Minor League Report May 20th - Songco hits the right notes
AAA –Isotopes lose 4 - 2 with Lucas May hitting his 3rd home run. Travis Schlichting pitched one inning of hit-less relief with two strikeouts. He's struck out five with no walks over the last four innings. DeJesus continues to suck in all aspect of hitting a baseball, going 0/4 and carrying a sterling .477 OPS in his last ten games. Must be working on a new way of swinging the bat.
AA - Jesus Castillo had been a bright spot for the Lookouts but he couldn't get past the second inning tonight as the last place Lookouts lose 6 - 4. Dee Gordon and his .315 OBP took the night off but that didn't help the offense any as his replacement also went 0 - 5. Trayvon Robinson passed Gordon and is now sporting a .311 OBP. Breakout season this is not. Scott Van Slyke had two singles but a .406 slug% for a corner outfielder is just not going to cut it. A sad sack of offensive production coming from the Lookout group.
High A – Last place 66er's lose 7 - 6 behind the poor pitching of Cody White. Kyle Russell hit his ninth home run but it was his only hit in five at bats. 3rd baseman Anthony Hatch who was demoted from AA last week collected three hits. Pedro Baez must be hurt again. Travis Denker had two hits and while it seems Denker has been around forever he's only 24. Good to see Travis playing and hitting for us again.
A – 20 year old Matthew Magill continues to shine with five scoreless innings, giving up three hits, two walks, and six strikeouts. Allen Webster did not fair as well walking four in his three innings. Mario Songco was the offensive star of the day with two doubles and a triple. Sandman hit another home run, his league leading 14th. He also had a single and walk. Sandman now has 27 XBH in 40 games.

looks like he likes to be a starter
Starting – 28IP 18H 4ER 6BB 32K
Relief – 9.1IP 11H 4ER 8BB 8K
I noticed that
don’t understand why they are tag teaming him but they know more then I do about what they are trying to accomplish.

Isn’t that just a trick to limit innings?

Is Sands for real?
What position is he playing mostly? They’ve got him listed in the OF and at 1b. Its kinda hard to not get excited. How much more does he have to do to get out of A ball. Chatanooga needs somebody or something, to get going. Maybe Sands could be that guy.
He's played mostly at 1B this year
but played mostly in RF previously.
His career breakdown:
RF: 71
1B: 49
CF: 25
LF: 5
DH: 2
At least going by one report, he’s supposed to have “enough range and athleticism to handle an outfield corner with an arm good enough for right” (http://www.ladodgertalk.com/2010/04/prospect-profile-jerry-sands/#comments)- so maybe they just moved him to 1B to make room for ‘09 2nd rd. pick Blake Smith who is a also a RF. Also, Russell (A+) & Van Slyke (AA) play RF, so’s there’s not a lot of room at the position for Sands to move up.
Mostly on this site
I’ve read varying reports on his future position. Some say he’s too athletic to waste at 1b; others say his frame suggests he’ll eventually wind up at 1b. As long as he’s hitting, I’m sure we’ll find a spot for him :)
We won't know if he's for real until
they test him at a higher level. I’m sure he will struggle, I’ll be curious to see how he adjusts. If Gordon can get moved from MWL to SL given his numbers, I don’t see why Sands can’t get the same treatment. Perez should not stand in his way. Let’s get him and give him those at bats.

My Take
He can hit. A bit concerned against AA breaking balls, just because of his tendencies to come up with his lower half after the ball. But there’s worse.
Underrated athletic ability, but he has a large frame and I think he can add more power/weight. Maybe first base is clearest path.

Baseball HQ Update on Kyle Russell
Kyle Russell (OF, LA)
The Dodgers’ Kyle Russell is one of the more difficult prospects to get a satisfactory read on. On the one hand, Russell has a nice package of power and speed and is currently hitting .333/.429/.592 with 10 doubles, 8 home runs, 4SB, and 31 RBI in 147. On the other hand, Russell’s 2010 performance is as a 23-year-old (he turns 24 in June) in the hitter-friendly CAL and his K rate remains alarmingly high (47K in 147 AB after whiffing 180 times in 481 AB in ’09. Russell does draw his share of walks, but his contact rate must improve for him to realize his potential.

Any reason why you say Baez is probably hurt?

thanks guys
didnt realize he was on the DL… wasnt sure if you were saying that his struggles at the plate could be explained by an injury you thought he had..
