Elbert, Gagne Among Roster Cuts; Zerpa Heads Back to Boston

Dodgers (3-5-1) at Angels (2-7-2)

1:05pm, Tempe Diablo Stadium, Tempe, AZ

Today, the Dodgers had a series of roster cuts.  Scott Elbert was optioned to minor league camp, after all of 3.1 spring innings, two innings of which were in a "B" game last Monday.

Eric Gagne, who hasn't impressed at all in his three outings, was also assigned to minor league camp as were pitcher Scott Dohmann, first baseman John Lindsey, and outfielder Michael Restovich.

Rule 5 draft pick Armando Zerpa was returned to the Red Sox, bringing the total number of players in big league camp to 55.  With Zerpa now gone, the 40-man roster now has 39 players.  Another, at least temporary spot on the 40-man roster might open up if Ronald Belisario starts the season on the restricted list, suspended without pay.  "I thought that the chances of Belisario being here when I got back were pretty good," manager Joe Torre said today, "I think he would be a long shot for the Opening Day roster."

Vicente Padilla was scheduled to start today, but instead he and James McDonald will pitch in a practice game today at 11am.

Here are the lineups:

Dodgers      Angels
SS Furcal SS Izturis
2B DeWitt 2B Kendrick
RF Ethier CF Hunter
CF Kemp DH Matsui
LF Anderson 1B Morales
3B Blake RF Rivera
DH Johnson 3B Wood
1B Mientkiewicz   C Mathis
C Ellis LF Aldridge
P Ramon Ortiz P Kazmir

Charlie Haeger, Luis Ayala, Travis Schlichting, and Brent Leach are also scheduled to pitch for the Dodgers today, and Ethan Martin might follow in Chris Withrow's path and get an inning of work in as well.

After Scott Kazmir, the Angels' scheduled pitchers are Sean O'Sullivan, Fernando Rodney, and Kevin Jepsen.

If I were Elbert, I’d be a little pissed off. Guy does everything asked of him last year, stays healthy, gets jerked around a bit on starting/relieving, then is sent down early in the spring.

by kinbote on Mar 15, 2010 11:07 AM PDT reply actions

Maybe that’s part of the plan. Piss him off, motivate him to perform better.

by Eric Stephen on Mar 15, 2010 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Elbert did start camp with shoulder soreness, remember...

It could still be a factor. Barring that as an explanation for his poor performances (albeit we’re talking about TWO performances), Elbert definitely disappointed. Although, since he was written off as a serious rotation candidate (by Torre) before spring training even began, maybe this makes starting the year in the minors more palatable to him. I think he would only have cause to be “pissed off” if he did well and still got demoted.

by CanuckDodger on Mar 15, 2010 11:14 AM PDT reply actions

That makes sense

Put him on a starter’s program, which there won’t be adequate innings for without sending him down.

Rotoworld says Boston “accepted” Zerpa from the Dodgers. To me, that sounds like he cleared waivers and is back in the Red Sox minor league system.

That's right

Russ O and Carlos Monasterios to pitch Wednesday against Sox & Peavy

by Eric Stephen on Mar 15, 2010 11:53 AM PDT via mobile reply actions

• Dodgers right-hander Chris Withrow, the No. 2 prospect in their system and top pitching prospect, was extremely impressive in one inning of work. He was 92-95 mph on his four-seamer and threw a few two-seamers at 88-89, locating both pitches better than I had expected. His curveball is slow at 74-76 mph but he gets tight rotation on it and good depth, and aside from one that he just snapped off incompletely that hit a batter, most were sharp and either in the zone or below it. I didn’t get a side view of his delivery but aside from slightly late elbow pronation it looked clean from behind the plate.

• Jonathan Broxton worked an inning at 92-94, giving up more contact than I’d expect on his fastball, although he didn’t seem to be airing it out. Hiroki Kuroda started and mixed four- and two-seamers, splitters and a few sliders, with the slider the worst pitch, but both tumble and fade on the splitter (like a split-change) and some late tail on some of the two-seamers.

Did you know that UCLA's Friday Starter

Gerrit Cole, who was drafted by the Yankees in the first round (2008), never took an offer from them. According to published reports, Cole and his family believed that he needed to the time in college to mature plus in the end, if it worked out the way they thought, he would not be losing any money. But he also gave up any chance to pitch for his boyhood favorite team for now.

At this time, Cole is projected as a top 5 pick, currently he is 4-0 this year as a sophomore with a ridiculous 14.6/1 strikeout to walk ratio.

by bhsportsguy on Mar 15, 2010 12:35 PM PDT reply actions

He made the right decision. If someone as talented as Phil Hughes can’t crack the Yankees’ rotation, it’s definitely a tough climb.

Just curious

Any reason why Padilla and McDonald aren’t pitching in the real game today, but instead are in a practice game? Probably doesn’t matter that much ultimately, maybe this is safer for them?

by underdog on Mar 15, 2010 12:40 PM PDT reply actions

Haven’t heard any news, so I don’t think it’s an injury. Coupled with tomorrow’s day off, and the team returning from Taiwan, adding a practice game was probably a way to get all these guys some work and keep everyone on schedule.

I think Padilla for sure, and to a lesser extent McDonald have spots on the team already, so the need for them to face competition isn’t as prevalent as it is for Ortiz, Haeger, and the rest of the guys making the bus ride to Tempe.

by Eric Stephen on Mar 15, 2010 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks

I guess I’m not as sure as you about McDonald’s spot on the 25 man but given that he proved himself in the pen last year at least, and there are no givens with Weaver, and who knows about Bellisario at this point, you might be right. But would be good to see him keep doing better and better in spring outings.

I’m a little surprised by the TBLA “company line” that J-Mac is pretty close to having a spot wrapped up. I won’t be surprised at all if he begins the year in the minors, especially if a rule 5er or out-of-options-er is pitching well (Monasterios).

by kinbote on Mar 15, 2010 12:55 PM PDT up reply actions

With the Belisario situation, the opening day bullpen has room for McDonald, Weaver, and Monasterios. If they have to choose between J-Mac and Haeger for one spot in the pen, I’m betting on J-Mac

The only way I see McDonald not on the roster

is if they want him in the rotation for when they get tired of Stults which will happen at some point.

Don't Like

how this Li’l Belly situation is unfolding, with perhaps Torre souring on him over an issue that is probably out of Li’l Belly’s control.

by Bob Hendley on Mar 15, 2010 12:40 PM PDT reply actions

Not sure how a DUI

was out of his control, or getting the paper work to the embassy sooner is out of his control. That said once he arrives in camp all the rhetoric will cease and it will be about his stuff just like it was last year.

by meercatjohn on Mar 15, 2010 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed, all should be forgotten… Out of his control has to with after his DUI and after submitting the papers, no? Torre seems to have had some expectations about how long the process would take that are not being met.

by Bob Hendley on Mar 15, 2010 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, there are conflicting reports about Belisario’s level of commitment to the visa process. We don’t really know what the truth is at this point

by Eric Stephen on Mar 15, 2010 12:55 PM PDT up reply actions

He didn’t want to get it in time to make ST? OK, I go with a lack of understanding on his and his lawyer’s part on how seriously the DUI issue would be taken.

by Bob Hendley on Mar 15, 2010 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

There is that, but also the reports that Belisario missed 3 appointments with the U.S. Embassy

by Eric Stephen on Mar 15, 2010 1:13 PM PDT up reply actions

A report that he subsequently denied.

He also said something to the effect that he did everything he was supposed to.

Assume he filed his papers as soon as he could (I assume there are limits), we shouldn’t be surprised that someone with a U.S. arrest record that is trying to obtain a work visa and enter from Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela is experiencing delays from the US State department.

To be fair, Colletti is the only one who has sounded annoyed at Belisario. I read Torre’s quote(s) as just accepting the situation as is…that Belisario isn’t here yet, he won’t be here in the next couple of days, and likely won’t have enough time to be ready for the season opener.

From a fantasy point

DeJesus will not have much value either. He doesn’t run and unless you play in an OB league he is not going to help. In the spring of 2008 I expected DeJesus to be our starting 2nd baseman by 2010, but with the lost year I can only see him having a role this year is at SS if Furcal goes down.

Baseball's Best Units

Jon Heyman, Sport Illustrated: “Baseball’s Best of the Best”

Best Outfield: Dodgers
Even though Manny Ramirez showed signs of slowing down last year, and apparently still can’t decide whether he’s playing no more years with the Dodgers, or five, I’ll take the Dodgers trio. Matt Kemp is an under-appreciated star who can do it all, and Andre Ethier had more walk-off hits than anyone in baseball. The Dodgers were wise to lock up Kemp and Ethier for two years each, avoiding a potentially acrimonious arbitration battle in consecutive years with a pair of youngsters who might not be able to handle it.
Best Bullpen: Dodgers
The Dodgers’ bullpen is probably the best-balanced, and will get even better if Hong-Chih Kuo is healthy. George Sherrill, Ronald Belisario and Ramon Troncoso are talented front men for imposing closer Jonathan Broxton, who still has to show he can close out games in October. Their 2.54 overall ERA was nearly half a run better than anyone else. . . .

I’ve tested it out and it has a fast processer. Good speaker, reception. It’s reallly bulky and its a slider phone. you can’t do much to it in the form of customizing. The iphone is the best in my opinion, but AT&T really sucks. Dropped calls all the time.

On Haeger:

He was fine. He got well quickly. He threw consistently with the knuckleball. He will have the opportunity to be a reliever because he can pitch everyday. The fact that he’s out of options means you have to look at him for the fifth starter.

He was pretty good especially against his old team. He kept the ball down and mixed his pitches. Russ Ortiz is also making a statement for himself.
