Jamey Carroll named opening day 2nd baseman [IMPORTANT UPDATE]
After the Padilla announcement it would be hard to for Joe Torre to shock Dodger fans this spring but Joe Torre managed to do just that when he announced that Jamey Carroll would be the opening day 2nd baseman. When making the announcement Joe said
DeWitt did everything we asked but turn the double play. Until we see that he can turn the deuce we are going to have to go with the guy we know can handle it. When DeWitt bobbled the easy ground ball yesterday it just reinforced our decision that he wasn't ready to handle the job yet.
UPDATE: APRIL FOOLS!

Its definitely a scenario
I could see Torre doing, which is what sold it so well.
LOL

Does anyone remember Ceasar Izturis' hot start to 2005?
He hit .345 with an .818 OPS through early June, then his average dropped to .295 in 11 games after hitting .044/.085/.044 in that span going 2/45, both singles.
From June 2nd to July 19th (missed the first 14 games of July) he did not have a multi hit game. He hit .090/.125/.120 and was 9/100 with 3 walks. I honestly cannot remember a worst stretch of hitting than that in my life. Though I am off to investigate Andruw Jones next ;)
I know he was hiding an injury after June, but I can’t even fathom how someone can start off so hot then fall off the face of the earth. After his .345 with an .818 OPS start on June 1st, Izturis hit .167/.209/.217 in 221 at bats in 54 games.
Ouch :(
Heck yah
I even spent a complete game punching him into the all-star ballot.

He was literally on fire that year. It was obviously an offensive fluke, but he had a tale of two seasons, couldn’t he have just been consistent. Then again, that team was injury riddled and it had Oscar Robles, Jason Repko, and other scrubs starting…

Izturis' 2005
good kind of lucky before June 1:
Apr – .379 BABIP
May – .380 BABIP
bad kind of lucky after June 1:
June – .120 BABIP
July – .254 BABIP
August – .220 BABIP

Yes,

The best episode is the one with “Suzy”. The part where they are at her funeral is the best thing I’ve ever seen on a sitcom, hahaha.
Great episode! My favorite is the masturbation contest. Lmao.

No way. Joe saw the post about him pitching two scoreless innings last year. He’s the opening day starting pitcher
No, no, the opening day starting pitcher

The best AFD jokes are the ones that are out there, but totally believable for some ridiculous reason. This one suffices.
I think the Vicente Padilla decision
made this one seem more plausible that it worked well on that level.

With Zach Duke starting
couldn’t this actually be true? Even if DeWitt is considered the 2nd baseman Carroll could start the opener in Pittsburgh.
Funny and caught me too but could end up true.
I'd like to think
that will stay true. Also, that Torre would start the regulars regardless.
More importantly
the Phillies were a team who had few injuries in 2008/2009. Blanton is down and the back of the rotation is now Kendrick and Moyer. I expect more injuries this year.

Is it safe to say that the Diamondback Front Office did not talk to this surgeon before picking up Webb’s contract or is this just something Ned and Byrnes have in common?
Per Rotowire:
Webb (shoulder) was told by Dr. Michael Lee that his recovery from August shoulder surgery could take a full year, Jack Magruder of FSArizona.com reports. He had a cortisone shot on Wednesday and will be shut down for five days. Beyond that, there’s really no set timetable for Webb that the D-Backs are sharing right now. Ultimately, the lack of progress, conflicting reports, and information revealed on Thursday are all signs that he could miss a few months of the season — not just April. At this point, Webb should be considered a lottery ticket in 2010, at least until he’s throwing from a mound and clearly making progress toward getting back into the D-Backs’ rotation.

And since you’re here, I’ll just fire way.
Looking at the ETA, you have Lambo and Robinson with an ETA of 2011 and Xavier Paul will (I assume) still be in the system at that point as well. What roles do you see for these guys in 2011? Assuming Lambo has an excellent 2010, I could see him as either the replacement for Manny (though that’s unlikely) or the replacement at first base is Loney is moved. That would leave Paul possibly playing in Manny’s spot though really being a utility outfielder. With Robinson, are you just assuming he will be a late season call up?
by Michael White on Apr 1, 2010 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions
The Organization
Has no effect on the ETA. I’m just saying when I think they will get more than a September call up.
Thanks for that question, i’ll add to to the primer questions.
by Chad Moriyama on Apr 1, 2010 3:43 PM PDT up reply actions
Paul/Lambo/Robinson
I think Paul is a 4th outfielder, so him being in the system is not a problem.
Lambo and Robinson have similar ceilings but in different ways. I have Robinson ranked higher because he has more ways to affect a game. Defense could be plus-plus in left, he can run, and it’s easier to be an average driven pinch hitter with speed, etc.
I have confidence in Lambo, but he has to hit to affect a game. I’m not convinced his bat is so advanced in comparison with Robinson that he deserves to leap him. Even the .280/25 homer projection I have for him wouldn’t be sufficient, I think.
You are looking at a potential good defender with .780-.810 OPS in Robinson either center or left, or a .830-.840 OPS guy with fringe defense in Lambo.
by Chad Moriyama on Apr 1, 2010 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions
Could you explain
why a Gerry Sands is 10 spots below a Scott Van Slyke? I have them about equal and if you put a gun to my head I’d put Sands over Van Slyke given that Sands has produced at each level while Van Slyke only has hit in an offensive fueled league. Defensively they seem to be the same.

I don't see anything about Kyle Russell?
Or is he talking about Russell Martin?
by Chad Moriyama on Apr 1, 2010 4:20 PM PDT up reply actions
Same thing with the Robinson/Lambo thing in a way
Sands has the arm for right but I think he plays best at LF or maybe first. I think Van Slyke plays right, which contrary to WAR ratings, I do believe is the more valuable position.
The higher strikeout rate has to concern me, he’s like Kyle Russell with less production in a way right now.
If he was 20 or something, where he was younger and had more time than Van Slyke/Russell then I would give a power/patience guy with fringe defensive upside more of a break, but he’s not much younger than those two.
Hence, Van Slyke>Russell>Sands.
If you want to make the case that Sands should be as high as 25, I have no problem with that. They are sort of interchangeable at that point depending on month to month performance, honestly.
by Chad Moriyama on Apr 1, 2010 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions
By the time Sands is Russel's age
he will be glowing in AAA.

in the majors at some point.
Withrow, Gordon, Martin, Miller, Elbert and Lindblom.
I think predicting position players is much riskier.
You see six guys on that entire list making the major leagues?
There are six guys on that list who are pretty much already there, much less with future projections.

Revised lineups
Earlier Indians lineup didn’t have a DH. Now it does…
Indians:
Cabrera SS
Sizemore DH
Peralta 3B
Kearns RF
LaPorta 1B
Valbuena 2B
Redmond C
Brantley LF
Bixler CF
Carmona RHP
Dodgers:
Furcal SS
Kemp CF
Ethier RF
Ramirez LF
Loney 1B
Blake 3B
Anderson DH
Martin C
DeWitt 2B
Haeger RHP
I can hear Eric now on Saturday
Joe, Blake DeWitt started the vast majority of games at second base, what else would like to see in order to feel “comfortable” with him at that position?
My followup is, Nick Green seems like a nice guy, but isn’t another bullpen guy a more needed player at this time.
Better question
“Isn’t an extra batboy a more valuable piece then Nick Green?”
That lineup
almost makes me want to go to the game. If Santana was here, I’d be on my way.
