Ely, Kazmir Provide A Contrast In Styles

Photo

There have been 131 pitchers that have thrown 50 innings or more this season, and tonight's starting pitchers are at opposite ends of the spectrum in walks per nine innings.  John Ely has the 10th fewest walks per nine innings, at 1.76, while Kazmir ranks 121st, at 4.38.  So far this season, Ely has also struck out batters more often than Kazmir:

Pitcher IP BB/9 K/9
Ely 51.0 1.76 6.88
Kazmir    61.2 4.38 5.98

Ely is coming off his shortest start, allowing four runs in five innings against the Braves last Sunday.  He is pitching today on five days rest, the third time this season he has had extra rest.  In the previous two starts with extra rest, Ely pitched very well, allowing one run in 6 2/3 innings to Milwaukee and allowing two runs in seven innings to Houston.  Ely did not walk a batter in either of those starts, two of three times he has done that so far.

Kazmir is coming off perhaps his best start of the season, allowing one run in 6 1/3 innings at Oakland.  He has won both starts this month, allowing one run in each game.

Bullpen Dominance

Here are the numbers for Jonathan Broxton and Hong-Chih Kuo since Kuo was activated from the disabled list last July 27:

Reliever IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP BA/OBP/SLG OPS
Broxton 58.2 45 14 11 3 13 83 1.69 0.989 .208/.255/.278 .533
Kuo 41.2 23 8 8 1 13 49 1.73 0.864 .160/.228/.236 .464
Totals 100.1 68 22 19 4 26 132 1.70 0.937 .189/.244/.261 .505

kinda glad I wasn't around for that last night

did not seem fun.

They showed Scioscia as a Dodger catcher

on the ultratron last night. A coupla pictures actually

Look at that, he hit the f*cking bull! Guy gets a free steak!

I’m on board with the name “ultratron.”

by Eric Stephen on Jun 12, 2010 4:48 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I use it ironically

They’ve got like a giant HD TV in Big Phone San Francisco Park, while we’ve got an old school SD big screen. Remember how back in the day (the 90s) there was that big screen tv wave, but the picture quality didn’t improve just the size, so it helped fill a big room but little else?

What was I talking about? Oh yeah, it could be worse though, the Oakland Coliseum has the equivalent of a crappy motel TV with bunny ears.

Look at that, he hit the f*cking bull! Guy gets a free steak!

Manny sits; Carroll at 2B vs LHP

RT @DodgertownUSA: #Dodgers lineup: Furcal 6 Martin 2 Ethier 9 Kemp 8 Loney 3 Blake 5 Johnson 7 Carroll 4 Ely 1 #ThinkCure

Ahh, this lineup is extra gritty.

Manny hasn't had much success against Kazmir

Manny vs. Kazmir

.159/.260/.273/.533

7 for 44 1 HR 14 K’s 4 BB’s

Reed Johnson vs. Kazmir

.265/.265/.471/.735

9 for 34 1 HR 10 K’s Zero BB’s

Not much better but that’s what it is.

Reed can run fast, big plus on outfield defense
Manny not so much

Dodgers should deal for Paul Konerko...

He’s having the best season of his career – and he’s in the final year of his contract.
So you offer him arbitration, and if he doesnt take it then you’ve set yourself up for at least 3 1st round picks in the 2011 draft (since Lee isnt signing).

Konerko for Loney & Ethan Martin.

If the Dodgers truely want to ‘win now’…and know this is Manny’s final year. This is what I think they should do.

by Joey Joe on Jun 12, 2010 4:03 PM PDT reply actions

Konerko's current line -.287/.392/.608.....34ks/34bbs

He’s always been a pretty good player, but he’s completely locked in this year. Probably due to his free agency status.

by Joey Joe on Jun 12, 2010 4:06 PM PDT up reply actions

wouldn't that leave us

without a left fielder and a first baseman if they neither of the re-sign?

by Tommy Blackjack on Jun 12, 2010 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Manny's gone regardless and Loney is replaceable..

But who knows…in this market..and at Konerko’s age…He may just accept arbitration for 1 season. And a 1yr deal is fine enough.

by Joey Joe on Jun 12, 2010 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions

So he has a history of back issues.
Prudent then to give him a big multi year payday at the back end of his career?
Maybe in the AL where he can DH?

by 68elcamino427 on Jun 12, 2010 4:51 PM PDT up reply actions

You make that move because Loney is a major problem this year? Is 1B really the area we need to focus on right now? I, for one, think definitely not.

by KellyStephen on Jun 12, 2010 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions

James Loney ranks 19th in OPS amongst major league 1st basemen..

I dont think if you go around the diamond, there’s a more tempting upgrade.

Maybe Uggla for Blake Dewitt at 2nd base but thats not factoring in defense (which Uggla isnt very good at).

Furcal – there’s no one out there that’d be available.
Blake – same thing.
Russ Martin – there arent any good hitting catchers to replace him with.

Obviously, you probably wouldnt touch the OF.

If the Dodgers want to upgrade their offense, it has to come at either 1st base or 2nd base. And given Dewitt’s OBP this year, I think he’s fine there.

1st base is the weakest length where there could be upgrades out there.

by Joey Joe on Jun 12, 2010 4:30 PM PDT up reply actions

but does it really need an upgrade

and is Konerko good on defense? It sounds like you just want his bat. If that’s the case, something like Uggla and Dewitt would be the similar. Uggla has also much improved his defense lately.

Not that I’m advocating either trade.

And why are we discussing getting rid of Loney the night after he gets the only Dodger run?

by Tommy Blackjack on Jun 12, 2010 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

So you’ve narrowed it down to only 2 position players we could possibly upgrade?

by KellyStephen on Jun 12, 2010 4:41 PM PDT up reply actions

And because a guy is having a phenomenal first two months you think we should try to give up Loney and a pitching prospect to get a 34 year old just in time for him to come back to earth? And that’s what we need?

I respect the opinion but I disagree 100%.

by KellyStephen on Jun 12, 2010 4:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Cliff Lee trade parameters

The closest comp in recent memory would be the Sabathia trade from 2008. For 2+ months of elite starting pitching, Milwaukee surrendered:

Matt LaPorta, OF, age 23, (BA #1)
Rob Bryson, RHP, age 20, (BA #11)
Michael Brantley, OF, age 21, (BA #24)
Zach Jackson, LHP, age 25, (BA unranked)

What kills the Dodgers in this scenario is not having that premier prospect to front an offer. We can easily come up with comps for the last three guys but Seattle will want something pretty great at the top. He doesn’t look all that special now, but LaPorta was putting up monster power numbers in AA at the time. And there’s nobody in the Dodger system right now at that level. I suppose Ned could always overpay to compensate but that wouldn’t be smart (as we have learned w/Santana).

I'm still baffled

how two months of a great pitcher means you have to give up possible years of young players. But i’m not a GM.

by Tommy Blackjack on Jun 12, 2010 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions

How many times can he go to the well?
… is he consistent down the stretch?

cliff lee

beat us down last nlcs… not to mention he had a 1.56 era in 5 starts last postseason with a 4-0 record and 33 k’s in 40 1/3 innings.

we need the experienced ace

kershaw will be great in a few years but in a world series game 7, kershaw or cliff lee? i’m fine with oswalt as well, don’t know what’s been up with him though.

speaking of Cliff Lee (sort of)

Joe Blanton, the guy the Phillies chose to keep on their roster instead (since he was making a whole $1 mil less AND was signed for two additional years- yipee!), now has an ERA of 7.28. And anyone notice how much worse the Phillies have been since the sign-stealing story came out? Being a Dodger fan and all, I waited forever to even suggest that (at the risk of seeming like it was sour grapes), but this eye-popping slump has gone on long enough now that I can’t be the only one at least wondering about it.
