I’m fine with that as long as we emphasize the more runs part.

Is 1775 ABs significant enough to go against the book?

Kelly Johnson has a reverse platoon split over his career:
.299/.360/.474 vs. LHP
.251/.343/.430 vs. RHP

Does anyone who can do something check this crap?

by RawhideBlue on May 11, 2010 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess not because he only has 563 PA vs LHP
According to The Book, we regress lefties’ platoon skills against 1000 PA against LHP of league average splits for left-handed hitters… This means that when hitters have less than 1000 vs LHP, we estimate their platoon skill to be closer to league average than to their observed platoon performance.

Regression to the mean.

by prosellis on May 11, 2010 9:08 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s more than that. I’ve never thought Sherrill was a particularly good pitcher, but this is something else. He has just completely lost all command, even after gaining most of his velo back. He’s just imploded, which really isnt uncommon for mediocre relievers.

by UCLADodger32 on May 11, 2010 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions

A little bit, but not enough to make this much of a difference. He’s just throwing everything either over the heart of the plate or nowhere close to the zone. not a good combo.

If i were a dbacks fan, this bullpen would drive me to my death. They are comically bad.

by UCLADodger32 on May 11, 2010 9:30 PM PDT reply actions

And that’s saying something coming from a fan of the 2010 Dodgers.

by prosellis on May 11, 2010 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Given our pen now has

Bellisario and Kuo back, plus closer Broxton, plus Troncoso, I’d say it’s not saying something. But if you look at the Dodgers at the start of the season, yeah, they were pretty bad. Either way, I feel a lot better about our pen after watching their trainwreck the last 2 nights.

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

by underdog on May 11, 2010 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Things are looking up, but on a night like tonight when at least two of those are unavailable, it still gets pretty scary. I refer you to the 7th inning.

by prosellis on May 11, 2010 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes that was a tad hairy I'll give you that

though I generally have faith in Weaver. Sherrill still scares me. But overall it’s a solid pen now. And gahhh… the DB’s pen is painful to watch.

Yup. At least we have Brox and now Kuo and Beli are back. The dbacks pen has just piles upon piles of poo.

Just caught up through the threads

and watching Gameday and lookins on MLB Network. Looks like it is a good day for the Boys, now if the snakes can score 1 more run I hit the 60 pointer on the sim game.

by MammothDodger on May 11, 2010 9:32 PM PDT reply actions

The team is doing their scary OBP thing again.

by Alex41592 on May 11, 2010 9:32 PM PDT reply actions

That walk doesn’t just hurt, it really….stangs….

by aducker on May 11, 2010 9:33 PM PDT reply actions

See if they didn't put Sherrill in earlier

the Dbacks might not have scored. We could have a Sherrill-proof lead.

by StolenMonkey86 on May 11, 2010 9:34 PM PDT reply actions

This dude has no confidence he can throw a strike. Sad to see a major leaguer look like this.

by UCLADodger32 on May 11, 2010 9:34 PM PDT reply actions

Belli walk

oh well there goes th 60 [point possibliity

by MammothDodger on May 11, 2010 9:34 PM PDT reply actions

WHY THE FUCK IS TRONCOSO STILL THROWING???

by UCLADodger32 on May 11, 2010 9:35 PM PDT reply actions

It’s an eight run game. Monk can finish it for sure.

by Alex41592 on May 11, 2010 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Saving Monk

surely for Friday. May have to pitch with Ortiz and the rest of the pen

by keithc13 on May 11, 2010 9:38 PM PDT up reply actions

its only tuesday. 2 innings of non stressful pitching isnt a problem.

by UCLADodger32 on May 11, 2010 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree

maybe he is going to start Monk? I don’t have the answer, grasping like everyone else

by keithc13 on May 11, 2010 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Ortiz threw less than five pitches. I’d guess he’s still okay for a start on Friday.

by prosellis on May 11, 2010 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions

right

but how long can he go is the point. If he pitches great, he can go forever, but that is a big if

by keithc13 on May 11, 2010 9:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Four for Ortiz, two for Weaver, three for everybody else.

by prosellis on May 11, 2010 9:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Im cool with that

I am just hoping to get to the 4th or 5th with Ortiz starting. That would be golden

by keithc13 on May 11, 2010 9:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Wait a second

I didn’t say we’d be winning.

by prosellis on May 11, 2010 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions

we are going to be behind? I thought all that crap was behind us

by keithc13 on May 11, 2010 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions

On Ethier. . . .

when your OBP is .424 and in the next 7 days you raise it every time except for the day you face Ubaldo Jimenez, you might be pretty good at baseball.

Can we play the Diamondbacks more often?

by vadodger on May 11, 2010 9:49 PM PDT reply actions

by aducker on May 11, 2010 9:53 PM PDT reply actions

The good news for Arizona. . . . .

this is the last offensive half-inning for the Dodgers.

the bad news: there is a game tomorrow.

by K3vo on May 11, 2010 9:56 PM PDT reply actions

Isn’t it kind of bad form to send Ethier from first to home in the ninth with a nine run lead?

by prosellis on May 11, 2010 9:56 PM PDT reply actions

Is that another unwritten rule?

by RawhideBlue on May 11, 2010 9:57 PM PDT up reply actions

There are different thoughts about when to stop running and taking extra bases, but I would think that constitutes running up the score.

by Skunkburner on May 11, 2010 9:59 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

John Ely gets his first win of 2010

Juan Pierre gets his first extra base hit of 2010. A nice, even trade for both teams.

by sarcastro9 on May 11, 2010 10:01 PM PDT reply actions

Getting Carroll, Ely, and a bag of cash for Frank and the White Sox getting Pierre

is like a win win win situation.

The more Frank skimps, the closer to world series victory we come . . .

by RawhideBlue on May 11, 2010 10:05 PM PDT up reply actions

are you watching this, Lakers?

THIS is how you handle a team from Phoenix, AZ!

(Much like how the Dodgers showed the Lakers how to handle the Nuggets in the semi-finals with that 16-6 route of the Rockies last year.)

by sarcastro9 on May 11, 2010 10:03 PM PDT reply actions

I saw it on BBT

Funny. Pierre kinda grabbed his leg and Hudson pushed him a little. Pierre in a fight would be pure comedy.

no joke

the most tense moment for me, outside of the Diamondbacks’ 3 run rally (remember that?), was the anticipation of watching Jamie Carroll get a hit, so we could see GA pinch hit for himself. I’m sure by Thursday, Jayson Stark will have some stat on the last time that happened.

Dilbeck with the barely positive spin again on the Dodgers re: Ely. Geez.

Three good starts is not a guarantee of anything, but for a troubled rotation with only three real starters, it at least offers much needed promise.
