It would be crazy if Eovaldi wins the award and he’s not even on the list.

Anyone going to see the 66ers play the Quakes tonight? I thnk I will be there.

Sounds like fun. I’ve always wanted to go to a minors game. Love the sound effects and music between innings.

I like that it doesn’t matter who wins are loses (for the most part). For me its baseball at its most enjoyable.

BTW

Absolutely love the minor league stuff here. Keep it coming!

I like the Eovaldi pick. Gould is probably going to start in Ogden, which would hurt his chances (1/2 season ball).

Almost always a AA or AAA pitcher

I’d say neither of them have a chance in hell of winning the award.

I picked Link, I mean, Withrow.

by silverwidow on Apr 8, 2010 3:11 PM PDT reply actions

I added the link to IE 66ers audio above.

That link should work for future games as well.

by Eric Stephen on Apr 8, 2010 3:11 PM PDT reply actions

I still voted Withrow.

Actually I would be mad if Lindblom, McDonald, or Elbert win it this year. It’d shown that they they spent the majority of their seasons in Triple-A which either meant the Dodgers stick with the Ortiz’s for no good reason.

by Tripon on Apr 8, 2010 3:12 PM PDT reply actions

Besides talent it is going to be hard for anyone besides Withrow to win

he gets to pitch in AA while everyone else mentioned are pitching in extreme offensive leagues and parks.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Apr 8, 2010 3:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Not true, Withrow only has this year to win it before he gets promoted.

Everyone else is going to have multiple chances to win due to the Dodgers signing veteran FA after veteran FA to block their young prospects.

Its the Luis Gonzales/Brett Tomko effect.

Since that point, he’s pitched in spring training games brilliantly. If anything, TBLA would be even more pro-Withrow then when we voted him #1 prospect.

I voted for Withrow as well.

by Eric Stephen on Apr 8, 2010 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions

yes, here we have him all the way down at the low, low ranking of #2.

They skipped High A for him, he’s still young in “baseball years,” so they are probably just easing him into what could be his first real challenge/struggle as a pro. If he hits, they’ll move him up.

by Eric Stephen on Apr 8, 2010 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Gordon is likely batting 8th when he makes the majors fr the first one or two years.

by Tripon on Apr 8, 2010 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

by bhsportsguy on Apr 8, 2010 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Two requests

I like the mobile version, but I wonder if you could pass on two requests to SB Nation web people:

1) At the bottom of every mobile web page there are a few links (quasi-buttons) enabled, to go to Top of Page, Top of Comments, etc. What I’d really appreciate would be a Refresh link. That would bring the page up to date but bring me back to where I’d left off (as on computer browsers). At least on the iPhone, the only way to refresh requires you to first go to the TOP of the page, then press the Refresh icon there. That means that after it refreshes, you have to scroll all the way down to where you were – 400 comments down – and it’s also very hard to find your place since the comments have no date stamp in the mobile version. Refreshing at the bottom (and finding the same place) would fix all that in one fell stroke.

2) Largely for this reason, I tried using the full version of TBLA. Aside from not being able to unmark read comments on an iPhone (keypad will only come up for text entry boxes, not regular pages), it worked great. Since it auto-updates, no scrolling is required. But eventually, when I wanted to get back to mobile version, I couldn’t find any way to do that. There probably is some way – does anyone know what it is? It got really complicated, since in the full version, I had to log in and couldn’t: the keystrokes must have been going “through” the popup text boxes to the add beneath, since it kept moving me over to new advertiser web-pages. I was in a vicious circle and couldn’t get out. (In the end, I had to delete the page and come back in again.)

by berkowit28 on Apr 8, 2010 5:11 PM PDT up reply actions

You can make your own request. Use the “contact us” link at the bottom of any page. I’ve found them to be quite responsive, but all my “tickets” were for problems, not suggestions.

The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.

by David Young on Apr 8, 2010 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I thought of that. OK. I asked here partly to try to see if there’d be a popular groundswell. ;-) Or maybe if one of the managers like the idea it might get some official support, which could go farther at SB…

by berkowit28 on Apr 8, 2010 5:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Just thought I’d point it out because it is not the most obvious link. Couldn’t remember if I had pointed it out to you before.

The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.

by David Young on Apr 8, 2010 5:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I think another workable option might be to ask them to add a “bottom of page” link at the top of the page since that’s where you will most likely end up using your mobile browser.

by Eric Stephen on Apr 8, 2010 5:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Depends on how my browser is feeling (Safari on my iPhone), but if I just type “truebluela.com” it will re-direct to the mobile site. However, I have the mobile site in the bookmarks.

by Eric Stephen on Apr 8, 2010 5:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Good news on Kuo

from Tony Jackson:

Left-hander Hong-Chih Kuo said he felt good during a mound session in which he threw 20-25 pitches, including breaking balls. Kuo is on the 15-day disabled list with elbow soreness and is eligible to return as early as Saturday, but he’ll probably need at least one more mound session before he is cleared. He probably won’t be sent on a minor-league rehabilitation assignment, although that option is available.

My fear is that Russell projects to so many whiffs in the majors that it is simply too many outs.

I can’t imagine that this was Torre’s plan – he’s not so devious – but that’s what happens when you put your “any guy” as no. 1. He was clearly trying to protect both Kershaw and Billingsley from the pressure and “responsibility” of being no.1, and maybe give a heavy hint to Colletti, and Kuroda got his due last year and then didn’t really carry it through. But it probably should have been given to Kuroda again until he has one of his collapses. The senior guy. He’s a bit of an unsung hero. He’s going to be really good for a while, and copuld match up well to the other teams’ top guys, until something goes wrong and/or he’s injured.

Double A rotation

Courtesy of the Chattanooga Times Free Press:

New Lookouts pitching coach Danny Darwin said Tuesday that Chris Withrow will start Thursday’s game, followed by Alberto Bastardo and Mario Alvarez. John Koronka is scheduled to start Sunday afternoon’s game, followed by Jesus Castillo in Monday night’s finale

by Eric Stephen on Apr 8, 2010 6:43 PM PDT reply actions

What is the point of having John Koronka-donk taking up space at AA? Are there really not enough young arms to fill the AA rotation? Or is he down there to advise the kids on having clean shower shoes and to never throw a punch with their pitching hand?

The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.

by David Young on Apr 8, 2010 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I was surprised by that too. Is he even auditioning for another gig? It would seem he would need to be in at least AAA to warrant interest.

Dodger hire veterans to fill up the rotations in order fill out a roster. Although its usually at the back up catcher’s spot.

From a BA chat with Jim Callis today:
David Bowen (Brushton, NY): The Dodgers are jumping Dee Gordan from Low A to Double A. According to BA, Gordan has a lot of raw talent, but is very unpolished. Is this a mistake?

Jim Callis: I don’t think so. He’ll be 22 at the end of April and they’re trying to jump-start his development a little. It’s aggressive but I can understand their thinking.

I don't think so

Gordon at this point has played 1 game above Low A. DeJesus has performed at AA. Gordon is still pretty far away and DeJesus seems like the next option at SS (IMO.) If Gordon continues to shoot through the system, the DeJesus’s spot is in jeopardy, but we’re not there yet.

My guess is DeJesus passes Hu on the depth chart at SS by the all star break.

Keith, you seem to be really down on Billingsley this year, but are you really expecting him to pitch more like the second half of last season than he did throughout the minors and during his first few ML seasons? I trust your opinion, but it seems unlike you to be swayed by a small sample size when a much larger one exists and suggests that he is better than he was post-hamstring injury.
Klaw
  (1:08 PM)

I’m not down on Billingsley – I’m curious where you got that impression – but simply don’t know what to expect from him. I saw him late last year and the stuff was plus but both the command and the pitch selection were not. He could go back to where he was in the first half of last year, but I can’t predict when or whether that’s going to happen when we don’t have some tangible evidence of what went wrong (and I don’t see why the hamstring would be the sole explanation).

What are your thought on the Dodgers fastracking Dee Gordon to Double A?
Klaw
  (1:31 PM)

Mixed. I don’t really think it’s going to hurt him, but I see him as a one-level-at-a-time guy right now. He’s still pretty slight physically and I didn’t see an advanced approach that screamed out for a jump to the better pitching of AA.

sharp as a tack:

Asked if he was relieved to be visited by Torre instead of Honeycutt, Billingsley replied, “I like to see Rick every now and then.”

Then again, Billingsley said he was unaware that opposing hitters were batting .667 this season immediately after Honeycutt’s on-the-mound chats with Dodgers pitchers.
“I am superstitious, but I think, at the same time, it was a situation where we wanted to change it up and see if his words worked better than mine,” Honeycutt said.

Asked whether recent events have started to affect Honeycutt, Torre laughed and replied, “Maybe. … Maybe.”

vr, Xei

by Xeifrank on Apr 8, 2010 9:03 PM PDT up reply actions

From today, both the Dodgers game notes and the Marlins game notes list Volstad as Friday’s starter.

It sounds like Sanchez could have been slated for Saturday, but MLB.com says (as do both teams’ game notes) Sanchez is going Sunday:

With Josh Johnson going on his normal fifth day after a rough Opening Day start, Anibal Sanchez’s first start of 2010 is now pushed back to Sunday. “I am feeling good,” Sanchez said. “The most important thing is I’m healthy.” Sanchez was available to pitch out of the bullpen on Wednesday.
