USA versus Ghana Game Thread
With the first elimination game being on a Saturday, I felt a dedicated game thread on the front page was appropriate. These past few days after the Algeria win have been fantastic, let's see if the Americans can keep going.

And have been since the England-U.S. game. We won’t be the underdog again until Uruguay.

Sometimes I feel I comment more on the commercials than the game
oh well. That No Ordinary Family thing looks like it can be decent if they stay away from spelling out every emotion, and if the powers get the family into real trouble. Also, I wish they’d give a woman an active power for once, as much as I love Kitty Pryde, it’s time for more women like Lady Deathstrike.

Sloppy
There passing and footwork is really outclassed by Ghana. They are giving up the outside too much. Although, maybe that is tactical since the US midfield is giving up too much room in general.
Look for counter-strikes by the US for scoring opportunities today.
Just like every other game they've played in the WC :-)

It should be said at least that Bocanegra and for the most part DeMerit have been excellent in the WC
the problem is both communication lacking, the other guys with them (like Clark, on 2 different goals) and not being together the start of each game. But those guys have played well. Cherundolo has too. He hasn’t looked good today however.

I know very little about soccer, but it seems like it'd be more entertaining if they got rid of the offsides rule..
With that offsides rule, it makes scoring so difficult.
Its also hard to judge.
People want to see goals, not batting the back and forth for 90 minutes with no scoring.
If they did. One guy would just cherrypick the whole game.
It wouldn’t make it more fun. Somebody else would just sit with them. Alot of these offside calls are because defenses are built around that. They wouldn’t be giving up those chances if the rule was removed.
by Michael White on Jun 26, 2010 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions
As a soccer player I can tell ya there's a reason for it
(I also now play in smaller field leagues with no offsides, because it’s too small to fairly call it) But I will say that they sometimes need to be better about erring on the side of the offensive player. Which is what they’re told to do but don’t always. So they call off some good plays.

So I also wonder why Lady Gaga has any fans…
lol
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
bandwagon
is the most overused word in the sports fan lexicon

Yes
But it’s so fitting. No one even talked about soccer before the world cup. Or is it that people just care about the world cup, and not shitty US soccer?
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
Nobody?
Are you suggesting you have a feel for the pulse of America?
by Michael White on Jun 26, 2010 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm using Hyperbole
But I never saw any talk in here or from any friends and almost never on TV until 2 weeks ago or so.
I definitely do not have a feel for the pulse of America, I am basically stuck in the 70s with my style of music, the 50s with my dislike of most things illegal, though I still love today’s technology.
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
bandwagon
fans know nothing about the sport, and simply want to cheer for a winner. A bandwagon fan wouldn’t be dying over this result. A bandwagon fan would be barely cognizant of the rules of soccer.

I know nothing about soccer or te rules, but i'm watching this game...
I wont watch another soccer match until the next World Cup that the US is in.
That's evidence of, what exactly?
That’s like saying baseball ratings go down in Los Angeles once the Dodgers get eliminated
by Michael White on Jun 26, 2010 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions
well sorry kid
but there aren’t to many folk what watch minor league baseball just to check out a prospect.
Me for instance, no Dodgers, I’ll rarely watch

Im going to the Lancaster game on the 4th next weekend
I hope to see Martin or Eovaldi pitching.
Does that count as watching for a prospect?

this room is
not really the pulse of the average fan

How did the ratings for the final of the WBC do?
Did most US fans give a shit about Korea vs. Japan? Did that mean Americans don’t care about baseball, or that they are all bandwagon fans?

Gaah!
The amount of time-wasting in this OT is the kinda stuff that makes soccer skeptics that way. Ref and #USA need to speed it up.

What's the idea
Putting some baseball into a soccer thread?
People don't think it be like this, but it do.
I thank you very much for the baseball you are putting in here :)

Bradley should take some heat for starting Clark
Clark gave up the early goal and then a sub was wasted get him out of the game. The sub would have been valuable for extra time.
that would been in
had he gone to his back

Too bad
Not as good of a run as 2002. At least we didn’t have to stay up until 4 in the morning to watch the game.
:-(

Well, not really

Dunno. he mostly coached well and some of the mistakes are just on the players
but his lineup today was questionable. At least he corrected his mistakes. But it was a goof not being able to have another sub late.
There may be a few other people who could do better than he did but not easy to find those guys, and he’s solid enough. Stability can be good, too.

I think he stays, unless the U.S. team decides to sign a pricy International coach, and I doubt that happens.
Yeah I'd love to see Jürgen Klinsmann
come in after all, but other than that don’t see Bradley leaving.

Everyone thought we were suppose to lose to England.

Both Uruguay and US had same tendencies though, sloppy defense and some great striking attempts
Woulda been interesting at least. As all the US games were.

The US has gotten to a point where we can expect to win our group
that’s great. Americans really turned out for this cup, and I think facing England in the first match really helped that. We love going against England.
I’m at least happy that there is still an African nation in this tournament, and tomorrow I’ll be cheering (though not nearly as passionately) to the only CONCACAF team left in the tournament, my good friend Mexico.
And I’ll be in the Home Depot Center July 4th to welcome back Donovan.

today is just so depressing
USA loses
Now I have to apply to jobs that I won’t get hired for
and Yankees/Dodgers on Fox
Stop watching that crap. I turned the tv to Iron Chef which instantly made me feel better
Papaya for the win!

Another silver lining
the two draws and a win in World Cup play should help our World Ranking.
Ghana’s about to break through into the top 25 though
