You Down With OBP?

Newest Dodger Dioner Navarro hit .275/.359/.378 with the club in 2005-2006. (Photo: Andy Lyons/Getty Images)

So far this offseason, the Dodgers have signed five offensive players:

Gwynn and Navarro are pending physicals, but will be official soon enough. Anyway, in 2010 those five hitters combined to hit .233/.299/.395 in 1,475 plate appearances.

Stats sometimes lie

Uribe Barajas and Gibbons will get most of the AB’s next year in this group. Last year these 3 had 890 AB’s and had 40 2b’s and 45 HR’s between the 3. About 1 in every 10ab’s will result in either a double or HR!

If Loney, Ethier and Kemp improve a bit and Furcal stays healthy, this added offense will helpl. It ain’t perfect and I might have done things different, but you have to look at these guys as a part of the team…However, they can’t sign Pods

He likes to chase shadows, right? Cute, even funny when he launches himself at the wall, but when I turn out the light, he starts scratching at the wall to get the light to come back.

as busy as we have been

our moves are so minute compared to these other additions, and even the moves we have made are for players who notoriously have very low AVG/SLG/OBP :(

I just can’t see us standing pat and expecting to compete, there’s no way. Even if our pitching is stellar, there is no way to put up runs like some of these other lineups that are built.

I don’t want to complain here, but either we need to come to terms with the fact that we are not going to be a very strong team, or we need to make a comparable offensive addition (and I don’t see that happening.))

I think I would be more accepting of this fact if we were a small market club, but we’re not.

Everyone says that every winter

after they make all their moves, but they dont’ have a huge number of WC over the last ten years. Yankee’s add Lee, they lose Pettite. The Red Sox add AGon/Crawford but they have lost Manny/Ortiz so they are no better they used to be and that pitching to me is still a huge ???

Both of those teams still need to beat the Ray’s pitching, who while losing Crawford add the exact same kind of player in Jennings, they add the best pitching prospect in baseball when Hellickson takes to the mound, they still could move some pitching for hitting. Hopefully Manny ends up there as a DH.

I’m not ready to had either of those teams the crown yet.

Mine was a little too bold of a statement

I realize that now. Wouldn’t you attribute a lot of the Ray’s success to their succession of top picks? Their payroll certainly isn’t the “it factor”. Then again payroll isn’t everything. I’m finally reading that money ball book and it’s kind of crazy what the A’s were able to pull off. The Ray’s are having even better results because of their draft positioning in the past.

I really, really like both Werth and Crawford, but there are definite questions. With Werth, he has only qualified for the batting title twice, and Crawford is a guy whose value comes in large part from the secondary things that are hard to quantify (defense, baserunning).

by Eric Stephen on Dec 9, 2010 8:28 AM PST up reply actions

I'm partial to Crawford Eric, so my opinion is skewed

back in 2005 I made the statement that if I was going to start a franchise my first pick would have been Crawford (or Pulhos of course). So I really value what he brings to the table, far more than most people.

This is always a great discussion topic. If you were to have a fantasy draft to build a franchise, who do you choose.

even if you didn’t have a small payroll, let’s say you had 100mil to spend, I think you still go with Longoria. but I spent an hour with my buddy (the Yankees fan) this morning doing a comparison, position by position, between the two teams and we couldn’t determine a clear cut winner.

Plus I would like to make the argument that we yet to see AGon’s true power potential because he’s played half his games at Petco. I mean Beltre is a great player but his stats improved exponentially (spelled wrong?) once he moved from Safeco to Fenway.

My take (which is far from official) is that they just added a Johnny Damon in his prime (Crawford) and a power hitting 1B who could go on a Dunn like string of 40+HR.

When looking at their rotation they are strong 1-5 and although slightly inferior to the Yanks (if they add Lee), they will still be competitive pitching wise to say the least.

"They will never ketchup to all of the energy that I've mustard"

by VeroJoe on Dec 9, 2010 8:21 AM PST reply actions

Even if the Yankees add Lee, I think the Red Sox rotation is better. Sabbathia/Lee at the top is real strong, but after that it gets shaky. Burnett hasn’t looked great, Hughes was very good for the first part of the season, and who knows who will fill out the back. Red Sox may not have the dominance at the front of their rotation, but 3-5 they’re better.

6+ deals that worked out

Pujols signed for 7/$100m (2004-2010), plus an option for 2011 that was picked up
Manny signed for 8/$160m (2001-2008) with Boston
Rolen signed for 8/$90m (2003-2010) with Cards, and played with 3 teams. He only averaged 123 games but I would still say success

Bonds’ first contract with SF was epic. I can’t remember if Maddux’s first deal with Atlanta was 6 years (I don’t think so).

It's tough

The total value the Dodgers got from Brown probably makes it worth it, but the fact that he was out of commission for roughly a year and a half of the five he was here are major red flags against the deal.

by Eric Stephen on Dec 9, 2010 9:03 AM PST up reply actions

But in the last two years of that contract

Brown pitched and started 22 and 13 games (for the Yankees) and was ok (110 ERA+) and stunk (65 ERA+) respectively, so he didn’t earn it.

The Dodgers got from Jeff Weaver what they hope to get from Jon Garland the next two years – make all your starts and be around 100 ERA+. I don’t think the Dodgers got total value from that contract, though they got a lot closer to it than many people think.

If you’re only good enough to make 11mil/year on the open market, you’re either a marginal player in a weak market, or a good but not great player in a strong market. If you’re not a great player, no one should be giving you more than 3 years. No matter the age of the player.

Kemp I pay this year and take him to arb before 2012 and see how the season goes, and if he’s had a good year and a half, extend him.

Kershaw I would give 84/7 right now.

Billingsley I would offer 50/5 today.

For a catcher that turns 27 in Feb, switch hitter complementing the RH 35 year old, a guy that delivered 3 wins in 2008 and got squeezed out by a solid Jaso, $1mil sounds like the right ticket for this team with only Gimenez and Ellis around.

He might even get the majority of starts against RHP.

Hope his defense is up to snuff and his bat comes back. He had a lot of good peripherals once upon a time. Defense. OBP.

$1mil for a 27 year old swirtch hitting catcher with potential. Let’s not forget Martin set the bar pretty low offernsively the last two years.

The problem for the Angels

is that if they are to sign Beltre and Soriano, there is no way there payroll isn’t approaching $140M and they cannot make any money if their payroll goes up that high.

by bhsportsguy on Dec 9, 2010 9:24 AM PST reply actions

I had just graduated from college and moved back home…and was greeted with the news that I was going to have to buy my own car.

I didn’t have enough money to actually get a real car, I had to settle for the mystery of the Accord.

Winter is coming.

by Maddz on Dec 9, 2010 10:01 AM PST up reply actions

My first car was my mom’s beige (she insisted it was “taupe”) 1987 Mercury Sable. With the digital dash. That didn’t work anymore.

In 1996, I drove that car across the country. In 1997, I bought a new car: a Toyota RAV4. I drove that car for 12 years, and last year, bought a Honda CRV.

Like sands in the hourglass, so go the cars in my life.

I haven't actually read comics in ages

The last one I read all the way through was the Death of Superman saga, which I enjoyed, but I didn’t care for the Cyborg Superman villain. I never got to finish reading Knightfall, either: I was much more impressed with what I read of that one and Batman coming full circle after Bane.

My mom’s sister used to work for a really rich and powerful guy back when she lived in LA, this was during the time Garvey was around. So she used to get 4 tickets right behind the Dodgers’ dugout and give two of them to my mom and dad and use the other to take a date (which I think is really fucking bold, considering my father).

2) Loney (~$4.5m) and Bills (~$5.5m) for Fielder (~$16m or so, maybe more) adds $6 million

So we are looking at an extra ~$20 million for 2011.

The page only partially loaded for me but it appears to be an article about TCU and how none of their games meant anything this year in terms of winning a national title. They ended up playing 12 games (winning all of them) all for naught. They did get invited to play in an exhibition game, attend a parade with some spectacular floats and eat some of the best steak in town. So there’s that. :)

by Xeifrank on Dec 9, 2010 10:31 AM PST up reply actions

If they only thing that matters to you is the National Title game, then I can see where you would come to that conclusion.

Seeing as how TCU sold out their alottment of Rose Bowl tickets, it doesn’t seem as though their fans feel that way.

Really though, the article speaks on points that you and I have discussed. How bowls would be eliminated in a playoff.

A trip to the Rose Bowl in a meaningless game in terms of title aspirations. Or a #3 seed into a four or eight team playoff. Would be curious as to which they’d prefer.

by Josie Becker on Dec 9, 2010 10:56 AM PST up reply actions

Right

Bowl games are fun. It seems as though people don’t realize that fact in their haste to eliminate the current system.

It seems as though people are so steadfast in their idea that absolutely, no matter what, there must be an indisputed national title. Even though there’s like 120 college football teams. People, most of whom don’t enjoy these games anywhere but their own television and would be considered somewhat casual fans, want to a lot of the fun because it doesn’t advance their goals of having a clear champion.

by Michael White on Dec 9, 2010 10:46 AM PST up reply actions

You can still have the "bowl" games

as part of the playoff system if that is what “the masses” want. Put the semi finals and finals in a bowl site. There will be plenty of money made on the TV broadcasts and I’m sure the two teams that make the finals plus any fan of the game can fill up the seats in the title game. Just makes too much sense. You can have both the exhibition bowl games, meaningful bowl games and a playoff all in one.

Why is a playoff the only acceptable outcome? To Josie’s point, if it’s been done this way for 100 years, and the game is popular, why should the NCAA switch to become more like the NFL?

by Michael White on Dec 9, 2010 10:39 AM PST up reply actions

It hasn't been like this for 100 years

And just because something has been done a certain way for X number of years does not mean it is the best/most popular/fair/makes the most $$ etc way to do things. The BCS is monopolized by a block of conferences. It is like having a Presidential election and not letting any candidates run who are from the 10 states with the smallest electoral votes. Do it that way for 50 or 100 years and people will probably say the same thing about not wanting to change it.

by Xeifrank on Dec 9, 2010 10:44 AM PST up reply actions

by Josie Becker on Dec 9, 2010 10:50 AM PST up reply actions

Popular for who? The several hundred thousand fans who travel to bowl games every year probably find it pretty popular.

People can trash bowls as “tradition” but I don’t see why fans and alumni or certian schools who still enjoy and travel and love this stuff should be told that it’s time for a change for the sake of being “fair” and making it better for TV audiences who never really have a dog in this fight. They are the casual fans.

Can’t hold up Boise, TCU and Rutgers as an argument since their fans still travel like crazy to these exhibition games.

LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!

by nolander on Dec 9, 2010 11:15 AM PST up reply actions

To tell you the truth my beef is with the fairness of how the champion is determined and I couldn’t give a crap about how teams “travel” to exhibition games. As a compromise in my proposed system, I’d still have bowl games played at every single venue that they have bowl games played at today. Therefore, that argument is completely wiped out. The Las Vegas Bowl? You’d still have it. The Armed Forces Bowl? You’d still have it. The teams that did not make the 8 team field would populate those bowls. Their fans could travel to those bowl sites and have a fun vacation and attend the parades etc… The 8 teams that made the playoffs would populate the more popular bowl sites. Therefore there would still be a game in the Rose Bowl on Jan 1st, it would just be a playoff game. There would be some playoff bowl site issues to work out, but it is all very doable. Everyone gets their cake and nobody’s cheese is moved. And best of all the title is decided on the field not on the microchip or some coaches poll. I remember one year when USC was in the mix for the top two spots and they had to worry the last week or two what teams like Hawaii were doing in some obscure game because it affected their SOS in the computer.

by Xeifrank on Dec 9, 2010 11:06 AM PST up reply actions

Because

having the two teams who get to compete to be the champ decided by polls and computers is fucking lame. I would actually argue that playoffs make more sense for the NCAA then they do for the NFL. You can play a much more balanced schedule in the NFL then in the NCAA.

I expect that a lot of 2 to 3-loss teams, or whatever, would have an reasonable argument for #8. 8 is a pretty exclusive club. The basketball tournament is large enough that the shunned at-larges, while they have an argument, can simply be countered with, whatever, you’re clearly not top-30.

At least the basketball tournament comes immediately after the end of the season. With a three/four or more week gap to the bowl games, they ought to be exhibitions.

And if you want to be realistic, you still have to placate the conferences. The conferences are powerful – the big ones run the BCS cartel right now. The basketball tournament takes conference champs.

So he’s in a walk year. Good to know. Gurnick made it sound like this is a long term deal or something.

by silverwidow on Dec 9, 2010 10:52 AM PST up reply actions

By long term deal, I meant under team control.

by silverwidow on Dec 9, 2010 10:52 AM PST up reply actions

He does have one option remaining though.

Speaking of OBP (redux)

Rob Neyer gets all sarcastic with this header:

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

by underdog on Dec 9, 2010 10:47 AM PST reply actions

The Dodgers have added one player with a higher career OBP than Jeff Francouer this off season.

by regfairfield on Dec 9, 2010 10:56 AM PST up reply actions

And that player was on the Newark Bears in 2009.

by regfairfield on Dec 9, 2010 10:57 AM PST up reply actions

Dodgers like players who can change the game with one swing. OBP doesn’t give enough weight to that.

by silverwidow on Dec 9, 2010 10:59 AM PST up reply actions

So, like Spinal Tap's amp, we're 1 better than the Royals?

They just got Melky, so sadly no.

Listening to ESPN Radio

and Dan “The Duke” Davis on his sports update noted that the Red Sox signed “speedball outfielder Carl Crawford.”

That makes two total speedball references in baseball, joining Bruce Springsteen in Glory Days.

Speed is a hell of a drug?

this may have already been posted:

Colletti said that there’s a chance he’ll sign nobody, let such internal candidates as Gwynn and Xavier Paul get a shot, then make a move if needed as the season unfolds.

posednick playing a lot or split duties between Hall & Gibbons?
