Game 5 Chat, Part II: Johnson's Final Inning Edition

Rafael Furcal has been on fire so far this season.

Rafael Furcal, the MLB leader in doubles (four) and stolen bases (three), has scored a run in all five games this season.  Gaby Sanchez's three-run homer has been the big blow so far.  Marlins 4, Dodgers 3 after five innings.

Josh Johnson is at 93 pitches.  Time to get him out of there...

Last season, he allowed one hit on 15 balls in play

This season, it’s 0 for 2, but both were very weakly hit (popout to SS, dribbler in front of the plate; unsure of the breakdown last year)

by Eric Stephen on Apr 10, 2010 6:23 PM PDT up reply actions

you don’t throw that backdoor slider on martin now….

by LAD17 on Apr 10, 2010 6:23 PM PDT reply actions

Martin looks much better at the plate. It has to be the increase in size, he’s not selling out trying to pull everything.

by oshea2002 on Apr 10, 2010 6:23 PM PDT reply actions

That’s what she said.

by Tripon on Apr 10, 2010 6:24 PM PDT up reply actions

I wish Steve Lyons would say something like

“This Dodger team will never win the World Series.”

Belliard came out of his shoes on that spinner…just missed it

Where’s Shaqfor3? He should be getting to the Sanchez HR by now.

LOL what the hell is that guy doin right now hahahha

by LAD17 on Apr 10, 2010 6:27 PM PDT reply actions

Actually that was Uggla and Ramirez’s fault.

Horrible middle infielding by the Marlins

I hate GA in the 2 hole.

by silverwidow on Apr 10, 2010 6:30 PM PDT reply actions

I’d go Martin 2, put GA 5th in between Manny and Blake. Have some combo of Loney and DeWitt 7, 8

by oshea2002 on Apr 10, 2010 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions

You have to keep Blake and DeWitt hitting behind each other in that order

by vadodger on Apr 10, 2010 6:32 PM PDT up reply actions

even though i’m not happy about no results, this was funniest inning I’ve ever seen.

by LAD17 on Apr 10, 2010 6:30 PM PDT reply actions

I just invented a time machine

And I’ve brought back a young Vin Scully that travels outside the NL West

by aducker on Apr 10, 2010 6:31 PM PDT reply actions

That still wouldn’t do me any good unless you make it so that extra innings allows you to choose which broadcast you want

by vadodger on Apr 10, 2010 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah, this is a KCal game right? Even on DirecTV Extra Innings you can’t get it then. I hate KCal.

by oshea2002 on Apr 10, 2010 6:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Why can’t they make it like Gameday Audio where you can choose which broadcast?

by dsm9412 on Apr 10, 2010 6:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Extra innings does, at least on DirecTV and Time Warner

by Eric Stephen on Apr 10, 2010 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Is Torre serious? Why use Ortiz in pressure situations?

by Tripon on Apr 10, 2010 6:32 PM PDT reply actions

Torre has lost his damn mind tonight, the Padilla squeeze and now this?

by oshea2002 on Apr 10, 2010 6:33 PM PDT up reply actions

He’s still a few weeks away no, finally throwing to live batters, right?

by oshea2002 on Apr 10, 2010 6:34 PM PDT up reply actions

a few days away for that…hopefully he’s on a rehab assignment by end of next week.

by Eric Stephen on Apr 10, 2010 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Right now we have 4 nobodies

in Ortiz x 2, Weaver, and Monasterios. It’s inevitable that they will pitch at some point in a close game.

by Eric Stephen on Apr 10, 2010 6:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Plus

it will be decision time in a week or so when Kuo is back so you have to know which guy to dump

by Eric Stephen on Apr 10, 2010 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Which Ortiz should they dump?

by vadodger on Apr 10, 2010 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

They both suck ass, but Russ can’t even throw strikes half the time.

by oshea2002 on Apr 10, 2010 6:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Not sure what you will get tomorrow with Haeger, so keep Troncoso to one IP for tonight.

by Eric Stephen on Apr 10, 2010 6:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t understand the need to keep using the Ortizes.

by dsm9412 on Apr 10, 2010 6:33 PM PDT reply actions

ramon will be on roster this whole season, russ won’t.

by LAD17 on Apr 10, 2010 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Hellooooo, everybody!

Just got home from the King’s home finale. What a letdown. I see the Dodgers are losing as well. Not a good day for L.A. teams

by The Ram on Apr 10, 2010 6:38 PM PDT reply actions

Plenty of time left

plus we get to face the Marlin pen. 3-4-5 coming up

by Eric Stephen on Apr 10, 2010 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

That explains earlier

Christopher Lloyd tried to move the RF foul pole, and dislodged the wall padding.

by Eric Stephen on Apr 10, 2010 6:40 PM PDT up reply actions

We can't win a home shootout to save our lives

And Quick has completely imploded. Get Bernier up for the playoffs or we’re getting swept

by oshea2002 on Apr 10, 2010 6:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Torre pulled Padilla at the right moment, instead of waiting until it was too late. If the Dodgers end up winning, part of it will be due to that decision.

by berkowit28 on Apr 10, 2010 6:40 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

That was a spinner waiting to get crushed, but Manny missed it

by Eric Stephen on Apr 10, 2010 6:41 PM PDT reply actions

The good thing about Padilla tonight is he lowered his ERA to 11.42

by vadodger on Apr 10, 2010 6:45 PM PDT reply actions

Oh look, it's the 7th

And Steve Dilbeck still hasn’t posted a depressing, negative blog post on LA Times to keep us cheered up…

Vicente Padilla is the first opening day starter in LA Dodgers history to fail to pitch 5 innings in each of his first 2 starts

by Eric Stephen on Apr 10, 2010 6:56 PM PDT reply actions

I read that as, Vicente Padilla is the worst opening day starter in LA Dodgers history. Weird.

Sherrill's getting all the blame here

but umps deserve a little too, as Sherrill (and pretty much everyone else) was squeezed. Not easy to pitch when nothing BUT down the middle pitches are being called strikes. And yes, Matt Kemp should get a little bit of the blame, too. Obviously that’s gonna be a minority opinion around here.

I agree. Padilla and Sherrill are both a mess right now, though. Ultimately both are replaceable if they don’t straighten up, although I still rue what Ned gave up for The Brim. Just depends on how long of a rope they get before a phantom trip to the DL. Stults might be handy right now too.

by NotJoeTorre on Apr 10, 2010 7:51 PM PDT reply actions

I’m not defending Sherrill’s performance tonight, who could, but gee, he was the Orioles closer until we got him. (And the guy some fickle Dodgers fans wanted to replace the Ox). Using him in that spot wasn’t unreasonable. His mechanics are just a bloody mess right now.

by Little Blue Bicycle on Apr 10, 2010 7:54 PM PDT reply actions

Just because he was a closer doesnt mean he is the right person to use. Considering that his stuff is nowhere near where it was even last year and he has never gotten right handed hitter out, using him there is responsible. He has never been good against righties, and with a 3-4 mph loss, he is going to be even worse.

by UCLADodger32 on Apr 10, 2010 7:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I’ll agree with this. I don’t have a problem with using Shrerrill in save situations, he has shown he can do it in the past. What I don’t like is the fact that our best reliever is unavailable in this situation because he pitched in low-leverage situations the previous to days. If he had saved the previous two games, then there really is no gripe whatsoever.

by OB12 on Apr 10, 2010 7:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I remember when Torre got the job, some Yankees fans came to DT and warned us that he couldn’t manage a bullpen.

I guess the big question is

What has happened to George Sherrill since last season? He just isn’t the same pitcher.

by dsm9412 on Apr 10, 2010 8:03 PM PDT reply actions

Loss of velocity, poor command. He was also extremely lucky last year and didnt pitch nearly as well as his traditional stats indicated. He was due for some heavy regression, but the stuff he showed up with this year takes care of that and then some.

by UCLADodger32 on Apr 10, 2010 8:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I just don’t follow the AL, but isn’t he usually a slow starter?

by Little Blue Bicycle on Apr 10, 2010 8:05 PM PDT up reply actions

For those who are blaming Russ Ortiz for tonight's game, here are a few points:

In last night’s game, Hiroki Kuroda pitched 8 innings after the Dodgers had an off-day. In other words, they had their bullpen to work for the 9th inning. So even if Russ Ortiz had a rough-go at it, Torre still had a ton of options at his disposal in a low-leverage situation. But no, Torre brought in Broxton in and 7-1 game and thus used him when he should’ve used someone else. I hate Russ Ortiz as much as the next Dodger fan, but this one wasn’t on him. It’s all Sherrill and Torre on this one.

by Nofatmike on Apr 10, 2010 8:05 PM PDT reply actions

And it goes back to torre before that as well. He blew the game in Pittsburgh by not bringing in Broxton in a tie game in extras, and then was “forced” to give him work the next day in a blowout. He is just no incredibly inept at running a bullpen it is shocking. He’s so freaking lucky he had Mariano Rivera to lean on for so many years that he couldnt screw up all of the talent he had in NY.
