MiLB Dodger Report 6/27 - Lemmerman doesn't need late night to shine

AAA –Isotopes were crushed 15 - 3 with Claudio Vargas doing his best to make sure he never pitches a major league inning for the Dodgers in 2010. Vargas gave up 7 runs in 2 2/3, Schlichting gave up four runs his two innings. Schlichting seems to pitch better in the major leagues then the minor leagues.

AA – Lookouts win 9 -5 behind Brent Leach and Kenley Jansen. Leach won his 2nd game in a row, going six inning, giving up only five hits. Jansen finished the game off in style striking out the only two hitters he faced. Jerry Sands is making AA look a little to easy, he had two more extra base hits including his 3rd home run in four AA games. Dee Gordon had two hits including a triple, to drive in two runs. Kyle Russell walked twice in four plate appearances.

High A –Inland Empire won a laugh-er 14 - 2 behind Will Savage who made his first start in the Cal League a good one. The offense was led by Van Slyke who banged out three hits, including a home run. Austin Gallagher chipped in three singles.

A –Postponed

Rookie Ogden – The Raptors were crushed 15 - 9 as Carlos Frias made his debut in 2010 a less then memorable one. He gave up 10 hits, and six runs in 1 1/3 of an inning. The offense was led by Lemmerman with four hits, and Garcia with three hits. Garcia hit his first home run of the year and now has 10 hits in his last five games. As hot as Garcia has been, Lemmerman is even hotter with 11 hits in his last four games.

Rookie Arizona –Four pitchers combined on a 7 - 0 shutout. Y Garcia started the game and went the first five, followed by Lima, Rodriguez, and Tavarez. 22 year old catcher, Andrew Edge paced the offense with two home runs.

How does Jon Garcia generate so much power? Hips?

by Julio Nievas on Jun 28, 2010 8:13 AM PDT reply actions

I've always taken those measurements

with a grain of salt since they follow them forever. He could weight 200 by 2012 and they would still have him listed at 5’11 / 180.

Holy fuck he looks powerful

Seriously though

Same way guys like Alfonso Soriano do. Strong wrists, efficient swings.

Same reason why guys like James Loney and Conor Jackson are huge but can’t hit the ball out.

garcia

glad to see him start off well, he could probably be one of the top “pure” hitters in our system.

I am so excited to see Sands doing so well

and to see Russell getting some walks.

Have to admit

after Sands hit a home run in his first at bat, then followed that with three K’s I felt he’d have a hard fall in the beginning. Unbelievable what he did this weekend jumping from the MWL to AA.

by meercatjohn on Jun 28, 2010 9:40 AM PDT up reply actions

crossing my fingers he's legit

we could have a decent offensive outfield after manny leaves with Sands-Kemp-Ethier and the X man doing 4th OFer duties.

by npurcell on Jun 28, 2010 10:09 AM PDT up reply actions

Don’t forget about Robinson, he probably has more claim to that spot right now than Sands.

I wonder how they view Lambo now.

by pdotmac1 on Jun 28, 2010 10:19 AM PDT up reply actions

Hopefully as a 1st baseman

I’m still puzzled how a lousy defensive left fielder is not being moved to his natural position, but a natural outfielder is being used at 1st base.

by meercatjohn on Jun 28, 2010 10:26 AM PDT up reply actions

My best guess to an answer on that is that they hoped Lambo would have a great start in AA, move to AAA and be ready to contend for the LF job in ST. They probably had no clue Sands would rise like this.

Plus they probably don’t want to limit him to 1B until they absolutely have to, but I agree he should get some time there.

by pdotmac1 on Jun 28, 2010 10:35 AM PDT up reply actions

Agree but

his trade stock goes up if he can handle the Of. The pot suspension didnt help his trade value

by Camronj on Jun 28, 2010 11:03 AM PDT up reply actions

If nothing else

It means we should be looking at at most a stop-gap in LF next year, knowing Sands could be ready in 2012.

by kinbote on Jun 28, 2010 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Not to discout what he's doing

But isn’t Low-A to AA easier than High-A to AA?

I mean, what made what he was doing at Low-A so amazing is that he was hitting all those homers in an average run environment, right?

by Chad Moriyama on Jun 28, 2010 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I've always thought of the Cal Leaue

as the offensive self esteem boosting league.

Just thought it funny that in one week he went from being old for his league and dominating to being age average and dominating.

by meercatjohn on Jun 28, 2010 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't kid yourself

it didn’t hurt it either. most of these execs were still around for the coked-out 70s.

In his first week in Double A

Jerry Sands won the Southern League player of the week for June 21-27

by Eric Stephen on Jun 28, 2010 11:41 AM PDT reply actions

So I guess the question is

Is it ok to get excited about him yet? I know it’s premature, but it’d be nice to focus on something positive for once.

On a side note, are there any AA leagues near Los Angeles? We tried to move all our minor league teams close to LA, yet we keep AA in Chatanooga. Any guess as to why?

by GScott1 on Jun 28, 2010 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Texas League would be the closest

we used to have an affiliate in San Antonio. The AA leagues are Eastern, Southern, Texas

I have no idea why they are not out West.

by meercatjohn on Jun 28, 2010 11:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Awesome

wonder what Keith Law thinks now. First response will be SSS.

by meercatjohn on Jun 28, 2010 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions

I don’t think he ever gave a real scouting report on Sands yet. He wasn’t on the national radar until this year.

by Tripon on Jun 28, 2010 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions

If I recall a month ago in a ESPN chat

He won’t notice him until he’s above A-ball.
If Sands continues to tear, he’ll be top 30 forsure.

by Julio Nievas on Jun 28, 2010 12:17 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s not true, Law keeps track of high drafteees and low-A players all the time.

by Tripon on Jun 28, 2010 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Lambo got to about 50 or so after his 2008 season, correct?

If Sands does better than that at 2 years older I could see him being in the same range, though Idk about any higher.

Jerry Sands is a monster

And I can’t really, seriously hope he is becoming a top prospect with us and could be up in the MLB by some time next year.

I want nothing more than to call him The Sandman :)

"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"

by Ivdown on Jun 28, 2010 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions

i know its pre mature but if Pericht

follows in the steps of sands and continues to hit and called up he could have a similar story. Obviously he has the intangibles but may need to find a new position. Its all premature but if he can move fast he can be of average age in AA at mid season. Time will tell if he can hit consistently though.

by Camronj on Jun 28, 2010 2:43 PM PDT up reply actions

If only Sands could catch or play 3B

If he did I have no doubt he would be a top 40 prospect right now.

"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"

by Ivdown on Jun 28, 2010 2:58 PM PDT up reply actions

well, if he was playing RF

more people would be paying attention. However, the Dodgers are still hoping that Lambo could somehow be ready to play LF next year. Therefore, they wont play Lambo at 1B until they are sure Lambo cant play LF in the majors, even if for only one year

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Jun 28, 2010 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Wouldn't matter

He’s the type where his bat is the most important thing.

Like Jesus Montero. He’s basically a DH, but he can rake. Carlos Santana too. Catching questionable, but the consensus was “who cares” because the bat would play anywhere.

by Chad Moriyama on Jun 28, 2010 3:49 PM PDT up reply actions

yea

but Sands seems like he will provide defensive value. Unlike Montero, who is a DH at 20, Sands could be a very good RF for a while, offensively and defensively.

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Jun 28, 2010 6:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I think you are going in the opposite direction

Sands defense is underrated in the sense that he’s not a 22 year old DH, but underrated doesn’t infer that he’s good, it infers that he’s underrated.

He’s capable of playing right in the bigs if he doesn’t slow down as he matures, but as far as providing plus defensive value in the bigs, i’ll believe it when I see it.

Right is a lot more defensively challenging than left as far as being above league average. Ask Andre Ethier.

Ethier didn’t get worse when he moved from left to right. Better athletes play right, that’s all.

by Chad Moriyama on Jun 28, 2010 6:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I should have said COULD provide SOME defensive value

I guess I think that if he gets too slow for RF, he could go to 1B where hit bat will still profile and he could be good defensively.
