Ethier Closing In On All-Star Nod

There is growing distance between Andre Ethier and Jayson Werth in the race to start in the outfield at the All-Star Game.

Voting runs through Thursday at 8:59 p.m., but it is becoming likely that Andre Ethier will be a starting outfielder for the National League.  The latest vote totals were released today, and Ethier is firmly in third place, with a comfortable lead over Jason Werth and Matt Holliday.

National League All-Star OF Voting
Player Team Votes
Ryan Braun Mil 2,262,663
Jason Heyward Atl 2,205,534
Andre Ethier LA 2,113,048
Jayson Werth Phi 1,623,802
Matt Holliday StL 1,540,986
Shane Victorino Phi 1,517,594

Heyward was just placed on the disabled list by the Braves, and is expected miss the game.  All-Star rosters will be announced on Sunday on TBS.

SB Nation Los Angeles is now live, and I look forward to meeting you at tonight's launch party at Capitol City Sports Grille.  We will be watching the game from there, and blogging from there as well.  It should be fun, with Matt Kemp back in the lineup and Ely Mania on the mound.

Both Jonathan Broxton and Hong-Chih Kuo are unlikely to pitch tonight, and Ronald Belisario has pitched in each of the last two games, so a save situation tonight could get tricky.

Ethier has 18 hits in 33 at-bats against Matt Cain, tonight's starter for the Giants.  Either has a double and a triple in 38 plate appearances, and is hitting .545/.553/.636 against Cain.

Mike Petriello of Mike Scioscias Tragic Illnesss breaks down George Sherrill's struggles this season, including the rather astonishing fact that Sherrill hasn't struck out a batter since May 17, a span of 30 batters faced.

I'm also totally ok

with Weaver closing. I’m really pleased with how he’s been doing this season.

by Maddz on Jun 29, 2010 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes to this.

I’ve actually been wondering why Weaver hasn’t gotten a shot as the fill-in starter. Unless he’s totally lost the ability to go five innings, he’s a guy who has started before and who has turned in decent results this year.

People don't think it be like this, but it do.

by MartinGreen on Jun 29, 2010 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions

We were about to let him walk too. Other teams offered him a guaranteed contract but he wanted to stay close.

by Tripon on Jun 29, 2010 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions

After Broxton, Kuo and Belisario

it does get pretty messy in the bullpen. Those 3 guys have the 3 best x-FIP’s on the team and all are under 4 (most of the starters are also under 4.) Weaver is the next best with an x-FIP of 4.50 right in front of Troncoso’s 4.56. One’s been lucky on the year, the other hasn’t.

by Michael White on Jun 29, 2010 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions

speaking along the lines of Weaver

I just recently read that Mark Prior is going to hold a tryout for teams. If this guy has anything left, I wonder if he could resurrect his career in a Weaver type role.

Justin Miller needs to get some love

he’s been solid.
http://www.fangraphs.com/winss.aspx?team=Dodgers&pos=all&stats=rel&qual=0&type=1&season=2010&month=0

And believe it or not, the 3rd best FIP for relief pitchers belongs to one Charlie Haeger.

Eventually he’ll get to the acceptance stage.

by silverwidow on Jun 29, 2010 2:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I know he’s been DFA, I’m saying he would be a decent option to eat up relief options.

by Tripon on Jun 29, 2010 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Also, I was offering up Heager as a joke. He’s going to be my default option.

by Tripon on Jun 29, 2010 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Not sure what that means

If you say “eating up” as though the only criteria is to keep pitching, then almost anybody in the Dodgers organization could do that. If you mean give solid relief apperances, his performance on the year doesn’t speak to that.

by Michael White on Jun 29, 2010 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Basically mop up man, or when we need multiple innings.

And based on extremely SSS, Heager has pitched well in relief.

by Tripon on Jun 29, 2010 2:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, basing on how bad he pitched this season on a .370 is also SSS.

by Tripon on Jun 29, 2010 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions

My point is that Heager hasn’t gotten enough of a sample size to say he was smoked.

by Tripon on Jun 29, 2010 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Lifetime stats

ERA FIP x-FIP
6.40 / 5.86 / 5.42 in 83 innings

by Michael White on Jun 29, 2010 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions

83 innings is still extremely small, especially if he’s supposed to be a starter.

His updated ZIPS this year is 5.77(ERA) 5.08(FIP).

Still pretty crappy, but a guy that people here actually like, Carlos Monasterios has an ERA of 3.88, FIP of 5.76, x-FIP of 5.49 in 46.1 innings and his Updated ZIPs project him to 4.92(ERA) 5.66 (FIP)

by Tripon on Jun 29, 2010 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree about Monk.

It’s funny, I actually think a healthy JMac is better than Haeger, Monk and Ely.

by Michael White on Jun 29, 2010 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think

that is debatable. Maybe with Ely it is. Jimmy Mac is going to be a big help in the 2nd half even if it is only in the bullpen.

Reanimation is great. Meteora, not so much. They really grew up on the last album — Minutes to Midnight. I would listen to it, it’s much more standard rock n roll than Hybrid Theory or Meteora were.

I was talking to my dad about this

but I think that for some bands, you need to listen to them at the right time of your development to really appreciate them. As such, you’ll miss the boat on some artists. For example, I am a classically trained musician, more than a little bit angry and angsty, yet I cannot really stand Tool at all. I think I was just too young to like them, and now they just annoy me.

Doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate their musicality but. :)

I'll buy that

There are a ton of bands who I love more or less only their first CD. I think some of it is simply I like that under produced sound for some bads, and once they get resources they sound to slick to me or something, idk.

My dad likes more lo-fi singer songwriter stuff. He likes unique voices. And he can’t understand why in the hell I would like Muse because he can’t stand the operatic-stadium rock they do. I guess he grew up disliking Queen. I had to explain to him that people I knew liked all old rock — Zepplin and Queen — and didn’t have specific allegiances either way.

I didn’t get into “rock” music, as such, for a long time because I was listening to pop and rap for dance and jazz and classical for band reasons. Totally different now, though I definitely trend towards a more poppy sound.

I just wanted to add a comment after watching Strasburg pitch last night against Hudson.

He is a wonderful pitcher with all the talent in the world but it made me think hard when they started putting stat comparisons up. Two of those guys that he was close to in initial start stats were Kerry Wood and Mark Prior. I hope he doesn’t turn out like them but what if his arm gives out?

I think it has a lot more to do with your biological makeup (tendon strength, etc.)

than a manager does. Lots of pitchers are overworked or underworked however you see it philosophically.

truthfully

I don’t know anything about Baker supposedly ruining his starting pitchers. Just usually when I hear people talking about how Kerry Wood and Mark Prior both lost promising careers to injury, I hear Baker’s name brought up as overusing him.

Billingsley has mentioned numerous times on his high pitch counts in

bochy and sabean are morons

bochy is easily distracted by bright shiny objects… burrell has a few good games after 2 years of suck and he’s their everyday left fielder right off the scrap heap. posey could be playing in place of burrell, renteria OR molina and is better than all 3…. not to mention pandouche right now, but he’s had a bad couple weeks so he’s on the bench

molina might be the worst player in the major leagues right now, he has the plate discipline of a drunk guy playing video games

we complain about torre but at least he knows how to fill out a lineup card…

If I notice anything at the game I'll let y'all know

Going to try to get there early to watch batting practice. If I notice any trashcan shuffling, will report back!

And as I wrote on DT too, far as I’m concerned this seems to make it LESS likely Kemp is on the trading block. If they’re really trying to trade him, why sit him, cut out his playing time, make a firestorm, etc. I don’t think he’s going anywhere. They may be using firestorm to light fire under him, give him a break to work on things, who knows. I just hope whatever it is, disciplinary, attitude, something, is worked out and he’s back on the field where he belongs.

But I do care, and what’s going on right now, I feel like if I play better, we definitely have more ground on where we’re at right now. And we’re still in it, still close. Kemp riding pine for 3 games seems pointless

yes, he’s slumping. He’s being benched for 1 of 2 reasons. (unless there’s a secret injury, which is doubtful):
1) Mgmt thinks he can benefit from extra rest. There is zero evidence that extra rest or “change of perspective” is beneficial to slumping hitters.
2) it’s punitive- this suggest mgmt thinks Kemp is playing poorly because he’s lazy, unmotivated, not listening to coaches. With just enough punishment then Kemp will be out there “playing the game the right way.”
I hate playing psychic reader to Dodger mgmt, but these perspectives seem pretty silly.

Jay Marriotti has taken sub duties for Mason and Ireland (subbing for Mason), and he already is on the anti-Matt Kemp bandwagon. Saying that Jeff Kent was right and that Kemp needs to hustle.

I find this ironic since Kent was known as an anti hustler, a guy who will not dive if he knows he cannot catch the ball. Stats such as UZR, and +/- will bore this out. Anyway, I just find it odd that a city like L.A. would want Marriotti comment on the L.A> sport scene. He’s has no idea what L.A. is about.
