Just saw that in the 71st minute, South Africa holds a 1-0 lead over Mexico.  Maybe the power of being the host country will lead South Africa out of pool play after all....

As a Uruguay fan, for me

From everything I heard, it was any amazing match. Now to hunker down to work so I can watch Uruguay/France with my sons tonight.

Final South Africa 1 Mexico 1

Really bad result for Mexico. Making my prediction of Uruguay and France advancing look good.

by Michael White on Jun 11, 2010 8:57 AM PDT reply actions

Disappointed

Mexico looked flat, but I’m glad Marquez put in that goal. I’ll take a tie… Hoping the France-Uruguay team is a 1-0 loss by either.

I didn't watch the game

Mexico seemed to score rather quickly after going down 1-0. What happened?

by Michael White on Jun 11, 2010 9:07 AM PDT up reply actions

Mexico was very aggressive offensively in the first half, but couldn’t connect. S. Africa caught a break when the refs called offsides. Marquez scored for Mexico wide open on the ’79 minute. S. Africa failed on a breakaway, and the game ended tied.

by Julio Nievas on Jun 11, 2010 11:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Mex had a goal taken away on the worst offsides call ever early. There may have been a handball when ball came over the top that the announcers have not mentioned

SA scored

Mex scored about 15 minutes later

SA hit the post from close range at 88 min

game over

by delias man on Jun 11, 2010 9:12 AM PDT reply actions

I saw some people whining about a non-call that would have gone in RSA’s favor.

Penarol will be pleased that I'll be rooting for Uruguay vs France Today

No one get headbutted por favor!

I agree delias, it was a bizarre offsides call. There was a SA player standing on the goal line behind the Mexico player, how can it be offsides? Still, a tie was about right for that one. Mexico dominated 1st half (from what I saw, missed part of it while waking up), SA 2nd half, and they nearly scored at the very end.

Host countries almost also win or tie their first game, even if they’re an underdog (like today, or at least normally they would have been), with all the momentum, excitement, crowd support…

i didn't see the play

but if memory serves, the rule is that the offense can’t pass a ball to a defensive player if they player is behind 10 other players. So…. if goalie is at top of penalty box and defender is on goal line, if there is a player between the two who receives a pass, it is still off side.

No

That’s wrong. The rule is:

“A player is in an offside position if he is in his opponents’ half of the field and is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the next to last opponent.”

Gotta have 2 people behind you, usually the Keeper is an afterthought in this rule, good application of the law by the Assistant. If you are interested Offsides is Law 11 in the FIFA rulebook. Outlined here:

Germany will win in 2014

they may be a bit young, and I think the teams that can run them off the ball will also be able to exploit a defense that looked shaky at times against the socceroos, but with 4 years of maturity, look out for these guys. Most impressive side so far albeit against a team playing poorly in their run-up.

Mini recap of day 4...

Game 1: Algeria and Slovenia played so bad today…
Maybe the ugliest match of this WC…
How Slovenia and Algeria were able to qualify by playing so badly??
Another big error by the Algerian’s goalkeeper (maybe Manny would catch that ball!!!!!) and a stupid red card by Ghezzal…

Game 2: An intense match at the physical level, the Serbs have shown despite a plethora of technical players (Stankovic, Krasic, Kuzmanovic …)
Another stupid red card by Kuzmanovic and a penalty scored by Gyan…
Ghana dominated the debate thanks to a greater physical presence in Serbian…

Game 3: Probably the best match of this first round
Germany was impressed me thnaks to his outstanding offense… With their young talent led by Ozil, Muller, Neuer, Lahm, Badstuber, Gomez, Marin, etc… they could win this year… My only issue is the central back because Australia is not strong as Ghana or Serbia… But Germany is the only favorite who played as their level…
What I liked about the Germans is their variety in their attacks, the danger can come from anywhere and even Khedira is able to bring it, we see the whole mentality of the game Joachim Low for two years, I hope that his work will be recognized by all …
It should be that France and Raymond Domenech is inspired because it is not a style of play that wins chilly face Mexican …
Then I sends a message to Mr. Domenech: Please, do dream of all France, make out that the Blues play like the Germans or the Netherlands or Spain or even the U.S. …

Tomorrow, it’s Group E with my favorite team: The Netherlands…

I’ll predict a 4-0 win against Denmark

Colony Capital sucks... Paris est magique...

by Jojo93160 on Jun 13, 2010 3:29 PM PDT reply actions

Are Denmark that bad?

I haven’t followed them at all lately, I was actually hoping that it would be a good match. Germany are really only impressive side yet, the technical skill and strength they showed at positions was really amazing. Argentina looked fairly good, but has some holes in their lineup that can hurt them down the road, no other side is worth mention yet. It’s a shame that so many of the stronger teams are going to be playing during the week while I’m at work.

by Penarol1916 on Jun 13, 2010 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Isn't Slovenia's style sloppy?

From what I’ve read, they just load up on D and then try to steal a goal or two. They are perfectly content to play for a draw. That style is probably how they advanced out of Europe.

That’s why it was so huge for the U.S to tie the UK because I could see another sloppy match with Slovenia which ends in a draw.

by Michael White on Jun 14, 2010 8:00 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm not saying Denmark is a bad team...

But with the plethora of good Netherlands offensive players (Kuyt, Robben, Sniejder, Van der Vaart, Van Persie, Huntelaar, Elia…), they can score a lot of goals…

And Demnark has one or two good young players like Bentdner (Striker), Kjaer (Central Back), Poulsen ans Sorensen (GK)…

Colony Capital sucks... Paris est magique...

by Jojo93160 on Jun 13, 2010 3:54 PM PDT reply actions

Robben is out for the first game.

I do agree with you that the Dutch should win easily. I’m not sure that they have put themselves in the conversation as cup favorites just yet, the question marks on defense are pretty big. The will be able to outpossess opponents in the group stage with a stacked midfield and make it into the knockout round easily. from there anything can happen, but i don’t have them going farther than the quarters. I hope I’m wrong though, I’ve always liked the Dutch =)

by K3vo on Jun 13, 2010 4:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I do agree about the defense...

It was always been a issue for them since the 80’s when they have one of the best central back by the name of Ronald Koeman…

But Van Marjwik has been able to keep the defense alive…

Hmmm.

Interesting first half, Paraguay is a mystery to me they play out of their minds in qualifying against teams like Brazil and Argentina and lose to Bolivia and Colombia. Great goal off a set piece puts them in the driver’s seat against an Italian side I’m not so sure is built to come back.

by K3vo on Jun 14, 2010 12:21 PM PDT reply actions

K3vo

Playing at home makes a lot of difference in the south american qualifying. It´s really tough to play in Bolivia, for example, because of the altitude. But Paraguay has a good team, the best since 1998. The difference now is that, while they don´t have Gamarra, they have plenty offense.

But Italy is looking good. Cannavaro failed in the goal, but other than that is playing like in 2006 and if Montolivo and Marchisio step up, the italian will win it.

by ricardodgers on Jun 14, 2010 12:35 PM PDT reply actions

Points taken, I think what i was getting at is that Paraguay is the type of side that on any given day can force favorable decisions out of the top teams in the world, but you also get the feeling that they could just as easily fall out of the tournament after the group stage.

As for Italy, i get the feeling that they lack a serious creative presence, their strategy has been to fire the ball into the box and hope for a favorable outcome. That said, their defense in the first 20 minutes or so of the match was very impressive. Hopefully the Buffon injury isn’t very serious, they could be a dangerous team to face once they advance out of a pretty weak group.

under Dunga the Brazilian side has adopted a more structured game that centers around tough defense. They no longer play the free-flowing style that coned the term ‘beautiful game’. That said, they dominated the game and should have had more to show for it than a 2-1 result. Teams having a real problem finding the net. Give DPRK a little credit though, maybe they won’t be the 3-point vending machine everyone thought they would be. Hopefully put a little doubt in the Portugese and the Ivorians.

I'm all about cheering for the underdog

except when it’s Team Kim Jong Il. That being said I was really impressed with DPRK as well, they played tough the whole game and made it frustrating for Brazil. I don’t ever like saying this because you really never know how a team approaches another team, but I really think Brazil thought nothing of DPRK and severely underestimated them. 5 men in the box on attack in the 90th minute with a 2-1 lead? that seemed a little ridiculous to me.

i agree, there is definitely a little less samba with this team.

Yes, Spain dominated but the swiss defend well. They´re more than 8 hours without giving up a goal in World Cup.

That match reminded Barcelona vs Internazionale. The spanish side has the ball possession but coludn´t penetrate the defence.

I didn´t see the game, cause I have a test today and I was studying. But I saw some highlights and Chile was the clearly the better side.

Chile vs Spain will be interesting to see what “El Loco” Bielsa is gonna do, because he knows the spanish are going to attack, on the other hand his team´s main strength is the offense. It´ll be really entertaining, I´m expecting lots of goals.

PS: I´m kinda afraid that we may face “La Furia” on the 16th round.

The games today have been real corkers. Middle one was terrific

Spain seemed to have many chances but couldn’t put it in, and Swiss defense was very solid when it had to be. They deserved to win. Spain will still win their next two games, I predict, but they better wake up.

Game on right now is off to an exciting start as well.

The acting by the Greek player is what drew the red card. I know flopping is tolerated but no Nigeria should have been down to 10 men if the ref acted sensibly.

but if the Nigerian didn’t kick the Greek player while he was out of bounds, nothing happens and the referee doesn’t have to make a decision. Players do this constantly in soccer, flopping I mean. It is part of the game.

Seriously...

Seriously, this is the most pathetic game I’ve ever seen since the Euro 2008 … We got dominated from start to finish by a great Mexican team that we were superior to them …
Frankly, if France is eliminated what will be the result of four years of incompetence … First, after the Euro 2008 the Federation Francaise de Football has kept Domenech so pitifully that got eliminated by the Italians … And all of France remembers this sentence right after the match: “Stella, will you marry me ?”… You do not think he’s laughing at the mouth of french … Imagine Kemp Torre or saying the same thing after a defeat in the World Series, how you would react?

So after this terrible Euro 2008, the Blues have struggled to qualify for the World Cup, most of the game proposed by them is more than suspect … Domenech has never been able to unite his players around him, more internal problems have increased with the case of the hand of Henry, the case Zahia / Ribery Gourcuff and the case does not deserve anything lynching from his teammates …

This World Cup 2010 has reinforced all the evils that this rotten team … A catastrophic level of play, players who do not fight on the field, a coach who made dubious choices and more I did not feel concerned by this defeat, he was impassive tonight … Too many players overpaid for doing nothing …

So I say, I repeat, I am ashamed to be french, that’s the image they give us around the world, posing as clowns, the world laughs at us …

I hope that after this World Cup disaster, significant changes will be made, including the coach because France is tired of a clown who is more talented than the theater on a bench … Then, at the French Football Federation, which must absolutely get rid of the President who has kept Domenech … In the end, it would make a great revolution in French soccer…

by Michael White on Jun 17, 2010 2:44 PM PDT up reply actions

After the WC 2006...

But what most people do not realize is that the Blues came in the final thanks to the combined return of Zidane, Makelele and Thuram because before the 2006 World Cup, they have been very difficult at the beginning of qualifying.
Therefore Domenech asked Zidane back for France to help them qualify for the 2006 World Cup, Zidane accepted that request provided that Thuram and Makelele return also Domenech also have left them the keys to finding a tactical scheme Zidane that would suit …
Riding the wave of these returns, France is simply once more the team that scared the world in 2006 …
After the final Zidane, Thuram, Makelele and Barthez took their international retirement to make room for the next generation should be taken by Benzema, Ribéry, Nasri … and assisted by the experienced Gallas and Henry …
The qualifcations for Euro 2008 will go smoothly, so all the french begin to believe in the miracle of 2006 unless Quil lack Zidane, Thuram and Makelele in the role of team leader …
Normally Henry and Gallas had to play that role here except that they have never been able to appropriate …

The Euro 2008 also brings up tensions internally between Ribéry, Benzema and Nasri, leaden hue which the group atmosphere and in the same time the level of the game that was more than 2006 …
Therefore, the french played 1 round as a soul in torment, a game indigestible, a team disunited, weak mentally … And ultimately, a disastrous game against the Italians which we refer to the house …

The rest, you know as I explained in my previous posts …

I think there is a generational problem in this team … I hope the new coach will be able to straighten all this …

I think the point of frustration for me was the seven or eight different times a winger broke down the defence and got into a position to cross, only to find 1 teammate in the box, with 3 or so others standing around the 18. Either center it to those at the top of the box, or crash the area, super disjointed play and no opportunities created.

Sorry jojo! Yeah, you basically nailed everything that went wrong with the French

side these past 2 years. The coach was truly horrible and everyone knows it. Sports Illustrated rightly said he looks like Inspector Clouseau but was even more clueless managing them. They have some genuine talent on that team, which is what makes it more a shame that they coudn’t find chemistry or play all the right players. Sometimes teams just don’t gel but it doesn’t help when leadership is incompetent. We all know France can play great football so hopefully with the mgr retiring maybe they’ll get their act together.

In a way maybe they needed to be embarrassed like this to realize how much they need to change the culture. Get ’em next time!

It's going to be tough

With Uruguay most likely playing 11 men behind the ball, I doubt that they have more than one player in the final third of the field all game. A tie will clinch them first place in the group. This should be Uruguay’s ugliest game since the 1990 World Cup.

HUGE game for the US tomorrow. I truly hope they don't do another el foldo after a strong game

This time I think will be different, Landon Donovan’s quotes about that make me feel less worried, and they are talented but still, I will worry about it until they win.

Slovenia and Algeria didn’t show anything that worried me when they played each other. The Yanks should beat them, and if they don’t, well as Donovan said, then they probably don’t deserve to advance.

Why would USA need a win more than Slovenia?

USA got the draw from the top seeded team (England) while Slovenia did it against the weakest team— the team the US still has to play.

A draw favors US’s chances of advancing, not Slovenia.

Hey Guys!!!!!

I watched the game from the USA with great passion, tension … And what a game the Americans, I was amazed by their mental power, they never even dropped to 2-0 while the Slovenians dominated the game …
The choice proved pay Bradley in the second half … We found a good kick on Donovan stopped and I especially loved the entry Edu who stabilized the midfield … And what about that Altidore harassed Slovenian defense from start to end by his stall and his incessant gambling hub …
Unfortunately while Malian referee messed because the third goal was absolutely valid, I did not understand his decision, especially since it was not the first time he had a questionable decision against the U.S. .. .
But I have one thing to say, you can be proud of a team that fights to the end, which is never abdicates some circumstances, we really feel that Americans move up in years years and that are no longer tenure as in the past …
Some team should draw inspiration from France because they have lost all sense of fighting spirit, sacrifice, they play only for themselves, not even for their country …

At least I tell myself that Americans can be proud to have a team dedicated body and soul to them …

Congratulations and let me dream again, I hope you beat the Algerian and you will go to the 2nd round because you deserve it, not like the team of France …

Gooch is normally pretty solid and made some great plays vs England but

he’s coming back from injury and there were worries he wouldn’t be game fit in time for Cup. Today he looked not game fit, he was not as solid as he can be (though he was better in 2nd half). Both Edu and Feilhaber are more versatile and can play back if needed so I like having at least one of them in the next game.

the US needs to beat Algeria next game and England needs to beat Slovenia to keep it simple and the US is in like that. I found the full rules...

The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:

    a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
    b) goal difference in all group matches;
    c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.

If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:
    d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
    e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
    f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
    g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

I agree that it was a bad call

But trying to rationalize/figure out what the ref was thinking…

1) Most of the hugs by the Slovenians, the Americans are either pushing (making it fouls both ways) or not really trying (and therefore not being obsructed).
2) Bradley was in an ~offside position (though this isn’t what was called), I guess negating his hug.
3) In this video, you can see the ref’s angle, with a bit of contact between Edu and the Slovenian at about 0:46-47, apparently making the Slovenian slow up and not able to reach the ball.

Netherlands vs Japan

Robben was out of the lineup again due to his injury, it was very similar as the 1st match they did… They struggled to find Van Persie and Kuyt… Sometimes, Sneijder took the ball on ths own side as a defensive midfielder… Van Der Vaart is not good as the left midfielder… But the defense has been good and the subs are really good…
A good goal by Sneijder and yhe japanese GK helped him…
Japan surprised me again thanks to his great discipline and a great tactic by their coach… Honda is a really good and underrated player… I hope they will advance to the 2nd round… But their GK is the weakest link of the team…

Ghana vs Australia

A very interesting match because Australia was needed a win to stay alive on this pool and Ghana was needed a win to advance in the 2nd round…
The 1st half was dominated by the Socceros and the goal froml Holman was the result of that… But a decision would change everything in this match, Ayew made a cross to Jonathan and he shoots for the goal but the injured Kewell stopped the ball with his arm… So the referee made the right decision with the penalty but the red car was not fair for Kewell… Consenquently Gyan scored his 2nd penalty in 2 matches…

yet it is the Australians who are the most menacing front of the goal of Kingson, Kennedy and his teammates have several opportunities in the second half … Ghanaians have lost their composure by accumulating errors of concentration that could have cost them dear as they played on the powerplay for 60 minutes … How to explain this stress has seized them?? Difficult to say because they seemed to finish the first half on a very good basis but the coaching of the Veerbeck has surely interfere … But the Ghanaians are in favor of waivers for the 2nd round qualification

Mini-recap 06/19 Cameroon vs Denmark

This is a game which I enjoyed watching as these two teams were obliged to win to hope in this world cup … Le Guen has changed tactics which has led the offensive while the Danes have done this by-cons attack thanks to Rommedhal and Bendtner …
The Indomitable Lions were quickly opened the scoring thanks to the inévatible Eto’o enjoys a back pass from one of its partners … But the Danes have never abdicated and Bendtner equalized quickly on a share of a school Rommedhal perfect service, however the Cameroonian goalkeeper is not blameless in this but …

The second half was a carbon copy of the first, ie a Cameroon team that was moving very offensive opportunities but without success, including Eto’o … And came the cold realism of the Danes that they planted a knife in your back through which mystified Rommedhal Assou Ekoto, and scored with a shot crossed the goal in Cameroon …

Paul Le Guen’s men may bite fingers have missed many opportunities to drive the point home, including Eto’o hit the post in the 43th minute, Webo (58th, 61st), Makoun, Mbia, Emana, Idrissou … What a shame for a team so attractive on paper but ineffective for the 2nd qualifying round …

This pitiful elimination is the result of many months of hesitation under the leadership of Paul Le Guen confirmed that any incompetence lead to a club or a selection from France … I pity the Cameroonian to have stuck with a breeder with a charisma of octopus and has no credibility to them … I hope that the Indomitable Lions will leave on other bases after the World Cup …
It is officially eliminated, much to the despair of fans Cameroonian and African … Now it will take on Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana to see an African team to shine this year …

Jojo,

I just wanted to say thanks for all the amazing effort you have put into your analysis and recaps of several games and groupings of the World Cup. I rarely, if ever, watch soccer and even though my interest in the sport is minimal, your comments and fan posts have been incredibly informative and have helped not only me, but our readers as well.

Thanks.

My pleasure Eric!!!!

You and the staff made the same thing with the Dodgers… That’s why I love the Dodgers and their fans… I don’t need to go on the Dodger website… TBLA is my favorite Dodger blog for so many reasons…

Thanks Eric, your staff and TBLA readers for your incredible work all day…

I am very surprised and very touched by his compliments because I do not think my analysis would have an equally positive response from you and readers of this blog …
In any case, it makes me want to continue to analyze all the matches of this World Cup because I want to share my passion for soccer and open to everyone with my analysis … And it’s interesting to exchange opinions on soccer because I feel that many of you want it more than before …

LOL Italy

Go Kiwis!

(I actually watched one of the NZ players play in college at UCSB. They’re npt as bad as people made them out to be.) But Italy sure better wake up…

You'd think

Italy would do WAY better at the Summer Olympics with all these great divers.

Italy is playing horribly

New Zealand is who we thought they were. They have never won a game in a major World Competition. Never!

Yeah and even if the first goal look offsides to me (maybe borderline) Italy's goal came

after a flop in the penalty box. So tied was about right. Italy really did nothing with their chances today.

Poor Ivory Coast.

I dunno about that. Solid defense, but two of the goals were gifts of a very porous CIV defense. Another was a gift of the official.

I’m not convinced any team has really separated themselves from the crowd yet.

Fair enough. The US scored 2 against them last year before ten falling apart in the 2nd half. No one is unbeatable.

(As that Confed. Cup proved.) None of the so called Superpowers look invulnerable. The US has to win their damned game on Wednesday but if they do I could see them being as dangerous as anyone, frankly. (IF they shore up their defensive issues in the early going.)

Mini recap 06/20

Slovakia 0-2 Paraguay

In this game already for determining qualification for the next round, the Paraguayans have decided to go a very offensive team with the “Argentine” naturalized as Barrios …
The Paraguayans start the match off the floor with ball possession in their favor and that increased opportunities to the opening goal of the latter by Vera (26th minute) with a shot from the left uncrossed just die in the ventilator Mucha and served by the inevitable Barrios …
They have also mastered the corridors, preventing Slovak develop their offensive, including the image of a Bonet in great shape …
A timid response of the Slovak second half did not affect the dominance of the outrageous Albijora which will have to wait the 86th minute to finally get away by typing a new Riveros uncrossed his left into the side netting Mucha …
The score could have been much higher if they had missed their numerous occasions, including Santa Cruz, Barrios and Valdez …
But much has been done and they can wait calmly New Zealand for a match which must confirm their first place of this group …

Italy 1-1 New Zeland

Certainly the 2010 World Cup gives trouble to leading European teams, Italy is no exception to the rule …
Even facing the weakest team of the group and the competition, the Azzuri were nonexistent offensively, especially since their Lippi has warned of the trap that the All Whites tended, while many of them provided a easy victory at the 78th in FIFA rankings …
The All Whites have played with their weapons, that is to say the physical battle in midfield which considerably General Italians …
This pattern of play has borne fruit in the 7th minute when Smeltz resumed successfully a free kick from Elliot, fear then took hold of the Azzurri who puffed the absence of Buffon …
But this does not count on their strength of character they manage to return to the party thanks to a penalty converted by Iaquinta (29th) …
But the mental strength does not beat a team ranked poorly, the Azzurri have had a terrible time around the block strong team for the All Whites who have never really suffered …
This game has also found deficiencies in both tactical and technical, a lack of speed on the wings and finish again …
In short, Marcelo Lippi still has work to do in order to retain their trophy and the last game against the Slovak part is not fun …

Brazil 3-1 Ivory Coast

They were waiting for the turn after selecção first game winded meet North Korean … The response was scathing and flashy …
Yet the first half was not great quality, not bad approximations of the two technical teams … There are a few flashes of Robinho but without success until this superb collective action taken by Robinho, Kaka and Luis Fabiano to the conclusion (24th) …
Opening the scoring was freed auriverde who have proven their efficiency thanks to a Luis Fabiano of great nights, silent for 10 months in selection, FC Sevilla signs lined with a fine individual action, even if it contains two non-hands whistled by referee Mr Lannoy (50th, yet the french !!!!!!!)…
Kaka has finally delivered a performance worthy of its status as part of auriverde with two assists including one on the 3rd goal for Elano (63), but its good game suffers from an unjustified expulsion late in the game on a nudge more spectacular than wicked sent Keita (they are zero referees French) …
For the record, Drogba saved the honor of Elephants in the end game of a head …

Dunga’s Brazil is the second team qualified for the next round, as it will count on them even if the game is not flamboyant far, at least efficiency is …

PS: I guess many of you have followed the adventures of France for a few days, I would speak on Tuesday after the match against South Africa because the France team disgusts me …

One question, one suggestion

The suggestion first. Can we have a new open thread each day? It’s very hard to find this thread on mobile.

The question now. Am I reading right? Did Portugal drop seven goals on North Korea? Good gosh amighty.

If Chile does not win this game today

I’m going to be very sad. I love watching them, plus I’m scared that Switzerland are going to pull a Greece in this tournament.

Chile leaves a bad taste in my mouth today since they are getting an assist from that cheap Red. Although I do like Gary Medel.

The Swiss

have now gone more than 6 games (over 550 minutes) since conceding a goal. Pretty impressive. Good game between SUI and Chile. Got a little chippy around the 60th minute.
