Padilla Not Expected Back Until June
Vicente Padilla, who last pitched April 22, is not expected back before June, according to manager Joe Torre. Padilla still hasn't been cleared to throw. "He's feeling better, but not having thrown for a while, I don't see him helping us this month," Torre said, "When you have a starter who hasn't pitched, there's a lot of work to do to get back on the mound at this level."
Other notes from Torre's pregame media session:
- Thursday's starter still hasn't been decided, but the decision will likely be made today. It could be John Ely or Carlos Monasterios, and Charlie Haeger hasn't yet been totally ruled out of the mix either.
- On James McDonald: "I'm not sure which way he'd best serve us, as a starter or reliever"
- Manny Ramirez will begin a rehabilitation assignment with Class A Inland Empire on Tuesday, in Lake Elsinore. His rehab assignment will be for "a couple of games," and he is expected to be activated Saturday, the first day he is eligible.
- Jeff Weaver will also be in Lake Elsinore Tuesday, starting the game on his rehab assignment, and will throw 40-45 pitches. Weaver will resume his situational relief role with the Dodgers upon being activated Friday
- Rafael Furcal is completely unavailable today, and there is a possibility he could be placed on the disabled list. "He was feeling better every day, but he sort of stalled yesterday. He didn't get worse, but just didn't continue to get better," said Torre. Furcal will work out Monday to determine his availability. Furcal last played on April 27, so if he is placed on the disabled list he would be ineligible to play until May 14 (the Dodgers are off on May 13)
- If Furcal is placed on the disabled list, Torre said the club won't likely carry 13 pitchers as it leaves a short bench. Chin-Lung Hu is the favorite to be called up to replace Furcal, over Nick Green, because Hu is already on the 40-man roster.

Thursday’s starter HAS to be Ely. He’s stretched out, obviously, and capable of 100+ pitches. Monk needs to stay in the pen.
Ely is the most likely
but Torre didn’t commit to or rule out anyone.
The Dodgers still have an open spot Saturday.

Dude falls behind everyone. Not only that, but his velo isn’t much better than Ely’s and his change isn’t in the same league.
huh?
4 innings 1 run…
he HIT 94 MPH yesterday on one pitch… elys max was 88.6
his change is actually really good and hes a GB pitch… yesterday 7-2 GO to FO
His fastball averaged 89-90 and he topped out at 92 (he threw 1 pitch over 91) according to pitch f/x. My big beef with him is that he doesnt generate swings and misses. Yesterday he had 3 swings and missed in over 70 pitches. Thats not so good, and its in line with the rest of his outings. He also falls behind in counts, which obviously leads to bad things. I just dont think he has the stuff to be a successful starter.

but he get GBs...
sinker!
he fells behind the count yes.. but it was his first start… its nerves… he will be better…
ely doesnt inspire any confidence in me…. especially his 87 mph fastball
Ely’s plus-plus change inspires me. He generated some incredibly late swings and misses on Wednesday. That’s the sign of a great secondary pitch.
No, he doesnt throw a sinker. His fastball has very little movement, and 4 innings isnt exactly an ample sample size.

Where have i said anything about Ely? Hes the lesser of two evils in my opinion, especially because he can throw starters innings. I dont understand what Monk has that inspires confidence. Stuff? No. Command? Nope. Prior success? No. At least Ely has shown he can be successful as a starter in the minors and can throw 115 pitches in an outing.

Haeger
Torre also said Haeger is OK to pitch out of the pen because he can get warmed up quicker than anyone on the staff, and can be used often. Also, he doesn’t mind being used in any role.
Torre said if Ely remains on the roster, it will be to start.
Maybe
He’s not scheduled to pitch until Tuesday for ABQ, which would make him unavailable for Saturday. Torre made a point of saying today that J-Mac is still working his way back from being hurt, so it might take a little bit, at least to bring him back to start.

Fifth starter, fifth schmarter
The words “Furcal” and disabled list" in the same sentence now make me flinch. I’ll worry more about who’s playing shortstop any day of the week. Has to bee Hu, but Jamey Carroll looks even more superfluous.

I'm throwing my hat in the ring for Ramon Ortiz
I don’t know why no one talks up Ramon Ortiz. Not just because he looked great last night, but he’s a starter and he threw nothing but strikes yesterday.
I like both Monk and RO in the starting rotation until Padilla comes back – if he comes back.
Not really
Ortiz had a great spring and never got a chance to start. I would give him a couple starts then, if nothing good happens, put him back in the bullpen.
I don't know who that masked man was who was wearing Ortiz's uniform last night
But really, I fear for Ramon. If anybody has any information on his whereabouts, please call the Ramon Ortiz hotline at 1-800-R-U-RAMON.
Until then, however, whoever it was pitched really well.
