Garret Anderson Joins Dodgers Walk-Off Brigade

Garret Anderson turned cheers into boos for one at-bat at least on Wednesday

Three games on the homestand; three walk-off wins.  The latest came in the 14th inning today, as the much-maligned Garret Anderson hit a single to center to bring home Matt Kemp with the only run of the game, giving the Dodgers the 1-0 win and another series sweep over Arizona.

Carlos Monasterios was very good; he did his job with five scoreless innings.  Edwin Jackson was great, throwing nine scoreless innings and 123 pitches to boot.  Arizona starting pitchers gave up two earned runs in 25 innings in this three-game series, but have no wins to show for it.

Travis Schlichting pitched the final four innings out of the bullpen for his first major league win.

The Dodgers held the Diamondbacks scoreless for the final 31 innings of the series.

The last time the Dodgers won back-to-back 1-0 games was July 28-29, 1984, against the Reds.

WP - Travis Schlichting (1-0):  4 IP, 3 hits, 1 walk, 1 strikeout

LP - Cesar Valdez (1-2):  1.2 IP, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 1 strikeout

Amazing job by Schlichting today.

Big time. Obviously the Dbacks cant seem to score off of anyone, but his 4 innings were above and beyond what anyone could ask for.

by UCLADodger32 on Jun 2, 2010 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess the Dodgers pitched better

Arizona allows
Two solo home runs.
A 2-run scoring double error
A balk driven run
2 singles that drove in runs.

7 runs, 5 earned in 31 2/3 innings and get swept.

by bhsportsguy on Jun 2, 2010 4:34 PM PDT reply actions

I blame the 6:10 start

After Billingsley gives up the solo HR to Snyder, no other Diamondback crossed home plate for 31 innings.

The Dodgers had 33 IP and 4 ER for a little more than 1 ERA.

At least for the next few weeks, yes.

Now it’s just a matter of whether Haeger’s rehab time starts over with his new toe injury, giving them another 30 days until they have to decide.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 2, 2010 4:41 PM PDT up reply actions

If his rehab starts go well

he can pitch for the Dodgers on June 18.

That would be the next time after Monday that the 5th spot is needed.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 2, 2010 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Is this injury for real?

When Haeger went on the DL, nobody seemed to think his injury was real.

He wasn’t impressive in rehab, and now he’s supposed to have another injury. Is this injury real, or is it an excuse for more time in the minors?

People don't think it be like this, but it do.

by MartinGreen on Jun 2, 2010 5:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Toe injury is real, yes.

The heel injury I would classify as a nagging injury that probably doesn’t warrant a DL trip, but is one of those convenient persistent types of injuries that allow for roster maneuverings.

by sarcastro9 on Jun 2, 2010 6:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I think with new ball parks and their configurations

Umpires don’t have the best view and they have cameras out there to cover those areas. Plus the ramifications of the call don’t affect the game, if its a HR, fine, if its a ground rule double or foul ball, fine. There isn’t much else it can be.

You start dealing with safe/out calls or strike calls, that is too hard to deal with.

by bhsportsguy on Jun 2, 2010 6:06 PM PDT up reply actions

we're going in circles here

but I think there have plenty of times that a bad call that affected a game, which could have been overturned very easily, altered things permanently- like game 2 ALDS Twins vs. Yanks last year, or today. I still remember when it was controversial in the NFL, just because it hadn’t been used before. Now, we can hardly imagine life without it during a football game.

Bottom line- use it sparringly, but use it.

by sarcastro9 on Jun 2, 2010 6:12 PM PDT up reply actions

by Tripon on Jun 2, 2010 6:05 PM PDT up reply actions

the umpire listens for the ball to go in the mitt while watching the bag.

by bhsportsguy on Jun 2, 2010 6:07 PM PDT up reply actions

That seems so imprecise.

by Tripon on Jun 2, 2010 6:13 PM PDT up reply actions

But how else can you do it

You can’t watch both the ball and the feet of the runner and the first baseman at the same time.

by bhsportsguy on Jun 2, 2010 6:15 PM PDT up reply actions

You can if you position yourself on the opposite side of the foul line. Or maybe there should be an umpire on both sides of 1st base. But you’re basically asking umpires to have 4 eyes in this situation, and its easy for a ump to miss this call.

by Tripon on Jun 2, 2010 6:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I give Donald credit

He could have just jogged to first but he busted down there to make it close play.

by bhsportsguy on Jun 2, 2010 6:23 PM PDT reply actions

Galarraga might get a no hitter since the throw by Cabera was good, And it was Galarraga’s bobbling the ball that forced Joyce to rule it safe.

And Galarraga’s beat Donald by at least 3 steps to the bag.

Baseball should probably overturn the Donald hit to an error.

by Tripon on Jun 2, 2010 6:24 PM PDT reply actions

No way

If he had dropped the ball or obviously bobbled it, sure. Bur right now, it goes down as a hit.

by bhsportsguy on Jun 2, 2010 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions

It was the supposed bobbling of the ball that caused Joyce to rule it safe.

That’s some crazy catch 22 logic. Joyce ruled it a hit because Galarraga bobbled the ball, but it can’t be ruled an error because he didn’t obviously bobbled it? It was good enough for Joyce, why isn’t it good enough post game?

by Tripon on Jun 2, 2010 6:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Another angle.

If Joyce was positioned anywhere else, he would have ruled an out.

by Tripon on Jun 2, 2010 6:26 PM PDT reply actions

When you freeze it, it doesn’t show the ball moving in his glove.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 2, 2010 6:26 PM PDT up reply actions

What is the written rule? He obviously has full position either way.

by Tripon on Jun 2, 2010 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Looked like he had control before the runners foot hit the bag.

by NotJoeTorre on Jun 2, 2010 6:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah I agree with that, and think he was out, but I also think that was the reason for the safe call

by Eric Stephen on Jun 2, 2010 6:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Possession, not position.

by Tripon on Jun 2, 2010 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions

He doesn’t have full possession if the ball is moving potentially out of his glove.

BWV 1129 reports that Urban Bovine Knievel reports in The Lounge that Jim Leyland reports in his press conference that Jim Joyce reported to him on the field that Donald beat the throw.

by Tripon on Jun 2, 2010 6:37 PM PDT reply actions

I realize that

But it is obvious the guy didn’t beat the throw. My point was that I hope he just isn’t telling Leyland on the field “he beat the throw”. He isn’t even close to “beating the throw”. It can be argued that he may have bobbled the ball, but beating the throw is weak. IMO

by keithc13 on Jun 2, 2010 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Schlichting knows what's up

from Ken Gurnick:

“It felt great out there,” said Schlichting, who made two appearances in a 2009 big league cameo before blowing out a disk in his back. “I think last year I was a little nervous coming out. I don’t know, this year just felt different, I just feel more relaxed and more calm out there which is a good thing to feel.”

The irony wasn’t lost on Schlichting, however, that the Dodgers’ bullpen is spent, and if a reliever is called up for Thursday night’s series opener with Atlanta, Schlichting could be the one sent down to make room.

“The same thing crossed my mind,” Schlichting admitted. “I mean, that would hurt, but if that’s the move that has to be made to help the team win, I’d understand.”

I like Monk,

But he should be a long reliever on this team as currently constructed. We can’t really afford to do bullpen games with no days off for the next couple of weeks.

by Tripon on Jun 2, 2010 7:36 PM PDT reply actions

14 innings don't help.

Wasn’t it pointed out that assuming Padilla comes back on schedule there is only 1 more bullpen game? Also, it isn’t like our other options have been inspiring confidence in their ability to go longer than 5ip.

by Tripon on Jun 2, 2010 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Beats 1 inning or not being able to get anyone out

(see: “Slacks”) He’ seemed a perfectly capable 5th starter to me. He can eat 5 or 6 innings and keep the team in the game. Not sure what more you expect from a spot starter.

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
