Jason Heyward on deck!

A little late

Don’t you think? WE could have used this at the top of the inning, to keep the rally going?

WHAMMY!

Don’t need a rally thread when the rally had already started.

No matter

hitting a home run in your first major league at bat is special, doing with all the hoopla going on is even more special. Doing after catching the game ball from Hank Aaron is surreal.

whats the point of disputing that?

just to dispute? theres really no point in disputing that….

oritzes weaver and monasterious… not exactly people you want in the game when trying to preserve a lead or trying to stay withing 1 or a few runs..

by matthewmafa on Apr 5, 2010 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions

His point was that most bullpens, including the Dodger bullpen at the beginning of 2009, are comprised of no-names.

most of the back-end ….

The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.

by David Young on Apr 5, 2010 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions

It probably isn’t, but my point is that I wouldn’t make that judgment based on the back end of the bullpen – you just a bullpen from the front end, because that is who is pitching when the games are close. Broxton, Sherrill – assuming he gets his shit together – , Kuo – assuming he’s healthy soon – , Tron – I like that pen. I can’t bring myself to be too worked up about the back end of the pen; plus we all know one of the Ortiz, Ortiz, Weaver, Monestarios group is gone once Kuo is ready.

The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.

by David Young on Apr 5, 2010 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions

An aside, at the time most considered Wade “proven.” Then again, I suppose Troncoso wasn’t.

plus ohman was coming off a great year

mota was good and wade is proven from years before…

ortizes suck and weaver sucks and monasterious although good has nowhere near the stuff as belisario and will prob not be as good as belisario

so well he didn’t get on the playoff roster. 39/24 K/BB ratio in 65+ IP is both not very good and not close to “shut down”. And definitely not worth the $2.3M contract Ned gave him.

K/BB ratio is actually very important. That is one of the biggest indicators of a pitchers skill. There are the rare exceptions for groundball type pitchers like Lowe and Pineiro, but it actually is a good, if not great, indicator.

Exactly.

Seriously though, not expecting Padilla, both Ortiz, and a shaky Sherill to not give up runs today seemed foolhardy. This game was a wash as soon as Torre felt that pushing Padilla 5 innings was worth it.

My question is why people let the national and local media get to them? Honestly, who gives a shit what Plaschke or Buster Olney say? by UCLADodger32 on Apr 5, 2010 2:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree

The worst part about these media outlets writing stupid shit is that the average guy you wind up talking to in public will be citing it as gospel. It aggravates me because it is where most people get their information when it comes to baseball. It makes having a decent conversation nearly impossible.

Why not dog those stats? They give an extremely flawed view of a player, and they are what most mainstream fans and media rely on. Those stats are the ones that create the perception of Juan Pierre as a great leadoff hitter or Derek Jeter as a phenomenal shortstop (pre 2009).

Let’s see if Lincecum can be sober enough to pitch to a win, or if his “herbal tea” makes him think he’s pitching to pixies.

I doubt if he needs to be sober to pitch well

Why couldn’t the Mariners had drafted him and the Giants drafted Morrow? :(

Or Brad Lincoln, that would be even better

He will pitch great so he can get to the post game spread quickly.

I say we trade the Ortiz twins, Weaver, Furcal, Blake, Padilla

and whoever else has wronged us today for Juan Pierre. With him back we’d be unstoppable.

If you give up that package, you should be getting Zack Granick.

I forgot to mention we’d be trading Towers, Hu, and Closser for Granick.

Beckett signs 4 year deal per rotowire
Beckett agreed to a four-year, $68 million contract extension with the Red Sox on Monday, the Boston Globe reports. The $68 million number has been tossed around for a few days now, and it looks like the actual deal is right in line with the early media reports. Boston now has four of its most valuable pitchers – Beckett, Jon Lester, John Lackey and Clay Buchholz – locked up through 2014.

That is a nice rotation to have locked up for the next four years.

Damn it. I missed the entire game thread.

I take it we lost by all the talk. Did we at least look good. Or did we just get beat down by pirated.

I didn't watch

but the hitting couldn’t have been that bad given the box score.

by Michael White on Apr 5, 2010 2:16 PM PDT up reply actions

for the most part, the offense looked fine. Everybody hit the ball hard except for Furcal, and they hit into some really bad luck.

The pitching was awful and the defense not much better.
