No, he looks muscular.
That’s back- and shoulder-fat, not belly-fat.

Up to the second...
.388 AVG/1.169 OPS
10 HR’s/35 RBI’s
I was very pleased
that there was a BABIP comment in the last thread while Haren was racking up all those Ks. I was thinking that in the car as I was hearing this go on on the radio.

In 88 plate appearances with the Texas Rangers in 1989, Sammy Sosa never walked.
John Ely has 14 more batters faced to go.
Oh-oh. And another base hit, that’s it.

For all my critiquing of them the Dbacks announcers have
been very complimentary of Ely all night, including this inning. “What an amazing job by the youngster,” says Grace.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
True
But Grace still blows as an annoucer. Although, he pitched one time and acted like mike fetters. That was great.

Thank you, White Sox.
Serious question: is this already Colletti’s third-greatest trade, after Andre and Manny?

Is 1775 ABs significant enough to go against the book?
Kelly Johnson has a reverse platoon split over his career:
.299/.360/.474 vs. LHP
.251/.343/.430 vs. RHP
I guess not because he only has 563 PA vs LHP
According to The Book, we regress lefties’ platoon skills against 1000 PA against LHP of league average splits for left-handed hitters… This means that when hitters have less than 1000 vs LHP, we estimate their platoon skill to be closer to league average than to their observed platoon performance.

However, he seems to come back stronger with each TJ surgery.
If that were the case
He’d be throwing about 120 by now.
He pitched yesterday and Joe knows his arm is danling by a thread. I would have used him. I’d do it for Ely.
Torre said pregame that Kuo has been lobbying for more time, but he warmed up Sunday and pitched last night so he’s out tonight.

It's all right
Hopefully we can get some runs on the Boeing catalog they call their bullpen
It’s more than that. I’ve never thought Sherrill was a particularly good pitcher, but this is something else. He has just completely lost all command, even after gaining most of his velo back. He’s just imploded, which really isnt uncommon for mediocre relievers.
by UCLADodger32 on May 11, 2010 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions
This is why I mention his weight.
Seems he’s lost some velocity, perhaps?
by TopDeckTrueBlue on May 11, 2010 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions
A little bit, but not enough to make this much of a difference. He’s just throwing everything either over the heart of the plate or nowhere close to the zone. not a good combo.

but when you pull Bills too early yesterday, you end up with Ramon Ortiz in a situation like this one tonight.

Last Tuesday night i was shocked when I saw the score (10-0 in the 4th).
Tonight I was shocked again, but in a great way. Great stuff, Ely.
5 LA Dodgers have now pitched 6 innings in their first 3 games: Sutton, Alexander, Neidlinger, Astacio, and now Ely.

Well lets just say it was either a foul ball (Martin himself wasn’t sure it would stay fair) or a home run. There was no doubt it would not be in the ballpark. Glad I missed his call.

talking about Kemp’s flyout. Steiner called it a home run and was so sure about it i thought it was 20 rows back.
Maybe at a normal field. Steiner should know a ball hit to center needs to be about 430 to get out.
by UCLADodger32 on May 11, 2010 9:25 PM PDT up reply actions
Wow, talk about bad luck. Thats the best hes hit a ball in weeks. Im loving his 2 fly balls tonight. One to center, one to right, both crushed.

Ethier Double- Triple Crown!
I don’t know if I want to buy an Ethier Jersey or make my own ELY Jersey. I’d have to buy three vowels for Ethiers.
World Series Baseball for Sega Genesis
Piazza would regularly have so many homers that his total would reset. The actual total was something like 165 or something on the year in a season I played.
by StolenMonkey86 on May 11, 2010 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions
Ethier has been stupid good so far
It just scares me to think that, if he follows his typical career path, he’s due for about three months of total suckage to balance it all out.
I’m not hoping for it, just half expecting it.
Yes, but then Kemp picks it up.

Given our pen now has
Bellisario and Kuo back, plus closer Broxton, plus Troncoso, I’d say it’s not saying something. But if you look at the Dodgers at the start of the season, yeah, they were pretty bad. Either way, I feel a lot better about our pen after watching their trainwreck the last 2 nights.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
Things are looking up, but on a night like tonight when at least two of those are unavailable, it still gets pretty scary. I refer you to the 7th inning.
Yes that was a tad hairy I'll give you that
though I generally have faith in Weaver. Sherrill still scares me. But overall it’s a solid pen now. And gahhh… the DB’s pen is painful to watch.

Just caught up through the threads
and watching Gameday and lookins on MLB Network. Looks like it is a good day for the Boys, now if the snakes can score 1 more run I hit the 60 pointer on the sim game.
See if they didn't put Sherrill in earlier
the Dbacks might not have scored. We could have a Sherrill-proof lead.
its only tuesday. 2 innings of non stressful pitching isnt a problem.

but how long can he go is the point. If he pitches great, he can go forever, but that is a big if

Arizona
has too many throwers and not enough pitchers.
All we have to do is name Sherrill the emergency catcher
then we have to keep him on the bench just in case

On Ethier. . . .
when your OBP is .424 and in the next 7 days you raise it every time except for the day you face Ubaldo Jimenez, you might be pretty good at baseball.
I think Kemp is about to turn it on again. He’s had some really nice abs tonight withthe single, the two long flyouts and the walk.
Update for yesterday's poll
What’s the worst thing about LA? The way they whup up on the Arizona bullpen…

John Ely gets his first win of 2010
Juan Pierre gets his first extra base hit of 2010. A nice, even trade for both teams.
Getting Carroll, Ely, and a bag of cash for Frank and the White Sox getting Pierre
is like a win win win situation.
The more Frank skimps, the closer to world series victory we come . . .
Kershaw beats Jimenez, Ely beats Haren
I never lost faith in this team for a second. whistles as he walks away slowwwwwwly

Funny. Pierre kinda grabbed his leg and Hudson pushed him a little. Pierre in a fight would be pure comedy.
no joke
the most tense moment for me, outside of the Diamondbacks’ 3 run rally (remember that?), was the anticipation of watching Jamie Carroll get a hit, so we could see GA pinch hit for himself. I’m sure by Thursday, Jayson Stark will have some stat on the last time that happened.

Three good starts is not a guarantee of anything, but for a troubled rotation with only three real starters, it at least offers much needed promise.
