Dodgers 6, Astros 2: Ely Mania is Alive and Well

Ely Mania is alive and well in Los Angeles, as the rookie pitched seven strong walkless innings to lead the Dodgers to their eighth straight win, 6-2 over the Astros.

I have reached the point of irrational exuberance regarding John Ely.  I don't care that he is a 24-year old who doesn't hit 90 on the gun, and who never started above Double A before this season.  The dude just throws strikes!  Ely has gone 84 batters without issuing a walk, or an extra-base hit.  In his last three starts, Ely has 21 strikeouts and no walks in 19 2/3 innings.

Since 1952, there have been two pitchers in baseball who pitched at least six innings without walking a batter three times in their first four career games:  Ross Grimsley, in 1971, and Ely.

Blake DeWitt added two triples, the 19th time an LA Dodger had two triples in a game.  The last Dodger to have two triples in a game was Rafael Furcal on June 13, 2007.

WP - John Ely (2-1):  7 IP, 5 hits, 2 runs, 0 walks, 8 strikeouts

LP - Wandy Rodriguez (2-5):  6 2/3 IP, 7 hits, 4 runs (1 earned), 2 walks, 1 strikeout

Me, too.

I wonder what will happen when he faces Carlos Ruiz, the object of my irrational hatred.

I predict cataclysm.

Is Sherrill back to his dominant form? Is Blake DeWitt the next Robbie Alomar? Was Weaver lights-out? Is Matty Kemp regaining his bodily fluids?

It’s funny how earlier today some people were complaining about Blake DeWitt so what does he do goes out and hits two triples. Hopefully this will shut up some people for a little while

I'm kind of with you there. Let's show a little patience with him. He's going to give us a good

OBP and good at bats just about every time he comes up. If his defense can improve a bit more at 2nd he’s a keeper.

hmm . . .

but major leaguers don’t “get” the triple, according to Joe Morgan.

I mean doubles and homers they get, but what is a triple?

Honest to god, I heard him utter those words about 14 yrs ago. Unbelievable.

I kid, I kid…but seriously, Ely’s arrival could not come at a better time!

by Dodgerfan.net Chris on May 17, 2010 9:55 PM PDT reply actions

It's tempting to be just a bit less greedy and say that a loss in the Ortiz game on Wednesday would be acceptable...

…but then I see we’re playing the Padres- and since we all surely agree that losing tomorrow is unacceptable (pitching matchup, inferior team, etc.), the streak must continue through Thursday, AT LEAST.

More! More! More wins, I say!

by sarcastro9 on May 17, 2010 10:02 PM PDT reply actions

Amazing

I thought Ely looked a bit gassed in the 6th, but he not only finished, he pitched the 7th too. Now, some of that was due to bullpen issues, but don’t you think Torre trusts this guy already? To quote Kathleen Edwards, “Good things come when you stop looking.”

by kinbote on May 17, 2010 10:02 PM PDT reply actions

Another idiot on the field at Petco btw

Giants announcers were going off about the Padres fans in the outfield and their stadium security for once again allowing an idiot fan to run on the field and disrupt the game. And I agree with them. Camera zoomed in on the section where he came from to show a bunch of idiots cheering him on, including a lady who looked like a proud mom as she took pictures of the fool. As they point out, they’re just disrupting their own team’s pitcher and rhythm.

Anyway, it didn’t matter as the Padres once again beat the Giants.

night all! Elymania!

IRRATIONAL EXUBERANCE

Has never felt so DAMN GOOD.

I kept telling everyone when no one else in the room, the answer is Ely.

Who would have though that a guy who was a throw in when cashing out Pierre’s contract would become Wolf Jr. and a serious contender for a patch for our gaping hole in starting pitching.

TOO RIGHT TO BE Exuberant!

by Cool Dudes on May 17, 2010 10:14 PM PDT reply actions

ELY

His peripherals continue to be amazing. He won’t pitch like this forever but I’m starting to think he will be a nice back of the rotation piece and that ain’t bad for Juan Pierre.

Ely had a .296 BABIP allowed entering this game, and I think tonight it was 5 for 17 (.294) against him

by JonWeisman on May 17, 2010 10:37 PM PDT reply actions

I was unsure

About how Ely would do. But being able to watch him pitch his last two starts, I can say I’m aboard. What comes up must come down. So I’m waiting for it. That way when it does arrive I won’t be too upset. But I hope he continues to pitch very well. So what’s the deal with Dre? Is he going to the DL? When’s Raffy coming back? Carroll is doing a bang up job at ss and batting 8th. Martin with his hit streak is sweet. Overall I feel the Doyers are playing great team baseball! The pitching has finally arrived. The O and D is playing great.
Random note: I saw a guy wearing a Dodgers shirt that I think was supposed to be funny it said “Los Dogers”. I think he wanted it to say “Doyers”. This was in DT Disney.

Given the fact that most of us, coming into this season

probably had him pegged for the type that’d post an ERA somewhere in the 4-4.5 range (assuming he made it at all), all this proves is thats certainly possible, with a much higher upside then most figured.

Not bad for an overpaid 4th outfielder thats not even OPSing .600.

Dewitts triples

I’m glad they were nice hits but I saw the reply and didn’t one pop out of the outfielders glove? The other would have been caught by a good outfielders. Again, good hits just lucky they were to that OF and not a gold glover.

by Dodgerblue8188 on May 17, 2010 11:19 PM PDT reply actions

You can blame the manager for those. DeWitt did a grate job of pulling the ball, but any outfielder playing straight up has those.

by prosellis on May 17, 2010 11:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Great game

Ely is really amazing the way he pounds the strike zone, and he’s not just grooving his pitches he is changing speeds effectively and nibbling both corners of the plate. He does remind me of a young(er) Steve Lyons with the floppy blond hair.

too many great ones to list (and that's Eric's job's anyway), but here are my favorites:
John Ely’s change is so nasty, it causes fellow pitchers to develop plantar fasciitis
The only reason Andre Ethier’s pinkie hasn’t healed yet is because he does not know John Ely
John Ely has heard of Andre Ethier
Janet Jackson actually made her album “Control” as a tribute to John Ely’s impending birth.

There are probably a few that are funnier, but these are specific to John Ely, as opposed to just telling really good Chuck Norris-style jokes.
