A little late
Don’t you think? WE could have used this at the top of the inning, to keep the rally going?
WHAMMY!
Rule number one
NEVER change threads in the middle of a rally.

Who's the duck for the game
Padilla? How many runs / hits did they get off of him, I mean this is the lowly Pirates.
WHAMMY!
The duck will be…
a) Octavio Dotel, who blows the lead in the 9th
b) Duckbill himself, today’s winning pitcher

Didn't Jay Bruce explode onto the scene 2 years ago when he was called up?
I don’t recall that pace continuing

No matter
hitting a home run in your first major league at bat is special, doing with all the hoopla going on is even more special. Doing after catching the game ball from Hank Aaron is surreal.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Pointless 2 for 1
Sherrill in to pitch hitting in Ethier’s spot; GA in RF. Kemp will soon be exhausted.

Braves are going to be fun to watch this year

Zambrano will probably attack a gatorade jug after this inning
"Just by the aura of D.J. Mbenga being there, the shot missed."
3 - 2 pitch about 10 feet over the batters head

Wow, high ball four to the backstop for Sherrill.
Uh-oh, Honeycutt to the mound.

Time to promote Chris Withrow to be our 8th inning guy NOW. We’re the Dodgers, we should be converting guys like Kershaw and Withrow into elite relievers, not save them as okay starters. We got guys like Ramon Ortiz, and Russ Ortiz to make starts.

There is a dark cloud to this game, and this season
I need Jon Weisman’s nutty optimism to soothe me, otherwise my wife will leave me when she finds I’ve hit the bottle yet again.
WHAMMY!
I know…that’s why I want to look into it. I would imagine it’s slightly less accurate than Lawler’s Law :)

Outside of reality
Game is 13-7 Dodgers, but there’s that reality thing, staring me in the face, asking me why I hate it so.
WHAMMY!
Without Kuo and Beli, the bullpen is not good. I’ve never been a fan of sherrill, as hes basically a super loogy.
the "punishment"
of belisario is more important for the team

The man did not show up until the last weekend in AZ
Too blame anyone but him is just showing a negative bias against the Dodger front office
I think Leach could have given you that
BTW, why exactly was Leach relegated to minor league camp so early in ST? Was he struggling?
In other news
my day that started out crappy, then awesome because of baseball, is now back to crappy.
Look on the bright side: Vicente Padilla started this game. At least our hitters were on (mostly) today.
Weaver now in.
Was there really much point in pulling Sherrill at that point? He needs work, it’s a six-run game in the bottom of the eighth, the bases are now empty and there are two outs.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
On the plus side my least favorite pitcher is melting down in Atlanta

I made the comment before that bomb - even more fun for me

Is this game eerily reminscent of the last game of last season?
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
I put forth to the jury that we did in fact lose the last game of the season
which is why we were not playing in the world series.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
We don't use enough
Hoorah’s anymore, maybe that’s what’s causing all the problems in the world?

damn
dodgers.. i was really hoping for a win today..
dodgers.. i was really hoping for a win today..our bullpen doesnt look as strong as last year… a bunch of non names.. like the ortizes and weaver and monasterous..
dodgers.. i was really hoping for a win today..our bullpen doesnt look as strong as last year… a bunch of non names.. like the ortizes and weaver and monasterous..
unlike last years bullpen of “names” like Weaver and Belisario.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
yes
but we now know what belisario is…
we already know what the ortizes are and we know what weaver is and monasterious could become like a belisario.. but for now he is a no name …. to many long relief types who arent shutdown
Which team has the most “shut down” guys in their pen, and how many do they have? The back end of all bullpens are question-mark guys – that’s why they are there.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
last year all we had was weaver
this year we have 4 until proven otherwise
Weren’t Ohman, Mota and Wade in our opening day bullpen last year, along with unproven, unknown Belisario?
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
man do you ever give up
your being annoying.. everything soemeone says you try to prove wrong…
come on u get what i am saying… this bullpen aint as good as last year… dammit
Some advice
1) don’t make “absolute” comments
2) if someone disputes a claim you make, and shows their work, you might not be 100% correct
3) don’t call people annoying
absolute?
wheres the absolute..
i said our bullpen doesnt look AS strong….
people here have to defend the dodgers like its their life… my goodnes
You called the bullpen a bunch of no-names, and Dave disputed that point.
It doesn’t mean the bullpen this year isn’t worse than last year.
whats the point of disputing that?
just to dispute? theres really no point in disputing that….
oritzes weaver and monasterious… not exactly people you want in the game when trying to preserve a lead or trying to stay withing 1 or a few runs..
It probably isn’t, but my point is that I wouldn’t make that judgment based on the back end of the bullpen – you just a bullpen from the front end, because that is who is pitching when the games are close. Broxton, Sherrill – assuming he gets his shit together – , Kuo – assuming he’s healthy soon – , Tron – I like that pen. I can’t bring myself to be too worked up about the back end of the pen; plus we all know one of the Ortiz, Ortiz, Weaver, Monestarios group is gone once Kuo is ready.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
An aside, at the time most considered Wade “proven.” Then again, I suppose Troncoso wasn’t.
by Michael White on Apr 5, 2010 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions
plus ohman was coming off a great year
mota was good and wade is proven from years before…
ortizes suck and weaver sucks and monasterious although good has nowhere near the stuff as belisario and will prob not be as good as belisario
Most people hated the Mota signing and though he had nothing left. It turned out he had a little something left, but not much.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
i loved the mota signing
he did very well last year/…
so well he didn’t get on the playoff roster. 39/24 K/BB ratio in 65+ IP is both not very good and not close to “shut down”. And definitely not worth the $2.3M contract Ned gave him.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
K to BB ratio means NOTHING
as long as he got the outs which he did…. maybe he paid too much but please None of that K to BB stuff in 65 innings to prove your pont..
The bleepin' PIRATES?
What’s the salary disparity again between these two clubs? 2 hundred Billion?
WHAMMY!
Peace out folks
Just wait until the REAL opening day, and AZ in Chavez, that’ll be lots more fun.
WHAMMY!
Joe Sheehan should not be writing roto advice
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Exactly.
Seriously though, not expecting Padilla, both Ortiz, and a shaky Sherill to not give up runs today seemed foolhardy. This game was a wash as soon as Torre felt that pushing Padilla 5 innings was worth it.
It was 8 - 5
with the tying run up. Hardly a wash. I’m not going to defend Torre’s choice of Padilla for this game but he’s in the rotation and will pitch every fifth game and most won’t be this bad.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Steve Lyons expects a rainout that won't be made up
“I think they’re thinking they have 160 games to go.”
On the plus side
The offense had 12 hits. Monasterios looked good. Weaver was perfect. Ethier ripped the ball, but was unlucky.

The worst part about this
is going to be listening/reading mainstream outlets break down this game. Its going to really painful.
Yes
but they will do what you have been bagging on everyone all day about and that is reading to much into one game.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I’m just afraid that all of the dumbass analysts and writers will feel completely validated by this one game. There is nothing worse than hearing plaschke say/write, “I told you so.”
My question is why people let the national and local media get to them? Honestly, who gives a shit what Plaschke or Buster Olney say? They know less about this team than just about everybody on here, and their opinions mean absolutely nothing. The only thing that comes out of listening to that crap is getting upset about it, which doesnt do anybody any good.
I disagree
The worst part about these media outlets writing stupid shit is that the average guy you wind up talking to in public will be citing it as gospel. It aggravates me because it is where most people get their information when it comes to baseball. It makes having a decent conversation nearly impossible.
And again, who cares what the average guy says? They still cite batting average and fielding percentage as gospel. Dont engage in conversations with uninformed people about baseball, and you’ll find yourself to be much happier!
You're probably right
but I would still love to able to watch a game without an internet connection and still be able to have some decent baseball related conversation.
That's why I don't talk to normal people about sports
I am a total sports snob. That’s why I need this outlet.
by Michael White on Apr 5, 2010 2:14 PM PDT up reply actions
Agree. I used to try to convert everyone to advanced stats and look past era, batting average, rbi, etc, but it just wasn’t worth it. There’s so much information out there, that if people choose to be ignorant, thats on them.
I don't think you have to talk those stats to have an intelligent conversation
Just don’t dog those stats.
Let’s see if Lincecum can be sober enough to pitch to a win, or if his “herbal tea” makes him think he’s pitching to pixies.
I doubt if he needs to be sober to pitch well
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Or Brad Lincoln, that would be even better
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I say we trade the Ortiz twins, Weaver, Furcal, Blake, Padilla
and whoever else has wronged us today for Juan Pierre. With him back we’d be unstoppable.

In the last two times the Dodgers have faced the Pirates, the Dodgers have given up 11 runs and lost.

Beckett signs 4 year deal per rotowire
Beckett agreed to a four-year, $68 million contract extension with the Red Sox on Monday, the Boston Globe reports. The $68 million number has been tossed around for a few days now, and it looks like the actual deal is right in line with the early media reports. Boston now has four of its most valuable pitchers – Beckett, Jon Lester, John Lackey and Clay Buchholz – locked up through 2014.
That is a nice rotation to have locked up for the next four years.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Damn it. I missed the entire game thread.
I take it we lost by all the talk. Did we at least look good. Or did we just get beat down by pirated.
