The Birth of Two New Stars
As dramatic and incredible Ethier's slam was, we shouldn't forget that we were present at the birth of two new stars, Ely (who looked incredible, if a little jumpy and nervous) and Xavier Paul, who looks like a hitter and made a very good catch in the outfield.
I must admit that I was in favor of Monasterios (who some wag has christened Monk) getting the start, but Ely looked very good. He knows how to pitch and has more than one pitch---he doesn't just rare back and throw, like CK, with all his talent, does. And, with those great cheekbones of his, he looks a little like an anorexic Matthew McConnahay (sp), as Vin pointed out. That Vin never fails to amaze me---not so much because of his baseball acumen, but also because of his erudition. I mean, in talking about somebody's agent (whose name is Stringfellow), he said that the name would fit someone from a novel by Dickens. Exactly---Dickens often used names to suggest character (Pip, Miss Havisham, Estella, to name but three from Great Expectations). Sometimes they are too cutesy, but Vin was on it perfectly. As for Xavier, hey---the guy is a ball player and I think he'll be able to play well when Female Hormone moves on. We are in last place---why do I feel good?

Well, last night sure was fun to watch, no doubt about it… and I like watching them both… but
a) As great as he was last night, Ely was poor in his first start, allowing five runs. Maybe that was just jitters. I’m certainly willing to write it off and give him more chances, even without last night’s great performance, which only cements the idea that he should be kept on the roster…. but I don’t know if I’m ready to call him a star.
b) Xavier Paul isn’t even performing at star level. He had a good game — 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, not to mention that nice running catch he had — but that brought his OBP up to .296. It had been at .227. Look, there are a lot of reasons for that number to be low and I’m not trying to slam Paul — I like watching him play and he should play until Manny comes back — but the idea that we are witnessing a star in the making seems…….. premature.
On the other hand, while I’m certainly being a killjoy here, I get it. I’m as tired of the losses as anyone, and having two guys who are as easy to root for as Ely and Paul is a blessing.
