I didn’t know that the Beard is still in the game. DeWitt is out and Belliard moved from third to second.
Really hate to see the D-Backs’ starters take this kind of abuse because of the bullpen follies

All 3 starters went 8 innings this series
Including Rodrigo Lopez…wow.

These games have been AZ's to lose.
I think our offense is pulling a Lake Show.
They say to never hit a man with a closed fist. But it is, on occasion, hilarious.
At least Belliard ruined Jackson's minimum game
And until that walk, Jamey Carroll was all that was standing between us and a perfect game.

Rudimentary creatures of flesh and blood, you touch my mind, fumbling in ignorance, incapable of understanding.
I guess a 38 year old .150 hitter is gonna get his fair share of cyber-beatings
but there’s some particularly vitriolic about the anti-GA comments this year, particularly surprising for a team that’s so close to first. I mean, worse than SWEENEY?! Does anyone remember what Mark Sweeney looked like in 2008? He literally was a slightly better hitter than Kershaw is now, and probably not as good as Billingsley. By contrast, GA could just as easily had at least 4 home runs this year by now (including one today), if not for just a few feet and some bad luck. He was a co-hero in Saturday’s game, yet it takes about 2 bad at-bats for everyone to treat him like the worst over-the-hill pinch hitter who ever lived.
Again, I’m not saying he’s good enough to even be a fourth outfielder, but I’m just not getting the over-the-topness in some of these comments.
Ok, I’m done now.

Rudimentary creatures of flesh and blood, you touch my mind, fumbling in ignorance, incapable of understanding.
Are you suggesting to go easy on GA because he could be suckier?
Let justice be done, though the world perish.
Imagine the hate if this blog was around for Daryle Ward circa 2002
by Michael White on Jun 2, 2010 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions
That was 2003 :P
and he hit
.183/.211/.193 in 109 at bats with 3 walks. He would go right along with 2008 Sweeney and current day GA.
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
OPS+ of 9. Believe it or not, Ward was worse than both of them.
by Michael White on Jun 2, 2010 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions
thank you
That’s all I’m saying. Obviously, I would literally have no time left for anything else to do throughout the day if I responded to every negative GA comment. But “worse than Sweeney” was just too much for me to ignore.
Please look at Sweeney’s numbers. Anderson has literally been worse.
.130/.250/.163 in 92 at bats 15 walks
.156/.183/.247 in 77 at bats 3 walks
Is there anyone who can HONESTLY tell me there is ANY difference between the two? I’m willing to concede they are equally horrible, except for the fact that Sweeney could actually work a walk.
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
GA – 7 RBI
MS – 5 RBI
And yes, RBIs matter when talking about guys who are primarily PHs who will frequently bat with runners on base.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
I guess so, but when it’s really that close, does it really even matter? GA also has one HR to Sweeney’s zero, and that may have just inflated GA’s slugging percentage. If Sweeney had that HR his Slugging percentage would look much better.
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
Impossible
Though he was OPSING .386 on May 19th…so he’s…slightly better now…
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
Dude, WHY are you defending him? You act like he has a .750 OPS
IT’S WORSE THAN .430!!!!
That’s worse than Ethier’s OBP!
I feel like I’m not even being hard on GA, I feel like I could be much, much worse on him. I don’t understand why anyone would defend his season. Literally anyone in this system could come up, take his place, and be at least 1.5 times better than him and probably make less than he is.
I really don’t like him, but it’s because of his AWFUL play, no other reason.
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
That’s the type of player he is here to be, someone who doesn’t get a big sample size. To this point he’s been terrible, worse than Andruw Jones was, worse than Sweeney, worse than Loretta, worse than anyone I’ve seen on this team ever.
He’s an automatic out almost 9 times out of 10. I feel sad whenever I see him at the plate, lol.
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
I don't think he's worse than Sweeney
Didn’t Sweeney have a stretch where he went like 0 for 50
by Michael White on Jun 2, 2010 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions
He has hit several hard outs
9 out of 10 is an exaggeration.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
He’s hitting .150, that’s half way better than 1 hit of every 10 at bats. I realize I am being a tad unfair, but it is possible that because of the string of shitty PH the Dodgers have had since 2006, I’m taking out all of my frustrations from them and putting them on GA.
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
Sweeney 2008: OPS+ 13
Anderson 2010: OPS+16
Ya, we really shouldn’t make any comparisons between the two.
by Michael White on Jun 2, 2010 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions
Small sample size
OPS+ to date this season is not particularly accurate.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
The raw numbers are close enough.
It’s already June and by June people were certainly calling for Sweeney’s head too.
by Michael White on Jun 2, 2010 2:38 PM PDT up reply actions
Why shouldn’t we go off what he’s done so far to see how good he’s been so far? It makes sense to go off what has happened this season, and we have no big reason to believe he will be much better from here forward EXCEPT for the fact that I don’t believe he or ANYONE could do any worse.
I really feel strongly against GA.
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
GA is probably finished and has the lowest WAR on the team right now. But Troncoso has the second lowest and hasn’t gotten nearly the hate that GA has.
That's because it's not Troncoso's fault
it’s Torre’s for overplaying him. LOL Irony?
They say to never hit a man with a closed fist. But it is, on occasion, hilarious.
I haven’t watched too much of Tron in the last month, but I’ve seen a lot of GA and that is probably why from me.
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
How? I haven’t seen Tron giving up all these homeruns and pitching horribly, but I’ve been able to see a lot of GA do the same. I’m sure if I’d seen Tron more I’d be a tad angrier at him.
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
Your feeling are far stronger
than his actual negative value merits
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
A few bad at bats?
His OPS is just barely treading water above .400. He is basically an increased K rate away from replicating what hitters did against 2003 Eric Gagne.
And I for one don’t think we should temper our criticism of parts of the team that are legitimately terrible and easily fixable just because we’re close to first place. In fact, it should be the opposite. Because we are so close to first, we should be critical of every at bat GA gets, because there is a real chance that we finish a game or two out of first.
85 PAs this season
it doesn’t take much to swing those numbers wildly.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Haven't caught up yet, and I'm sure someone has mentioned it already
But over the last 20 innings, including the entire ninth today, Arizona is scoreless and the Dodgers have scored 2 runs on Kelly Johnson’s fielding fail, 1 on the balk-off, and 1 on the Bison blast-off. An offensive bonanza this has not been.

That is not really all that bad. I am annoyed that you can’t activate smart phones nowadays without having a data plan. It’s especially baffling to me when there are comments like “but there’s some particularly vitriolic about the anti-GA comments this year, particularly surprising for a team that’s so close to first.” The difference between Paul and Anderson is marginal. Maybe a win or two over the course of the entire season if Paul plays really well. But the criticism should be amplified for a team close to first, not dampened. Those marginal wins are all that might keep us out of the playoffs.
That is a defensible position
I would think Paul could (if not would) get enough playing time to warrant it.
Delwyn Young’s poor performance at the job may have put a sour taste in Torre’s / Colletti’s mouths.

Young was better than Sweeney
By a lot.

Yes, but we'd be pretty unhappy if XPaul hit
.246 .321 .341 .663
this season.

since I started this whole thing today
I’ll just say I was defending him more on a scale relative to the comments being made at the time. I wasn’t on TBLA in ‘08, so I don’t know what people were saying about Sweeney. But I did see comments about Loretta last year, and they were very lukewarm compared to what GA has pretty much been getting all season.
Again, I’m not saying GA is good right now, just not as awful as his numbers, or the comments, would indicate. Of course, that was before his epic fail of a strikeout in the 10th. I still like the guy and all, but he’s on his own for the time being- I’ve got enough to worry about!
Today Anderson had a 10 bouncer go between his legs to the wall in left
Last aging former star I saw pull this trick was Cesar Cedeno
He was off the roster within a week

Loretta was better than Sweeney. And to futher Phil’s point, had defensive value.

I would honestly rather have anyone else
Because the chances of someone being worse are so remote, that it’s instantly a winning move to replace him on the roster. I’ll take Lindsay, Gibbons, Redman, whoever.

They will be spent tomorrow for the red hot braves.

But the Braves have to fly
here while the Dodgers get to rest all night. I still think the Dodgers have a significant advantage presuming we end this very very soon.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Could they send down the German
and grab someone else in the meantime?
They say to never hit a man with a closed fist. But it is, on occasion, hilarious.
Only if you didn't mind the German being down for 10 days
It would likely hurt during that time frame.

Eh, reliever roulette
Leach, Link, whoever’s good at the time.

I'd rather keep up the German
considering how well he’s pitching, but eh is about right. I wouldn’t feel strongly about it one way or the other.

I'll gladly pay you next Tuesday
for an arm that can pitch today.

Eh - they have a long time before tomorrow's NIGHT game
Plenty of time to nap.
Now, all those bullpen arms that are getting used today…..

Hit hard, but hits the bag.
Might have been a double instead of a single.

what is happening?
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
for me, Adam Laroche has hit 16 singles off of belisario all in the same inning

Team ERA is being helped out a lot this series
It was 4.12 before today, it MAY have a chance to get to 4 today.

"Tough as nails"
Are nails really all that tough?
Or is this phrase specifically referring to Lenny Dykstra?
Nails are tough
at least the original nails created by blacksmiths

Tough as nails. Cheap as shit.

Just for fun
If the Dodgers lose and it’s a shutout, they’ll lead the league in times shut out with eight. Pirates and Dodgers both have seven right now.
Record for most times shut out in a season is 30 by 1963 Mets (records only go back to 1920). The Dodgers/Pirates pace would put them around the top 5-10 if they keep it up.
