All Signs Point to John Ely
John Ely appears to be the fill-in starter for the Dodgers, taking Vicente Padilla's place in the rotation tomorrow night in New York. Today's Albuquerque Isotopes' game notes show not only Tim Corcoran starting tonight in place of Ely, but also list Josh Towers, the other most likely candidate to start for the Dodgers, as the Albuquerque starter Tuesday.
The Dodgers haven't officially announced who will start tomorrow night, but will likely do so before tonight's game, which is in jeopardy because of rain. Ely was acquired along with Jon Link from the White Sox for Juan Pierre this offseason. Link holds the active roster spot Ely will likely take tomorrow night. Ely would also need to be added to the 40-man roster, although that is a formality as both Cory Wade and Brad Ausmus could be moved to the 60-day disabled list to create roster space.
Ely, who turns 24 on May 13, was 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 18 innings with the isotopes so far this season.

I couldn't care less about the sign
but I’m glad the hiking area is now part of Griffith Park.

Ely's last start got him to the majors
0 walks over 6.1 IP. Ned hates walks quite a bit according to that interview linked yesterday.
Ned is a ninny.
If he hates walks that much, then he should sign and trade for guys that don’t walk people.
career walk rates: BB/9
Russ Ortiz: 4.7
Ramon Ortiz: 3.1
George Sherrill 4.4
Padilla: 3.2
You do realize 3.1 and 3.2 are better than average walk rates, right?
by Eric Stephen on Apr 26, 2010 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions
It is not just the walks
Its how agressive the starters are (I don’t think they ever thought Stults ever trusted his stuff and he gave htters too much credit).

If Atilano can beat us, then anything can happen. I just realized we came very close to being swept by the Nationals.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Nyjer Morgan’s aggression is probably the only thing that prevented it (ignoring the Butterfly Effect of course)

I was of the opinion he simply
forgot he had a pitcher on the bases in front of him. I love that play, it happens so rarely, and you can’t blame the pitcher for jogging at the end, he has no idea the guy behind him is going for 3rd, and he’s simply trying to conserve energy for the mound.

Yes and No
I mean ,with two outs you have to run hard until you have reached whatever base you are going to.
by robotmadeofnails on Apr 26, 2010 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions
He's a pitcher
going from 1st to home at that point in the ballgame, you can’t expect him to have much gas left. He may not have been jogging, he may have been gassed.

True, I am speaking from a rec league softball perspective :)

the flip side is
by my count, we’ve had AT LEAST six other games so far that pretty much could have gone either way, and four of those broke for the other team. Fate owed us.
wow, if this is true, great timing on my part- and totally lucky!
I bought tickets for tomorrow night’s game back in January. Then again, it looks like there might be a rainout tonight, in which case WEDNESDAY would be Ely’s first start. Lucky I now have tickets for that game, too! :))
I'm thinking I might pick up tickets to tomorrow's game as well
Where are you sitting?
The Dodgers and the Mets have an off-day on Monday August 9
The Dodgers are home the Sunday before and are in Philly on Tuesday. The Mets are in Philly on Sunday, then home on Tuesday. If things got desperate because of rain outs in this series, could that be a potential make up day? (That would make 28 straight days with game for LA, so a waiver from the union might be needed? The Mets have other nearby off days.)

There is open date on June 21st that has less consecutive games
The Dodgers would have to stay over from their series in Boston, NY is already at home.

What are the possibilites that they pitch Ely
In the nightcap then they could use Link in the first game if necessary (assuming there is a doubleheader tomorrow).
I would bet money on that exact usage should there be a double header.

Furcal SS

Ethier RF
Blake 3B
Loney 1B

Carroll 2B
Kuroda P
Case of Torre
going with the superior fielder with GB Kuroda on the mound? If so I like, though I’d still like to see Belliard get hacks against the LHP.

Umps better not let Lavin touch his hair with his pitching hand.

Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?

I'm still quite happy
with the fact that Lavin has a World Championship and the current coach does not. I don’t know why this makes me happy.

Ely is 23. Stults is 30. I’ll take my chances with the former.
by silverwidow on Apr 26, 2010 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions
Really? You weren’t high on Heager, and he basically preform as Stults did for the Dodgers and what Ely is likely to do.
C’mon, man. Ely posted a 7.8 K/9 vs. 2.8 BB/9 in the minors. Haeger’s numbers were much, much worse than that.
by silverwidow on Apr 26, 2010 12:50 PM PDT up reply actions
Stuff wise, they’re all similar.
I’d even argue that Heager’s knuckleball is a superior pitch to whatever Ely can throw.
What exactly is your beef here?
Are you disappointed that Stults was sent packing? If Ely and Stults are the same then the simple fact that Ely could sit in AAA until the need came (Tuesday), off the 40 man roster, and cheaper than Stults is the reason Stults is gone now.

The Red Sox are targeting Kurt Suzuki of the A’s.
How much value does Victor Martinez have
if he’s simply a DH/part time 1st baseman going forward?

Angels hitting coach Mickey Hatcher said on Friday that so many people were giving struggling third baseman Brandon Wood advice, "His computer is about ready to blow up."
Wood looked better over the weekend, but one member of the Angels says his swing is too long, "not major-league caliber." Hatcher believes Wood’s problem is more mental than mechanical. He told Wood he wants him to stop being tentative and start being aggressive.
"Take your best swings," Hatcher said. "If you make outs, be dangerous."/blockquote>
“If you make outs, be dangerous” is an epic quote.
by Eric Stephen on Apr 26, 2010 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions
I think Wood is a case of the Angels screwing up their prospect chances of making the major leagues by never playing them.
They are playing him now.
I don’t know if they really ever had a spot for him before this season. And Scioscia hasn’t pulled the trigger yet.
Very rarely, on a contending team, will a team let a prospect play through his rough spots. Dustin Pedroia is one example of where they did.
Wood is also playing great defense
according to the guy who follows the team for baseball HQ. So that alone will keep him in the lineup for an extended trial.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
As BH said
they never really had a spot until now. They seem to have made the right decision with Morales, Aybar, and Kendrick. The team is loaded with prospects who got to play. Napoli is such a lousy catcher he may never be a full time catcher. Hard to fault the Angels for that. I don’t think any team in baseball in has done a better job then the Angels in clearing out space for the prospects they wanted to give a shot to. If Wood doesn’t work out it won’t be because they didn’t give him the opportunity.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
And some would argue
They got burned by the McPhereson/Glaus decision though Troy was not worth his contract but his bat might have proved useful.
They did
but it was an unforeseen back injury that ended his attempt to fill the Glaus void. Until then he had been a fairly healthy prospect. He is a alot like Wood in that they both will hit home, while striking out. The big difference is that Wood is an excellent athlete who might be a gold glove 3rd baseman. As I said before he may never be a star but there is a place for guys like Pedro Feliz when they bring a glove along with the home runs.

Molly Knight is covering the game
and has this semi-grim news:
Vincente Padilla on his arm: “In the past I’ve been able to throw through this, but I can’t even do that. Never had pain this bad before.”
Sounds like it may be awhile
That is what he said the other day
which is why the MRI today should be interesting
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Worse case scenario
Padilla is done for the year.
Do they sign Washburn/Looper/Pedro or let a combo of Haeger/Ely/Towers/Elbert/McDonald fill the back end of the rotation?
In case everyone missed it, Houston went on a tear and now has the same record as we do. So when we talk about teams selling at the deadline, we shouldn’t be casting stones.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I think they would sign Washburn or Looper if Padilla is done for the season.
by Eric Stephen on Apr 26, 2010 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions
I would agree
I guess the question would be, can they? How much wiggle room do they have? We simply don’t know. As awful as the trade idea for Carlos Silva was, it might make sense from the Dodger standpoint. I would have to stifle a gag reflex with the thought of Carlos Silva being on our roster, but eventually I’d come to terms with it.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
They should be able to sign either one of those guys for under $2 million. Where is their demand? Then again, we are paying Ramon Ortiz $1 million, so what do I know?
by Eric Stephen on Apr 26, 2010 1:57 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah
I’m still puzzled by that. I never paid attention to the dollars until it was brought up. I had assumed like most everyone he was on a minimum deal.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
If Padilla does go down
or even if misses only a month, that would leave 2nd time Wolf as the only free agent starting pitcher that Ned has signed that has been able to pitch over 190 innings. Kuroda did get 180 in 2008.
Schmidt – ha ha
1st time Wolf – 102
Kuroda – 180, 117
Hey guess what, we haven’t signed very many free agent pitchers in the Ned Era.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I thought a few weeks ago, there were reports Pedro was close with the Phillies, but it doesn’t sound like anything gets done before midseason.

PLEASE NO!
Not Josh Towers. I had to watch him many years live here in Toronto. Sure he’s ok, but when he’s off, HE’S “TRRRIBLE”, to quote Charles Barkley.
