8th Inning Rally falls Short; Dodgers fall to Braves

The Dodgers again struggled at the plate for most of the contest as the Braves took the opening game of a 4 game set 4-3.  The Dodgers were completely shut down early in the contest by youngster Kris Medlen who kept the Dodgers hitters off balance all night.  Medlen was recently pushed into the starting rotation due to an injury to Jair Jurrgens, and the scouting report on Medlen was that he struggled as his pitch count got higher. Medlen was brilliant through 7.0 innings, yet the Dodgers were able to string together (some fairly lucky) hits in the 8th. James Loney and Blake DeWitt got on base with infield singles and Jamey Carroll followed up with a seeing eye single to load the bases.  Bobby Cox liftted Medlen for Peter Moylan who proceeded to surrender a ground ball single to pinch hitter Ronnie Belliard which scored two runs thanks to a throwing error by Jason Heyward and a brilliant slide by Blake DeWitt.  Rafael Furcal followed up with a fielders choice which scored Carroll and the Dodgers were suddenly within 1 run at 4-3.  After walking Matt Kemp, Cox brought in the LOOGY Eric O'Flaherty who struck out Andre Ethier which ended the rally.

Old friend Takashi Saito came in to start the 9th inning and was 1 strike away from recording his first save of the year.  After going 0-2 to Russell Martin, Saito pulled up lame and had to be removed.  Jonny Venters came in and recorded the ever rare 1 strike save.

Hiroki Kuroda hardly had a bounce back game tonight.  While Kuroda wasn't nearly as brutal as he had been the game prior, but he was hardly sharp. Kuroda surrendered all 4 runs in his 6.0 innings of work.  While Kuroda might have been getting squeezed a bit, he walked 4 and was punished by throwing "get over" pitches during hitting counts, including a solo homerun which was crushed by Troy Glaus

Kuroda was lifted after the 6th inning and Joe Torre called for Jeff Weaver to come out of the bullpen. Weaver did not throw a pitch as he had some sort of injury which compelled the Dodgers to pull him.  No word yet if the injury is serious, but if it requires a DL trip, hopefully Travis Schlichting didn't yet board a flight for Albuquerque.  Justin Miller came in and worked 2 innings in relief followed by Ronald Belisario who pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

WP - Kris Medlen (3-1):  7.2 IP, 6 hits, 4 strikeouts, 3 runs, 2 earned

LP -  Hiroki Kuroda (5-4):  6.0 IP, 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned runs, 4 walks

S-  Jonny Venters (1): 0.1 IP, 1 strike out

I’ve watched the replay of that slide by DeWitt several times now. That’s one of the best slides I’ve ever seen.

The hit by Belliard

reminded me of the TBLA pennant winning game, when Belliard broke the stalemate with a pinch hit single.

Would anyone like

to see Kemp move down in the lineup, to say 6th? I would for a couple of games. I would like to see Martin hit 2nd, i know he sucks now but was doing okay at the top while Furcal was out, and move Bison down to 6th. Especially with Beard out. Gives us some pop down there and maybe will take some pressure off him.

I wouldn't do that

Kemp may be struggling, but Martin is worse. In May, Martin had a OBP of .322 compared to Kemp at .355.

Not me

I love a pop+speed guy hitting #2.

I've decided I dislike having too many walk off wins

because that usually means you were losing or not winning by that point. This offense has to pick it up. Dre at least looks like he is getting his timing back

I found myself actually pulling for Saito a little at the end there. I always liked the guy and was pretty bummed to see him leave the game hurt.

I was worried he was going to get booed by the DS crowd. Seemed like there werent enough people there to get a critical mass going.

It was pretty quiet by the end. Apparently there was some other sporting event going on that people were interested in.

I hope the injury isn’t that serious. Hate to see that happen.

UCLA guys are exempt

Speaking of UCLA guys

Per Rotowire:

Chase Utley (2B) PHI 6/4/2010
Utley went 4-for-35 on the Phillies’ nine-game road trip and his .270 batting average is the lowest it has been after June 1 since 2004, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. When asked if there is something specific he needs to work on, Utley said: “Try to find more holes.” The numbers seem to back Utley up as his BABIP is only .270 and his career average is .321 indicating he’s been quite unlucky thus far. Another encouraging sign is that Utley has shown a better eye at the plate this season with a 1.10 BB:K ratio which is higher than the .80 mark he had last season. “I can’t wait to see him when he comes out [of the slump],” manager Charlie Manuel said.

Kemp was on the Ryan Seacrest morning show this morning

Nothing too earth shattering, considering its a pop culture show, most of the questions focused on Rihanna. They did ask him about a nickname. At first he said he didn’t have one, and then he acknowledged the Bison nickname.

by Michael White on Jun 4, 2010 7:35 AM PDT reply actions

Yeah, I heard that was going to happen this morning

and Seacrest was like “We’re gonna talk about Matt Kemp and how he’s having a great year!”

I was like, “…by what standard? Because he’s bonaging Rihanna?”

May not be "great"

But .277 / .340 / .505 / .845 from a CF is pretty darn good. (Although the defense needs to continue to improve.)

I wonder if he doesn't immediately react to that question with The Bison answer

because players don’t use it.

I didn't chime in last night

Because we were getting tooled by the change up/slider. But to repeat what has been said 1 million times, Dewitts slide was awesome! Even though we had won 4 in a row, the offense stinks right now. Zero run production infill late in the game. I guess better late than never. Is Manny showing his age, causean he’s struggling at the plate lately. I hope he comes around. Let’s take it to the braves early tonight. Big Dodger win!!!!!!
