Duck Talk
via scrapetv.com
For some of his past interviews you can check out the Duck Talk Section where we ask the questions we want to ask and try to see through the
clichéd responses we normally get. For those of you new to Duck Talk, this most of this is a complete fabrication based on interviews within my troubled mind.
Aflac Duck: The Dodgers come home with their tails between their legs. Nothing went right, either the team was hitting when the pitching was getting shelled, or the hitting stopped when the pitching was doing the job. Through out it all the team played the worse defense many of us can ever remember a team playing. If you could focus on one thing that was the catalyst for such a disastrous start to the season what would it be?
NC: Matt Kemp's defense is probably the key to our poor start.
Aflac Duck: Why is Matt Kemps defense so poor this year?
NC: Why is it? Because he got a new deal? Can’t tell you. But you know, it’s below-average. If this is the last day of the season and people are voting for the Gold Glove, his name is not even on the ballot. It’s a shame that he would go from where he was a year ago to revert back to when the ball goes up in the air and you’re not sure where it’s going, or if it’s going to get caught.
Aflac Duck: Wow Ned, your not pulling any punches. At least you didn't blame it on Rhianna. Seems a stretch to question his deal, but the reality is that his defense does suck but since he's your only center fielder you are going to have to roll with it. What do you think of Rhianna and Matt?
NC: No comment
Aflac Duck: I don't get it myself. That June Lockhart forehead scares me. I'd be worried if Rhianna hooked up with John Ireland, then if they had kids you'd have to worry about that combo forehead. I'm not one to talk with my bill or anything, just saying. I hope I don't get to many emails from those who suffer from elongated forehead syndrome, I understand your pain, I just choose to make fun of it.
Aflac Duck: I tweeted your comments on Matt's defense. Seems the mouths are not taking kindly to you dumping on the Dodger franchise player. This is what Dave Stewart just said
What I would suggest for Ned Colletti to do is look at himself in the mirror
NC: You asked me about his defense, I answered the question, what is the problem?
Aflac Duck: I don't know. I wouldn't have a show if you didn't answer my questions. Maybe being brutally honest isn't what they they want to hear from the GM.Oh, he we go; Dave just answered your question.
No, not at all. To me, he didn't need to answer the question. If anything, he should have said, ‘No comment.'
Aflac Duck: So Dave thinks you should not answer questions that would be put your players in a negative light. As an interviewer I'd have to disagree. We can understand where Dave is coming from because Matt is his client, but I'm seeing comments all over the internet about how you bungled this.
NC: I got a lot of respect for Dave Stewart and Matt Kemp, I've known Dave Stewart for a long time. His perspective is his. Everybody's got their own. That's all I want to say about it.
Aflac Duck: I've just seen this comment from noted TBLA commentator Humma Kuvala who is famous for Spawn of Kuvala and nothing else. Humma was asked what is the point of a GM doing these interviews if they aren't going to honestly answer the questions. What do you think of it?
Going on these shows is a PR maxim: if you don’t tell your story, somebody else will tell it for you. Going on a show is Ned’s opportunity to give the Dodgers’ official take on things.
Colletti could have said something like, "Kemp’s had a few miscues this season, no doubt about it, both in the field and on the basepaths. But he proved last year that he is a Gold Glove centerfielder and he stole over X (was it 30?) bases. I wouldn’t be too quick to trash him."
Instead, implying he’s now below average, has taken a step back, and we don’t know what we’re going to get from him — I think that qualifies as going too far.
Also this: it’s one thing for you and I, the public, to say what we will about Kemp. It is quite another for a person in a position of power to say it. He has a responsibility to be more circumspect.
NC:Well I guess if I had the hind-site to study the question in detail and prepare a written answer I might have answered in that diplomatic way. However you blindsided me with the question, and I answered from the top of my head. If I had been any good in PR work I might have stayed in it, instead I downgraded into a baseball management career.
Aflac Duck: Most of the criticism seems to be coming from the mouths of the internet which are not very Ned friendly in the first place. Seems to this duck that it is a little hypo critical. I still maintain that if you had been talking about Juan Pierre's defense last year or Blake DeWitt's defense this year no one would said a critical word about your honesty. And lets face it, you are right. Matt Kemps defense has blown. His base running has blown. That is why I asked the question. I didn't ask you what you thought of his offense because the best player on the team is expected to be the best player on the team. I'm a little concerned that with all this criticism of your honesty that you won't be honest with me anymore and these interviews will become pointless. Tell me that isn't so Ned, tell me you will continue to answer the questions that I ask that the fans are interested in hearing?
NC: No comment
Aflac Duck: Are you worried that Manny will be able to stay healthy enough to play LF in a non DH league?
NC: No comment.
Aflac Duck: What do you think of Blake DeWitt's defense so far?
NC: No Comment
Aflac Duck: Does Chad Billingsley have emotional issues that might keep him from reaching his potential?
NC: No Comment
Aflac Duck: What did you think of the job the two guys you got in the Pierre did?
NC: No comment
Aflac Duck: What do you think of Russell Martins sloppy play behind the plate with a runner on 3rd?
NC: No comment
Aflac Duck: What do you think of Loney's lack of power?
NC: It is disturbing that Loney has yet to exhibit the power we need from our 1st baseman. He better get with it or I'm going ship his ass out for Chris Davis. That guy has plenty of power.
Aflac Duck: Whoa Ned, comments like that will start up another firestorm. I think you were better off doing no comments then being honest. I can't even imagine how up in arms the mouths are going to be after seeing you give the lowdown on one of the most popular Dodgers. Impugning his power. How dare you. This interview is over.

One question
How does the Duck resist going after Ned’s hairpiece? You’d think he’d instinctly reach for it, thinking it’s loosened peat moss.
The Duck does not like Neddy sweat
intermingled with his meals.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I was thinking nesting material. But perhaps it’s too wiry on the duck behind.

No question Ned seems a bit off his game
Perhaps Kensai can do a side by side comparison between this interview and his Dec 12, 2008 appearance with the Duck so we can ascertain what is currently wrong with his delivery.

Now that I'm famous
Ned Colletti can give me a big contract.
Of course, when that happens, my comments will immediately start to suck.

Do not give into the temptation to now become more circumspect due to your new found fame!

Your comments will still be excellent overall
but we will see an increase in your spellling/grammar error rate and perhaps a usage of too many words and sentences to get to your point, and the blog owner / editors will blame that for a decline in page hits.

Another question.
Why does Colletti even go on KABC morning news for a once a week chat?
I’ll answer my own question. The reason would be to promote the Dodgers. To remind folks to buy tickets and come see them play. That can be the only reason.
Seems to me that a better candidate for that chat is Torre. Torre is famous, Torre’s are the comments the casual fan wants to hear. What’s more, Torre’s GOOD at that kind of thing — he managed it for more than a decade in New York. The casual fan probably has only a tenuous grip on who Colletti is… why should he be the team spokeman? (Colletti can, and should, comment about building the team.)
Colletti being the spokesman for the team once a week is a bad idea, and it’s come around to bite him.
The Ultimate Ned's Kind of Guy
790 is on my radio in ther morning after night games
and they have promotions every morning to win baseline tickets, or sit in the 790 suite. So yes, there is some Dodger promotion mixed in with the talk.
Agree wholeheartedly. Torre is a personality that the general public likes and is familiar with, making him a good spokesman for the team. Colletti is a personality that the general public doesn’t know or doesn’t care about. He should stay behind the scenes trying to find ways to improve the team in areas that need it.
The only person who can tell Colletti to do this is McCourt, who’s got PR problems of his own at the moment. But he won’t like this negative publicity. I wonder if he’ll say anything to Colletti.
Yes, thanks for the help Ned
Torre > Colletti
Torre is being paid way mor then Colletti …

Lest I come off as too much of a Torre fan
let me just say that his bullpen usage should get him committed to the Tommy Lasorda Home for the Criminally Insane.

Actually
I like Ned’s interviews.
Torre’s bullpen usage wouldn’t be so bad if one, the starters did their job better. Plus injuries to Weaver, Kuo and Bellisario’s visa problems didn’t help.
One thing, Monk may turn out to be a good Rule 5 find.
OT -- two things
First, thanks to everybody for yesterday’s postgame thread. It was a lot of fun on a long afternoon.
Second, question for our hosts/publishers/editors/moderators. You may have read recently about the anti-illegal immigration law passed in Arizona — it’s very controversial. Some have called for a boycott of the state because of it. This relates to baseball in that some fans are calling for baseball teams to remove their spring training facilities from the state. I was thinking about making this into a fanpost — it might engender an interesting discussion. However, it’s political and anything political is dicey, soI thought I’d check with you guys first. What say you?

One more question
Is everybody getting the ads for Cougar Life, or is it just me?
And if it’s just me, just what hellmouth did I cross to deserve this?

I'm getting those over at SOSG.
Which makes sense, since they had that whole April Fools Dodger Cheer Squad inter-rivalry thing goin’ on.
And that’s just the normal bloggers there. HEY-O!

I clicked on it to see how a Couger lives but to my chagrin found out that the Cougars I hunt are only interested in younger/virile prey.

Just for the record
I know Eric is okay with it but I’m not. For this reason. For the most part I like our posters, probably because I know very little about them. Once you post this and they comment on it I’ll be forced to look at them in the light of their post, and I’m fairly certain more then a few will not look good in that light. I’m already having a problem reconciling friends opinion of this short cited racist measure. I’d hate to have to do that with our posters.

Well, this is why I wanted to check it out.
I think the discussion would be interesting — which is why I proposed it — but I certainly see the potential for pitfalls.
If I post it, I hope that we’d explore questions like: what are a baseball team’s role in the community, and what does a team owe a community it visits during Spring Training? Does a sport that features so many players from Latin America imply that it owes anything to that community? Does a team like the Dodgers, which has so many Mexican and Latin American fans, have to respond differently from a team with a higher percentage of white/caucasian fans? Some believe that baseball’s integration paved the way for civil rights milestones that followed chronologically — does this hold water, and if it does, what are the implications for baseball with the new law?
I think those are all important questions, and it’s my belief/hope that that discussion can take place without getting into a discussion of the merits or lack thereof of the law itself, which, I’ll grant, would be fruitless.
So this may not be the forum, and if it’s not, I respect that one hundred percent.

Great post, as usual
I wasn’t sure it the latest front-office induced imbroglio would spawn new Duck Talk or new Ned fan fiction.
And I loved the June Lockhart reference. Excellent.

Funny
Listening to KNBR on way back from lunch. Bob Fitzgerald (who is a White Sox fan) was lamenting Juan Pierre. The phrase “worse than Marvin Bernard” even got uttered!
I went home for lunch
turned on MLB Network, and the White Sox v Rangers game was on. I saw Juan Pierre bat.
He popped out.
