Dodgers / Yankees Finale Chat, Part II
The Dodgers have had a nice mix of doubles by Reed Johnson, a home run by Belliard, bunts by everyone, and a pair of errant throws by Andy Pettitte, to lead 5-0 after four inning...

I haven’t thought it through all the way yet.
But what big budget AL team needs a DH next year? (None come to mind. Maybe the Mariners?)
And what OF can the Dodgers find who can hit? (I haven’t thought about it.)
One idea might be, Dodgers pay him one million in 2011, and defer another 9-ish million for a year or two. Manny gets to play in a town he likes, and the Dodgers get to conserve cash.
People don't think it be like this, but it do.

Like Troncoso. I hate the way Troncoso is pitching but when Broxton threw his first fastball at 93, Broxton just didn’t have it.
Jesus. Read what you just wrote. You just don’t like what happened, so you decide to just rip the manager for his decision making, even though in your comment you pretty much say you would make the same decision.

How much do we pay Sherrill.
I thought I heard yesterday Brox was down…then came in after fancy 1 batter Sherrill for the famous Torre 4 out save…only it wasn’t a save opportunity.
Just so unprofessional.
I hope Brox’s arm survives this.
Bingo. and if you do bring in Broxton for Jeter, dont let him pitch the 9th. you’re up by 5 runs and you dont need to stretch out your closer when he might be needed in a close game the next day
by UCLADodger32 on Jun 27, 2010 8:48 PM PDT up reply actions
This is less about Broxton and more that Torre doesn't trust anybody in his bullpen outside Kuo, Belisario and Broxton.
And that’s incredibly frustrating. You should be able to rely on almost anyone in the bullpen to protect a 4 run lead.
That’s like saying Kershaw needed to pitch all 9 innings and throw 140 pitches to do it. He can, but it’s going to have an effect on his arm.
Broxton needed to do the job on 25 pitches or less

You know what he was ticked about? The frickin pitches that Broxton threw that were called balls that were so obviously strikes even Joe Morgan questioned it. Then Rivera gets a bullshit strike that was even more out of zone than Broxton’s ball calls.
Same pattern last night. Rivera gets special treatment. And he’s too good to need it.

Hands tied
troncoso’s been so crappy, even though they have to use him here and we can all pray, we should understand why Torre was hesitant to bring him in in the 9th. Old Troncoso would’ve come in and gotten a DP there. New Troncoso is just as liable to give up a grand slam, alas.

That’s a failure on management then for not giving him pitchers the coaching staff wants to use. Its this I’m talking about. We can’t keep guys like Troncoso and Sherrill around if we’re going to abuse Broxton, Beliario and Kuo’s arms.
I agree
And they have some young arms who deserve a shot. Problem is they may need to come along slowly before Torre would trust them anyway.

I dont have a problem bringing in Broxton tonight. My problem is throwing him 1 1/3 yesterday up by 5 runs when you know he might be needed today. Broxton wasnt sharp tonight, which leads to him throwing a crapload of pitches and he will be out for at least the next 2 days. He probably should have been lifted sometime during that inning, but the question is for who.

I dont think you have any grasp about what we are complaining about. My issue isnt with using Broxton tonight. Its using him in a 5 run game yesterday and then not pulling him earlier after it was obvious he had nothing. and for record,I’ve wanted Sherrill DFAs since April.

Sherrill

In the 9th, Loney could touch the 1st and then throw the 2nd base?
What do you think?

how many times can he suck and still be on the team?
Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?
Kelly, I don't see the contradiction asking for Troncoso in the 9th considering how much Broxton was used.
Also, somebody needs to fix this fucking bullpen.
Calling up Jansen right now would help. That arms plays right now, especially considering the slop we have throwing for us

Is there anyone there
who will ask Torre:
1) Why did you use Broxton last night when you were leading 9-4 and tire him out, then call him in again leading 6-2?
2) Whatvdo you think of Girardi using his closer on a tied game on the road?
3) What is Ned doing abou getting you some relievers?
by berkowit28 on Jun 27, 2010 9:04 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
whys that?
lots of flashy numbers, melt like chocolate in a big spot
most closers shud be able to protect a 4 run lead,
you guys are being too kind
not at all.
even a tired closer shud be able to get out triple AAA players Hoffman, Curtis etc. with a 4 run lead. What is so hard to understand?
actually its quite good

I don't care if it is a strike. The umpire needs thicker skin. He's going to throw out all the Dodgers on strikeouts at this rate.
Pretty much anyone gets tossed for slamming their bat at home plate like that

So is a cutter just a fastball that cuts (duh) at the last moment?
What’s the difference between a cutter a 2-seamer?
Cutter is basically a slider grip thats thrown with the same wrist action as a fastball.

Just fix the bullpen. Fix the bullpen so that when the Dodgers have a 4 or 5 run lead in the 9th, it is okay to use somebody else than Broxton.
Other than calling up Jansen, theres not much else. I dont want Ned trading for any middle relievers having flukey years and giving up prospects to do so.

we went through this last year with Sherrill

Our bullpen was a lot better last year. troncoso, Belisario, McDonald, Broxton, and Sherrill were all quality options.
…Sherrill were all quality options
this is my point though. Sherrill was fine last year, yet now we want to get rid of him and we gave up a top 3B prospect. I don’t want to do that again

JMac needs to be recalled as soon as hes healthy and put in the pen. Adding Jansen, JMac and Schlicting would be a big boost in talent, and hopefully that talent will produce.

JMac is the only remaining SP option (once he becomes healthy.)

can’t keep switching him to relief and then back to starting. Schlicting seems good, i just wish Joe wasn’t so damn loyal to crappy veterans.

I know it wont, but we cant keep doing this with our bullpen. Broxton, Kuo and Beli cant throw every day, and overusing them now just puts us in a worse spot later in the year. Sherrill and Troncoso right now cant get anybody out and shouldnt be on the team.
by UCLADodger32 on Jun 27, 2010 9:24 PM PDT up reply actions

A team will lose some close games and lose some games by a lot, but to lose control of a game like this is a damn shame.
Just a terrible day
After this, you’d think Torre would think twice about using Broxton when we have a five run lead… On the other hand, Nah…
Sex addiction? Two words=get married.
Sort of a logical “crossroads” point in the season. Season closing in on the halfway point, fallen to 5 games back, team has struggled recently with 2 brutal losses, and interleague is over. Time to respond.
