Dodgers Activate Billingsley To Face Rival Giants

After winning just four of 15 games in interleague play this season, the Dodgers are happy to get back to the more familiar part of their schedule.  However, things don't get any easier as they face the second-place Giants.  The Dodgers are 11-13 this month, meaning they would need a sweep in San Francisco to have a winning June, something they had only once in the last six seasons.

Here is a look at the current records of the Dodgers' opponents in June, easily their toughest month on the schedule:

Dodgers June Opponents
Opponent Record Games
Yankees 47-28 3
Red Sox 46-31 3
Braves 44-32 4
Reds 42-34 3
Angels 43-35 6
Cardinals
41-34 3
Giants 40-34 3
D-Backs 30-46 2

Chad Billingsley returns from the disabled list tonight, making his first start since June 11.  He has made five previous career starts in San Francisco:

Chad Billingsley Career Starts in SF
Date IP H R ER BB K Game
9/13/09 6.0 4 0 0 3 2 LA 9-1
4/28/09 6.0 5 2 1 0 5 SF 5-4
8/10/08 6.0 9 3 3 3 6 SF 5-4
4/28/09 7.1 8 3 2 3 8 LA 5-3
9/13/09 4.0 8 3 3 0 6 SF 7-2
Totals 29.1 34 11 9 9 27 2.76 ERA

Barry Zito starts for the Giants, so a night off for James Loney is not a surprise.  Loney has one hit in 20 career at-bats against Zito, with six strikeouts.  This is the fifth straight game started by Zito against the Dodgers that Loney did not start.  The Dodgers are 9-12 in games started by left-handed pitchers this season.

If last night has taught me anything, it is that someone shouldn't be judged after a low point.  To get a full measure of someone's value, their complete body of work should be judged, their entire catalog, if you will.  With that in mind, we should all remember bearface for his long history of commenting here and on various other Dodger sites, and not the absolute garbage he wrote this morning.  Everyone is entitled to a bad day.

I was so focused on Kemp being benched that I didn’t notice Pat Burrell and Aubrey Huff are the corner outfielders tonight for the Giants. Wow!

Pat Burrell

That sucks…..

So you’re saying that you think we get smacked around tonight? I don’t really know. I think it is a high scoring game. Bills doesn’t pitch good, but not horrible either. We win 9-7

by keithc13 on Jun 28, 2010 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Who knows what will happen but given how jinxy I can be when seeing games in person

the fact that Ive seen Bills pitch twice vs Giants in SF and once he had control problems but otherwise pitched fine and another he shut them down completely, I am not as worried as you are.

1. It’s the Giants
2. Bills has been great since the Brewers
3. Bills is normally an above average-great pitcher
4. Bills is my 3rd favorite Dodger…Oh yeah.

Also I deleted one comment over on the Bearface fanpost

As much as you disagree with a post or comment calling someone a derogatory name for that opinion will not stand up. Only Eric can do that. Use your own blog to make your comment if you feel the need to go that route. As Eric notes, Bearface has earned the right to state his opinion, he is not some one time troller coming by to make trouble.

No but he'd be the first to do so with less then 10 starts.

Any way I don’t have a problem with him being added if at the time of the selection he’s still this awesome, but it seems bizarre to be talking about it after four starts. They were simply promoting him because of the TV schedule and the fact the all-star game is on Fox.

by Xeifrank on Jun 28, 2010 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions

In an attempt to cheer my self up I did some looking around on FanGraphs

I found a couple interesting things. The Dodgers pitching staff leads the NL in swinging strikes %. And the Dodgers hitters have the the lowest swinging strikes % in the NL. The Dodgers also lead in line drive rate. It seems the Dodgers are very patient (third lowest swinging % and fourth lowest out of zone swinging % in the NL). And are also the best in the NL at making contact. But the have almost no power (third fewest HR, they are third in doubles though) Would a more aggressive approach result in more power?

by Alex41592 on Jun 28, 2010 4:22 PM PDT reply actions

Meh, compared to last night. Nothing.

Gammons mentioned a ‘disconnect’ which was unfortunate because he’s an extraordinary player.

by Alex41592 on Jun 28, 2010 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, Kemp was supposed to given the whole night off, at least in theory. The only reason he later played was when GA got tossed.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 28, 2010 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't think that was true

seemed that Joe simply wanted Kemp to get full mental day off and was only forced to use him because GA got thrown out.

I've been thinking

The main reason Torre is on the team is to manage egos. He’s basically Manny insurance. But Manny isn’t going to be on the team next year.

So next year, the potential ego problems is likely going to be either Ethier and Kemp and they aren’t likely to fight with other teammates. I’m not a big Tim Wallach supporter (in the sense I have no idea how he would manage a team like the Dodgers), but this team won’t need Torre next year for his main job of smoothing egos. There’s no Kent, or Manny, or or Nomar on the team that Torre needs to contain in order for the team to function.

So what if Belisario is a dick again? He’s a middle reliever and that’s his role in life, he can be replaced.

Anyway, the point is that Torre’s biggest strength is likely going to be blunted anyway by next year’s team, so there’s a lesser reason to bring him back.

by Tripon on Jun 28, 2010 4:26 PM PDT reply actions

I think that is a myth

I’ve seen no indication that Torre even talks to his players on that level.

by 68elcamino427 on Jun 28, 2010 7:03 PM PDT up reply actions

The triall is reported to begin Aug. 30.
Torre stated he will make his intentions known by Sept., so the Dodgers aren’t left without a plan" or something to that effect.
Torre’s contract is up, and the Dodgers have not made him an offer for next year.
So will he be back?

Running the pitching staff into the ground notwithstanding, peering into future of Dodger ownership/offer Torre another contract is kinda hard to predict today?

Torre is currently the highest paid field manager in the MLB?
Is there a need for the Dodgers to lay out another rmega contract for a Manager?
Has the PR novelty worn off?

I've said it before and will say it again, Giants hatred of LA and Dodgers goes way beyond

what comes back at them from here. I mean I hate the Giants, but some of that is exacerbated more since I live in SF. When i lived in SoCal I didn’t feel much venom toward them. Only derision. But they go batshit insane about the Dodgers, as if LA fans were Nazis. Not the hat kind either.

Giants fans as a rule are haters

Was it Hershiser that said this about the rivalry? The Giants are concerned with beating the Dodgers. The Dodgers are concerned with winning a world series.

It comes from having a great team

in the 1960’s and always coming up short. Bearface complains about not being in the World Series, will the Giants haven’t won since 1950. That be a long long long long time ago.

by meercatjohn on Jun 28, 2010 5:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Yah that is indeed some of it.

Though the younger fans I know should be less impatient with that (at least they’ve been in a WS fairly recently). Maybe that got handed down from their parents.* Some of it is this weird city rivalry that makes SF seem all insecure. Like, who gives a crap, both SF and LA are great cities in their own ways. But they get so irrational it’s comical. And they do seem always concerned with hoping the Dodgers suck instead of just focusing on their own team. The hatred is unreal to me.

*I once saw a dad on the light rail here teaching his infant, just-learned-to-talk kid, to say “Beat LA! Beat LA!” Everyone thought that was cute, except me. Felt like teaching your kid to hate.

The whole organization preaches this hate

it bugs me that an organization, a business does that. At least at Dodger stadium, the organization isnt starting beat SF chants or Giants suck chants. When the organization also encourages such a response, its like saying its ok to be an asshole to other fans. I want to tell these people. sheesh what did I personally do to you to give me such shit

by meercatjohn on Jun 28, 2010 5:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Ned wanted to sign him to more than two years. Was that because he liked him? No. The longer and cheaper Kemp’s contract is the more valuable a trade commodity he is. Ned has considered Kemp a “problem child” since the Kent incident. But since his 2009 was so good, signing him for a couple of relatively cheap years was a no-brainer as long as he doesn’t completely tank.

I feel the same way. My two big complaints about sports journalism are that (1) they cover the drama surrounding a game instead of the game itself and (2) they go out of their way to create drama where little or none exist. In short, they are pigs. They will continue to overhype him until you either love him and want to watch or you hate him and want to see him fail. And they honestly don’t care which.

Well are they left to do

With the internet and tv coverage, most readers don’t need to know about the actual game action. The only thing they have any access to that most fans don’t is any personality issues or front office issues.

And frankly, they are not fans, they just want to write a story.

by bhsportsguy on Jun 28, 2010 6:12 PM PDT up reply actions

When I lived in Berkeley

it was explained to me how exactly the chain of progression works.

The A’s won a bunch of World Series’ but nobody showed up, they had those 800 in attendance games. So they have little man syndrome at all the attention the Giants get. A’s hate the Giants.

The Giants haven’t won a World Series yet, in San Francisco, so all their vitriol goes to their chief rival. Think about it. If your best memories are the years you spoiled the Dodger’s season, that’s where you focus your energy. The Giants hate the Dodgers.

The Dodgers have gone to a bunch of a World Series, beaten and lost to the A’s, beaten and lost to the Yankees, and our best memories are winning World Series’. The Dodgers hate not winning the World Series.

Sorta like the Yankees, but with less national coverage so with less of an ego about it. Anyway, the chain of progression goes up A’s → Giants → Dodgers but doesn’t go back down, at the same intensity.

Earned by MLB rules. But, if the double play is turned he gets out of it scoreless after the flyball. But, it wasn’t.

Yankees seems to be signing a lot of guys.

Broxton, Lincecum, Kershaw, Heyward, Wainright, and Strasburgh, all signing with the Yankees.

Anybody catch Bowa on TB TV?

He said Kemp is out because Torre is not happy with what he’s seeing. Also, Johnson earned another start after last night.

by Michael White on Jun 28, 2010 6:43 PM PDT reply actions

What?

Torre can see Garret Anderson’s amazing invisible value™ and not Kemp’s value?

by K3vo on Jun 28, 2010 6:46 PM PDT up reply actions

I totally forgot 'til now

Last night, Torre had way hot R. Johnson bunt over what’s his face with Garrett Anderson in the on deck circle. And all I could think is Torre is wasting this way hot hitters at bat, so GA can save the day? How likely is that? Reed couldn’t get the bunt down, grounded out, the GA was pulled back for Jamey Carroll.

So much I don’t understand about that series of events.

Look at that, he hit the f*cking bull! Guy gets a free steak!

by Josie Becker on Jun 28, 2010 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Larry Bowa is a jackass. I’m not going to miss him next year.

by Tripon on Jun 28, 2010 6:45 PM PDT up reply actions

1. What is TB TV?
2. Slow bat, weak swings, bad recognition – I could see why Torre doesn’t like seeing that. :(
3. There’s a reason Bowa never got another managing job. He wears on players in that role. As Torre’s junkyard dog – may be slightly effective.

Think Blue TV, the KCAL pregame show

by Eric Stephen on Jun 28, 2010 6:47 PM PDT up reply actions

1) Think Blue TV. Pregame Show on KCAL (Karros and that other dude.)
2) Sure
3) Bowa tried to hold back at first, but couldn’t help himself.

by Michael White on Jun 28, 2010 6:47 PM PDT up reply actions

At first

Bowa tried to say that Joe doesn’t consult with him about his lineup decisions. He then said its clear that Joe doesn’t like what he’s seeing.
