Dodgers, Mets Rained Out; Doubleheader Tuesday
Tonight's game with the Mets has been rained out, the Dodgers’ first rainout since July 27, 2007 in Colorado , or 1,003 days ago. Tomorrow, both clubs will play a straight doubleheader, beginning at 1:10pm Pacific time.
The schedule for this series could involve three games in about 27 hours or so:
- Game 1: Tuesday, 1:10pm (Hiroki Kuroda vs Johan Santana)
- Game 2: Tuesday. about 30 minutes after Game 1 (Charlie Haeger vs. Oliver Perez)
- Game 3: Wednesday, 1:10pm (TBA vs. John Maine)
With Haeger pitching on three days rest (per Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times), the Dodgers don't have to make a roster move to call up a starting pitcher until Wednesday's game. That means they will have a fully rested, eight-man bullpen available for tomorrow's doubleheader.

6.5 hours of baseball
And then the biggest game of the year for the Lakers.
At this point, if they lose (and Phil can correct me) at least a good chunk of my money will be already in for next year’s tickets.
has he even been officially called up yet?

The Mets juggled their rotation
giving us a great matchup for Game 1 tomorrow:
Tomorrow’s probables: Game 1 Kuroda vs. Santana Game 2 TBA vs. Perez
Ely must be happier he's
going to face Perez in his first major league start instead of Santana. Of course the game was a gimme before now he’s going to have to perform. If we lose game one the pressure will be intense.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
If they can juggle, why can't the Dodgers?
Punt the Santana game with the house money lineup and Ely. Take their chances against Perez.

Johan
is nothing more then a six inning pitcher so I don’t think I’d punt.

I disagree
They can beat Perez no matter what. They are putting their best foot forward against the big man

Man, I thought that about Scott Olsen
which is why I’ve been cranky for 24 hours. Getting shutout by Olsen is ridiculous. That will be the best game he ever pitches.

This

As somebody pointed out earlier, you want Ely to start the 2nd game, that way Link is available in relief the first game.

Dodger schedule shows early game on
1:10 PM KCAL / MLBN MLB.TV Game 2 PRIME / ESPN MLB.TV (MAKEUP OF 4/26 PPD)
I can't decide if 34 innings of baseball in one day
would be awesome or suck.
Most likely: both.

Dodgers going to run wild in Manhattan
and then play 2 games in 27 hours. That should work out well.

Let’s see, you have Bills, Kemp, and Loney working on a seven figure salary for the first time, with Kuo not far behind at $950k. Sounds like a fun night out in Queens.

Update
per Dylan Hernandez:
Kuroda is pitching the first game tomorrow and Haeger the second.
So we get Jon Link for two more games
That makes sense
This rainout does mean that someone else is going to have pitch on Saturday or Haegar goes on short rest twice.
Tuesday – Kuroda; Haegar
Wednesday – TBA
Thursday – Kershaw
Friday – Billingsley
Saturday – TBA
Sunday – Kuroda
Monday – Off
Tuesday – Kershaw
Wednesday – Billingsley
Thursday – Haegar (?)
Friday – Kuroda
Saturday – TBA
Sunday – Kershaw
Wow
They almost have to pitch Haeger on 3 days rest twice then, right? I don’t see them calling up two starters.
by Eric Stephen on Apr 26, 2010 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, this rainout really screws them up this week.
Unless you see the MLB starting debut of Monk on Saturday.
This is why baseball, and knuckleballers, are awesome
The last Dodger starter to make consecutive starts on 3 days rest was Tom Candiotti, in 1993:
July 4
July 8 (3 days rest)
July 11 (2 days rest!)
by Eric Stephen on Apr 26, 2010 4:34 PM PDT up reply actions
Candiotti gave up a total of 4 runs in 11 innings in those two starts, including 1 run in 5 innings on 2 days rest.

Wouldn't you rather have Haeger
to eat innings on Wednesday if they tax the bullpen on Tuesday?
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Haeger really hasn't been much of an innings eater yet this year
By that logic, Kuroda is the most likely to eat the innings, so he would perhaps be best suited to pitch on Wed with the taxed (and now shorter by 1 man) bullpen?
by Michael White on Apr 26, 2010 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions
Man I love the Pierre trade before
But if Link and Ely can actually be useful this week, WOW. even better!
Some news
1) As BH noted, tomorrow’s game 1 is on Prime Ticket, and game 2 is on KCAL
2) Jamie Hoffmann does not have a clause in his contract requiring him to be on the 40-man at any point.
I believe we inferred to much
from this column from Hoffmann’s hometown newspaper, last September:
He said that he is not back on the 40-man major league roster now because that can’t happen until next May.
“That was part of the deal also,” Hoffmann said, “but hopefully I can get back on that 40-man roster as quick as possible.”
The only “deal” involving May was that he couldn’t be on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster before then, which sounds like a tool deftly used by his agent to ensure he would be available in the Rule 5 draft, thus giving him more of an opportunity to stick with a big league club.
But the Dodgers confirmed there is no clause that Hoffmann needs to be added to the 40-man at any time.

oh, man!
I was flying into New York at 4:30 tomorrow- I’m going to probably miss the entire first game, as well as part of the second now! dag nab it. >:(
Bullcrap
It is not raining that bad here at all… it’s actually stopped. If they let the game go on in NY last night in NY… there is no reason that this game cannot be played.
Have you seen the radar? It’s supposed to get nasty over the next 2-3 hours
by Eric Stephen on Apr 26, 2010 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions
Really?
It definitely does not look bad outside right now…on the ground and in the air.
Had enough rain the past few days…cannot wait to get back to California. Non-rainy California…that is…
The field is soaked, the forecast is bad and you probably had a decent sized crowd coming tonight
So they decided to call the game so they could get the teams back home/hotel early so they could get to the ballpark early.
There is the question that will no doubt clear up this discussion. I didn’t even think of that. Ha!
by Eric Stephen on Apr 26, 2010 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions
Omaha
And I suppose that the field might be wet. Soaked..different story. If the forecast is bad…understood.
After watching the ESPN game last night though, I’m convinced that baseball can be played in some pretty nasty conditions.
Oh...silly me... did not clear that up earlier!
Sorry about that. I was just talking about the ABQ/OMA game. I should check the forecast here, if everybody was talking about NYC.
Apparently…even the forecast says light rain. Only light rain…
I wonder if teams are even less likely to play minor league games in adverse weather conditions because at the end of the day, the results of those games simply don’t matter. Losing a prospect in a minor league game played in bad weather would be maddening.
by Michael White on Apr 26, 2010 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions
Next year, if the Los Angeles team is bad, I think I’ll follow one of the minor league clubs. I’ll get milb.tv, I’ll listen to the games, I’ll get myself a cap.
When I’m that into, say, the Loons, a game cancelled due to weather will be frustrating and maddening. But I will be patient and understanding.

it's amazing the variety of hats they make these days for pro teams

When I was a kid
my favorite hat was a Carolina Mudcat hat. Big ole catfish on the front of it. Sweet hat. I just looked at the IE caps. The route 66 sign is sweet on those hats as well.
When I was a kid
I thought the Portland SeaDogs hat was the coolest one of all. My parents found one and bought me one and I thought I was the coolest kid in my little league….

I bring a hat to work
pretty much every day. I wear it home. I hate to not have a hat on. The last 5 losses we have taken, I have had a certain hat in my truck. While I am worried about the implications of bringing the hat back to work, It is easily my favorite hat. I am not normally superstitious, but this is not normal. Do I have to do the unthinkable? Get rid of the hat.
I almost never wear hats or caps - not even Dodger caps
I think my head shape (widest at the temples – 7 5/8 hat size on my skinny 5’7" frame) makes them/me look (even more) ridiculous.
Sometimes on Saturday morning I throw one on to cover the bed head when I go to Lowe’s / Home Depot for the honey-do project.

Two weeks ago, I wore my Kemp T-Shirt to the ballpark. (The Lincecum game). I came home and Spawn decided she wanted a bath. OK, I gave her a bath. Then she went Number Two in the bath. Ugh. It happens, but ugh.
So I got out the bleach to clean it up. Then I looked down at my Kemp T-Shirt. It’s spotted pink where the bleach got on it.

If you had a ticket for tonight's game
Here is the official word from the Mets re ticketing for the doubleheader.
FLUSHING, N.Y., — The New York Mets have announced that tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers has been postponed due to rain and has been rescheduled as part of a single-admission doubleheader tomorrow, April 27 starting at 4:10 p.m.
Only tickets marked “April 27 – Game 15” for tomorrow’s night game will be honored for the 4:10 p.m. game and the second game to follow.
Tickets from tonight’s rainout [April 26] will not be valid for admission tomorrow. Fans can exchange tickets in person tomorrow at Citi Field for tomorrow’s games, or at a later date for any future game, subject to availability and according to standard rain-check ticket exchange policy on Mets.com.
From Gurnick:
Torre still wouldn’t announce a pitcher for Wednesday. Candidates to take the start of disabled right-hander Vicente Padilla include Double-A right-hander Jesus Castillo, Triple-A right-hander Josh Towers and Triple-A left-hander Scott Elbert.
I notice one name conspicuously absent from that list.

vr, Xei
I doubt Casey Blake starts both games, so pencil in Belliard for the night cap (two day games in a row for Casey).
I don’t think they would bench DeWitt twice, so start Carroll for defense with Kuroda pitching against Johan, and start DeWitt in the nightcap.
As far as the OF, Johnson was going to start against Ollie Perez today, but given that IMO they will split LF between Johnson and GA, look at this:
GA vs Johan: 7 for 27, 1 HR; GA vs Oliver Perez: 4 for 8, 2 HR…pencil in Reed Johnson in Game 1, Anderson in Game 2.
IMO, Loney, Furcal, Kemp and Ethier will start both games.

Gurnick with a Weaver update and more rotation speculation:
Weaver – whose back strain probably wouldn’t have put him on the disabled list if the Dodgers hadn’t had Hong-Chih Kuo ready for activation – was fit enough to throw a 50-pitch bullpen session. Weaver said he felt fine and expected to throw off the mound every other day until he is eligible to be activated on May 7. Weaver is a likely candidate to then replace Padilla in the rotation.
