I saw your comments earlier about Strasburg

And I can say that I have not seen him throw 1 pitch. I read about it on mlb.com but I haven’t seen him yet. I know you were pumped. I cant imagine, in a PG world, what was going through your head when he was K’ing #14. :-)

He was insane that night

His second start wasn’t near as good, but thats saying more about how amazing the first was, as the second was definitely not bad, aside from the walks.

Its kind of hard for me to believe any stats these days

The Dodgers either win very close games or get blown out. But as Eric also says, they have won 21 out of their last 23 when they score at least 4 runs.

From Jon's article regarding Bills
The team wasn’t expecting [Billingsley] to miss any time, but he felt tightness during his latest bullpen workout at the very end on his pushoff leg, and the Dodgers didn’t want that to mess up his mechanics.

Somewhere, Eric Gagne is reading this and weeping.

by EMDarrow on Jun 15, 2010 3:57 PM PDT reply actions

Rotoworld
Dodgers placed RHP Chad Billingsley on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 12, with a groin strain.

Dodgers manager Joe Torre said that Billingsley suffered the injury during his start against the Angels on Friday. The team made the decision to place him on the disabled list after he attempted to throw a bullpen session on Tuesday. Ronald Belisario is now likely to stay in the starting rotation once Vicente Padilla returns from the disabled list.

Nice.

Another nugget. The Lakers have only been eliminated from the playoffs once at Staples Center.

2003 WCSF against the Spurs.

2000 – Won Title
2001 – Won Title
2002 – Won Title
2003 – Eliminated by Spurs at Staples
2004 – Eliminated @ Detroit
2005 – No playoffs
2006 – Eliminated @ Phoenix
2007 – Eliminated @ Phoenix
2008 – Eliminated @ Boston
2009 – Won Title

With that said they’ve only won one championship at Staples Center. 2000 against the Pacers.

SOMETHING WILL HAVE TO GIVE. : )

Since 1985

15 series, including this one, has gone at least 6 games.

The ultimate champion won the championship at home 11 times (including 3 that went 7). The odds are with the Celtics to close out tonight since all but one team that has led 3-2 in this format has won in 6 games.

Only three times has the trailing team won Game 6 but then the home team did go on to win the title at home each of those three times.

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/official_rules/start_end_4.jsp

Rule 4.12 (a) (7):

SUSPENDED GAMES.
(a) A game shall become a suspended game that must be completed at a future date if the game is terminated for any of the following reasons:

(7) The game has not become a regulation game (41/2 innings with the home team ahead, or 5 innings with the visiting club ahead or tied).

(8) If a game is suspended before it becomes a regulation game, and is continued prior to another regularly scheduled game, the regularly scheduled game with be limited to seven innings.

Explain?

by Alex41592 on Jun 15, 2010 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I believe that is for minor league games

I have seen that rule applied in those situations.

by bhsportsguy on Jun 15, 2010 5:50 PM PDT up reply actions

But this rule seems contradictory
© If a game is called, it is a regulation game:
    (1) If five innings have been completed;
    (2) If the home team has scored more runs in four or four and a fraction half-innings than the visiting team has scored in five completed half-innings;
    (3) If the home team scores one or more runs in its half of the fifth inning to tie the score.
(d) If a regulation game is called with the score tied, it shall become a suspended game. See Rule 4.12.
(e) If a game is called before it has become a regulation game, the umpire shall declare it "No Game."

I’m so angry against him because we qualified ofr the WC with an awful play… And I don’t like him beacause his ego is bigger than a pumpkin…

Secondly, I’m not very excited about these matches, some teams played under their levels, especially Brazil, Argentina, Portugal, France, Netherlands, Cameroon, Italy…
But I’m very surprised about the underrated nations like South Korea, Japan, Ghana, USA, North Korea…
The greatest game was Germany vs Australia because Germany was the only favorite team who played at their level and they have some young talent on their own as Ozil, Khedira, Neuer, Podolski, Muller, Badstuber, Lahm…
I hope Spain will play themselves tomorrow…

I wonder what this will mean for the Dodgers rotation choices later in the week. I’m guessing Kuroda is done for today whether they resume or not. If it’s finished tomorrow it’ll probably be a reliever so how much rest will Kuroda need before his next start? Or would they let Kuroda come back tomorrow?

by CTBMikeD on Jun 15, 2010 6:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I was thinking the rain out rules went like this:

If it doesnt make it past 5 innings, (or 4.5 with the home team leading) then its no game.
If it makes it past 5 innings, its an official game. However, if the game is tied, then they would suspend it and resume play later on. If someone was winning though, then that team would be deemed the winner.

Have there been any suspended games in the major leagues this year that had not made it past 5 innings, that they ended up resuming?

by Joey Joe on Jun 15, 2010 6:01 PM PDT reply actions

Only 2 this year that I can find

One that was tied after 9 innings. Rays won on a Burrell homer.

The other in Minnesota, no score after 5 IP .

great 1st half, but take nothing for granted. Anyone who does either has a short memory, or was born after 2008.

Speaking of 2008, you’d think that a semi-competent commissioner of baseball would learn from the mistakes of the 2008 World Series, and perhaps put in safeguards to prevent something like that from happening again. But of course, we’d have to have a semi-competent commissioner in the first place, in order for that to happen.

We’re gonna have to accept the fact that unless the umpires plan on keeping everyone around until 10 in the morning, this game’s gonna get called. (The only upside is that they didn’t predict the rain would start until about 10 PM east coast time, so maybe they’ll be wrong again. Unfortunately, the radar seems to suggest otherwise.)

If the game gets called, does it pick up later on same situation, or new game?

What's your competent idea as to how to safeguard against what happened?

Start manipulating the weather? Make games indoors? Move the venue to Kenya?

I vote for manipulating the weather.

by vadodger on Jun 15, 2010 7:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the game should be suspended and resumed from the point at which it was stopped

by Eric Stephen on Jun 15, 2010 7:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Isn’t that precisely what did happen in 2008 world series?

by Michael White on Jun 15, 2010 7:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, exactly

Not exactly analogous, but Selig did go above and beyond to suspend that game (could have been called as a regulation game with the Phillies leading)

by Eric Stephen on Jun 15, 2010 7:24 PM PDT up reply actions

basically waited for the Rays to tie it up

as far as I was concerned, that pretty much cemented my opinion on Selig. It was so clear that the game was going along because and ONLY because it was clearly a crisis, based on what was in the rulebook at the time. I know there was no consensus on what should have been done, but letting the players keep at it for the simple reason that it’d be easier to deal with a tie than a Phillie lead was literally the worst thing he could have done at the time, IMHO. The Phillies were enraged at the time, and rightfully so.

by sarcastro9 on Jun 15, 2010 7:37 PM PDT up reply actions

what Eric said

simple as that. But a weather-manipulating machine would be pretty sweet.

by sarcastro9 on Jun 15, 2010 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Isn't China working on that?

I’m not even joking, I thought I heard that one time.

by Michael White on Jun 15, 2010 7:23 PM PDT up reply actions

not sure

but I do vaguely recall some sort of sky-altering device during the Olympics, to make it more blue or something.

by sarcastro9 on Jun 15, 2010 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Put this one on the Player’s Union. They are dead set against double-headers. Remember when teams had two or three double-headers in their schedule every season? Yeah, back when they thought of the fans. It also freed up a few extra days for make up games.

"A baseball game is nothing but a great slow contraption for getting you to pay attention to the cadence of a summer day."

by Langhorne on Jun 15, 2010 7:23 PM PDT up reply actions

but wouldn't that actually be the opposite result of what's going to happen now?

now, we’re going to have a doubleheader, instead of merely resuming the game tomorrow, from the point at which it was postponed.

(Of course, this assumes the game will be cancelled, which is far more likely than not right now.)

by sarcastro9 on Jun 15, 2010 7:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, I was responding to the umpires waiting till the wee hours to call a game. The union wants them to get the games in no matter what.

I work with a guy like that

immigrated from France six years ago, dude has women hanging on him constantly. He’s married with 2-2/3 kids (one on the way, wife is about 7 mos along), so I guess theres a sort of poetic justice there… assuming he is in fact faithful (which I’ve no reason to believe he isn’t)

Casey

I don’t think Casey Blake ever, ever swings at the first pitch. I think I’ve been looking out for it for about 20 games now, so 80 or so PA. Pitchers must know this, it’s almost always a strike. And then he almost always has a great AB, starting behind. He mist really need to get a feel for the pitcher. But he does 2nd and 3rd times up too.

by berkowit28 on Jun 15, 2010 9:27 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

Nice observation

among Dodgers with 2 PA/gm this year (the number used by Baseball-Reference to qualify), Blake has the second-lowest 1st-strike swinging percentage at 12% (Carroll is at 7%).

http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/LAD/2010-batting.shtml#players_pitches_batting::15

The team is at 22%. Manny leads with 33%, and Ethier is 32%

I’d rather be honest than wear a shit-eating grin when he’s on the mound. I can appreciate what Sherrill did down the stretch for us (even if his peripherals suggested fluke), but he’s been a total liability since last October.

I'd be perfectly happy if he refinds himself and pitches well again

starting with this mop up inning.

I don’t expect it, but will be happy if he does since it appears he’s going nowhere this season other than perhaps another phantom DL stint.

OT: I saw the thread above about living in the south.

I grew up in Alabama and have lived in Atlanta for the last 9 months and I wouldn’t trade living down here for anything in the world. I just don’t see myself living anywhere else. Living in southern California would probably blow my fucking mind.

The worst part about the pollen to me is that your car becomes pretty much unwashable from March until about May b/c as soon as you wash it…it gets that yellowish tint back.

For any NBA fans in the Dodger group

They should be able to get aboard their charter by 5:30 local time, the flight is 2 hours and 10 minutes, they should be able to be at their hotel by tip-off.

I wonder how many people will show up at Fenway, their game against the D-Backs starts early, 6:10, so fans should be able to go to both.
