The K Rate is a bit shocking
he now has the same K/PA of 24% that he had in Rookie ball. Maybe he’s our AJ Happ this year.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
It has been years
since someone this far down the totem pole has saved the rotation. With a FIP of 1.70 he’s not doing it with mirrors either. Four pitch pitcher but not much difference between his FB (87MPH) and his slider (85 MPH) but he seems to have command of all his pitches. What a concept.

Unless you count Eric Milton last year:)

Closest comparable
that comes to mind might be Jose Lima. Unless you’re specifically referring to a prospect, in which case… nobody really comes to mind.
Yeah
I’m talking about a prospect. Coming into this year the candidates seemed to be in order:
Stults, Haeger, Elbert, McDonald, Lindblom and then Ely.
So Ely who was probably the fifth option has simply been stunning.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I'm shocked -- shocked! -- that Steve Dilbeck is still skeptical of Dodgers pitching turnaround
Dodgers pitching: Some serious progress, but remember who it’s come against
He makes a fair point about facing the Padres and Astros but he’s such an eeyore it’s still hard to not roll one’s eyes a bit.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
Anyone check out the Yankee lineup last night
It is not exactly murderous row anymore. With Nick Johnson sucking then getting hurt they have no legitimate DH. I’d like to throw three runs and under games against them.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I shamelessly stole your Eeyore reference for an otherwise uninteresting comment there.

Greg Maddux
in the last 30 years, Maddux has the longest streak of 6 IP, 0 walk games, with nine in 2001.
Maddux walked Charles Johnson in the second inning on June 20, then went 289 batters (and 73 innings) without issuing another walk. The walk(s) he issued on August 12 were intentional, so if you didn’t count those the streak extended to August 22, a total of 340 batters and 85 innings.
Amazing.
Devastating news
Ayala has opted out of his contract and been granted his release from Triple-A Albuquerque, the LA Times reports. The 32 year-old will likely sign a minor league deal elsewhere that gives him a batter chance to make it back to the big
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
But, but
who will Albuquerque use to blow 9th inning leads now?

Any number of candidates
Link seems best suited for blowing games but Leach can give him a run for his money.

The Dodgers have so many "big arms"
in the minors who can’t throw strikes. A guy comes in from outside the system and just throws strike after strike. Refreshing!
What are they saying in Chicago?
Ouch for League Leader San Dieo
Young (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on Monday and has been shut down indefinitely, the Padres’ official site reports. “We’ve shut down any further throwing activity for C.Y. for a couple more weeks,” said Padres manager Bud Black. “He’s working with our physical therapist with stabilization exercises in the shoulders and some strengthening, letting the entire capsule and joint quiet down. It got pretty heated up there over the course of coming back after his first start.” Black continued, “He’s still a few weeks away with a baseball in his hand. There’s some straining of certain muscles in the rotator cuff and in around the capsule, which is common for a lot of pitchers. With C.Y. it was a little more extensive so you need a little more time to let the strains and inflammation calm down.”

Mets might be close to bringing up old knuckleballer RA Dickey
That is your future Mr. Haeger

Anyone notice how Monasterious is now being used like a Rule V guy?
and given how easy it was to phantom DL Haeger, it would seem Carlos could easily come down with something.

Can you not add an external hard drive
by robotmadeofnails on May 18, 2010 10:13 AM PDT up reply actions
What you need is a Western Digital DVR Expander – works with both TiVo and Scientific Atlantic. The 1-Terabyte version expands the recording capacity by about 100-fold. Once I started recording in HD, the basic “80 hours” capacity on standard DVR reduced to 20 hours HD, or 3 5-hour baseball games plus room for a few other shows. No good. On my DVR Expander, I now still have 15 games from last year – which I’m resisting reducing to the top 5 or so for now – plus entire TV series, etc. Lots and lots of room. It’s great.
It looks like it runs about $110 brand new, but I think you could find any decent external hard drive and make it work. The key would be just know how to plug it in (usb or esata) to your DVR and to know the proper way to format it with your DVR. All of which should be in some forum for your model.

Good Info
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
by Phil Gurnee on May 18, 2010 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions
I think you’d have to be a genuine expert, if that. The cable companies (I’m sure satellite too) have engineered things so you can’t just add a hard drive – I think it will be blocked. With the WD drive, there’s some info – probably the file catalog/index, that remains on the original DVR. So you can’t just reomve the Expander and take it to another TV – or, more to the point, you can;t make copies that will work. It will only work in tandem with the DVR box through which you’ve made the recording. The cable companies – or rather their clients, the TV channels and their production companies – will not allow HD copies. Rights management has not been worked out for HD, meaning Blu-Ray. That’s why you can;t can’t record direct to Blu-Ray. This is the only way you can do it, legally. So to do it any other way, if it;‘s even possible, you’d hae to know how to get at the file catalog, etc. Much simpler just buying the WD and plugging it in. If you look around you can probab;y find it for $90 or so. It’s worth it.
Could I hook that up
copy everything from my current DVR, then replace my DVR with the newer model? I need to update my DVR but my wife has a penchant for continuing to record things so I can’t.

You can back up the hard drive from the original, but it would require another drive to mirror it to.
Here is the how to with Tivo on adding an external, but it would void the warranty. I love stuff like this:

My cable company (Cox) said No. When I last upgraded my DVR, I had to give up everything on the old one/I mean, you can copy everything not HD on there to regular DVDs, and just keep those and play them on any DVR, sure. But not anything you recorded in HD. If this DVR ever breaks, or I want to upgrade again, I’ll lose everything. But for the moment, that doesn’t seem necessary. Cox just upgraded their software last week – it’s much much better. It works with the same box I had, and everything recorded on the WD works too.
What DVR are you using? It is possible to copy shows from one tivo to another
by robotmadeofnails on May 18, 2010 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions
Thanks for the info
But Wow that seems like a lot of work. All new shows are ending now so not that necessary at the moment, but that may be something to look into for fall season.
Yea, it is some work, and the research needed would need to be thorough. This is why I need to work in IT…I love this stuff. Tivos make it possible to transfer, but I don’t know about other Cable company DVR’s. This is the beauty of my Home Theatre PC…I just pop in a new drive. But then again, I only have over the air channels :(
Plus Netflix :)

The mailer I get from buy.com
has external hard drives on it quite often. In fact, the one I got this morning has a 2 TB external for $150.
This Hanley incident is interesting to me. These types of incidents with the manager sometimes don’t go away. Here is their chance to bail on his contract.
I enjoyed Chad/Kensai’s post about that play this morning.
I saw news of it last night via Twitter on my phone but didn’t see video until this morning. Shocking.

It reminded me of Nick Van Exel
There was a classic story about his pre-draft workouts, specifically the one with George Karl in Seattle. During the interview, the first thing Nick the Quick said to Karl, after he learned Karl was a North Carolina guy, was that Dean Smith should have won more NCAA titles with all that talent.
Then, during workouts, NVE loafed the whole time. Heading into the final portion, Van Exel purposely slowed it up, turned to the coaches and said, “this one’s gonna be a cool down.”
I remember hearing an interview with Karl saying part of him was actually impressed with the balls of NVE, even though he was an a-hole.

we joke, but
can you imagine the national press reaction if Strasburg has 4 outings like this, particularly with the BB:K ratio that Ely has had?! Not only was there not a mention of him last night on the overnight show on the sports radio network that will remain nameless, but the team with the largest winning streak this season (and counting) was not mentioned once! I mean, at least ask a question about Mr. TC’s status, for crying out loud!
Only two mentions for the NL West at all, in fact: 1) that it was the weakest division in National League, win-loss record be damned, and 2) gosh, that Giant pitching sure would be tough in the playoffs!
Yeah, yeah, same old story, but still…
That be true
if any big time prospect did this, it would be the lead story for every game. I’m still at a loss for how good Ely as been.

On this board, at least. Not counting Phil Rogers.
by silverwidow on May 18, 2010 10:57 AM PDT up reply actions
speaking of Phil Rogers
I was checking out South Side Sox’s board, to see if there was any contempt for The Trade yet- particularly since Pierre’s having such a lousy year (yes, even by his standars). What little venom there is seems more directed towards Phil Rogers than Kenny Williams or Juan Pierre. Phil must be like their version of Plashke or something.
Another 2 or 3 starts even close to this, though, and I have a feeling that’s gonna change quickly! >:-)
To be fair, you were crazier over Link, and you are like this with just about every Dodger minor leaguer so far. If you predict 1,000 things 1 of them is bound to come true :P
Every Dodger minor leaguer? No.
I thought Link was an underrated relief prospect who would make a quick impact. Turns out his command is nowhere near ready for prime time. OK, I was wrong.
As far as Lindblom, I was pining for him to be in the bullpen since spring training, but the front office decided he was a starter. Bad decision on their part. He could still be an impact guy in 1 inning spurts.
With Ely, everyone was writing him off because of his 87 mph fastball. But I knew his command was good (of course, never expecting what we’re getting now) and he had the impact changeup to succeed at this level. So far so good.
So that’s three guys I went to bat for. I’m not going to mention our preseason #1 prospect because he wasn’t exactly under-the-radar. If I was wrong about Withrow, so were many others.
by silverwidow on May 18, 2010 11:33 AM PDT up reply actions
Butting in
It’s too early to say anybody’s “wrong” about Withrow. I remember when a full healthy season from Withrow & Martin were all Logan White wanted.
Just about every minor leaguer :P
I don’t think anyone can be wrong about Withrow yet, he’s 21 years old and struggling at AA…we shouldn’t have expected him to be in the majors by the end of this season, even if that would have been what all of us wanted. If you are off the Withrow bandwagon that sucks because he’s still a really good pitcher and good prospect, if not great.
This could get interesting
for posterity sake, so we can refer to this post later…
Ely’s first four starts:
25.2 IP
3 BB / 25 K
3.51 ERA
1.61 FIP
2.94 x-FIP
Could be close.
by Eric Stephen on May 18, 2010 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions
If Torre didn’t bring in Sherrill to face Kelly Johnson (who’s better vs LHP), Ely’s ERA very well could be 3.16
by silverwidow on May 18, 2010 10:18 AM PDT up reply actions
Yup. I mean, the ERA is the worst number on there. Stras might get more K/9, but I dot know if hell be able to trot out a 8-1 k:bb ratio or a sub 3 xfip.
