Gurnick's blog entry
has an interesting title.
“[Belliard] knocked in some big runs for us, enough so that you basically played him instead of your regular second baseman,” said manager Joe Torre. “When we made the trade for him, we made no promises he was going to play and, all of a sudden, he caught fire and we really had no choice.Read the tea leaves as best you can.
”He was fine with the backup role last season. We know he can play for a short period of time. We have to figure out how many days a week it makes sense."

I think Torre wants DeWitt to win the job. He’d be another lefty bat, a young player within a suddenly maturing core, and a way to stash a power bat on the bench. I also think it’s clear Belliard would get a good number of starts against lefties. I’m happy with the tone of these comments.
Yah you would think Dewitt would be ready, but we will find out soon.
LA Sports is what keep me off the streets and out of trouble, thanks to all the teams Rams, Dodgers, Lakers, USC sports and the Love of Tennis.

O wow

TOP 2029 Prospects!!!!
WTF????!?!?!? 2029 prospects?? bryant hernandez is like 1987 ….
I'm new to following Dodger minor leaguers in detail, but
who the heck is Cole St. Clair?!
Note that he has Ely listed higher than Elbert. Hmmm….
32 Danny Danielson , P , LAD
heh heh- a funny last name, for anyone who remembers the 80’s, and the fact that his FIRST name is essentially the same as his last is a bonus!
Very impressive chat by Tony Jackson
it is just me or does he seem to know more about what is going on then he used to? He’s seems to have taken to his ESPN gig like a duck to water.
So
DeWiit 50/50 chance to be 2nd baseman
Carroll expected to backup SS if DeWitt wins 2nd base job
McDonald has inside track on 5th starter job
Elbert seems destined for ALB
Loney put on muscle
TBLA members writers and members dominated the chat. Maybe Eric can swing it so that Tony does a life chat with us this spring?
interesting about DeWitt
I’ve been a little surprised at how many people think DeWitt is going back to Triple A at the start of the year. If he does struggles during the spring, I can definitely see that happening. But otherwise, even with the other two guys at second, it seems he can get more than his fair share of playing time with Beardless needing a fair amount of time off this year.
There is this quote from the Tony Jackson chat:
Joe says if DeWitt is the regular 2B, he’ll play ONLY 2B because Joe doesn’t want him moving around. If somebody gets hurt, they can always bring one of those guys up from the minors when the need arisesOf course, Joe says a lot of things that don’t happen, but you might see Jamey Carroll at 3B every time The Erstwhile Beard needs a blow.

ah, my theory shot down by the man himself
guess that takes care of that one! :) I’ll have to check out the chat myself. Thanks!
Giles
He went on the disabled list on June 19 and never came off, diagnosed with what was called a bone contusion, which can be a nice way of saying it’s bone rubbing on bone. In that case, all the rehab in the world is meaningless, as the pain will return as soon as he starts running.
Have to say the article did not leave me with the impression that Giles will be able to play.
I had that same reaction. Did you catch the bit about Eye Chart?
Giles’ most obvious rival for the bench role is Doug Mientkiewicz, who has physical problems of his own, with chronic pain in his throwing shoulder and, for the second year, must make the club on a Minor League contract. We got a couple gimps competing for that LH PH job.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
That was my big takeaway from all of today’s news, as you’ll see on DT. An early birthday present for Xavier Paul?
Answer: both!
Mientkiewicz bats left and throws right. I wonder the painful effects are less while hitting compared to throwing because the sore shoulder is the lead shoulder. Maybe this just means that he would defensively be solely a 1B, instead of a corner IF/OF.

Or Matt Stairs
then he can tell Broxton he never saw any of those four balls but appreciated the fact they were all outside of the strike zone.
Wouldn’t that be something? How hilarious would it be to sign Lopez to a one-year deal (although he probably ends up in StL to start) AND Belliard after signing Carroll for two years :)

Any way they can DFA Repko and not have to pay him his $500K ?
by Michael White on Feb 25, 2010 3:26 PM PST up reply actions
You keep citing Repko, but a Lopez signing wouldn’t really change the OF organizational depth chart. I don’t think he’s as high on the cut list as you think he is.
by Eric Stephen on Feb 25, 2010 3:40 PM PST up reply actions
It’s all about trying to find a spot. Stults sounds like he’ll be given a shot, so he’s not a cut candidate.
Haeger could have some bullpen value. And the unknown Rule 5 guys should at least be given some time to show what they have.
Repko provides little if any value right now, especially if XPaul is healthy.
I agree with Eric. A Lopez signing wouldn’t affect Repko’s situation – just the backup infield candidates.
Reed Johnson was the Repko-killer.
I still remained puzzled about the Carroll signing
When Lopez is going to end up signing for something like 1 yr/ $1 MM.
Carroll must be an “Ultimate Ned Guy”
Carroll is content to be the bench guy. I suspect Lopez wants to be full-time. He’s only 30 (almost) and has played full-time essentially for the last five seasons.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
I'm sure he does
but he does seem to have limited options at this point. He’s the last guy standing and all the chairs are filled.
A rugby player tested positive for HGH. George Sherrill is quoted in the article, which focuses on how this might affect MLB and the NFL.
Dodgers pitcher George Sherrill said there should be testing for the substance.
“It just guarantees that the playing field’s even and no one’s cheating,” Sherrill said. “I don’t know if anybody is or not, but this is a way to guarantee it and make sure the game’s clean. They’ve gotten everything else out of the game — why not take the last couple of steps?”

Pitching is worrying the heck out of me
Too many variables going into this season starting with the rotation. Should still have a strong bullpen, but would have loved at least one more starting pitcher thrown into the mix. Oh, well baseball’s back…woohoo!
No more raining on Bruins Nation's rainy parade, they took their ball and went home.
I wonder what Laker questions
Ireland will ask Kim?

yeah, really
I’ve been listening to ESPN 1050 for over an hour now. The contrast is amazing- it’s all Yankees, complete with speculation over the most trivial A-Rod/Jeter related items. One quick mention in passing about the Knicks. You get the feeling that ESPN-LA would forget that the Dodgers even PLAY in this city, if not for the guests that they get from the front office.
I understand this isn’t a great comparison for a few reasons, but come on- it’s almost MARCH already! A little bit more non-mandatory baseball talk would be nice. I like the Lakers, but over the past month alone, I’ve had my fill of discussions over whether Kobe is the greatest Laker, greatest clutch-player, greater than LeBron, greater than sliced bread, whatever, to last me through NEXT year’s finals!
jinxed
literally as soon as post this, the NY host starts talking about how Ron Artest can’t shoot anymore! :))
Kim – defending our rotation
Kim – competition for 5th starter, Stults, McDonald, Elbert, Ramon Ortiz
competition for 2nd base, Belliard, Carroll, DeWitt
Kim – most worried about SF within the division
Kim – Ned has great track record for improving team during the year
I guess she feels the Giants have a better pitching staff.

I was on hold at lunch for fill ins Long and Kamentzky (& A. Martinez) because they were discussing the need for an ace. It was actually a reasonable conversation for the most part, but I had to take another call so I hung up. I might do a post about it later tonight.

Here's something that made my day
From the Minor League Prospect rankings. Prospects traded for Cliff Lee:
158. Phillippe Aumont, P, PHI
205. Tyson Gillies, OF, PHI
Prospects traded for Roy Halladay:
12. Kyle Drabek, P, TOR
28. Micheal Taylor, OF, OAK
213. Travis D’Arnaud, C
Unreal! Though we’ll inevitably be hearing the simplistic and inaccurate “Halladay/Lee swap” tagline over and over again throughout the season, there is so much more to it. The Phillies basically gave up their ace/postseason folk hero for a couple of so-so prospects, when they could have traded Joe Blanton instead. They would’ve had a 1-2-3 of Halladay/Lee/Hamels for roughly the same payroll, and received two draft picks for Lee at the end of the season, which probably would have been about as valuable as Aumont and Gillies (especially when you consider the value of having Lee for a year versus not having him). To add insult to injury, the gap between Halladay and Lee doesn’t seem NEARLY as high as the gap between the prospects the Phillies gave up, and the ones they received.
I have spent as much time looking over and thinking about this as anything I have with anything the Dodgers have (or rather, haven’t) done this offseason. It seems far more well-intentioned than not offering Wolf and Hudson arbitration to save a few bucks (no matter what official explanation we get), but I’d bet that the negative repercussions are going to be felt far more for what the Phillies have done than what the Dodgers have (not) done, for years to come!
Both the Dodgers and Phillies will be trying to do something they have never done
In tne Dodgers case, make the playoffs 3 years in a row and for the Phillies 4 years in a row. The last NL team to make the playoffs more than 3 years in a row was, of course, the Atlanta Braves went to 13 straight post-season appearences, ending in 2005.
Carroll at 3rd base.
This feels like some other time recently we were playing someone with no pop at third, which is really lame. I want to say it was Iztures or Castro, but I think it was someone else I can’t remember. Although I find fielding more important than most of the guys I talk with, I still think a roster spot for a pinch hitter should go to a 1st-3rd type guy with power instead of all middle infield types. Hell, he doesn’t have to be left-handed or smart!! Please—not Carroll at third.
That could be it
?? What is the pits? But it might have been someone a few years back also.
If it isn’t Izturis’ 28 starts at 3B you’re thinking about, maybe it’s Oscar Robles 31 starts and Mike Edwards 33 starts in 2005 you’re thinking of.
