You Down With OBP?
So far this offseason, the Dodgers have signed five offensive players:
- Jay Gibbons
- Juan Uribe
- Rod Barajas
- Tony Gwynn
- Dioner Navarro
Gwynn and Navarro are pending physicals, but will be official soon enough. Anyway, in 2010 those five hitters combined to hit .233/.299/.395 in 1,475 plate appearances.

Stats sometimes lie
Uribe Barajas and Gibbons will get most of the AB’s next year in this group. Last year these 3 had 890 AB’s and had 40 2b’s and 45 HR’s between the 3. About 1 in every 10ab’s will result in either a double or HR!
If Loney, Ethier and Kemp improve a bit and Furcal stays healthy, this added offense will helpl. It ain’t perfect and I might have done things different, but you have to look at these guys as a part of the team…However, they can’t sign Pods

two top tier offensive players were picked up by the same team during the same offseason? Yankees blew their wad on AJ, CC & Tex, but I can’t recall two players of Crawford & AGon’s caliber going to the same squad during the same off season.
I feel like they sucked out quite a bit of air in the Yankees sails.
"They will never ketchup to all of the energy that I've mustard"
as busy as we have been
our moves are so minute compared to these other additions, and even the moves we have made are for players who notoriously have very low AVG/SLG/OBP :(
I just can’t see us standing pat and expecting to compete, there’s no way. Even if our pitching is stellar, there is no way to put up runs like some of these other lineups that are built.
I don’t want to complain here, but either we need to come to terms with the fact that we are not going to be a very strong team, or we need to make a comparable offensive addition (and I don’t see that happening.))
I think I would be more accepting of this fact if we were a small market club, but we’re not.

"They will never ketchup to all of the energy that I've mustard"
Everyone says that every winter
after they make all their moves, but they dont’ have a huge number of WC over the last ten years. Yankee’s add Lee, they lose Pettite. The Red Sox add AGon/Crawford but they have lost Manny/Ortiz so they are no better they used to be and that pitching to me is still a huge ???
Both of those teams still need to beat the Ray’s pitching, who while losing Crawford add the exact same kind of player in Jennings, they add the best pitching prospect in baseball when Hellickson takes to the mound, they still could move some pitching for hitting. Hopefully Manny ends up there as a DH.
I’m not ready to had either of those teams the crown yet.
You can be (incompetent and a nice guy), you can be (competent and an asshole), but if you are an (asshole and incompetent), your only future is to be Keith's boss otherwise you are unemployable
Mine was a little too bold of a statement
I realize that now. Wouldn’t you attribute a lot of the Ray’s success to their succession of top picks? Their payroll certainly isn’t the “it factor”. Then again payroll isn’t everything. I’m finally reading that money ball book and it’s kind of crazy what the A’s were able to pull off. The Ray’s are having even better results because of their draft positioning in the past.
"They will never ketchup to all of the energy that I've mustard"

They did lose Beltre
so they have only gained + 1
but at what cost. Those contracts would kill a normal franchise. Going 7 years and all that money on Crawford, Yikes
You can be (incompetent and a nice guy), you can be (competent and an asshole), but if you are an (asshole and incompetent), your only future is to be Keith's boss otherwise you are unemployable
Yeah, but........
Teams that sign Beltre suck for the next two years
I'm sayin' "What's in it for me?"
It is pretty crazy
I really, really like both Werth and Crawford, but there are definite questions. With Werth, he has only qualified for the batting title twice, and Crawford is a guy whose value comes in large part from the secondary things that are hard to quantify (defense, baserunning).
I'm partial to Crawford Eric, so my opinion is skewed
back in 2005 I made the statement that if I was going to start a franchise my first pick would have been Crawford (or Pulhos of course). So I really value what he brings to the table, far more than most people.
"They will never ketchup to all of the energy that I've mustard"
This is always a great discussion topic. If you were to have a fantasy draft to build a franchise, who do you choose.
I always end up back at Evan Longoria or Mauer. Though I’d no longer go with mauer because of his contract.
Disregard females, acquire currency.
If contract is part of the discussion
and you have a limited amount of money to spend to build such a franchise
then I think Longoria is by far the number one pick.
You can be (incompetent and a nice guy), you can be (competent and an asshole), but if you are an (asshole and incompetent), your only future is to be Keith's boss otherwise you are unemployable
even if you didn’t have a small payroll, let’s say you had 100mil to spend, I think you still go with Longoria. Maybe a guy like Votto, but he plays a position where I could pick up someone marginally worse later on. 3B is barren. My only other idea would have been Carlos Gonzalez. I like starting with middle defenders, C SS CF.
Disregard females, acquire currency.
Longoria would probably be my choice today
but back in 2005 it was Crawford.
"They will never ketchup to all of the energy that I've mustard"
Not that long ago
Grady Sizemore would have been in this discussion.
Hanley Ramirez has to be considered, esp if he sticks at SS.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
A couple years ago it always went back to Hanley Ramirez, but he’s an ass. I’m more looking for someone who is team controlled or making a low long-term salary.
Disregard females, acquire currency.
Yeah, if you’re inheriting the contract, you have to go Longoria. I’d probably take Heyward and Posey over HanRam.
forgot about the new crop. I’d pass on heyward because of the abundance of corner OF types, but Posey would have to make me pause on Longoria. Why the Giants didn’t offer him a Longoria contract the second he came up is beyond me.
Disregard females, acquire currency.
Are there concerns
about Posey’s ability to stay at catcher?
LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!

Crawford and Werth
are very good complementary players getting paid now like superstars. If Ethier has two more great seasons, imagine what he’ll command. And so on, and so forth. Makes it harder to keep good players, even if you’re a quality franchise like the Phillies with a high payroll.

LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!
But
Werth + Facial hair > Dunn + clean shaven, according to their GM
Overqualified in an underqualified world since 2008.
I agree the money is too high and the length too...you're totally right there
but they are getting a deal done and it’s for a player who has a very productive track record. I don’t see Crawford falling off the map in a couple of years like some other high priced free agents (way too many to list).
"They will never ketchup to all of the energy that I've mustard"
I fully expect Carl Crawford to be Juan Pierre in 4 years and the Sox pay him 60mil over the last 3 years for him to chill in LF.
Disregard females, acquire currency.
He will never be Juan Pierre
because he has some pop. If anything his speed will slow down (like Damon for example) and his BA/OBP and SB’s will go down, but he will focus more on hitting the ball further.
Good comp

LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!
I think Lee is great
but I spent an hour with my buddy (the Yankees fan) this morning doing a comparison, position by position, between the two teams and we couldn’t determine a clear cut winner.
Plus I would like to make the argument that we yet to see AGon’s true power potential because he’s played half his games at Petco. I mean Beltre is a great player but his stats improved exponentially (spelled wrong?) once he moved from Safeco to Fenway.
"They will never ketchup to all of the energy that I've mustard"
My take (which is far from official) is that they just added a Johnny Damon in his prime (Crawford) and a power hitting 1B who could go on a Dunn like string of 40+HR.
When looking at their rotation they are strong 1-5 and although slightly inferior to the Yanks (if they add Lee), they will still be competitive pitching wise to say the least.
"They will never ketchup to all of the energy that I've mustard"
Even if the Yankees add Lee, I think the Red Sox rotation is better. Sabbathia/Lee at the top is real strong, but after that it gets shaky. Burnett hasn’t looked great, Hughes was very good for the first part of the season, and who knows who will fill out the back. Red Sox may not have the dominance at the front of their rotation, but 3-5 they’re better.
Best players were
Werth – Nationals
Beltre – still out there but no way he’s headed for Boston or NY so someone else is going to get him
Dunn – White Sox
Crawford – Boston
Lee – FA
Lilly – Dodgers
Kuroda – Dodgers
Uribe – Dodgers

Agreed
What long term deals (lets say 6 years or longer) did a team ever get the full value of the player? Jeter?
Okay
but those are HOF in their prime when signed. I’d say none of these players are close to that caliber. These are good to very good players getting ridic contracts, coming off of career years.

6+ deals that worked out
Pujols signed for 7/$100m (2004-2010), plus an option for 2011 that was picked up
Manny signed for 8/$160m (2001-2008) with Boston
Rolen signed for 8/$90m (2003-2010) with Cards, and played with 3 teams. He only averaged 123 games but I would still say success
Bonds’ first contract with SF was epic. I can’t remember if Maddux’s first deal with Atlanta was 6 years (I don’t think so).
I started writing a list
I had Pulhos and Manny then stopped typing because I couldn’t remember if K. Brown would count
"They will never ketchup to all of the energy that I've mustard"
It's tough
The total value the Dodgers got from Brown probably makes it worth it, but the fact that he was out of commission for roughly a year and a half of the five he was here are major red flags against the deal.
But in the last two years of that contract
Brown pitched and started 22 and 13 games (for the Yankees) and was ok (110 ERA+) and stunk (65 ERA+) respectively, so he didn’t earn it.
The Dodgers got from Jeff Weaver what they hope to get from Jon Garland the next two years – make all your starts and be around 100 ERA+. I don’t think the Dodgers got total value from that contract, though they got a lot closer to it than many people think.

Nice Pull
I don’t really count Pujols though because that bought out a couple of his arb years IIRC. Manny, Rolen, Bonds & Maddux are all good though. And I guess Jeter and ARod.
So basically unless you are a HOFer or Scott Rolen or Magglio Ordonez you shouldn’t get a deal longer than 5 years.
sounds like a good rule of thumb
unless it’s for a Kershaw to buy out arb years….right Ned?
"They will never ketchup to all of the energy that I've mustard"
Here's what I think
If you’re only good enough to make 11mil/year on the open market, you’re either a marginal player in a weak market, or a good but not great player in a strong market. If you’re not a great player, no one should be giving you more than 3 years. No matter the age of the player.

Kemp I pay this year and take him to arb before 2012 and see how the season goes, and if he’s had a good year and a half, extend him.
Kershaw I would give 84/7 right now.
Billingsley I would offer 50/5 today.

For a catcher that turns 27 in Feb, switch hitter complementing the RH 35 year old, a guy that delivered 3 wins in 2008 and got squeezed out by a solid Jaso, $1mil sounds like the right ticket for this team with only Gimenez and Ellis around.
He might even get the majority of starts against RHP.
Hope his defense is up to snuff and his bat comes back. He had a lot of good peripherals once upon a time. Defense. OBP.

They could, sure. But I can’t pyschoanalyze the guy over the Internet and I’m not gonna try. The fact is that Navarro has OPSed over .700 once in a season where he’s had 200 at bats. 2008 is the outlier here.

when I was 16, I got my grandma’s car (RIP) because she couldn’t drive anymore. My sister didn’t get her license until she was 18…at the same time my brother got his at 16. I had just graduated from college and moved back home…and was greeted with the news that I was going to have to buy my own car.
I didn’t have enough money to actually get a real car, I had to settle for the mystery of the Accord.

My first car was my mom’s beige (she insisted it was “taupe”) 1987 Mercury Sable. With the digital dash. That didn’t work anymore.

The page only partially loaded for me but it appears to be an article about TCU and how none of their games meant anything this year in terms of winning a national title. They ended up playing 12 games (winning all of them) all for naught. They did get invited to play in an exhibition game, attend a parade with some spectacular floats and eat some of the best steak in town. So there’s that. :)
which is how it’s been since the beginning of time dude

If they only thing that matters to you is the National Title game, then I can see where you would come to that conclusion.
Seeing as how TCU sold out their alottment of Rose Bowl tickets, it doesn’t seem as though their fans feel that way.
Really though, the article speaks on points that you and I have discussed. How bowls would be eliminated in a playoff.

Ask a TCU fan this
A trip to the Rose Bowl in a meaningless game in terms of title aspirations. Or a #3 seed into a four or eight team playoff. Would be curious as to which they’d prefer.
The way I’d put it, would you rather vacation in Pasadena for a week around New Years with the chance to win a meaningful trophy, or fork over the money to see your team play in a bunch of games with a failure to win the whole tourney meaning your whole season is a failure

as a Cal fan, going to the Rose Bowl for the first time in 50 some odd years would be more meaningful than being in the MNC game, but I can take solace in the Holiday Bowl victory a while back until then.

by Josie Becker on Dec 9, 2010 10:56 AM PST up reply actions
Right
Bowl games are fun. It seems as though people don’t realize that fact in their haste to eliminate the current system.
It seems as though people are so steadfast in their idea that absolutely, no matter what, there must be an indisputed national title. Even though there’s like 120 college football teams. People, most of whom don’t enjoy these games anywhere but their own television and would be considered somewhat casual fans, want to a lot of the fun because it doesn’t advance their goals of having a clear champion.
by Michael White on Dec 9, 2010 10:46 AM PST up reply actions
You can still have the "bowl" games
as part of the playoff system if that is what “the masses” want. Put the semi finals and finals in a bowl site. There will be plenty of money made on the TV broadcasts and I’m sure the two teams that make the finals plus any fan of the game can fill up the seats in the title game. Just makes too much sense. You can have both the exhibition bowl games, meaningful bowl games and a playoff all in one.
No, you can’t.
But we’ll just start spinning our wheels now.

LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!
Why is a playoff the only acceptable outcome? To Josie’s point, if it’s been done this way for 100 years, and the game is popular, why should the NCAA switch to become more like the NFL?
People still like going to bowl games.
by Michael White on Dec 9, 2010 10:39 AM PST up reply actions
It hasn't been like this for 100 years
And just because something has been done a certain way for X number of years does not mean it is the best/most popular/fair/makes the most $$ etc way to do things. The BCS is monopolized by a block of conferences. It is like having a Presidential election and not letting any candidates run who are from the 10 states with the smallest electoral votes. Do it that way for 50 or 100 years and people will probably say the same thing about not wanting to change it.
except this is sport, and the bowls are all exhibitions started by local communities to make money.
by Josie Becker on Dec 9, 2010 10:50 AM PST up reply actions
Popular for who? The several hundred thousand fans who travel to bowl games every year probably find it pretty popular.
People can trash bowls as “tradition” but I don’t see why fans and alumni or certian schools who still enjoy and travel and love this stuff should be told that it’s time for a change for the sake of being “fair” and making it better for TV audiences who never really have a dog in this fight. They are the casual fans.
Can’t hold up Boise, TCU and Rutgers as an argument since their fans still travel like crazy to these exhibition games.

LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!
But I’m not convinced most of the playoff models would be better. I would really only be happy with a 16 team field and even then I’d feel some remorse about losing the bowl games. I do like them, I get the purpose and I’d be bummed if they went away.
by Michael White on Dec 9, 2010 11:14 AM PST up reply actions
I just see
giving 4 to 8 teams a shot, better then giving 2 based on unbalanced schedules. Thats all.
LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!
To tell you the truth my beef is with the fairness of how the champion is determined and I couldn’t give a crap about how teams “travel” to exhibition games. As a compromise in my proposed system, I’d still have bowl games played at every single venue that they have bowl games played at today. Therefore, that argument is completely wiped out. The Las Vegas Bowl? You’d still have it. The Armed Forces Bowl? You’d still have it. The teams that did not make the 8 team field would populate those bowls. Their fans could travel to those bowl sites and have a fun vacation and attend the parades etc… The 8 teams that made the playoffs would populate the more popular bowl sites. Therefore there would still be a game in the Rose Bowl on Jan 1st, it would just be a playoff game. There would be some playoff bowl site issues to work out, but it is all very doable. Everyone gets their cake and nobody’s cheese is moved. And best of all the title is decided on the field not on the microchip or some coaches poll. I remember one year when USC was in the mix for the top two spots and they had to worry the last week or two what teams like Hawaii were doing in some obscure game because it affected their SOS in the computer.
Because
having the two teams who get to compete to be the champ decided by polls and computers is fucking lame. I would actually argue that playoffs make more sense for the NCAA then they do for the NFL. You can play a much more balanced schedule in the NFL then in the NCAA.
LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!

at the risk of starting a separate argument
I don’t hate Boise, I’m frustrated with the current position in much of the media that a team can be better than their conference. If that’s the case either go the Notre Dame route and become independent or join a better conference. We’ll see how things change once the MWC takes on the best the WAC has to offer.
by Josie Becker on Dec 9, 2010 11:17 AM PST up reply actions
I don’t want to start a separate argument either.
The only thing I’ll say is (as Stewart Mandel put it) joining a different conference is not like joining little league. You can’t just sign up for the Big 12.

There are too many Div-I (or whatever it’s called now) NCAA football teams to be able to seed a playoff tournament fairly. The team that thinks they were # 9 will scream they got screwed out of the playoffs. Who is #4 vs. #7? The BCS is pretty lame – just go back to the old bowl structure.
@davidyoungtbla - The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
But there is a huge difference between who is #2 or #3 in the current system and who is #8 and #9 in an 8 team playoff system. Has there ever been an undefeated #9 team? In an 8 team playoff, you’d just be SOL if you were the #9 team. You have to draw the line somewhere. Just like I don’t really feel bad for a team that can’t make the NCAA field of 65 (or w/e it is now).
I disagree because I don’t want rapists like Ben Roethlisberger playing in playoff games of any kind.

by Michael White on Dec 9, 2010 11:14 AM PST up reply actions
I expect that a lot of 2 to 3-loss teams, or whatever, would have an reasonable argument for #8. 8 is a pretty exclusive club. The basketball tournament is large enough that the shunned at-larges, while they have an argument, can simply be countered with, whatever, you’re clearly not top-30.
At least the basketball tournament comes immediately after the end of the season. With a three/four or more week gap to the bowl games, they ought to be exhibitions.
And if you want to be realistic, you still have to placate the conferences. The conferences are powerful – the big ones run the BCS cartel right now. The basketball tournament takes conference champs.

Pete Rose. The gift that keeps on giving.
"In 1967, I get a call from the state department and a guy identifies himself and he says, ‘Would you like to go to Vietnam?’ I said, ‘Not necessarily. In ’67?’ He said, ‘Well, Joe DiMaggio’s going.’ So five of us went over to Vietnam and we went to Saigon and met up on the Intrepid in Tonkin Bay. And we were there for 23 days. Now we’re down in the middle of the jungle, it’s hot, it’s so hot you can’t sleep, there’s a war going on, you can see the helicopter and every fourth bullet is a tracer. We’re up on a hill and there’s a valley and the other hill is where the war’s going on. And Joe says, ‘Man, I’ve gotta take a shower.’ I said, ‘Joe, we’re out in the middle of the jungle, what do you mean you’ve got to take a shower?’ He said, ‘I don’t give a damn, I’m Joe D and I’ve gotta take a shower.’ And the only way you can take a shower, Mike, is they have these big bamboo bags, like, and somebody’s got to get on a chair and pour the water and pull a rawhide thing and the water comes through and the guy takes a shower. So I saw everything that Marilyn Monroe saw. Now, when I tell people the best way to describe Joe DiMaggio, he was a penis with a man hanging from it. … Does that give you a better perspective?"

On September 27, 2003, their first wedding anniversary, Sherley [Mrs. Dioner Navarro] suffered a cerebral aneurysm in Tampa. Doctors gave her less than a 5% chance of surviving surgery, and said it was likely she would die on September 30. She survived, and made a full recovery. Navarro has worn the #30 in her honor ever since.
I wonder if Lopes will give Dioner Navarro # 30 (wonder if he picked that because it was double 15, his player number in LA) and pick a new one. 45 is available.

In my opinion, “unofficially retired” is BS. Either the number is in play or it is not. If it is not, whatever rule you have about why it’s not officially retired is a bad rule.
If no Dodger is gonna wear #34, retire it.

Is there a case to be made that there is a difference between number/player honored by being displayed in the stadium and not reassigned?
Also, Fernando is still employed there. Maybe it’s considered still his number, although he doesn’t wear a jersey.

If so, that is a distinction without a difference. The reason it is not reassigned is to honor Fernando.

The honor is private rather than public though.
I find that unsatisfying. The only reason not to reassign a number is the public honor of what that player has contributed to the team. Keeping it private makes it like an in-joke. In a couple of years, I’ll have to explain the retired numbers to Spawn, and then I’ll say, “And of course, no Dodger wears 34, but it’s not retired, even though…” C’mon, it’s silly.
