Jayson Werth Signs With Nationals, Shakes Up Free Agent Market

Jayson Werth is now a Washington National (Photo: Streeter Lecka | Getty Images)

If everyone good eventually ended up on the Yankees or Red Sox, things would be boring. So, kudos to the Washington Nationals to shocking the hell out of the baseball world by signing Jayson Werth to a seven-year, $126 million deal.

Carl Crawford is smiling like a Cheshire cat right now.

The winter meetings begin in earnest on Monday.

I stare into my crystal ball...

…and see after we trade Loney for another okay starter who’ll pitch from the bullpen, Ned Colletti will go out and sign Carlos Pena for 4 years 56 million. Then everybody will bitch and moan, and cry loudly about why didn’t we just keep Loney. Then I will try to return that Loney jersey I bought for 20 dollars at Dick’s sporting good eight months ago for store credit.

Saw another tweet (can’t find it now) that said the Boston nightmare scenario would be for Crawford to sign with Detroit (so their V-Mart compensation pick wouldn’t fall one more round), for the Gonzalez deal to completely die, and for Beltre to sign elsewhere :)

Next, why not a picture of Pedro Martinez wearing Dodger blue? Or, hell, even better: a split pic of Pedro in Montreal gear and Delino in Dodger gear? Werth will always, to me, be the guy who couldn’t stay healthy for longer than half a season as a Dodger…and then moved to Philly and delighted in whipping our asses two years in a row in the NLCS. So please, post a new pic with Werth in a Philly uni, or something.

4. Who are we most likely to see riding the tea cup ride at Disney World?: Los Angeles Dodgers GM Ned Colletti. Not only was he one of the quietest GMs at the 2009 conference, but he already got some offseason work out of the way by acquiring Juan Uribe(notes) and Jon Garland(notes) while re-signing Ted Lilly(notes) and Hiroki Kuroda(notes) and shipping Ryan Theriot(notes) off to St. Louis. Given those tasks, he’ll have enough time to take in Epcot Center, too.

The Rays did it primarily because

they had 5 starters stay healthy and pitch near 200 innings in 2008 and 2010. Actually, that is also how the Twins generally stay in contention.

For a small market team, you have to be able to get solid and durable starting pitching because your resources don’t allow you to go out and get more pitching once the season starts.

So if Werth is worth this...

…how much did Ned really overpay for Barajas and Uribe, and how much did he just reflect the developing market? And, when will Burrell get a new agent?

It seems unanimous

…signing Uribe at 3 years/$21 million is MUCH better than signing Werth at 7 years/$126 million. With the differences in the contracts, the relative quality of the two players is almost irrelevant.

by CanuckDodger on Dec 5, 2010 4:07 PM PST reply actions

I love this opening from Ken Rosenthal

in his column about the Werth deal:

A rival general manager, upon hearing that the contract was for seven years, offered this reaction to Jayson Werth’s signing with the Nationals:

"Absolutely bat—— crazy."

And that was before the GM even learned that the contract was for $126 million, an average of $18 million per season.

by Hollywood Joe on Dec 5, 2010 4:15 PM PST up reply actions

Which has nothing to do with either of those players.

by regfairfield on Dec 5, 2010 4:22 PM PST up reply actions

by regfairfield on Dec 5, 2010 4:26 PM PST up reply actions

There Was Nothing The Nationals Could Do To Be Better Than The Dodgers

…or more pertinently, the good teams in their division. Which is why the deal doesn’t even make sense for them now, in the short run, let alone when Werth declines, which at his age, shouldn’t be too long off.

by CanuckDodger on Dec 5, 2010 4:55 PM PST up reply actions

Right

but I don’t think Werth signed just for the money, I do expect them to be a competitive team in the near future. Given what we saw of Strasburgh before he stopped pitching he has the talent to be the best pitcher in baseball, Harper killed for a JC guy in the AFL, that was ridiculous. Zimmerman & Zimmerman is not a Law firm but the two best Z players in baseball. Desmond is a decent young SS. Willingham can hit. Storen can close.

But

the Dodgers would have been better with Werth then Uribe. I don’t see the point of your comment. They didn’t have as much to start with but I will say that the Nat’s in 2013 will probably be better with Werth then the Dodgers will be with Uribe.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 5, 2010 4:22 PM PST up reply actions

My Point Is That Because Of The REST Of The Players On The Two Teams...

…the Dodgers are going to be better than Nationals. It IS NOT about Werth vs Uribe. This is baseball, not tennis or boxing. The point is to have the best team. A contract like Uribe’s doesn’t screw the team. Werth’s contract will be an albatross very soon.

by CanuckDodger on Dec 5, 2010 4:28 PM PST up reply actions

Soon being probably four years

Uribe’s might be an albatross in year one.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 5, 2010 4:30 PM PST up reply actions

Why would it be?
Would you rather pay 18 mils a year to Werth.
Or give it to Uribe, Barajas, and Garland?

Here’s the difference…I cant find a minimum salaried OF that can come close to Jayson Werth.

But I can find some minimum salaried level players to replicate Uribe, Barajas, and Garland..

by Joey Joe on Dec 5, 2010 4:31 PM PST up reply actions

Whats it matter?
Budgets are made on a year to year basis.

by Joey Joe on Dec 5, 2010 4:34 PM PST up reply actions

if that's true

then why are we worried about the 3 year deal? You can’t go and say, “OH NOES, IT’S A THREE YEAR DEAL” and then turn around and say “No, the length of the contract doesn’t matter to this player because budgets are made annually.”

This has more to do with perceived value; i.e. Werth >>>> Uribe.

by Maddz on Dec 5, 2010 4:36 PM PST up reply actions

You wont find me complaining about the length of Uribe’s contract.

Its the quality of the player that determines whether its justified to give them the amount of years.

by Joey Joe on Dec 5, 2010 4:38 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not arguing that Werth

at 7 years 18 Million would have been a good deal for the Dodgers, but I do think it was okay for the Nationals to do it, and that even if Werth is Werthless in four years it will not hamstring the team, while it would have hamstrung the Dodgers.

You seem to be only talking about players

and not payroll, the Nationals have a huge gap they can still spend on Payroll even after Werth as they continue to build a competitive team for the future while we will soon find out how much the Dodgers have for the present when we see who is our LF for 2011.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 5, 2010 4:33 PM PST up reply actions

Yes

but this is a franchise who has to start proving itself now before the fan base loses interest. I think this is a great signing for the franchise in that he was one of four premier players on the market and they reeled him in,. They can worry about 2015 in 2015.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 5, 2010 4:39 PM PST up reply actions

In Other Words It Makes PR Sense. Basebal Prospectus Is Always Deploring Those For Good Reason

The Nationals need to do the un-sexy work of team building, the way the Rays did. A big money player isn’t going to win them anything now, so the future is all they should worry about.

by CanuckDodger on Dec 5, 2010 4:43 PM PST up reply actions

But they will be good while Werth

is still under contract, I didnt’ say it was a PR move, I think this franchise is going to move quickly and be competing by 2012 at which point Werth will be a big part of the team.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 5, 2010 4:48 PM PST up reply actions

And the Cardinals with Pujols are going to better than the Dodgers with Loney..

I’d rather have Pujols at 25mils a year than Loney at 7.
Likewise Werth ahead of Uribe.

by Joey Joe on Dec 5, 2010 4:25 PM PST up reply actions

He’s not.
But he’s a hell of lot better than Juan Uribe.

by Joey Joe on Dec 5, 2010 4:32 PM PST up reply actions

And yes, I think he’s worth 11mils more than Uribe.

Put it another way:

Uribe + ? > Werth

by Joey Joe on Dec 5, 2010 4:33 PM PST up reply actions

In 2010, Ted Lilly

Werth: 5.0 WAR (Fangraphs)

Uribe: 3.2
Lilly: 2.3

In 2009, that duo led Werth 6.8 to 4.9

For just about anyone else probably a terrible contract for the Nat’s who have no payroll they might be regretting this in four years but by then they might have built a perennial contender since the still have plenty of money next year to give them another starter to go with Stras/Zimmerman.

Hmmm

Zimmerman is only 25, you must think he’s older then he is. I think anyone would take the Glaus years of 27 – 31 without the injuries because Zimmerman doesn’t get hurt.

But I don’t see how Crawford is any better then Werth. Both are great defensive outfielders, Both are great base runners, one guy has power, one guy has speed, but of the overall packages I’d think it is a draw except Crawford is younger so if the is the point then I might agree but how valuable will the speed guy be in five years.

I go to other boards for the teams I support in other sports all of the time. I was active in our game threads this year for most of the games. I just want to thank you guys for not being the most negative people on the planet. I get so tired of reading what some of the fans of the other teams I support say on these free boards. I realize that each person is entitled to their own opinions and such, but fans of other teams are a lot more reactionary than the Dodger fans on here. If this board were like others, there is no way that I’d come on here as much as I do. It wouldn’t be a loss to the Dodger fans around here, but I would miss good information because of all of the negativity.

Thanks again guys.

by regfairfield on Dec 5, 2010 5:26 PM PST up reply actions

by dodgers4life on Dec 5, 2010 5:29 PM PST up reply actions

Not a ton, but since we just swapped out Russ for Rod Barajas over two million I’d doubt we can afford him.

by regfairfield on Dec 5, 2010 5:33 PM PST up reply actions

I think we can afford him. We would probably sign a LF for about the same money Willingham makes. I think because Martin didn’t take our offer we quickly signed Barajas so we wouldn’t be left with nothing at C.

by dodgers4life on Dec 5, 2010 5:37 PM PST up reply actions

I have a feeling

that the Dodgers are looking for a stop gap guy in LF, as there are two guys in Sands and Robinson who could compete for an outfield spot as soon as 2012.

"Heroes get remembered, but Legends never die."

by Tommy Blackjack on Dec 5, 2010 5:39 PM PST up reply actions

Willingham is a free agent at the end of the year. I think we could sign him to an extension of 1 to 2 years to allow both guys to develop more and be ready to contribute when they make it to the major leagues. I would also try and go for Luke Scott who is a similar player and would allow both Sands and Robinson to develop more. I would try and go for one of those guys 1st before going after someone else like Johnny Damon.

A few interesting observations.

1. Jim Tressel is a tool. Stanford 6 behind Ohio St and their POS schedule? Please.

2. I was actually impressed with the votes of most of the name coaches. While they may have elevated teams in their conference just a bit, I didn’t see anything outlandish. I coach in the SEC and lost to Auburn so they’re #1 and Oregon’s #2. I can totally support that line of thinking.

3. I didn’t know Howard Shnellenberger was on the Raiders still alive.

UO or AU?

Who you got?

Honestly, I don’t know. It’s a real toss up. Both play fairly similar schemes, as in they use the read option a lot. Auburn have some qualities I like, as does UO. I don’t believe the game would be decided by Cam Newton, I believe it will be decided by Auburn’s run defense. I liked what I saw against Alabama, Chizik really studied them and schemed extremely well against Bama’s run offense.

I’m picking Auburn

Why would Billy Beane tender a contract to Kevin Kouzmanoff?

I was looking at the non-tender list and was shocked to see this dude get tendered a contract. He’s a terrible baseball player, he has a history of being terrible…and yet he keeps getting handed starting jobs.

Are there really no third basemen anywhere that could replicate a ..258/.302/.425 line (which is his career line).

I’m beginning to believe Reg’s point a couple weeks ago when he said all Gms are stupid. The only differences is that some of have the money to make up for mistakes, or others have the fortune of drafting superstars.

our 3b and outfield

I know many would think it crazy, but assuming the Dodgers can’t bring Beltre back, would love to see the Dodgers take a chance on Matsui in LF as a platoon. Price would be right. His OBP is still good and you might get 20 HR’s out of him. While defense is shot he still has a good arm, and has part of a platoon to play no more than 80-100 games, wonder if he could do it.

He would DH against the AL, start then go by match up. Obviously he is a lefty, which can’t make it a pure platoon with Gibboons, but far better than bringing back Pods.

I really really don't think he can play the field

LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!

agree

he could play the field a few years ago with the Yankees, realistically, and his knees would be shot fast

Wow…Harbaugh passes up the 50 yard FG to tie the game to go for a 4th and 2…they dont get it and lose.

4th and 2...

I can see why he would go for it

apparently he has bad knees

Overqualified in an underqualified world since 2008.

He has no meniscus in either knee.

"Save that for the girl chat rooms. No here cares that you are sentimental and sweet. Jose [sic] already passed on you, Dodger SF is having a mid 20’s relationship crisis living in a town where she can’t love anyone because they are either gay or Giant fans, Maddz is stuck in Theology hell, and Teal is married. Not sure what is up with Connector. And my nieces are off limits. Sporky hates you because you adorn the cover of Jon’s book."

FYI

Heyman said on MLB Network that while the Adrian Gonzalez extension likely won’t happen until April, he has heard it will be a 7-year extension (2012-2018) for $161 million ($23m per year).

Whats the reason for waiting until April?

I was honestly expecting more.

I’m still expecting Pujos to be 30 million + a year for a decade worth of work.

A fascinating Werth/Dodger "what if"

What if A.J. Burnett’s fastball was another inch out over the plate?

Werth doesn’t break his wrist. He probably doesn’t struggle to a .234/.338/.374 line in 2005. Maybe he immediately becomes the guy from the 2007-2009 Phillies, and maybe that breathes life into the horrible offense of the 2005 Dodgers. Maybe that team actually manages to stay in the race or even win the division, and maybe Paul Depodesta keeps his job and we never have to hear the name Ned Colletti. And since Depo and Ned had polar opposite views on how to build teams, obviously you’d have to re-write everything that happened from 2006 to now. Makes you wonder.

1 big thing that I worry about in this scenerio

No Kershaw. Of course we could have taken someone else who might be pretty good for us under different circumstances, but who knows. Kershaw is my favorite Dodger, and best player on the team and could be a superstar (though I’m sure he’ll never get the respect he should). Yes things may have been different, and with Werth on the 08 team the outfield still would have been great, but no Manny for sure. Maybe that means we trade for a 1B instead, but Loney still had potential back then.

Interesting to thintk about, but biggest thing to me is no Kershaw, and I don’t want a Dodger team without him.
