SB Nation Los Angeles
SB Nation is in the process of launching a series of regional sites, an exciting new venture for the company. To date, 15 of the 20 sites have launched and are live, including today's introduction of SB Nation Tampa Bay.
I have been tabbed as the Editor for SB Nation Los Angeles, and am joined by an impressive cast of contributors:
- Holly Anderson, who is the Associate Editor of EDSBS.com, contributing writer to DrSaturday.com, and contributor to SBNation.com
- Dexter Fishmore, co-manager of the World Chamption Silver, Screen and Roll blog
- Rev Halofan, the head honcho at Halos Heaven
- Rudy Kelly, who is one of the managers of the great hockey blog Battle of California, and who some of you may remember as a frequent commenter on Dodger Thoughts during the Baseball Toaster days
- Julio Nievas, a frequent commenter here, and also an editor at Conquest Chronicles
- Steve Perrin, the man in charge of ClipsNation, a favorite site of many True Blue LA readers (and writers!)
SB Nation Los Angeles is launching next Tuesday, June 29. There will be a launch party and meet-up as well:
5:00 - 8:00 PM
Capitol City Sports Grille
1615 N. Cahuenga Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90028
There will be complimentary well drinks and beer all evening, courtesy of our friends at Crown Royal Black.
If you plan to attend the launch party, please RSVP by using this link.
I look forward to seeing you all there.

I'll ask because I'm sure all of our readers will be wondering.
How does this effect TBLA and can the readers expect the same quality work you have provided them in the past?
Congratulations.
I was going to ask what beer would be available? Deschutes?
Just kidding. Eric, that is awesome. Congratulations, and I look forward to SB Los Angeles broadening my horizons beyond baseball

True
but how can Pedro not be the number one mistake. We know what he did, Scoscia as manager would be pure speculation on how he’d have effected the franchise. I think he knew his audience and threw them a bone.
Over the past decade
Vin, for him, has consistently been disturbed by Scioscia getting away from the Dodgers. Next to people forgetting D-Day, I’d say it’s his most frequent beef he’s ever expressed on air.
I really dislike the 24-hour waiting periods
after you sign up for a new SB Nation blog. I understand the point that they want to protect against trolls, but can’t they just wait to do waiting periods until the playoffs (or other emotion-packed moments in the season)?
That’s really the main reason, though. Dealing with trolls sucks, and having the waiting period pretty much eliminates them, especially the various spam types of accounts.
You could always send an email to the site owner, asking to accept your membership, and he or she might decide to waive the waiting period.

I see USC is covered
who is covering UCLA?
who is covering the High School Scene?
who is covering beach volleyball?
I wish somebody would cover high school sports. A legit blog that did that would be a lot of fun.
The Times had a blog for a while (Varsity Times Insider) but that was dismantled quickly as the LA Times usually does. Sondeheimer is really the only guy working that beat.

After looking at the Tampa site
I just realized not having a football team will hurt SB Nation Los Angeles. Pretty sure the football sites have more traffic then any other sport. On the plus side you have the World Champion Lakers. To put Clipper fans at ease you need to move Steve to page two, if he was on page one we’d freak out.
Wouldn’t want the tens of Clipper fans to feel unappreciated. :D

Nice interview
of ABQ broadcaster Robert Portnoy, by Jon Weisman on Dodger Thoughts:
8) Does Xavier Paul have anything left to prove in the minors? What is he working on?
No. He’s an everyday big leaguer waiting for his chance. He’s working on his defense constantly, looking to continue to improve in that area any way he can. His arm is unquestioned. Just in the last week, naive hitters have tried to stretch singles into doubles when he’s playing left and paid the price twice. Strong and accurate thrower. RF arm in LF when he plays there. When he keeps his focus in the field, he’s an above-average defensive OF. He has shown how he can hit when he’s been with the Dodgers this year. He is tearing up PCL pitching, and now he’s hitting for power, which adds the final piece.
Would a platoon of Paul/Hoffman
in RF next year be that bad?
Other teams do that stuff all the time. The Tigers have had a revolving door in LF for years.
by Michael White on Jun 23, 2010 9:22 AM PDT up reply actions
I think it would have the potential
to be above average. I’d rather have the RH guy have more punch like a Gomes but Hoffman might have his uses in that role.
I agree. I think Paul could do a nice job, maybe pair him with Johnson or someone like Xavier Nady. Wouldn’t that be something, an Xavier/Xavier platoon?
That’s at least 10-15 blog posts worth of awesome.

If the reports are true
that Torre and the Dodgers are going to part ways, I really hope they pick Wallach over Mattingly.
I plan to lead the campaign
I have really bad feelings about Mattingly as a manager. Some of it’s irrational, but I don’t think all of it is.
The man wouldn’t even shave his sideburns to management’s standards!!!!
by Eric Stephen on Jun 23, 2010 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
Honestly
the more I hear about Wallach, the more I think I’d like him to be the next Dodger Manager. I have nothing against Mattingly, but he’s never managed before, and wasn’t Wallach the Minor league manager of the year last year?
by Tommy Blackjack on Jun 23, 2010 9:38 AM PDT up reply actions
Ya know, it’s funny – I love Mattingly, but I’m not sure what kind of big league manager he would make. Heck, not sure what kind of manager at any level he could be, since we have nothing to go on. I won’t campaign against him, though. Maybe he could oversee the loss of every FA we have in two years, start the rebuilding process, then get canned and get another chance somewhere else.

Dee Gordon, SS, Los Angeles Dodgers/USA:
He’s off to a bad start, but Gordon did jump two levels this year, and he’s an exciting player to watch, someone to whom fans will be drawn if he reaches the big leagues. Marketing guys such as Gordon through the Futures Game is key to maximizing the value of the event.

SB Nation Los Angeles
Will this new site just be like an LA sports blog that aggregates all of the existing articles, fan posts, etc. into one site, or will content be written exclusively for SB Nation LA/
Both
There will be original content on the site, as well as links to the various team sites.
There won’t be game threads or things like that; those are for the team blogs.

That is ten times awesome
Now that’s a dog. He’s got a great name, a sunny disposition and c’mon, what a great name. Tugboat. Think of the possibilites: you can call him Tuggernaut when he gets all excited, you can make little “Toot toot” noises to call him inside, he’ll tear up a pillow while you’re gone and when you find the damage you’ll exclaim, “Damn you, Tugboat!” but then he’ll come up with that hangdog look and you’ll say, “Oh I can’t stay mad at you Tugboat. C’mon, wanna go lick peanut butter off my balls?” and he’ll bark and you’ll laugh and then the screen will freeze and the credits will roll. It’ll be awesome.

My digital Sony Walkman gets crystal clear FM. I don’t know how; there’s no antenna. I guess it’s built into the headphones or something.
by silverwidow on Jun 23, 2010 10:40 AM PDT up reply actions
I have no way to really confirm this, but I’ve heard that Sports Talk started on AM because it was coming on about the same time music really started moving over to FM, so it was cheaper to get started. As for sports on AM, its probably a throwback more than anything, since its been on AM since the beginning of time (baseball, anyway).
As for whats stronger, its a bit like digital vs standard over-the-air TV: digital is much better quality, but degrades faster, so it covers a smaller area. You don’t hear stories of FM stations being picked up from 1,000 miles away, but for AM (especially at night) thats no unusual feat.
Our ESPN Radio station in San Diego is on FM. The sound quality of live sporting events broadcast there is outstanding compared to the AM stations

I’ve been wanting to find a cheap AM radio to listen to games at work (streaming media gets blocked), and it turns out they’re pretty hard to find. An FM station would fix that. Why is KLOS going to do this, though? They figure no one listens to their station on Saturday nights or something? Strikes me as odd.
by TopDeckTrueBlue on Jun 23, 2010 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions
Saturday nights are actually pretty dead radio times. Was an old joke Ben Maller used to tell in his 1150 days that his first gig was 8-10pm and his first thought was, “wow, they really like me, they’re sticking me in prime time!”
Prime time for the radio is business hours, with peaks around “drive time” in the morning and early evening. By the time a typical baseball game comes on at 7pm, most people are home eating dinner or watching TV.
I’m not entirely sure how that translates to weekends, but given what the best times for radio are otherwise, I can only imagine Saturdays are even more dead then weekdays.
