as highly, and maybe that is due to the media hype machine that the Red Sox attract, but it seems we haven’t been able to get a top player in his prime, either because we don’t manage our resources correctly or we can’t commit long-term money.
Overqualified in an underqualified world since 2008.
I would have given the Padres our entire farm system for him. See, why are we never the ones making these kinds of deals. For the most part, guys coming in from trades are not costing the arm and leg everyone thinks they would, or the prospects are developing if it looks like they did. Instead we pay a premium for relievers. SMH. Some guy was trying to tell me it would basically cost something like this just to get Josh Willingham, yeah no it’s not going to be close.
Since the firesale has begun, can we please get Ludwick and have him play right and move Ethier to left? I promise not to say anything bad about you Ned if you do this, for like at least a month.
Hopefully one day McCourt realizes that letting Colletti spend his money is a bad idea. At least on offense, since he doesn’t even glance at OBP while making decisions.
if the Dodgers have a bad year in '11
he’ll be gone, so at least it might be a win-win proposition. If the Dodgers make a run at the playoffs but come up short, I don’t know what happens.

Good job so far
Coletti has done a good job so far with the $$ he has used.
SP was biggest gap..he filled it with 3 very good FA
Traded theriot who was good for nothing and got something.
We had a terrible power gap in our lineup..#2 from last in NL in HRs.. and got Uribe and Barajas for a total of $9M( (2011) adding 32 hrs more than theriot/Carroll..martin/ellis gave us…
maybe OBP went down with Uribe and Barajas but at end of lineup who cares.
Now he needs to fill LF power gap with some FA and get a another RP like Padilla..
If he does all that..he did Ok.
How much did Ausmus get from the Dodgers?

Yup. Fine by me.
The Pads surprised last year so maybe they will again, but you can generally count them out as a contender next season, one less team to worry about. Rockies and Giants should again be Dodgers main worries. Don’t mind seeing the division’s arguably most dangerous slugger gone.

The Padres are still a concern because you still have to play those games and still have to fatten up against them. If you take them lightly and the rest of the division beats them, those 18 games could be your whole season.

Of course. I would hope Dodgers wouldn't take them lightly
since they have struggled vs them even when Pads are down. Nothing can be assumed, but it’s preferable to have that team’s best player gone and to feel you can stay ahead of them.

Of course I'm not suggesting I'd rather see Gonzalez still on the Padres
But if the goal is to win a world series, and not just make the playoffs, then you have to like having the best players scattered, rather than assembled in the Northeast.

Right. I'm not happy he'sin the AL East either

one of them did agree to do it anonymously but was lied to. He was going to sue Lanzmann but then died before he could get anywhere with the case.
The other one had be tried and while he was found to be NOT innocent, he was a major witness because he was completely upfront/forthcoming about what happened. I believe he sings a work songs that Jews at Triblinka had to learn.

Andre Ethier chimes in
per Boston Herald:
"He’s one of the better left-handed hitters in the game," said Ethier, who is close friends with Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia. "I don’t think he’s gotten enough credit for the way he’s been playing the last few years, in that park and on the teams he’s been on. He definitely has power to go to dead right-center. I heard they may be moving in right-center a little bit. That’ll definitely play into his advantage. We in LA were trying to get him a few years back. I know a lot of teams were. It’s one of those things where you can’t see him not being a Padre, but it’s a great pickup for Boston."

Some great SB Nation talk I was reading yesterday on the SB Boston site. Just talking Justin Upton , age 23, Capable of WAR 5 to 7 making him a one of a kind, impact guy and trading for 3-4 prospects…not just a case of making up that 5 or 7 in WAR with 3 or 4 guys…I didn’t totally get it but the point relevant was the 3-4 guys you trade, prospect or not, are mitigated by the guys you REPLACE them with. So you get Upton, but you could have other guys in the system or free agency to replace 1,2 or 3 of the guys you trade if your farm is good enough …so you get Upton or a Gonzo and lose a bit but not all and you get that one superior impact guy. Something like that.A league leading type of payroll helps too.
Point here is we have nobody in the system for 3 years capable of 3b and no one on FA but Beltre unless we trade a Winthrow, a Gordon for other 3b prospects…and that RARELY happens…not sure Ned could fathom it.
In other words, give Beltre his 5 or 6 year deal after pretending you don’t love him Ned.
Was It Not Clear To You that The Uribe Signing Was In Part About Filling the 3B Void?
Blake this year, Uribe at 3B in 20012 and 2013. You may not like it, but that’s the plan.

So what's left for LA now?
I’m thinking two of: Jack Cust, Matt Diaz, Jeff Francoeur, Marcus Thames, Tony Gwynn Jr, Lastings Milledge. And Ned might sign himself a reliever.
And would Milton Bradley get an NRI possibly? He did have a sub-.300 OBP; is he a Ned guy now?

per Jack Curry of YES:
Jeter’s deal is 3 yrs, $51 million with player option for $8 million in the 4th yr. Jeter also can earn $9 mill in incentives for 4th year.
I’ve always wondered, if a guy has a player option gets DFA’d before hand, can the player exercise the player option with the new team and have the old team still paying all but the minimum of his salary?
No
The designating for assignment means the option is done, and the old team would owe the player the buyout.

every team in the league now knows the cost in prospects. After this, they’ll know what his salary demands are. They’ll all then look at themselves in the mirror and wonder if they can pull that off. If yes, he gets traded, if not, either a team will trade for him without the extension window, or he’ll stay in SD and become a trade deadline mercenary.

Still like all the deals for the starters and taking care of that now. But then I had no expectation of a big offensive signing.
by bhsportsguy on Dec 4, 2010 4:21 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
I didn't either
But I think it’s fair to say that given what we’ve seen over the past week, signing Berkman for a year instead of Barajas and Uribe could have happened. Now, it’s debatable whether Berkman SHOULD have been signed over Barajas and Uribe, all things being equal. The problem is, given the amounts of cash doled out to the new guys, all things aren’t equal, and I’d much rather have Berkman on the team. Believe me, I hope I’m wrong.
problem is
it’s harder to find catchers and second basemen in this market, especially ones with 15-20 HR capability, so if they didn’t sign Rod B and Uribe we’d still be left with Theriot and 6 mil for a catcher who might not even play 100 games and hasn’t hit with authority since the first half of 2008. There aren’t many options out there.
Overqualified in an underqualified world since 2008.
to be fair to Ned (see? I try)
I just remembered hearing something about Berkman not wanting to play on the west coast a little while back. So perhaps that played into it. Still doesn’t justify all the other money being spent so freely all of a sudden, but maybe Berkman was never really an option.
not sure
his defense in the OF might be laughable, and his bat is eroding quickly, if not his batting eye. The LF question has yet to be resolved, let’s see…
Overqualified in an underqualified world since 2008.
Well if it wasn't obvious before, it's clear now that Ned completely ignores OBP
It’s one thing to debate some of the finer points in Moneyball. It’s another to just disregard one of the most important ideas to enter the mainstream of baseball executives over the past 10 years.
Padres next step has to be dealing Heath Bell..
Then it’ll be Ryan Ludwick, and 24 minimum salaried guys.
Cam Newton is locking up the Heisman today..
I cant see the game but I assume his 51 yard TD pass with 0 time left on the clock at the end of the 1st half was a hail mary..
Toronto Sun believes the Jays are trying to acquire Greinke. A deal that included Drabek, Snider and prospects might get it done.
that would be good for both sides
Toronto might be a really good fit for him
Overqualified in an underqualified world since 2008.
With Berkman gone who do you guys think will be our LF next season? Two guys that I’d want are Carlos Beltran and Josh Willingham.
I just want to get a good leftfielder. I know I’ve talked about it a lot but I think it will be our most important move of the offseason.
I would disagree
Respectfully, when you only have 2 legit starters under your control going into the off-season, the Dodgers needed to deal with that first. Left field might be the biggest decision now, but it was probably between 3rd and 5th in October.

I agree with you BH, though like D4L i hope for a good LF
making sure we had a solid rotation going into ST was a great move. If we had already signed a bunch of bats but no pitchers, I’m sure we’d all be more distressed then we are now.

Grades for each of those FA signings:
Lilly: B-. This contract’ll look good in 2011, but it’s a mystery beyond that. Three years and $33 million is good for a #3 starter, but it remains to be seen if Lilly can be just that as he enters his mid-to-late thirties.
Gibbons: B+. Solid lefty bat off the bench capable of playing first base and outfield, hit pretty well in that role last year, and the contract value was under $1 million? Decent snag, Ned.
Kuroda: B+. You do have to realize that Ned had virtually no competition here; it was either Dodgers or home for Kuroda. I also deduct points for having to pay Kuroda $2 million in 2012 and $2 million in 2013, when he’ll be chilling out with his family in Japan. Still, this so far has probably been the steal of the entire offseason.
Garland: C+. One year and $5 million (with incentives) is a solid get for Garland…of course, the money could have been better spent on the offense, and there’s a vesting option for $8 million that Garland will almost certainly reach, as durability is one of his (few) good qualities as a pitcher. So really, the contract is for 2 years and $13 million, which again isn’t bad, but not good either. Especially considering that we still don’t have a left fielder for 2011 but we DO have four starting pitchers making $5 million or more.
Uribe: C-. Uribe MIGHT be worth the $5 million that we’ll pay him in 2011. He will almost definitely not be worth the $8 million that we’ll pay him in 2012, and there’s a better chance of a Scott Erickson comeback than him being worth the $7 million that we’ll pay him in 2013. (And, obviously, there’s no chance of him being worth the stupidly deferred $1 million that we’ll pay him in 2014, when he will not be playing for us.) The only reason this doesn’t get a D or lower is because I thought Ned bid against himself to get the contract figure up to 3/$21…but it turned out the Giants offered 3/$20. So great, it wasn’t a total disaster, just a disaster. Thanks, Ned.
Barajas: D-. For probably about $1-$1.25 million more, the Dodgers could have gotten a 27-year-old OBP machine who throws out 35-40% of attempted basestealers every year (albeit one who IS coming off an injury and who hasn’t been hitting all that well in recent years but who is young enough and talented enough to rebound). Instead, they decided to go with the 35-year-old career .239/.284/.412 career hitter who had one good week for the team last year followed by four terrible ones. Again…thanks Ned. So much.
Cumulative GPA: 2.4 (C+). Way to go Ned, you haven’t changed a bit.
Just a note
if Garland’s option does in fact vest, by him pitching 190 innings in 2010, then he will also have earned another $3.525 million in incentives, and the total deal will be two years, $16.025 million.
And if Garland
Does have his option vest, he will not be necessarily be over priced for 2012.

I
Believe Martin has to prove he can still play after recovering from a broken hip. I don’t share the same optimism that hecwill even be able to repeat his 2010 numbers.
by bhsportsguy on Dec 4, 2010 5:43 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Uribe
is the only IF we have signed past next year I believe, so he’ll be useful as they revamp the infield as (hopefully) one of Gordon/DeJesus emerges for 2012. I think it’s a solid B signing, unless he turns into 2010 Ronnie Belliard, which could happen.
Lilly was good, he’s reliable and that’s a decent price as long as he’s healthy. He’s a poor man’s Glavine playing at home.
If Garland’s arm falls off, it won’t be much of a sunk cost for a really good 5th starter.
I’d rather have Rod B at 3.25 right now rather than Russ at 6 with all that uncertainty, but this also depends if they get a run producer for the OF. Still, it seems Ned did overpay due to a panic situation.
Overqualified in an underqualified world since 2008.
I generally agree
But there a few points worth noting:
We don’t know that Lilly won’t still be a relatively good contract beyond 2011. The way he pitches, there’s not THAT much reason to believe he won’t be able to keep going for a few more years.
“there’s a better chance of a Scott Erickson comeback than him being worth the $7 million that we’ll pay (Uribe) in 2013” With inflation (seriously!), 7 million in 2013 might not be so disasterous if Uribe can be the Uribe of ‘09/’10 (assuming he can even be that guy in ‘11 and ’12). It won’t be cheap, but it won’t be a disaster. 34 isn’t THAT old in baseball terms. My concern with Uribe is that he may be just a little older than he says- you know how it goes with players from that part of the world, and I was SHOCKED to learn that he was only 31 now.
And while I agree 100% with what you say about Martin, as BH points out, you can’t really brush off the “albeit one who IS coming off an injury” part. We still don’t know how serious it is. But if he does bounce back from it, high school kids may be answering “Barajas:Martin” to the “Pierre:Werth” question on the analogy portion of their SATs. (They still have SATs in school, right?)

Beltre or Werth
With Gonzales now in Boston, maybe difficult for Boston to sign Werth and very doubtful they will sign Beltre. If you think the Oakland offer for Beltre was true 64 million for 4 years abd Werth figures to be about 15 million per, who would you rather have the Dodgers go after? My vote is still for Beltre.
I'd rather have Werth
regardless of your opinion of Casey Blake, at least we HAVE a 3B. As of now, we don’t have a LF, and Werth would make our defense superb.
The monkey is out of the bottle.
But beyond this year...
3B is really bleak. Much easier to fill the OF hole in FA, by a trade, or with a prospect.
@neufaustcan
I would also take Beltre. Since the Dodgers have no promising third basemen in the pipeline, I think getting a very good player to fill that spot for a few years would be a huge priority. While we certainly don’t have any really highly rated outfielders either, we’ve got at least a few that have a shot at being decent.

Also Jed Hoyer didn’t work for us and so wouldn’t cheat to give us an advantage.

When Hoyer said he’s not gonna listen to any more offers Theo realized he could get him for nothing at the trade deadline.

They are still negotiating
per Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe:
The 2 p.m. deadline for signing Adrian Gonzalez to a contract extension has come and gone, but an extension of the deadline could have taken place. According to one source familiar with the talks, some progress is being made therefore it would reason that the sides would continue to hammer something for the remainder of the afternoon.
Major League Baseball grants up to 72 hours for some sign and trade deals and if the parties are close, nobody is going to tell them they can’t keep negotiating.

I’m listening to the game.
Was that a personal foul on Suh just a moment ago?
I realize that was the call, but what were your thoughts?
In real time
it looked like a shot to the back of the head when Cutler was running, but replay showed more of a push. With how fast it happened, I could see how the refs called it that way.

Poor poor Lions
now go out next week and beat the Pack!!

LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!
it was up there
but Cutler was past the line of scrimmage and was not sliding

This would muck things up a bit
per Phillies beat writer Todd Zolecki of MLB.com:
Sources told MLB.com this afternoon Werth’s agent Scott Boras was close to a deal with the Washington Nationals on a multiyear contract. Terms of the deal were unclear, but the Nationals figure to have money to spend after losing free agent Adam Dunn to the Chicago White Sox. Werth would help replace Dunn’s bat in the middle of the Nationals lineup.
Wow
Better them than some big team or a division rival. Better us than them, mind you. But still. Huh. Cool.

He’s thought to be seeking a contract similar to the seven-year, $120 million pact that Matt Holliday signed last winter.

yep
they’re certainly targeting 2012-13 with Strasburg back and possibly Harper, they’re going for it then. By his 37-38 years that will be like the Helton contract.

Or not.
Weird day, AGon not going to Boston after all. What else will happen! Cliff Lee to the Orioles!

I’d love to get Beltre. Would 5yrs/65M be enough?Have Gibbons start in LF with Blake to platoon with.
For Beltre to come here, Gonzalez to Boston has to get done, removing the Sox from the party. Beltre doesn’t want to play in Oakland, so anything is possible. But, again, it’s foolish to think about these things since it won’t happen.
Those three give us more power than we had last year. I think the offense will depend on Kemp and Ethier living up to their potential which I think they can. This is a big year for Loney also becuase Sands could be ready to take over for him by next season. I think now we will get someone like Damon to hit #2. If Furcal stays healthy and Kemp and Ethier bounce back I think we can be one of the best teams in the NL.
I think
we should wheel Ned Colletti into the Winter Meetings lobby ala Hannibal Lecter. It would be dramatic, make a point, and possibly get us a sit-down with the agent for Arthur Rhodes.

Not sure what is up with Connector. And my nieces are off limits. Sporky hates you because you adorn the cover of Jon’s book."
3 questions
1. Is there a no-trade clause?
2. How does it breakdown by years?
3. Any deferred money?
