Lambo Goes Yard in Lookouts Win

Dodger minor league hitters slugged 7 home runs on Wednesday, but the most significant HR belonged to Andrew Lambo, as he finally proved to Dodger prospect fans that he still has some pop left in him.  Hopefully he’ll continue his hot streak and hit plenty more homers this season to prove that he can be a legitimate power threat at the big league level.

AAAJohn Ely had a very solid start, and the Isotopes won their game 6 to 1.  For Ely, he allowed 1 run and struck out 5, and now has an ERA of 3.00 for the season.  In addition, batters are hitting just .235 against him through his 3 starts.  Brent Leach followed up Ely’s performance with 1.2 innings of hitless relief.  The offensive player of the day was Lucas May, who went 3 for 4, hit his 2nd homer in as many starts, and had 4 RBI’s.  Xavier Paul also had a big game as he went 3 for 5, and is now hitting .386 through 57 at bats.

AA – The Lookouts played an early game on Wednesday and pulled out a 6 to 5 win.  Mario Alvarez pitched decently enough, but it was Eric Krebs who really shined with two innings of perfect relief and two strikeouts.  Andrew Lambo answered many people’s prayers by smacking his first homer of the season, and extended his hitting streak to 9 games.  Lambo’s average now stands and .354, and his OPS is an impressive .966.  Eduardo Perez also had two hits, including a double.

High A -   Last week, Geison Aguasviva had a horrendous start in which he allowed 9 runs in 1.2 innings.  5 days later, Aguasviva completely turned things around by allowing just 1 hit in 6 innings, and striking out 6.  How a guy goes from one extreme to another is beyond me, but whatever he did differently worked on this day.  Edwin Contreras, who put up pretty good stats in the Pioneer League last year, made his High A debut and it wasn’t pretty, as he walked 4 batters in 1.1 innings.  Nevertheless, I’m happy to see that the Dodgers are pushing Contreras against tougher competition because I do see him as a fairly decent prospect with some updside (I ranked him as the 83rd best Dodger prospect heading into the season).   Offensively, Kyle Russell led the charge with a 3 run homer, and he now has 4 home runs on the season to go along with his .346 average.  So far, he is having the big season that we all predicted.  Pedro Baez also had a homer, which as his first of the season.

AJerry Sands continues to rake as he hit two homers on Wednesday night.  His OPS for the season is now 1.309, and honestly I’m not sure what else I can say about him.  Some people want him to get promoted, but until an outfielder gets injured in either High A or AA, I don’t see him getting promoted until midseason at the earliest.  And even then I’m not sure it will happen because of the roster crunch that the Dodgers minor league system is facing.  Mario Songo also hit a homer for Great Lakes, which was his third the season.  For the other Loons hitting prospects, it was a slow night as nobody else really stood out.  Will Savage got the start for the Loons, but allowed 6 runs in the loss.  Nick Gaudi, however, pitched 3 scoreless innings in relief.

aguasviva

Coolguy ..nice job..
if you look at recap of the last game for aguasviva he was obviously rattled in 1st inning and may not have had good stuff..
in 1st inning of last game where he gave up 8 runs..
walk,single,triple..then ball hit to pitcher..and he throws it away!!
then single ,groundout and then single OFF pitcher..
then next batter reaches 1st base because of fielding error by pitcher!!
and so on…
Aguasviva was his worst enemy!!
He is a solid pitcher..a ver y good prospect….i look at him as a LHP D Lowe…a ground ball guy. This year will be a big test for him.

Inland Empire

I live 20 minutes from Visalia, where the 66ers begin a 4-game series tonight (weather permitting). If I can get to a game, I’ll do a write-up and post it afterwards. Have to look at the pitching matchups.

John Ely

His ERA of 3.00 is outperforming his FIP of 4.31.

Of the potential LAD starting pitching candidates this year, the most impressive FIP at this early stage is Towers with a FIP of 2.84. James McDonald has a FIP of 5.23 and Scott Elbert has a FIP of 5.40.

This is obviously a pitching top heavy farm system

but there are a ton of outfield prospects that we’ve got in AA and lower. Out of Robinson, Lambo, Van Slyke, Russell, Songco, Sands, Galvez, (newly re-prospected) Blake Smith, Garcia, etc…the next decade for the Dodgers could be incredibly good for the Dodgers MLB team. Obviously most of these guys will likely not pan out, but some of them look like they could really turn into every day MLB players. I’d really like to see what Sands can do against better competition. Best case scenario for that would have to be one of Lambo/Robinson/Van Slyke going to AAA some time in the summer and (I would guess) Kyle Russell getting the call to AA, opening a spot in High A ball.

Gotta love potential upside on a lot of these hitting prospects.

I'm bullish on the future too

Just the sheer volume of names bodes well for the future. Looking at the payroll worksheet, we’re going to need to hang onto these guys for the future. (I also think we’ll need to dump Sherrill this offseason.) Shoot, even X. Paul is back on the radar. Good times :)

by kinbote on Apr 22, 2010 10:21 AM PDT up reply actions

I know a lot of them won't stick

But having this many names with at least pretty good potential is so great. 2 years from now I see the Dodgers being a top 5 farm system again.

Agree

Just looking at the deferred money we owe, we have to continue restocking from within. I can’t wait to see some of the promotions we make midseason. Our whole system could be shaken up. (Maybe we’ll have decided the fates of Elbert/McDonald/Lindblom by then!)

You know better than I do

But I’m surprised to see the optimism. I know only a little, but the Dodgers have famously spurned investment in their farm system over the past two years.

Does that investment change your opinion? Do you think the Dodgers have had/will have a higher success rate in converting picks into legit prospects/major leaguers? To what will they owe that success?

Logan White

He’s the best in the biz :)

by kinbote on Apr 22, 2010 2:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks, but I'm really curious

I have trouble believing that Logan White — as good as he is and as valuable to the franchise as he is — can take a team that is in the bottom five in farm investment and turn it into a top five farm team.

But, like I say, I don’t know much and could be wrong. Do you really believe that in two years, without a monumental change in the dolals invested in the farm system, the Dodgers will have a top-five farm?

You're right

Top 5 might be a bit optimistic, but we’re just now seeing a new swell of talent that looks really good. In the offseason, some of the prospect mavens here were talking about our outfield depth. I didn’t really see it. Now, we have legit prospects in the OF at both AA and A- (including an absolute breakout by Jerry Sands). Also, our young pitchers decided to start the year on fire, including some names I either had underestimated or never known about (Magill, Wallach). If we hang onto our guys and if we keep adding judiciously, I think we can be #5-#10 in two years. I think our pitching might be top 5 right now.

by kinbote on Apr 22, 2010 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Top five?

No.

Bottom 7 or 8 like they are ranked by BA?

No.

by Chad Moriyama on Apr 22, 2010 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions

this system should be top 5 right now

But Bell and Santana were traded. If he has one more good draft… maybe a good corner IF… and our guys progress, it is at least a top 10 system.

I also think Elbert’s stuff is too good to be having this much trouble in AAA and will rebound. If the young pitchers, along with a couple of the OFs, maintain their hot starts(and if Gordon can really hit this well at AA)… this system is amazing, and has good depth..

I believe we used to say/hear things like this about Greg Miller….

true

I feel that Elbert has dominated at every level, including be above average at AAA in the past. i think this is just a early season thing(and Ive always like elbert for some reason, i still want to see him succeed in the rotation)

Lambo/Sands

The nice thing about these 2 guys..is they are 1b/Oers… so if they do not pan out in OF they can replace Loney and give some punch at 1b….esp JSands..
Sands will get promoted to A+ later this yr and lets see how he does..there and next yr in AA.
By 2012..we should have many top prospects beating on door for bigs…
pitching and hitting..

by coloblue on Apr 22, 2010 1:35 PM PDT reply actions

Now we just need Baez to break out. Except for DeWitt, we have almost nothing in the pipeline for 3b.

by kinbote on Apr 22, 2010 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions

And if Baez doesn't pan out as scheduled...

Dodgers could always pluck one from some other club’s farm system whose path might be currently blocked at the ML level. They a;ready appear to have a logjam in OF with all these players suddenly making themselves known in the prospect rankings. Pehaps they can deal from a position of strength there, but that’s just my take on it. A bit too early to tell, for that matter…

by rosinbag42 on Apr 22, 2010 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions

sorta like what the As and Jays did with Taylor and Wallace

The As needed an OF and the Jays needed a 1B/3B, so they flipped prospects.

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Apr 22, 2010 3:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, exactly like what happened with those two clubs

personally speaking, I’d rather have Baez pan out. I’d very much like to see the Dodgers farm system continue to crank out productive homegrown players that can help the ballclub. I don’t see ’em contending for a potential WS title without a core of farm-raised talent leading the way.

Yeah

he hit a home run and now he has enough power to replace Loney. LOL
