Phil Rogers in the Chicago Tribune: "What was Ken Williams thinking when he traded John Ely (and Jon Link) to get Juan Pierre?"
It seems to me that Pierre was what the White Sox could afford once the Dodgers agreed to pay $10.5 million of the $18.5 million left on the horrific five-year deal he received after his one unproductive season with the Cubs. But Williams would have been so much better off to just say no and figure out how to fill the leadoff spot elsewhere, even if he had to cross his fingers on Jordan Danks, who is hitting .250 with a .331 on-base percentage for Triple-A Charlotte. He definitely should have gotten off the telephone when Dodgers GM Ned Colletti mentioned Ely.
Arguably the best pitcher in the Southern League a year ago, Ely is a Homewood-Flossmoor High School product who grew up rooting for the White Sox. He's an easy guy to underestimate because he doesn't light up the radar gun, but he is in the process of seizing an unexpected opportunity with the Dodgers.

Good news/Bad news
Good news: Ned fleeced the White Sox
Bad news: This probably gets him another five years as GM
Heh. Indeed.
Though maybe when it comes time to re-up they could remember who signed Pierre to that ludicrous contract in the first place… But at least he did find a way to spin it into something useful.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

I’ve tried out about five analogies for this situation, but I’m not happy with any of them. It’s like buying _______, then getting credit for ______ it.
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!
Juan Pierre, the gift that keeps on giving.
Catcher Russell Martin says Ely pitches like he’s been around a while. The guess here is he will be around a long time, and White Sox fans will lament that Williams sacrificed him for Pierre.Rogers concludes with this nice little bit:
By the way, the pitcher who beat the Cubs last night was Ricky Nolasco, whom [Cubs GM Jim] Hendry traded to Florida to get Pierre.

It remains to be seen
if Ely will be calling Braves games 25 years from now.
