Minor League Update 5-22-10 / Loons Double their pleasure

The Loons played two today and won both games 2 - 0. Talk about your dueces being wild.

AAA –The warm body of 34 year old Seth Etherton replaced Josh Towers in the rotation when Towers was released the other day, but the results were predictably the same as Etherton gave up 11 hits, and 5 Earned runs in 5 innings in a wild 11 - 10 victory for the Isotopes. The offense was led by the red hot Russ Mitchell who  is regaining some prospect luster since he's back to playing 3rd base. Mitchell collected two more hits giving him 20/43 in his last ten games and at least  a ten game hitting streak. Jamie Hoffman smacked a home run / double, and even threw in a walk. Hoffman has also hit in at least his last ten games and is now walking again collecting three in his last ten games.  Lucas May is banging out singles at a good clip but has yet to show the power that was a big part of his game. Last night he had two more singles giving him nine singles in his last six games.

AA -  26 year old Alberto Bastardo with his second straight dominating start going seven more scoreless innings. He's now tossed 14 straight scoreless innings giving up only five hits in the process while striking out fourteen and walking only two. Easily the two best back to back games by any pitcher in the system so far this year. The smallish LHP might be a better option then Seth Etherton but what the hell do I know. I'm sure there is a point to having guys like Etherton take innings in AAA but what it is will remain locked up in the mind of DeJon Watson. Dee Gordon hit a triple in four at bats while making his 12th error in 40 games. Just a lovely skill set. Gotta love it when your top position prospect is on a pace for 40 errors while also putting out an OPS below .700. But hey, he be fast, so dang, he must be special.  Trayvon Robinson hit a single in four at bats as he continues to search for that thing called an XBH.  Oh, there it is, a double, ten games ago. Good thing the transition to AA is going so well. Oh and for those Gordon apologists, just for the record the light hitting Ivan DeJesus tore this league to the tune of a .843 OPS at the same age playing the same position and no none even considered him a top prospect at the time. Maybe I simply expect to much of a top prospect, like the ability to get on base at good clip while in the minor leagues. Because last I looked a .322 OBP in AA does not translate very well to the major leagues. But hey it is only May 22nd so Gordon has plenty of time to turn my spittle to drool and make me look the fool.

High A –Meanwhile Kyle Russell got on base five times tonight with three hits, his league leading 10th home run, drove in five runs (Grand Slam), walked twice, and did not strike out once. WIth five home runs in his last five games, it is time for Russell to trade places with someone in that anemic AA outfield. Joining in the hit barrage was Travis Denker as he also collected three hits moving his average above .400. Denker hit his fourth home run and the 24 year old continues to mash as expected, but at least he's doing what is expected. Austin Gallagher had two hits for the second game in a row but come on, the dude is 6'5 and has one home run in the California League. How is that even possible? Is he taking lessons from 6'4 buddy Steven Caseras who has doubled Gallagher with his two home runs in 100 at bats. These giants hit like pitchers. Good thing we don't have a first baseman playing for the Loons who can hit home runs or they might find themselves on the bench.

A –Holy Shit, the Loons won two games 2 - 0 and Jerry Sands did not collect a hit in either game. Damn him, if he stops hitting what the hell will we write about. Maybe twenty one year old flame throwing Buddy De La Rosa who tossed two shutout innings in the second game collected the save with four strikeouts with no walks.  Elisaul Pimentel went the first five innings of the shutout striking out seven while walking five. He has now struck out 15 in his last ten innings. In the first game old timer West Hills born Will Savage dominated his seven inning complete game, giving up only four hits with no walks.
