Kuroda to Make Second Spring Start; First Roster Cuts Announced
Rangers (ss) (4-4-1) at Dodgers (ss) (2-5-1)
1:05pm, Camelback Ranch, Glendale, AZ
Hiroki Kuroda will make his second start of the spring today, and if the likely rest of the rotation is any indication, Kuroda will have a good outing:
| Dodger Pitchers Making Second Start This Spring | ||||||||
| Pitcher | Date | Opp | IP | H | R | ER | BB | K |
| Vicente Padilla | Mar 10 | Arizona | 3.0 | 4 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 4 |
| Eric Stults | Mar 12 | CPBL | 3.0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 4 |
| Clayton Kershaw |
Mar 12 | Cincinnati | 3.0 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 3 |
| Chad Billingsley | Mar 13 | Arizona | 3.0 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 4 |
After last night's game in Taiwan, the Dodgers reassigned pitcher Francisco Felix, catcher Gabe Gutierrez, and outfielder Brian Barton to minor league camp. Joining them was catcher-turned-pitcher Kenley Jansen, who was optioned. The number of players in major league camp now stands at 61.
You can check out Jon SooHoo's photo galleries from yesterday's action in Taiwan here and here.
Here are the lineups, which include Garret Anderson, making his Dodger debut, at designated hitter::
| Rangers | Dodgers | |||
| CF | Borbon | SS | Furcal | |
| SS | Andrus | 2B | DeWitt | |
| LF | Murphy | RF | Ethier | |
| RF | Cruz | CF | Kemp | |
| 1B | Davis | DH | Anderson | |
| C | Saltalamacchia | 3B | Blake | |
| DH | Ramirez | LF | Johnson | |
| 2B | Arias | 1B | Mientkiewicz |
|
| 3B | German | C | Ausmus | |
| P | Holland | P | Kuroda | |
Dodger pitchers scheduled to follow Kuroda are Jeff Weaver, Jonathan Broxton, George Sherrill, and Ramon Troncoso.
The scheduled pitchers for the Rangers today are Derek Holland, Geoff Geary, Clay Rapada, Pedro Strop, Michael Kirkman, and Willie Eyre. Texas has a split squad, with the rest of their team back home in Surprise to face the Diamondbacks.
Tomorrow, the Dodgers travel to Tempe, for Diablo Stadium and a Dr. Pepper! Probable pitchers for Monday are Padilla, Ramon Ortiz, and Luis Ayala. I am guessing the plan is for pitchers on the starter's program -- including Padilla and Ortiz -- to pitch four innings in their third appearance (up from two and three, respectively, in the first two outings).
The Dodgers have quite a few players from minor league camp in uniform for today's game:
| No | Pos | Player |
| 83 | P | Tim Corcoran |
| 89 | P | Chris Withrow |
| 95 | P | Ethan Martin |
| 90 | C | Ryan Arp |
| 90 | C | Gorman Erickson |
| 69 | SS | Christian Lara |
| 94 | 2B/3B | Cesar Suarez |
| 96 | 1B | Steve Caseres |
| 97 | 3B | Pedro Baez |
| 84 | OF | Timo Perez |
| 91 | OF | Andrew Lambo |
| 92 | OF | Brian Cavazos-Galvez |
| 93 | OF | Preston Mattingly |
TV: Prime Ticket (the next four games are on TV; tomorrow, we get the Angels' broadcast on Fox Sports West, Tuesday is an off day, then both Wednesday and Thursday back on Prime Ticket)
Radio: KABC 790 and the Dodger Radio Network.

Believe it or not, I actually emailed a generic address at Dodgers.com about Kyle Russell being on the 40-man roster. They still haven’t taken it off, so I just don’t get it.
It’s just an error that has to do with the MLB.com software. Look at the transactions page, and for all the guys from minor league camp that get to suit up, they are listed as “assigned to Los Angeles Dodgers.”
It was most likely just someone putting Russell in the wrong spot.

From the game notes
In preparation for today’s game against the Rangers, many Dodgers including Andre Ethier, Jonathan Broxton, Reed Johnson, and bull-owner Tommy Lasorda, whose bucking bull is appropriately named “Deja Blue” took in a Texas-like event last night, the Professional Bull Riding rodeo in Glendale.
Nice.
I think he compares his output with the bull’s.

If you want to complain to someone by phone at Quizno’s headquarters, you have to have a receipt handy. Otherwise, they just refer you to the website.
Starting to wonder if Charley Steiner is incapable of using decimal points when describing ERA. Every single time, he uses a fraction…e.g. Kuroda’s ERA was “three and three quarters.”
I don’t think they’re mutually exclusive

The Question Has Always Been, Is DeWitt's 2B Defense PASSABLE?
Does anybody here say it isn’t? We put up with Jeff Kent defense at 2B after all.
I watch a lot
of Rangers games being in their market. Holland has a chance to be a good pitcher. He was pretty good in spots last year and has a load of potential
23 strikes, 9 balls so far.
Started out 5 of 6 batters in 1st with a strike.
In second, each batter went ball-strike-out

Kuroda is a master at hitting corners. He has plus command. But he needs to keep the ball down otherwise he has a tendency to get pummeled.

Steiner just said the crown jewel of the Teixeira trade (for Texas) was Andrus.

The plan was already for Kuroda to go 3 though.
There is probably an inning or maybe two that still could be used by Withrow and/or Martin
by Eric Stephen on Mar 14, 2010 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions
I was
sure he was only going 3, but I was wondering if there was a certain number of pitches thrown that would get him pulled
They said before the game the plan was to go 3 innings or about 50 pitches…he’s at 3/48

The funny part about that is that it would also require the Cardinals to discuss it too.

straight up it’s a great deal for the Phillies, obviously. That doesn’t make Amaro retarded though.
Thinking the Cards would consider it might, though.

From the Cards’ office standpoint, straight up, yes.
by Julio Nievas on Mar 14, 2010 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions
Trading Pujols would mean more than trading the best player in baseball, it would be trading the face of the Cardinals franchise. Pujols is one of 5 of the most recognizable Cardinals in their long history. You’ve got Stan Musial, Bob Gibson, Ozzie Smith, Mark McGwire, and now Pujols. The fan base would revolt if he were traded, no matter what it was for.
he is just learning 2B

My favorite part of the Howard for Pujols rumors is that none of the articles mention that the Phillies would have to also include other players and/or prospects, despite the fact that:
1) Pujols is far better than Howard
2) Pujols is younger than Howard
3) Pujols makes less money than Howard
Both under contract through 2011; Howard at $39m total, Pujols at $32m (if his 2011 option is exercised)
Just an insane idea on all levels for St. Louis
several reasons why it wouldn't make sense.
- They’re under control for the same amount of years. (Both become FAs after 2011, with Albert Pujols having an team option after 2010)
- Ryan Howard will make more money than Pujols over the next two years.
- the Cards would want more than Howard to make it work for them. After trading for both Lee, and Halladay, they have no prospects outside of Brown that is near ready for the Phillies.
- They wouldn’t keep Lee for a run this year. Why would they shift course months after making that decision and spend even more of their resources on Albert Pujols, who is admittedly the best player in the majors or near it, but the marginal value wouldn’t be worth it for the Phillies as much for a team that is nearer to the 1B replacement level.
- TRL wouldn’t allow it. AT ALL.
Right
and if St. Louis can’t afford Pujols, then they shouldn’t have shot their wad on Holliday.
by Eric Stephen on Mar 14, 2010 2:16 PM PDT up reply actions
If St. Louis can't afford Pujols
Their entire front office should be purged, given how much they are paying Matt Holliday.
I just read the article, and it made me laugh. Though it says Amaro wasn’t actually going to go to ST Louis with the offer, how could anyone in that organization even think that would be considered?
For a deal like that to made, I’d imagine it would have to be something like:
Pujols
for
Howard
2 of the Phillies top 3 prospects
plus a few lower prospects
Honestly, the value of Howard is nowhere near the value of Pujols, ESPECIALLY because he makes more money for the next 2 years, and should continue making over 20 million a year after that as well.
Sepaking of that
Here comes Troncoso…though I bet he tries to get 4 outs

Giant fans should be concerned
From Baseball HQ:
With Bumgarner stuck in slow lane, Wellemeyer may pass. While the Giants may prefer to see top prospect Madison Bumgarner start the year in their rotation, Bumgarner’s failure to regain the life on his fastball this spring has the team concerned. Bumgarner topped out at 90 mph and threw a couple of 85-mph fastballs in his final inning while walking four in a 6-2 loss to the Mariners last week.

On Jamey Carroll's 2B defense
fangraphs.com has his career UZR/150 at 8.3 for 2B. From 2007-2009, 5.5, 0.2, 7.4, respectively. Over three years that’s just over 170 starts, so smallish sample size alert.
