I didn’t know that the Beard is still in the game. DeWitt is out and Belliard moved from third to second.

Really hate to see the D-Backs’ starters take this kind of abuse because of the bullpen follies

Yeah, just figured that the “usually bad starting pitcher is still throwing late in the game” moment was because the usually bad pitcher had a high pitch count and the D-Backs didn’t want to go to the bullpen. :-O

lol guess we can call it abuse now

I guess a 38 year old .150 hitter is gonna get his fair share of cyber-beatings

but there’s some particularly vitriolic about the anti-GA comments this year, particularly surprising for a team that’s so close to first. I mean, worse than SWEENEY?! Does anyone remember what Mark Sweeney looked like in 2008? He literally was a slightly better hitter than Kershaw is now, and probably not as good as Billingsley. By contrast, GA could just as easily had at least 4 home runs this year by now (including one today), if not for just a few feet and some bad luck. He was a co-hero in Saturday’s game, yet it takes about 2 bad at-bats for everyone to treat him like the worst over-the-hill pinch hitter who ever lived.

Again, I’m not saying he’s good enough to even be a fourth outfielder, but I’m just not getting the over-the-topness in some of these comments.

Ok, I’m done now.

thank you

That’s all I’m saying. Obviously, I would literally have no time left for anything else to do throughout the day if I responded to every negative GA comment. But “worse than Sweeney” was just too much for me to ignore.

by sarcastro9 on Jun 2, 2010 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Please look at Sweeney’s numbers. Anderson has literally been worse.

.130/.250/.163 in 92 at bats 15 walks

.156/.183/.247 in 77 at bats 3 walks

Is there anyone who can HONESTLY tell me there is ANY difference between the two? I’m willing to concede they are equally horrible, except for the fact that Sweeney could actually work a walk.

"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"

GA – 7 RBI
MS – 5 RBI

And yes, RBIs matter when talking about guys who are primarily PHs who will frequently bat with runners on base.

The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.

by David Young on Jun 2, 2010 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess so, but when it’s really that close, does it really even matter? GA also has one HR to Sweeney’s zero, and that may have just inflated GA’s slugging percentage. If Sweeney had that HR his Slugging percentage would look much better.

That’s worse than Ethier’s OBP!

I feel like I’m not even being hard on GA, I feel like I could be much, much worse on him. I don’t understand why anyone would defend his season. Literally anyone in this system could come up, take his place, and be at least 1.5 times better than him and probably make less than he is.

I really don’t like him, but it’s because of his AWFUL play, no other reason.

That’s the type of player he is here to be, someone who doesn’t get a big sample size. To this point he’s been terrible, worse than Andruw Jones was, worse than Sweeney, worse than Loretta, worse than anyone I’ve seen on this team ever.

He’s an automatic out almost 9 times out of 10. I feel sad whenever I see him at the plate, lol.

"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"

He’s hitting .150, that’s half way better than 1 hit of every 10 at bats. I realize I am being a tad unfair, but it is possible that because of the string of shitty PH the Dodgers have had since 2006, I’m taking out all of my frustrations from them and putting them on GA.

It’s already June and by June people were certainly calling for Sweeney’s head too.

by Michael White on Jun 2, 2010 2:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Why shouldn’t we go off what he’s done so far to see how good he’s been so far? It makes sense to go off what has happened this season, and we have no big reason to believe he will be much better from here forward EXCEPT for the fact that I don’t believe he or ANYONE could do any worse.

I really feel strongly against GA.

by regfairfield on Jun 2, 2010 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions

That's because it's not Troncoso's fault

A few bad at bats?

His OPS is just barely treading water above .400. He is basically an increased K rate away from replicating what hitters did against 2003 Eric Gagne.

And I for one don’t think we should temper our criticism of parts of the team that are legitimately terrible and easily fixable just because we’re close to first place. In fact, it should be the opposite. Because we are so close to first, we should be critical of every at bat GA gets, because there is a real chance that we finish a game or two out of first.

People defending GA are possibly missing the point

I have no idea of Xavier Paul would do any better as a pinch hitter then GA because that is a hard job, but I have no doubt that Paul would be more valuable as a pinch runner, pinch fielder, and giving Manny a rest against on day games following night games.

Having Paul on the 25 man roster simply makes the Dodgers a better team.

This

It’s especially baffling to me when there are comments like “but there’s some particularly vitriolic about the anti-GA comments this year, particularly surprising for a team that’s so close to first.” The difference between Paul and Anderson is marginal. Maybe a win or two over the course of the entire season if Paul plays really well. But the criticism should be amplified for a team close to first, not dampened. Those marginal wins are all that might keep us out of the playoffs.

by mattsd on Jun 2, 2010 3:27 PM PDT up reply actions

That is a defensible position

I would think Paul could (if not would) get enough playing time to warrant it.

Delwyn Young’s poor performance at the job may have put a sour taste in Torre’s / Colletti’s mouths.

I’d feel better if Paul did that on the bench than if GA hit like he has on the bench.

by Ivdown on Jun 2, 2010 3:34 PM PDT up reply actions

since I started this whole thing today

I’ll just say I was defending him more on a scale relative to the comments being made at the time. I wasn’t on TBLA in ‘08, so I don’t know what people were saying about Sweeney. But I did see comments about Loretta last year, and they were very lukewarm compared to what GA has pretty much been getting all season.

Again, I’m not saying GA is good right now, just not as awful as his numbers, or the comments, would indicate. Of course, that was before his epic fail of a strikeout in the 10th. I still like the guy and all, but he’s on his own for the time being- I’ve got enough to worry about!

Today Anderson had a 10 bouncer go between his legs to the wall in left

Last aging former star I saw pull this trick was Cesar Cedeno

Loretta was better than Sweeney. And to futher Phil’s point, had defensive value.

by Michael White on Jun 2, 2010 3:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I would honestly rather have anyone else

Because the chances of someone being worse are so remote, that it’s instantly a winning move to replace him on the roster. I’ll take Lindsay, Gibbons, Redman, whoever.

Just for fun

If the Dodgers lose and it’s a shutout, they’ll lead the league in times shut out with eight. Pirates and Dodgers both have seven right now.

Record for most times shut out in a season is 30 by 1963 Mets (records only go back to 1920). The Dodgers/Pirates pace would put them around the top 5-10 if they keep it up.
