Garret Anderson Joins Dodgers Walk-Off Brigade
Three games on the homestand; three walk-off wins. The latest came in the 14th inning today, as the much-maligned Garret Anderson hit a single to center to bring home Matt Kemp with the only run of the game, giving the Dodgers the 1-0 win and another series sweep over Arizona.
Carlos Monasterios was very good; he did his job with five scoreless innings. Edwin Jackson was great, throwing nine scoreless innings and 123 pitches to boot. Arizona starting pitchers gave up two earned runs in 25 innings in this three-game series, but have no wins to show for it.
Travis Schlichting pitched the final four innings out of the bullpen for his first major league win.
The Dodgers held the Diamondbacks scoreless for the final 31 innings of the series.
The last time the Dodgers won back-to-back 1-0 games was July 28-29, 1984, against the Reds.
WP - Travis Schlichting (1-0): 4 IP, 3 hits, 1 walk, 1 strikeout
LP - Cesar Valdez (1-2): 1.2 IP, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 1 strikeout

I guess the Dodgers pitched better
Arizona allows
Two solo home runs.
A 2-run scoring double error
A balk driven run
2 singles that drove in runs.
7 runs, 5 earned in 31 2/3 innings and get swept.
I blame the 6:10 start
After Billingsley gives up the solo HR to Snyder, no other Diamondback crossed home plate for 31 innings.
The Dodgers had 33 IP and 4 ER for a little more than 1 ERA.
hahahaha

So yeah
That was fun and all but maybe tomorrow LA can score a run before the 9th. I know it’s not always exciting or dramatic but…
All eyes turn to Petco
No score (what’s that like? in the 4th.
At least for the next few weeks, yes.
Now it’s just a matter of whether Haeger’s rehab time starts over with his new toe injury, giving them another 30 days until they have to decide.
If his rehab starts go well
he can pitch for the Dodgers on June 18.
That would be the next time after Monday that the 5th spot is needed.
Is this injury for real?
When Haeger went on the DL, nobody seemed to think his injury was real.
He wasn’t impressive in rehab, and now he’s supposed to have another injury. Is this injury real, or is it an excuse for more time in the minors?
People don't think it be like this, but it do.
The German
said he hadn’t thrown 4 innings since high school, but then turned around and said he did so in the Arizona Fall League.
perfect ending
You have to admit. a middle finger extended to all of us from GA ;) Was following end on my phone while heading out and tried not to burst out laughing on the tram. also: kudos to the German! eine kleine nacht musik for him.

Dodgers have scored two runs in June, neither during the first 9 innings of a game, and won both.

does this mean garret anderson is going to stick around for a while longer???
He could use Griffey as a role model.
Or, he could pull a John Kruk and say he wanted one last hit, got that hit, and now he could retire.

reason 143 for why Haegar should not start again
Dodgers 0-5 in his starts
Monk/Ramon Ortiz combo are 4-1
So now the 5th spot is inching closer to .500
Kershaw, Bills, team is 7-4 for each
Kuroda – team is 7-3
Padilla/Ely – 6-5
GA should consider
retiring, he can end his career on a high note.

I don't generally complain as a Laker fan

But if not for the Worthy brain cramp and after the blow out in Game 3, the Lakers would have won that series.
I kid
because I care. I am a lowly Thunder fan so all I have is the jabs at fans of teams that actually win.:)
I remember back when the Thunder were the Supersonics
and the Lakers came back to win a playoff game in 1980. Many thought that was a huge step for that team because Seattle had been their nemesis in the late ’70s and were the defending NBA Champions.

Chris Volk has a thorough game recap with quotes
over on Dodgerfan.net:
On potentially making a roster move to add a reliever:
“Kim [Ng] is out there waiting to talk to me. She’s going to come in and ask me the same question. I haven’t really digested this yet and I don’t know where we would make room for that person, but we are going to be a bit short, so we’ll have to see."
That can work both ways
He had to be perfect in a 1-0. Also, this inning is lasting a little longer than the other ones.
I just read about the game
that Babe Ruth started in 1917. He walked the first guy, got thrown out for arguing, and the guy that relieved him got the next 26 in a row. BTW, the guy that Ruth walked, got caught stealing. That is freakin awesome.
Goes down as a combined no-hitter. LOL
Garrett agrees with most of you
Garret Anderson:
On how big the game-winning hit was for him personally:
"I don’t really worry about myself personally too much. I just try and contributed as much as I can with what I got and fortunately I was able to do something today when it counted."
On the fans getting restless:
"I’ve had that before and it’s well deserved. I don’t mind hearing boos when I’m out there not doing the things I’m capable of doing. So yeah, I’ll take those boos."
anyone have the audio of the Steiner calls? I'm curious to hear just how awful they really were.
I’m guessing at least the final play is available, if not the faux-Carroll walk off.
I was sitting in my car, like a creeper
in front of someone else’s house because the spots by mine were all taken up. I screamed when the Steiner call came through. It was so bad. I had no idea what was going on. But I did laugh for a good 5 minutes. Ivdown must have exploded.
They say to never hit a man with a closed fist. But it is, on occasion, hilarious.
The last few have ended with a K or ball to the left side.
How does this one go out?
Ok guys,
NOW do you think we should have instant replay?! I know I’ve already endured enough controversy for today, but come on- I can’t be alone on THIS one!

replay showed he was out easily
i wonder what joyces explanation will be after the game
i did too
but come on…
this is history… and even if it was really close..which it wasnt, the call should go to galaraga.. the man with only 1 out left… he really f’ed up big time
So let me get this straight…
1) you thought he was safe as the play happened;
2) the guy on the field responsible for making the call agreed with you, and he “f’ed up big time”???
YES
its his job….
and actually i didnt think he was safe…
it really wasnt even that close…
galaraga touched the base way sooner then donald and he just f’ed up big time…
dont understand how you can defend the guy who f’ed up history
It isn’t close when you watch a slow motion replay, but in real time yes it was a close play. I’m not defending Jim Joyce; I am just pointing out that it was a close play.
To say he fucked up history is pretty ridiculous
he kinda did fuck up history though
21 perfect games instead of 22…
no armando gallaraga in the history books/…
but whatever i guess he didnt fuck up history
So he should go down as a guy who fucked up history, even though he made a judgement call that after instant replay was deemed to be wrong? That is a little harsh man.
My point is it's a judgement call and not that huge in the big scheme of things
Fucked up history is bombing Pearl Harbour….not blowing a call in a baseball game in June.
but its a perfect game
i was so sad and felt so bad for galaraga.. look at the replay when he tags the base… the smile he had on his face…
he did it…
then boom
safe..
and everything became deflated… i dont even know how he threw another pitch
he doesnt have to explain it?
i always thought umps do…
like last year in the playoffs when there were some bad calls
i feel bad for galalraga
the guy had a big smile on his face and was abot to start celebrating….
the call deflated everything
the comment
was a facetious response to the oft-cited defense of why we don’t have instant replay. Again, no explanation as to why this doesn’t extend to home run calls.
I think with new ball parks and their configurations
Umpires don’t have the best view and they have cameras out there to cover those areas. Plus the ramifications of the call don’t affect the game, if its a HR, fine, if its a ground rule double or foul ball, fine. There isn’t much else it can be.
You start dealing with safe/out calls or strike calls, that is too hard to deal with.
we're going in circles here
but I think there have plenty of times that a bad call that affected a game, which could have been overturned very easily, altered things permanently- like game 2 ALDS Twins vs. Yanks last year, or today. I still remember when it was controversial in the NFL, just because it hadn’t been used before. Now, we can hardly imagine life without it during a football game.
Bottom line- use it sparringly, but use it.
But how else can you do it
You can’t watch both the ball and the feet of the runner and the first baseman at the same time.
first base ump has the best view
its his call.
i know i see that
but like what pitches does he throw… and velocity and stuff
The amazing thing about that game is that Galaragga had only 3 ks. That means he got 25 other consecutive outs. Thats just amazing babip luck.
I guarantee
all 4 umpires were hoping that there would be nothing like that play to end the game. They didn’t want a full count pitch or a line drive foul or fair or a safe/out call to end that game.
the Perfect game article on wikipedia
On June 2, 2010, Armando Galarraga of the Tigers gave up an infield single to Jason Donald of the Cleveland Indians. However, replays showed that Donald was out by at least one foot. The call was blown by Jim Joyce.
Wiki is wrong
He was out by three to four feet.
by The Dude Abides on Jun 2, 2010 8:04 PM PDT up reply actions
I hope this doesn’t force Joyce to shave that mustache in an effort to conceal his identity.
by Eric Stephen on Jun 2, 2010 6:11 PM PDT reply actions 1 recs
Oh man
On MLB Network they are even showing Joyce’s call in slow motion. This is becoming like the Zapruder film. :)
Looked like it
It looked to me like he say the ball rattling in Galarraga’s glove and decided that he was safe because of that (although on replay it seemed like AG had the ball controlled in time, barely)
i really wantt to hear his explanation for his call
maybe he thought galaragas foot was over the bag but did not step on it..
maybe he thought he bobbled the ball…
maybe he thought the runner really beat him…
i really want to know why he thought the runner was safe
i dont know why i wanna know but i really wanna know.. i was really pissed after i saw he fucked up the call…galaraga and cabera were already starting to celebrate…
seriosuly
maybe if donalds foot was over the base….
it wasnt even close
DAMN
Withrow with another uninspiring outing!
what hapened to training camp withrow 2 innings 6 Ks?

In my day, of course, we did not have the technology necessary for “instant replay.” We circumvented its need by hiring quality umpires.
by Tripon on Jun 2, 2010 6:21 PM PDT reply actions 1 recs
I give Donald credit
He could have just jogged to first but he busted down there to make it close play.
Galarraga might get a no hitter since the throw by Cabera was good, And it was Galarraga’s bobbling the ball that forced Joyce to rule it safe.
And Galarraga’s beat Donald by at least 3 steps to the bag.
Baseball should probably overturn the Donald hit to an error.
No way
If he had dropped the ball or obviously bobbled it, sure. Bur right now, it goes down as a hit.
It was the supposed bobbling of the ball that caused Joyce to rule it safe.
That’s some crazy catch 22 logic. Joyce ruled it a hit because Galarraga bobbled the ball, but it can’t be ruled an error because he didn’t obviously bobbled it? It was good enough for Joyce, why isn’t it good enough post game?
Old Hoss Radbourn, with another gem
on Twitter:
Guess what, Detroit fans? Umpire J. Joyce drives a Japanese car
BWV 1129 reports that Urban Bovine Knievel reports in The Lounge that Jim Leyland reports in his press conference that Jim Joyce reported to him on the field that Donald beat the throw.
I realize that
But it is obvious the guy didn’t beat the throw. My point was that I hope he just isn’t telling Leyland on the field “he beat the throw”. He isn’t even close to “beating the throw”. It can be argued that he may have bobbled the ball, but beating the throw is weak. IMO
Seems that's how twitter works too.
You all occupy a world dominated by Kobe Bryant, consider yourself fortunate.
This is my first post here
What game was Jim Joyce watching? Donald beat the throw? You kidding?

Oh good,
folk are still in the thread. JUST got back from the game, as I was trying it via public transportation for the first time, and good lord was that an adventure.
Also, what a game! It kept going, and going and going. The suspense was terrible and I’m so glad it lasted. Except for the sunburn on my left shoulder. Owwww! I was in the field section, unprotected, and I guess I missed a spot with the sunscreen.
Go Dodgers, look forward to going back tomorrow night : )

Joyce apologized to Galarraga, who is taking what has happened just about as well as humanly possible. He seems to be in a great mood right now.
He apologized
that seems strange.
Is this the NFL ref apologizing to the Chargers for blowing that call.
He did?
Well, that’s very un-umpire like… Can MLB possibly overturn this? Or is this the old “human error” argument?
Everyone needs to believe in something. I believe I'll have another beer.
Jim Joyce
“I just cost that kid a perfect game. I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay.”
“It was the biggest call of my career.”
On facing all the hostile Tigers players and fans:
“I don’t blame them a bit or anything that was said. I would’ve said it myself if I had been Galarraga. I would’ve been the first person in my face, and he never said a word to me.”
Now I feel horrible for Joyce
On second thought, nah… Just hope he gets out of Detroit safely… Not kidding…
Everyone needs to believe in something. I believe I'll have another beer.
I feel bad for the guy, my dad is a referee for Pac-10 football, and blown calls happen. Its not like they try to screw up, it is pretty big of him to come out and apologize like that, I wouldn’t have expected it.
Over at the Tigers blog
they are pissed off to the highest degree. Obviously the man botched up the “biggest call in his career,” but cut the guy some slack, he wasn’t doing it maliciously.
I understand it
I mean you could live with a clean single, you could curse an error or an walk but a bad ball by an umpire is just something that will eat at you.

What a classy guy Galarraga is.
He could’ve flipped out and gone Zambrano on the ump during the game and after during his interview, but he didn’t.
Schlichting knows what's up
from Ken Gurnick:
“It felt great out there,” said Schlichting, who made two appearances in a 2009 big league cameo before blowing out a disk in his back. “I think last year I was a little nervous coming out. I don’t know, this year just felt different, I just feel more relaxed and more calm out there which is a good thing to feel.”
The irony wasn’t lost on Schlichting, however, that the Dodgers’ bullpen is spent, and if a reliever is called up for Thursday night’s series opener with Atlanta, Schlichting could be the one sent down to make room.
“The same thing crossed my mind,” Schlichting admitted. “I mean, that would hurt, but if that’s the move that has to be made to help the team win, I’d understand.”

“growing up in Southern California I wanted to be a Dodger. . . "
wait, what?
I like Monk,
But he should be a long reliever on this team as currently constructed. We can’t really afford to do bullpen games with no days off for the next couple of weeks.
14 innings don't help.
Wasn’t it pointed out that assuming Padilla comes back on schedule there is only 1 more bullpen game? Also, it isn’t like our other options have been inspiring confidence in their ability to go longer than 5ip.
Beats 1 inning or not being able to get anyone out
(see: “Slacks”) He’ seemed a perfectly capable 5th starter to me. He can eat 5 or 6 innings and keep the team in the game. Not sure what more you expect from a spot starter.

Well his spot only comes up once more before June 18; I don’t think there is anything wrong with giving Monk one more start.
Right
but if Padilla isn’t healthy, that is when you plug in a more long-term (a few weeks to a month at least) option like Haeger, or whomever.
I'm calling it now
Kenley Jansen, in October, will be our K-Rod. This is the ULTIMATE trump card we have.
That Jim Joyce call was so easy..I think thats whats so bad about it..
I’d definitely be in favor of a challenge system where maybe each team gets to challenge 1 thing a nite.
Basketball has replay.
Football has replay.
Tennis has replay.
Whats the deal with baseball?
I’d rather spend an extra 5 minutes and get it right, than spend the rest of eternity lamenting something that was incorrect.
The difference
Is people already moan and complain about the length of baseball games. I wouldn’t be against a 1 challenge a night thing.
