Matt Kemp Has 20/20 Vision
He didn't score or drive in a run during the three games in Washington DC -- hardly any Dodgers did -- but Matt Kemp is still having an amazing April. He is hitting .316/.379/.645 through the first 18 games of the season, with seven home runs. Also, when he touched home plate in the third inning Thursday in Cincinnati, Kemp became the 52nd Los Angeles Dodger to both score and drive in 20 runs in a single month.
Kemp joins Tim Wallach (in 1994) as the only LA Dodger to accomplish the 20/20 feat in April, which is understandably rare since the season used to start much later in the month than it does today.
| LA Dodger 20/20 Aprils | ||||
| Player | Year | Gms | Runs | RBI |
| Tim Wallach |
1994 | 23 | 21 | 23 |
| Matt Kemp | 2010 | 18 | 20 | 20 |
There are still five scheduled games left in the month for the Dodgers, weather permitting of course. Kemp still has a chance to join a more exclusive company, the 25/25 club:
| LA Dodger 25/25 Months | ||||
| Player | Month | Gms | Runs | RBI |
| Tommy Davis | May 1962 | 28 | 25 | 25 |
| Tommy Davis | July 1962 | 26 | 26 | 25 |
| Pedro Guerrero | June 1985 | 25 | 27 | 26 |
| Mike Marshall | Sep/Oct 1985 | 35 | 26 | 37 |
| Gary Sheffield | June 2000 | 28 | 25 | 30 |
| Nomar Garciaparra | May 2006 | 28 | 25 | 28 |
- Tommy Davis had a hell of a year in 1962, winning a batting title while driving in a club record 153 runs. His worst RBI month that year was the paltry 22 he drove in during August.
- Everybody remembers Guerrero's historic 15-homer June.
- For purposes of classification, March games count in April and October games count in September. Marshall in 1985 scored 24 runs and drove in 30 during his 30 games during the month of September.
- Sheffield was as good a hitter to ever wear a Dodger uniform.
- Who can forget how hot Nomar was during the first half of 2006?
This is the second 20/20 month for Kemp, who scored 22 runs and drove in 27 last August. There have been just nine LA Dodgers to reach the 20/20 club more than once:
| LA Dodgers w/Multiple 20/20 Months | |
| Player | Months |
| Willie Davis | 6 |
| Shawn Green | 6 |
| Mike Piazza | 5 |
| Steve Garvey | 4 |
| Gary Sheffield | 4 |
| Tommy Davis | 3 |
| Raul Mondesi | 3 |
| Pedro Guerrero | 2 |
| Matt Kemp | 2 |
Willie Davis and Shawn Green lead the pack with six 20/20 months. Green is the only LA Dodger to have three such months in a row. From June to August 2001, Green scored 65 and drove in 70 runs in an 82-game stretch.
Here is the full list of 20/20 months in LA Dodger history:

and kelly johnson
and man people would rather NOT have over dewitt has hit his MLB league tying 7th home run of the season…
he has 7 times the homers as blake dewitt does EXtra base hits..
yes he wont be among home run leaders at the end of the season.. but for all the people ridiculing me for rrather having kelly johnson…
I'm not saying he hasn't been better, or even that he won't end up being better
But I wouldn’t expect KJ to end up with the same amount of homeruns that Kemp does by the end of the season.
Who’s ridiculed you for that? Johnson had a bad year last year, but has been a good player before. For the price he signed for I’d have loved to have gotten him. Even so, though, Dewitt still have a .400 OBP, even if his slugging percentage is total shit right now. It will all even out, and I’ll guess he’ll have somewhere around a .360 OBP and .375-400 SLG%
they know who they were
yes dewitt might have those numbers…
bu they will pale in comparison to the .370 OBP and 480 Slugging of johnson
You are incredibly high on him, and I’d be willing to bet he comes nowhere near those numbers. .350 OBP and .425 SLG% would be his 2010 ceiling IMO.
2007-2008... 2 years when he was healthy he put up .457 and .446 slugging
in the braves pitching park… now he gets to go to a htiters park..
seems like you are underrating him to me
I don't remember any ridiculing
I thought we as a group were disappointed Ned did not sign him given the price they paid for Carroll and the price the Diamondbacks paid for Kelly.
If there was ridiculing it was a minority and not the majority, and you can’t be a Joan of Arc when the minority ridicule.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Kelly Johnson was in a Loy of dodger fans offseason wish lists. Once it became clear he wasn’t on the teams radar, they moved on. It seemed to me to be the ultimate low risk high reward signing but oh well.

Joel Sherman wants Carlos Silva on the Dodgers.
So let’s put on our GM hats to try to help. Carlos Silva (2-0, 0.95) is among the few Cubs bright spots, especially considering that Chicago flipped headache Milton Bradley (another terrible Cubs contract) for him. The Dodgers desperately need, at the least, an innings-eating starter or else their woeful rotation severely jeopardizes the chance to three-peat as NL West champs.
Key Dodgers relievers Hong-Chih Kuo and Ronald Belisario recently came off the DL, which makes George Sherrill more expendable. He makes $4.5 million in 2010 and utilityman Jamey Carroll makes $1.55 million. Put them together and you have the $6 million the Cubs are paying Silva (Seattle is picking up $3.5 million of Silva’s pact this year and $5.5 million next season). As a free agent signed last offseason, Carroll must give permission to be traded before June 1.
The dollars are a wash, which is vital for the Dodgers, who are in penny-pinching mode with their owners in divorce proceedings. Los Angeles would be obligated to $8 million next year on Silva, but that would be almost totally negated by the $2.3 million owed Carroll in 2011 plus not re-signing Vicente Padilla, who is making $5.025 million this year.
The Cubs get Sherrill’s closer pedigree and, by dealing Silva, reopen the rotation spot for Zambrano. The Dodgers get a workhorse-type starter to aid a rotation that had a 5.14 ERA and five of 15 starts go fewer than five innings.

Why does that actually make sense to me
It makes me feel just dirty. The one good thing about Silva is that he doesn’t walk people. I don’t mind getting rid of Sherrill and Carroll, though would either side really go for this deal? And would we really want either side to?
Pass
I’m not married to either Sherrill or Carroll, but Silva’s ERA of 0.95 so far compared to an x-FIP of 4.03. Last season Silva posted an x-FIP of 5.53. If LAD wanted that production in the starting rotation they could have kept Stults.
A deal like that wouldn’t kill the Dodgers, but it doesn’t do much either.
by Michael White on Apr 25, 2010 3:38 PM PDT up reply actions
It’ll probably cost the Dodgers Kuroda, Padilla, and Sherrill next year if they do the deal.
The Dodgers would have to pay Silva 8 million next year if they traded for him.
But they wouldn’t have to pay Sherrill the likely than more $5 million they would owe him, another $5 million or so for Padilla, and Kuroda the $8-$10 million or so he would probably get for another year in the majors.
Now i"m not saying that the Dodgers would let all of them go, but if they did trade for Silva or somebody of his nature, than the Dodgers rotation for 2011 would potentially look like
Billingsley
Kershaw
Silva
Withrow
Elbert/McDonald/Heager, etc.
I did NOT realize that Silva was under contract for another year
reading comprehension fail.
Yes, put me in the firmly against camp in that case.
by Michael White on Apr 25, 2010 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions
You may not be enamored of Silva. I’m not either. But who the hell is gonna pitch next year? With three spots to fill, Colletti will almost certainly sign someone of roughly that pedigree and paycheck. It might to be Silva, but it’s not gonna be gold either.

There are probably at least 50 pitchers available next year (or in the system) I would take my chances on before Silva
by Eric Stephen on Apr 25, 2010 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions
Sure.
But how many of them will be available at the price Colletti will want to pay?
And I agree about the system. I’d rather see those guys. But I am assuming there will be a signing, and not for a lot.

I meant guys available for cheap…not counting the top guys.
But I share your concern about the pitching staff. We head into 2011 with a ~$92 million payroll (including Sherrill) with no LF and only Kershaw and Billingsley firmly in the rotation (insert Jackson/Lyons joke about Bills here). We desperately need internal options to succeed.
by Eric Stephen on Apr 25, 2010 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions
I’m starting to wonder if Gurnick just makes stuff up. Now he’s listing JESUS CASTILLO as a candidate to start Tuesday. He may be pitching decently in AA, but this is a non-prospect. I am 99% sure he will not see the big leagues with the Dodgers in 2010 or ever.
True...
So Ely is an option?? Withrow is not ready yet… And he was horrible today: 2.1 IP, 7 ER, 2 BB and 4 K…
Amanda Righetti <3
To me there are only four real options, and they are all in AAA: Towers, Elbert, McDonald, and Ely.
Of the four I would pick Elbert, but if I had to guess I think the club will pick Towers.
by Eric Stephen on Apr 25, 2010 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions
i wouldnt pick elbert..
his comand is very poor and a 2 inning outing because he gives up too many walks and needs to be taken out is not an option… we need to go with the safest bet to go 6 innings
I agree command is an issue, but they also head into New York with a well rested bullpen and will for the next two days have an 8-man pen (although maybe no Troncoso tomorrow). Plus, there’s a good possibility the pitcher will only need to make one start.
Pitching 2-3 innings because of too many walks, or because your pitches get tattooed all over the yard (e.g. Towers) is a concern with all the candidates.
by Eric Stephen on Apr 25, 2010 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions
Plus, there’s a good possibility the pitcher will only need to make one start.
That’s the biggest reason why it won’t be Towers (assuming the club doesn’t go with Towers.)
by Michael White on Apr 25, 2010 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions
If we knew now that the guy in question
will only make 1 start, which guy would you pick? I would choose McDonald. I know he has major league stuff. I know he can get major leaguers out. I would run J-Mac out there.
I would vote JMac too, but that’s just because JMac is a favorite of mine
by Michael White on Apr 25, 2010 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions
The only reason I would not pick McDonald is concern over his broken fingernail. He is eligible to come off the DL tomorrow, and if I was convinced he was fine I would have no problem with J-Mac making that start.
Plus they could have him in the pen for a week until Padilla comes back, too.
by Eric Stephen on Apr 25, 2010 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions
Is McDonald's confidence a concern?
If I remember right, McDonald has questioned his own ability a few times. Coming straight off the DL, do they want to risk his long-term stability in a situation where he’s likely to struggle?
Yes
When he was optioned to minor league camp in spring training, Torre had a long talk with McDonald, and said the next day J-Mac has a lot of things to work on. I think they would rather he take another month or so to put together a string of success (hopefully) before thinking about bringing him up.
I don’t think he will be recalled but I would be OK with it if they did.

I think we can probably eliminate Elbert
Listen to this recent Ned interview at 10:30 into it. He basically said Elbert wouldn’t come up without fastball command.
I'll give this to Ned...he is straightforward
This was from almost two weeks ago, the day before the home opener:
Ned, when asked about Elbert’s 6 shutout innings in his debut, with 10 Ks:
"Well, let me ask you a question: how many guys has Scott Elbert walked?"
answer was 5, followed by a long pause by Ned
"It’s the same topic. I love him, he’s a competitive kid, he’s got a great arm. I’ll bring up anybody if we have to, but I’m in no frame of mind to bring anybody up here just to bring them up here if they cannot command the fastball."
Since then, Elbert has had to poor starts (both 4 innings, both 3 walks, a total of 13 runs), so the point still stands that he is unlikely to be brought up.
by Eric Stephen on Apr 25, 2010 5:21 PM PDT up reply actions
So it’s down to Towers and Ely. (I don’t believe the Castillo report).
You know who I want there. :)
Whoever it is for us should get some support.
I think that it is John Maine’s spot for the Mets on Tuesday. At least he is awful. That might be another “Play the Over” game for Eric.
Wrong link
Your link leads to an extensive (= very long) profile by TJ on Coletti’s career. There is no interview as such, nothing about Elbert nor anything else in the last 100 days or so.
Can you try again please? I’d like to hear or read this interview. Thanks.
The link works (again)
You have to scroll down the page, and there is a table on the right side with the header “Mason & Ireland.” The audio is in that table (just press play)
by Eric Stephen on Apr 25, 2010 8:48 PM PDT up reply actions
Serious?
How would anyone know that? Thanks for telling me, but there’s no way I’d ever guess that.
When I click the Mason & Ireland ad, I get to something that has (again) a whole bunch of options. The “Play” button refers to a podcast description as follows:
“Mason & Ireland: 4/22
3-time Super Bowl Champion Willie McGinnest talks NFL draft and the Ben Roethlisberger suspension. Plus, ESPN SportsCenter Anchor Neil Everett celebrates the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day with Steve and John in-studio. "
Nothing about Coletti or Elbert there. Do I need to sit through 10 minutes of other stuff to get to it? April 22 doesn’t look very promising anyway. The other options refer to even older podcasts.
So I think I must not have read your instructions correctly, pr something equivalent. Is there some other Mason & Ireland box, or sopme other Play button?
There is a circular logo that looks like a play button. It plays the audio within the page itself, and you can fast forward by moving the dial (it’s like a clock that winds around the play button)
by Eric Stephen on Apr 25, 2010 9:49 PM PDT up reply actions
There is a section with the header “High Stakes and Fierce Loyalty.” Within that section is the table on the right that includes the audio.

Found it at last
Thank you – that last description helped. I had been clicking the Mason & Ireland link/table cell on the far right column.
I think Ely is definitely in play. If Elbert and McDonald were dominating, then one of those 2 would get called up for sure. Towers might not, simply because once Padilla is back, Towers is out of options so they might want to hold off on using the Towers option.
by Michael White on Apr 25, 2010 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions
Tomorrow is a big day
Padilla has his MRI, so we will find out just how serious his injury is.
The ABQ game starts at 3:35, and Ely is scheduled to pitch. We will find out tomorrow whether that is still the case.

Please let it be Ely for two reasons
1) its not Josh Towers and 2) if he pitches well, both he and Link on the roster means we got valuable production in exchange for Pierre uselessness.
I like #1 the best, but #2 is icing on the cake

Castillo is older than both Elbert and McDonald (along with Bills and Kershaw, too).

aaron miller
taken out after only 4 innings 2 hits 1 run(homer) 3 walks and 2 Ks
wonder why he was taken out so early
I have seen the Lance Berkman line drive off the head of Chris Jakubauskas from yesterday a few times, and it’s tough to watch. I am amazed and horrified watching the ball bounce back from the mound past the catcher, but am reminded that even though it is sickening, that bounce is actually a good thing because it means the kinetic energy stayed with the ball and not his head. It would have been much worse had the ball simply stopped after hitting his head.
I remember I think Vin talking about that for Kuroda's ball off the head
that if the ball had stopped cold, it would have been MUCH worse for Kuroda.
Wow it is raining hard in NY right now…why are they still playing this game?
Harbinger of the next 3 days?
Heard tweets from Mike from MSTI and Molly Knight
Mike doesn’t think they’ll play tomorrow, Tuesday is more likely. Mike has tix for tomorrow’s game. My hunch is that Molly will be at Citi Field for the series.
