It is Will Savage Night but Caseras Slams his way into the headlines
Will Savage night went about as expected for a 25 year old pitching non - prospect. Who is Will Savage and why should we care about him? For starters Will Savage went to El Camino Real High School which is down the street from my house. Actually that is all I got but that is cool enough to get a TBLA headline. Savage went from ECR to College of the Canyons, and then onto University of Oklahoma where he wowed the scouts enough to be drafted in the 26th round with the 787th pick by the Phillies in 2006. He hurt his elbow and was released by the Phillies. He spent the last season pitching in the independent leagues and did enough that the Dodgers offered him a contract. He was a strange choice to start the home opener for the Loons but there he was on the mound. With little expectation he acquitted himself well going 6 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs. This might be the last time we talk about Savage but he represented the Conquistadors well.
With all the main pitchers having already pitched the offense needed to provide some highlights, and over looked 1st baseman Steve Caseras came through with a grand slam and five runs batted in.
AAA - John Ely made his first start in the Dodger organization and it was not pretty. He went 5 2/3 walking five and striking out 3 while giving up three runs. The dude who came over with him from the White Sox, Jon Link got the one out save, helping his buddy John Ely to the victory. Most of the offense was again provided by John Lindsey who did what he does bet. Knock the snot out of the ball while playing for Dodger AAA teams. Coming into this year Lindsey has hit 56 home runs playing for Dodger affiliates. He'll probably have 80 by the time this year comes to a close.
AA - The only thing to talk about here is that Dee Gordon got his first two hits in AA. The offense that was expected from Gordon/Lambo/Perez/Robinson/Van Slyke/May has not materialized yet in 2010. .
High A - Aguasviva got the start but only managed to go four innings. He was followed by Booth(win), Mann, Saint Claire, and Koss (save). Steve Caseres provided most of the offense with five runs batted in, including a first inning grand slam to get the party started. Delmonico get on base four times via three walks and a basehit. Bridger Hunt played in his first game since 2008 and made the start at 2nd base going one for four.
A - We already discussed the starter Will Savage so lets go to the bad news. Nick Gaudi who was lights out last year in the Pioneer Rookie league found full season hitters to be a tougher go as he was batted around to the tune of three runs in less then an inning. Justin Miller looks like he not only got demoted back to the Loons but to the bullpen as well. The heavy sinker wasn't doing much sinking as he was clipped for three hits and two earned runs. Luckily the offense was productive enough to make a game of it by scoring eight runs. Chris Jacobs hit a three run home run, Jerry Sands hit a two run home run, Galvez and Songco chipped in two hits. Blake Smith only had one hit but was another double giving him five in four games.

on the bright side...

…4 hits in 5 2/3 ain’t bad, either. Control is supposed to be his strong suit, so hopefully, the 5 walks are an aberration.
damn blake smith is on fire
jacobs with his first HR… im expecting a breakout year from this guy or at least some improvements
Not only that...
but he’s quickly becoming a very tough out (only one K in 18 ABs so far). Guess last season was merely a transition year for Smith and nothing more, lol. Even Aaron Miller struggled in his AZL debut before finding his bearings in GL last season as he finally made the full-time conversion to starting pitcher. Truth be told, that whole Loons middle order is stacked with RBI guys like Cavazos-Galvez, Songco, Sands (is THIS guy for real?!?), Wise, and potentially Jacobs. No wonder they’ve been scoring runs at a ridiculous clip and they’re doing it in a league not primarily known for that kind of offensive output…
Delmonico
Time to give this guy some love? Feels like 5 years ago around here: big club struggling but prospects intriguing. Can name ten pitching prosepcts off top of head, which is good. We just need a breakout or two on offense.
Always liked Delomico's
bat, but how he handles the catching position will determine his worth. Lucas May is stills struggling with the position and he’s been at a few years now.

BH and I saw him in spring training during practice, but not much could be gleaned from that. I believe it was Delmonico, Alex Garabedian, and Matt Wallach manning catching duties for drills.
The one thing that stood out is that Wallach was a definite coach’s son. He had every detail down pat, giving instruction to the infielders and other catchers, and even correcting (AA Manager) Carlos Subero on a few occasions. If Matt Wallach is lacking anything, it’s definitely not baseball aptitude.

Like I said in the Inland Empire Roster Breakdown
Matt Wallach will back him up as he learns how to become a future minor league coach.
