Xavier Paul Removed From AAA Game; To Replace Ethier?
Xavier Paul was removed for a pinch hitter in the third inning in the Albuquerque Isotopes' game in Salt Lake City, fueling speculation that he will be called up to replace Andre Ethier, who may have to be placed on the disabled list. For now though, nothing has been confirmed, and it's all just speculation.
In San Diego, Clayton Kershaw has been great, again. He has allowed one run through six innings, so far. 4-1 Dodgers, mid 7th...

See previous thread for a bit more details. Could just be minor but sounds like he’s out for a bit. Not on batting/throwing hand but still need it to swing. No details yet. Came during batting practice.

But by the same token, they wouldn’t need to pull Paul out of the game if they were going to call him up to replace Ethier.
Sure they would
if he’s coming up to the big club, they don’t want him risking getting hurt in a meaningless AAA game

Question?
What chance do the Dodgers have of getting Oswalt this season? Before you say “Zero” tell me why?
WHAMMY!
After July 31, Oswalt has a minimum of $23.2 million remaining on his contract

What, moved someplace where his bat actually plays, then spend another two seasons in the minors? Paul just ain’t a good enough hitter to be a starting left fielder, his upside is basically David DeJesus with a bit more speed.
That might play in CF, but not LF.
I’m not advocating that Paul get the job, I was just posing the question to the more informed fans out there.
By “DeWitt treatment,” I just meant that are the Dodgers going to not give him the job but not go and get anyone who is a better left fielder than him.
I think the general consensus (and of course things could change) is that
XPaul could make a very good 4th outfielder. Which isn’t an insult. I think he can be quite good as a role player. And I like him. But I don’t think he’s viewed as a potential everyday player for the Dodgers. (And again, I could still see him becoming a starter, but he needs to work on a few more things.)

so far, the Ethier injury
has a bit of the same feel as the Kershaw injury last year. (ie. A freak injury on the non-critical side during practice, day-to-day, etc.)
That’s silly.
Keep sending him out there, he’s having a great game.

If there had been pitch counts in the 60's
Koufax would have pitched until he was 38, rather than 30
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man
yet he wouldn’t have had the type of career he did because the pitch count would’ve been in the back of his head and the managers head.
so you are saying
an extra 8 years or so wouldn’t have padded his statistics? That’s crazy talk
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man
Sorry if I want Kershaw to be able to pitch after another decade from now
but in May we don’t need him going out there in the 8th (without a no hitter) with 110 pitches already. The best I could see happening is going out there with the “first base runner allowed I’m yanking you” routine.
actually they’ve found that it’s worse for younger pitchers to run pitch counts really high, for the same reason that you don’t have high school kids throw a steady diet of curveballs (see Nick Adenhart’s TJ surgery). And a game in May really doesn’t mean that much (see Steinbrenner’s complaining nickname of Dave Winfield as “Mr. May”).

well, the "good" news is
they all looked pretty silly there. Maybe the pitcher was just really good there!
Loney looked terrible there
Not as bad as the bases loaded at bat…but I’m not sure he could look much worse than that anyway
The whole side struck out so collectively I'm cutting the trio some slack
Plus he’s had a good series

There is zero reason for Kershaw to pushed into a CG tonight
except for people who have him on their fantasy teams. And fantasy baseball does not care about people’s arms.

or if you would like to see how he reacts on a little bit of stress before the post season. but if you’re one of those types that likes to see a young kid crumble under pressure again in the playoffs, that makes more sense
Because clayton has never pitched under pressure, right? What a a joke.
by UCLADodger32 on May 15, 2010 8:04 PM PDT up reply actions
physical stress or mental stress? There’s a bit of a difference.
by StolenMonkey86 on May 15, 2010 8:05 PM PDT up reply actions
Kershaw is more likely to "crumble" in the playoffs if he's pitched way too many innings
in the regular season. Given his age it wouldn’t be a psychological thing as much as an arm thing. This really isn’t the argument here.

Re: NC Dodger
How were guys able to pitch incredible amounts of innings year in and year out and still have long careers? Were they just not throwing as hard?
I think
the long careers were the exception, not the rule. For every Nolan Ryan, you had half a dozen J.R. Richards

I’m continually amazed when peopole say the way players were treated 40 years ago was better.
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man
If he's run out there for 150 pitches
He may be a St Paul Saint in five.
instead of going on pitch counts you keep in good shape, stretch correctly and go until you start to “feel it”. if you’ve pitched before, you know what that means.
so you are saying
players today don’t keep in shape and stretch correctly?
Cite examples please
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man
Ya, because relying on a pitcher when to tell you he is done is the best strategy. In high school I was in shape, had good mechanics, and was a decently recruited mid to high major prospect. I would never ask to come out of the game because i hated leaving the field and threw complete games almost every start. i was rewarded with a torn labrum that ended my career.

you have the trust the pitcher to trust himself, maybe that’s the situation with Kershaw. I’m not asking for every game to be a CG, but for the love of Walter O’Malley, 1 game on occasion wouldn’t kill him. Especially if he can keep it under 130-140 pitches
lol, pitch count matters to teams now a days – trying to justify it to Joe, I’m sure he’s going to read this thread after the game
You do realize that no pitcher in baseball has thrown 130 pitches year, correct? and you want out 22 year old phenom to throw 125 pitches in a meaningless game in May. That might be one of the single most idiotic statements I’ve read in a really long time.

The thing to think about is
pitchers still get hurt. If anything they still throw MORE pitches than they should on average, not less. Now you can take the attitude that they are expendable resources, but I like to think they are still human
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man
I'm willing to grant that you can go until you start to feel it
But you run into problems here:
1) Major league pitchers don’t want to be pulled from the game. Unless they’re on their way to the locker room to cry from pain or embarassment. They have little incentive to say they’re feeling tired.
2) Managers and pitching coaches can’t read minds, even if they look into the player’s eyes. If they leave it up to the player to say when to take him out (unless he’s not doing so well), then you’re risking more injury or poor performance.
You could argue also, that they should count certain types of pitches – is it the same wear to throw a spitter, a curveball, and a fastball? After all, don’t pitchers that throw a lot of curveballs seem to get injured more?
Each player will have a different body, sure. But pitch counts allow for some objective, albeit imperfect, way to determine how worn out a player is.
