Giants (20-10) at Dodgers (ss) (11-12-2)

1:05pm, Camelback Ranch, Glendale, AZ

The Dodgers have reached the final day of their second Cactus League season, as they play a pair of games before moving on to their final three exhibition games in Los Angeles and Anaheim.  Today's first game is the finale at Camelback Ranch against the Giants.

Don Mattingly will manage the day game today, and Joe Torre will manage the club in Las Vegas tonight as they play the Reds.

Russell Martin returns to the lineup today, completing the bookends to the club's Arizona portion of spring training.  Martin's only other game this spring was the Dodgers' first game of the spring, on March 5 against the White Sox.  He missed three weeks with a right groin injury, an injury that originally was though to sideline the catcher for opening day.  However, Martin has played in four minor league games over the last week without problems, and looks now to be a lock to start Monday in Pittsburgh.

Opening day starter Vicente Padilla will start for the Dodgers, and be followed by Russ Ortiz, who is battling for a spot on the 11-man pitching staff.  Jon Ely, one of two pitchers acquired for Juan Pierre in December, and Scott Dohmann are also scheduled to pitch today for the Dodgers.

The Dodgers have officially released Jason Repko and Eric Stults, removing them from the 40-man roster.  In the case of Stults, clearing release waivers was a procedural necessity before officially completing his sale to the Hiroshima Carp.  In the case of Repko, his near 11-year run with the organization ended on a sour note, as the Dodgers announced his release before telling Repko (per Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times).  The Dodgers now have 36 players on their 40-man roster.

Manager Joe Torre said Josh Lindblom, who is not on the 40-man roster, will start the season in the minors, according to Hernandez.

Here are the lineups:

Giants      Dodgers
CF Velez SS Furcal
LF DeRosa        C Martin
3B Sandoval LF Manny
1B Huff      1B Loney
2B Uribe 3B Belliard
RF Bowker RF Anderson
C Posey CF Johnson
SS Crawford 2B Carroll
P Ramirez P Padilla

Let me get this straight

Are we operating under the same general assumption wrt our roster?

Locks: starting 8 (with DeWitt); bench 6 (with Green); rotation 5; and bullpen 6 (Broxton, Sherrill, Troncoso, Weaver, Ra. Ortiz, & [Monasterios vs. Ru. Ortiz vs. field])

It’s that one last spot that appears to be undecided, eh?

by kinbote on Mar 31, 2010 12:43 PM PDT reply actions

That sounds right

They might also be wrestling with Russ Ortiz or Monasterios vs. Green (or, shudder, DeWitt), in case they want to take 12 pitchers.

by Eric Stephen on Mar 31, 2010 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions

You would think the weakened bullpen [no Kuo, Beli, iffy Sherrill] would push them toward keeping that 12th pitcher.

by kinbote on Mar 31, 2010 12:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Since we’re weighing the risk/reward of possibly keeping Monk, what is his upside? I’ve asked this before but got no replies. Realistically, what could we expect him to become in 2-3 years if we make all this effort to keep him?

by kinbote on Mar 31, 2010 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Hard to tell

he wasn’t thought of enough by the Phillies to protect. He’s never pitched above A+ ball by the age of 23.

Fangraphs.com finally put the Mariners on their 30-1 franchise list

at #6. All but maybe 10% of the comments are just people that are completely puzzled by this ranking and pointing out that the Mariners problems are being glossed over while teams like the Giants, Phillies, Tigers, etc…get heavily penalized for the same types of problems.

Way to go, Fangraphs.

It's Dave Cameron's list

Not Fangraphs list. :)
If the guy from Halo Heaven was working for Fangraphs the Mariners would be around 20th. I like to think of it as one of those studies you see published in Yahoo News every month or so, naming the top 10 cities to live in. Due to weather and lack of diversity etc…, I’d probably never want to live in 7 or 8 of them. These studies like the one Dave Cameron is doing is extremely subjective. Instead of worrying about his rankings, which are very flawed – instead concentrate on the substance and consider it more of an educational read (minus the rankings). Because he does offer some good analysis mixed in there.

I can’t take the Mariners articles seriously at all because of the ranking. Almost every other one i’ve read has been very insightful and fun to read, even the Dodgers. It just bugs the absolute crap out of me their reasoning for some of these rankings…ughhh.

by Ivdown on Mar 31, 2010 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Good point, but he is writing under the fangraphs name and masthead, so he has to take that into account. Even if he isn’t speaking for fangraphs, he is representing them at all times with what he writes, the level of effort and analysis he puts in, etc. I never post any article here without thinking about how it represents TBLA. Comments on the other hand….. :)

The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.

by David Young on Mar 31, 2010 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

True, but he says that he alone did not make these rankings, that it was a group effort with the input from other staff writers. The authors at Fangraphs are all very bright “sabermetricly” leaning people. So it is natural to see them (and Cameron) favor teams that run their team like running a fortune 500 business. They did an excellent job of getting rid of all of their dead weight contracts left over from the previous ownership. They did a great job of finding value in the Cliff Lee trade. They did a great job of filling the holes of players who left via free agency (treaded water). They’ve always done a great job of finding value in defensively minded players, and they’ve made a great hire of Tom Tango as one of their lead consultants on the stats side. If this were the Billboard Top 100, the Mariners would definitely have a bullet or two next to their name based on they migrate from ownership that traded Adam Jones for a year of Erik Bedard to an ownership that flipped a few middle ceiling prospects for a stud pitcher in Cliff Lee who has a very friendly contract and later can grab two high draft picks for him. I’d give the Mariners the bullet next to their name, but not sure if I’d rank them this high YET.

Thinking out loud

of what my list would look like. This is no particular order, but this is a list of how I’d compare teams vs the Mariners using the FG criteria.

Above for sure (5)
Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, Cardinals, Phillies

Probably above (2)
Braves, Rockies

Even “Eric” Stephen (4)
Angels, Twins, Rangers, Dodgers

So I’d rank em anywhere from #6 to 12th. If we throw them in the middle of the last two groups that would make them 9th. Fangraphs hasn’t called me yet. :)

The Cardinals have one of the 2 or 3 worst farm systems in baseball, which should be weighed against them somewhat heavily. In 2 years, Pujols still start making anywhere from 23-27 million a year, handicapping their payroll. In 2 years as well, I believe Carpenter and Wainwright will be free agents. Their farm system is so bad that if they lose those two, and can’t spend all that much, their rotation will be seriously horrible after 2011. I’d imagine they’d try to keep Wainwright, though.

by Ivdown on Mar 31, 2010 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Good point

if the Cards don’t have plans to open up the purse strings if/when they sign Pujols they wouldn’t deserve to be this high. The always somehow manage to pull a rabbit out of the hat as far as starting pitchers go. I wonder how much of that is/was attributed to their pitching coach?

5th starter spot

It doesn’t matter much whether or not they have the 5th starter pitch on April 10 or 11 (because Padilla will end up starting on 5 days rest once in his first three starts no matter what), but it appears the Dodgers have made their choice. Per the game notes:

I have his upside as solid rf, downside replacement rf, likely fringe average rf.

Thoughts? :o

I know you like him.

by Chad Moriyama on Mar 31, 2010 5:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Scott Van Slyke

Upside: A better RF than Ethier, because he has more power than Ethier showed as a 22-year-old in the California League, and his defense is better. Van Slyke is a “true RF,” rather than an LF playing right like Ethier.

Downside: While Van Slyke’s SO rate is not ridiculous like Kyle Russell’s, it is high enough that I have concerns that Van Slyke may not make enough contact the higher he goes in the pros, so he could end up a AAAA guy. The hitting prospects that I rate as having “high floors” are the guys who don’t whiff much in the minors, like Ethier, Loney, DeWitt, and DeJesus.

Likely Outcome: The gap between his ceiling and his floor is so huge I honestly have no idea how Van Slyke is going to turn out, which is why I ranked him ONLY #13 in our system. Am a “high” on him? Only relative to the usual authorities on prospects, it seems. At this point I am certainly not writing his ticket to Dodger Stadium, or any other MLB park. I think 2010 is a very important year for him.

by CanuckDodger on Mar 31, 2010 5:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m about on page with you, I think, though I don’t see the huge hitting upside quite yet. His swing is sort of like Russ Mitchell and May in a bad way. :o

The thing I miss most about the regular league I was in is definitely draft day.

The league I just finished on Sunday

has owners from Boston, Washington, and Arizona. Last year one guy couldn’t make it as he was on vacation on Kaui but instead of bowing out of the league he hired someone to be his proxy and he spent 12 hours on the phone doing the auction.

I agree, it was my favorite part

Online made it much easier but not nearly as fun.

Just don't get too drunk

at the beginning of the draft and blow a third of your money on the first two players bid on. Otherwise, you will have a couple of hours to kill. Every live auction draft has that guy. Don’t be that guy! :)

Apparently the Giants are commemorating the 10th anniversary openning of

Telephone Park. It openned with a Dodgers’ win…much the way Candlestick was closed down to baseball. I like the trend here.

They are inviting Barry Bonds and Jeff Kent back for that event. I suggested via Twitter that they also invite Kevin Elster. :)

LOL, Great line, thanks for the twitter posts. They help make conference calls more enjoyable to sit through.

Just an FYI for Kenley Jensen fans

Sergio Santos was a lousy hitting SS for Arizona and I stopped following him. Turns out he was converted to a pitcher and just made the White Sox roster. I only bring this up because he was just converted last year. That is quite a jump.

Take a look at his 2009 season. He went from A to A+ to AA to AAA and now he’s in the big leagues. How about that?

His minor league stats are horrendous!

How is he already in the big camp with a minor league WHIP of nearly 2, a decent portion of which is the 6.3 walks/9 innings?

From the SB Nation White Sox writer
. I’ve seen all of about 10 pitches from Santos this spring, and I don’t need to see any more. He’s got a big fastball and a functional breaking ball. The Sox will lose him if he doesn’t make the roster. And even though he hasn’t quite demonstrated major league control as of yet, that fastball and his limited time on a professional mound would seem to make him an ideal candidate for camp Cooper’s learn-on-the-fly approach.

I guess because they would lose him they are going to try to baby him through the learning curve. I remember his arm as a SS, it seems we are seeing more and more big arm futility hitters being converted to pitchers.

Sort of like stashing a rule 5 draft guy, keep him or lose him.

Also, they don’t have Jon Link anymore. ;)
