John Ely Starting Tomorrow
The Dodgers still haven't officially announced it yet, but Ely's hometown newspaper, The Southtown Star, caught up with him today:
Ely, 23, got word of the promotion on Monday after going 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA in three starts for Albuquerque, the Dodgers' Triple A affiliate. He'll replace Vincente Padilla, who went on the disabled list Sunday with right forearm soreness.
"I can't believe it," Ely said via phone from Omaha. "I'm going to try and zone in and not look up (when he first toes the rubber). I'm sure I'm going to be nervous. If you're not nervous, you better find a new profession. But I'll be able to handle it."

The Marlon Anderson trade was pretty good, too. :)

The man
has yet to make a major league start and we are calling this trade a win? The odds are high he will suck, but then I guess just moving Pierre’s salary was a win for Frank but I’m not sure it was a win for us.

I'm convinced it was a win
even if Ely gives up 10 runs tomorrow.
Johnson is a better player than Pierre in total, so just getting anything for Pierre, while saving money, makes that trade an easy win.

I'm new at this....
..But don’t we have two prospects that could have taken Padilla’s place on the roster now in Link and Monesterios?
Neither can start
so they needed someone who has been pitching in a rotation so they can hope for at least five innings.

Link is not a starter, he’s a reliever.
Monasterios has been used in relief, and is less likely to be able to pitch very long, at least not right now.

There actually my Father's
He’s in the background holding their leashes. He brings them over when he visits his grandkids. Goldens are the best with kids.
Yeh, love the dogs
When I lost my son in Iraq, I wasn’t fit to be around anyone. My dog got me through the tough times. I got a Lab mix from the rescue center. A couple buck for shots and I got a new best friend.
Sorry to hear that. Pets are indeed wonderful!

Just one more silly question
If the weather is so iffy, shouldn’t they start the double header at 1 pm EDT? I know there must be shufflings of broadcasts and stuff, but the main thing is to get the game in right? Or, is it that there was a sheduled broadcast game at 7EDT and they just had to abide by the sponsors wishes?
I think the main reason is because they wanted to play the games (mostly) back-to-back. I know there’s a brief intermission between them (30 mins.).

From what I understand
the tickets for the regularly scheduled game are good for the 1st game. If they started the 1st game that early you would be making the fans leave and come back for the night game. If the games had separate admissions than they could do what you are suggesting.

Gurnick tells us that Ely is in the Dodger clubhouse, but uses “likely” because the team hasn’t officially announced anything yet.
Former White Sox prospects starting for us on consecutive days. Strange how things work out.

Good catch. I didn’t think of that.

Might as well bring in
Brandon McCarthy to make it a threesome.

Jon over on Dodger Thoughts passed along this pregame note from Torre:
“Blake probably won’t play the second game. Russell won’t catch. We’ll wait and see on Furcal”
Good luck Uek
I’m a fan.

+1
one of my favorites even before Big League. He just has a self deprecating style about him that I found comfortable.

I don't know if it is a hangover from Sundays crappy loss
but I’m not feeling any buzz over the Ely start as I normally do when a prospect gets their big league debut. Possibly it is because I didn’t watch him come up through the system and have nothing emotionally vested in him. Also because I have little expectations.

For me it's because
it’s tomorrow.
I’m psyched for the double-header today. When that is in the past, I will be psyched for Ely.

I’m looking forward to it. He may not be one of “ours” but this is still a feel good story. And if he’s good, maybe it’ll show his hometown team what they missed.
