Dodgers Go For Sweep Of Diamondbacks
The Dodgers wrap up their series with Arizona with a businessman's special, as Carlos Monasterios and old friend Edwin Jackson face off. The last time Edwin Jackson started at Dodger Stadium was September 26, 2005, against the Pirates. The Dodger lineup that day was:
Aybar 3B
Choi 1B
Robles SS
Kent 2B
Cruz RF
Navarro C
Werth LF
Repko CF
Jackson P
Nothing says "2005 Dodgers" like Oscar Robles batting third.
Jackson has thrown 36 1/3 innings in his last five starts, although part of that is because A.J. Hinch is reluctant to hand the ball to his bullpen. He was burned in two of those starts, as Jackson allowed three runs to the Dodgers in the seventh inning on May 12, and allowed five runs in the eighth inning to the Rockies on May 22. In the first two games of this series, the Arizona starting pitcher has pitched eight innings, with Rodrigo Lopez throwing 115 pitches Monday and Dan Haren throwing 126 pitches last night.
Carlos Monasterios pitched four and five innings in his previous two starts, but the Dodgers don't expect him to pitch especially deep into the game. If he can give them five innings like he did in Colorado on Friday, that would be just fine. Behind Monasterios is a well-rested bullpen, as only Jonathan Broxton, Hong-Chih Kuo, Ronald Belisario, and Jeff Weaver have pitched in the last two games.
Notes
- Casey Blake has an eight-game hitting streak, during which he is hitting .313/.313/.500
- Since today is a day game after a night game, Manny Ramirez will be out of the starting lineup, per Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times. It is the ninth time in 10 opportunities that Manny has rested on a day game after a night game. The only time he played a day game after a night game was the second day after returning from the disabled list.
- The four best records in the National League are all by former National League West teams: Padres (31-21), Reds (31-22), Dodgers (30-22), and Braves (30-22).
- Cory Wade, who is on the 60-day disabled list following shoulder surgery in March, has started throwing bullpen sessions in Arizona, per Evan Drellich of MLB.com.
- The Dodgers are 2-1 in three-game sweep opportunities this season, in the third game after winning the first two games of a series.

Haeger
I’m coming around on the idea that Haeger should be given another shot. While I realize the bullpen has not been taxed recently since the Big 4 pitchers (yup Ely has pitched well enough to be considered a mainstay) are consistently going 7+ innings, but that certainly can’t be counted on going forward. A pitcher like Monasterios who can only realistically (in a best case scenario) give you 5 games is pretty limited in usefullness. As such, Haeger being able to start and pitch deep into games should be given another look. This time around I think Torre should limit Haeger to pitching only as a SP (like he would for every other SP on the team) and see how it goes. If Haeger can’t get it done, I don’t see the need for him in the bullpen.
Haeger has gone 6 innings
Once this year I believe. He hasn’t really proven he can be an innings eater
by SeanMillerSavior on Jun 2, 2010 9:18 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Sure, but Torre has also pitched him in relief in between his scheduled starts. Maybe that affected him, maybe it didn’t. He pitched better last year without the burden of having to be both starter and reliever—- a burden no other player on the Dodgers had to bear.
Besides, we know Haeger can pitch deep into games. I’m fairly certain Monk is not able to do so.

If Padilla
Is ready by the 18th, it won’t matter. The last start the Dodgers need from a 5th starter is next Monday, after that not until the Boston series. By then Padilla will have his three rehab starts and he will be on track to pitch that weekend.
You think that Ely
will move to the 5th position? Or will they try to take it easy with Padilla?
I just have an irrational dislike/distrust of Padilla. I’d rather see him less.
They say to never hit a man with a closed fist. But it is, on occasion, hilarious.
It won't matter
The Dodger schedule after June does not allow a lot of opportunities for skipping starts. One thing to keep in mind is the number of innings pitched by Ely, they may want to give him break if he is approaching a set number.
Ahh, ok.
I was just thinking because of the nature of Padilla’s injury, that it might be smarter to have Ely continue to pitch like he has been (assuming that he doesn’t turn into a pumpkin/Clark Kent/Jason Schmidt) and pull him at 100 pitches or 6 innings or whatever…a simliar leash to what Kershaw had in the past.
They say to never hit a man with a closed fist. But it is, on occasion, hilarious.
As SilverWidow noted in a fanpost
Ely is already 24 and pitched 150+innings last year. They don’t really need to have the same concerns they had with CK.
by Michael White on Jun 2, 2010 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions
That's what I get for not reading everything.
I keep forgetting that Ely is my age and thus not that young in baseball standards. He just seems so adorable in his interviews and when they show candid shots of him during games.
They say to never hit a man with a closed fist. But it is, on occasion, hilarious.
I loved how sheepish he looked last night when he thought there were 3 outs

With Padilla
I’m taking a pretty bearish approach. From what was written about the injury when he suffered it, it seems it could be pretty significant and could limit him for the entire year. I wouldn’t be surprised if Padilla makes 1 or 2 starts, struggles, and is right back on the DL.
That’s my very uniformed guess though. But you are right, my scenario above is moot if Padilla comes back.
by Michael White on Jun 2, 2010 9:35 AM PDT up reply actions
Right
but I think Padilla getting derailed is the only way Haeger gets any type of extended shot at starting.
I mean, he could be ready to pitch by Monday, but I wonder what move they would make.
Agreed
Although I don’t think it will matter much since there is potentially only one start left (next Monday)tbefore June 18. If Padilla doesn’t progress as needed, then they can go to Haeger to bridge the gap.
by Eric Stephen on Jun 2, 2010 9:24 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Haeger has too much variation for my taste buds. No proof to back this up, but my gut tells me that while Haeger is more likely to go 6-7 innings in a start than Monasterios, he is also more likely to not retire a single batter. Just give me a consistent slightly above replacement level starter until Padilla gets back.
I'm gonna miss the D-backs
We’ll see them again at the beginning of July, but then they’ll be absent from our lives until the second to last weekend of the season.
Six of the Dodgers final nine games are against AZ, for whatever that’s worth.
We just need to survive June with a respectable record. Things get a little easier after that. I feel like September might be our easiest month left.

by CarolinaDodger on Jun 2, 2010 9:44 AM PDT up reply actions
Lots of really good starters
It will be tough for CK. It might depend on which NL pitchers pitch on the final Sunday before the break, since they are ineligible.
Depending on when he and other pitchers start before the AS game
Jimenez, Halladay, Josh Johnson, possibly Jaime Garcia, Wainwright, Hudson, Pelfrey, Livan, Garland, Lincecum, Gallardo, Oswalt, Dempster, Carpenter, and a few others all would likely be in front of Kershaw at this point either by pitching better thus far, or being one of the only candidates on their team for the AS game, lol.

It sure is shiny and nice, but Livan is one of 2 people who could be all-stars (to my knowledge) for the Nats. I just think they might give it to Livan instead for that fact.

A kid here at work uses StubHub a lot. His tip was to buy day of game becuase the price drop is substantial. So if your schedule is flexible you can get some great deals. (My daughter, for example, bought $0.99 tickets for the Cleveland exhibition game at Dodger Stadium this year.)
Plus, he went to one of the Phillie playoff games last year, through StubHub. He went to his upper reserved level seat and there was a Stub Hub rep waiting for him. Since he was a frequent user, they had a special upgrade for him. Seems that no one had bought 2 of the tickets in the yellow seats behind home plate, so he got moved down there for free. I wouldn’t have believed him but he showed me his ticket the next day. Amazing…5 rows up for about $20 a seat.

My wife made an interesting comment last night
after Manny made the catch against the wall. She seemed to think it was ridiculous that he got so much attention from his teammates for making a play any left fielder should make. Kind of like treating the “special kid” to more attention when he does something normal for the grade level. Our expectations for Manny in the outfield are low, for his teammates it must be even lower.

Man, did you take your cranky pills this morning? I’d suggest you try decaf tomorrow.

If you could have any prospect not named Strasburg come to the Dodgers, who would it be?
At this point I think I’d want Mike Stanton. The dude sounds mythical from what I’ve been reading. He’s apparently got insane power, and has been said to have hit 550 foot homeruns. I guess he should be up with the Marlins in the next week or so, and I’d love to see what he’s got in the majors.
It would be nice to have him replace Manny after this year and just watch him rake, even if he will strike out a lot.
I thought it would make for some good discussion to see who other people would want, not named Strasburg of course.

Carlos Santana!
You walked into that one.

Hahaha
I should have known!
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
BTW
I saw your alma matter caught a beating yesterday in the CIF Baseball Finals.

They made it to the playoffs? That’s awesome, hahah. I totally pay attention to things. Hell, I live 2 streets over from the baseball fields, how am I expected to look and see if baseball is being played 30 feet from the fence next to the sidewalk?
Who were they playing?
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
Oh ok. The last I had actually heard about the Royal baseball team was back in 07 and 08 when they were really bad. Back in 05 they were one win away from playing for the CIF championship at Angel Stadium I believe. I think they threw the game because it was going to be the same day as prom, hahaha.
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
Royal did burn up their ace the game before
so not too surprising on the score
by SeanMillerSavior on Jun 2, 2010 11:52 AM PDT up reply actions
Is there anyone good enough on Royal to go in the draft? Any idea?

Cody Buckel
- pitcher from Royal .. . Hes a top 3 round talent

also has a commitment to Pepperdine
Id love to see the Dodgers take him. Not only was he
royals best pitcher, but he was also Royals best hitter. . .

Haha, nice
I remember back in 06 Kevin Harrington went in the 11th round to the Twins as a SP. He put up awful numbers, and then I think they turned him into a hitter, and he was even worse. I heard he started working at Home Depot after he was cut and then he lost an eye in a motorcycle accident :/
He had a really, really hot gf though, so I suppose that helps.

Such is high school baseball
Unless you have 2 legit starting pitchers, it’ll be tough to advance to a championship.
Royal had a tough fight the game before, certainly couldn’t risk holding off their ace until the championship game.

Fabio Anchovio
The talented SS out of the Italian league. The Italian version of Alex Rodriguez, that’s for sure.
Is he expected to come to the US any time soon?
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
low contact rate on Stanton is a little scary, sounds more like Cecil Fielder or Adam Dunn than a well-rounded prospect.
Assuming we can’t take Heyward, I’d probably want Montero.
http://www.dingersblog.com
He sounds like Adam Dunn with more power, which makes me drool. I’ve been craving real, raw power on this team for a long, long time.

He would be a good choice definitely.
Anyone familiar with the top prospects in baseball, who would be the top 3 pitching prospects today?
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
Off the top of my head Strasberg, Hellickson and Matusz.
by regfairfield on Jun 2, 2010 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions
Matusz is a major leaguer now, he’s been up all season and was up for part of last season and I think he’s been struggling quite a bit, but so is the entire team in Baltimore.

If we aren’t counting guys that haven’t been up, then Chapman probably.

Jokes aside
Wouldn’t you rather take Santana? I mean, he’s already performing at AAA. Harper is too far away.
by Michael White on Jun 2, 2010 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions
yes but Ned ended that dream
Harper has talent, great bat speed, can play plus positions. It would just be nice to watch him over a couple years in our system, see him at IE, then progress to the big club by age 20…….

Did you read Posnanski's blog post on Harper yesterday?
He compares Harper to Alex Gordon in one specific sense: the Nationals, like the Royals way back when, have no choice. The Royals had to take Gordon — he was universally lauded, they would have been called fools if they’d taken anyone else, it would have been a PR disaster… but see, there was this other 3B prospect they liked just as much, this guy Zimmerman. Now Zimmerman is a star and Gordon is trying to work things out. Now that doesn’t mean the Royals shoulda taken Zimmerman — maybe if you go back and do it over, it’s Zimmerman who is slow to develop or even a bust, and Gordon goes on to be a star — just that the Royals had no choice.
Now it’s the Nationals that have no choice. They have to take Harper. But he is 17. That makes him, by definition, not a sure thing. Maybe there’s somebody in the draft that the Nats like who’s a little more of a sure thing — but it doesn’t matter. They have to take Harper.

I get your point
but you always have a choice, even if that choice is to suck up the PR disaster and listen to your scouts and payer dev guys and do what you think is best. All draftees are crap shoots of some variety and if you draft becuase the PR not your talent eval then you will end up with lots of very early picks.
by MammothDodger on Jun 2, 2010 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions
Not that I really disagree, but I’ll take the other side of the argument.
The choice is take Harper or don’t. Everyone, everyone, everyone is saying take Harper.
If they take Harper, and he pans out, everyone is happy.
If they take Harper, and he doesn’t pan out, that’ll be a bummer, but no one will get fired. They were following the conventional wisdom.
Let’s say they don’t take Harper, but Player X. Let’s say X becomes a star, and so does Harper. That’s fine. Everybody keeps their jobs.
But now let’s say the Nats are wrong. X doesn’t pan out and Harper becomes a star. In this case — this only case — everybody gets fired.
When you go against the conventional wisdom, you have to be right. You will be judged on that. Sure, you can say, “It was a group decision, I trusted my scouts” — and you can tell it to your unemployment office caseworker.

and i am not going to disagree with this either
just going to say that the shelf life of MLB GMs and staff is kind of short anyhow, and they could be talking to that caseworker long before either the PR fav or player X are ready to make an impact on the big club.
I guess for me it just comes down to I would rather stand on convictions and take my chances then follow the breeze. I guess I am now officially an oldtimer.

Chipper Jones
left today’s game with a finger injury. News since Atlanta comes to L.A tomorrow.
How is that man still playing?
He’s like, a billion.
They say to never hit a man with a closed fist. But it is, on occasion, hilarious.

Dylan Hernandez is hilarious
On the pregame show, Charley Steiner just asked him how he slept last night with a newborn, and Dylan responded (paraphrased):
I slept fine, but my wife was up all night with the baby, plus she was up early to iron my clothes this morning.
Dylan is no A.J. Ellis
The writers were noting during Torre’s pre-game media session that A.J. Ellis missed the birth of his child to stay with the club, while Dylan took a month off.
