From Twitter

I learned Dejesus had 3 hits for ABQ; and Aaron Miller gave up 3 in the 1st inning, but later retired at least 10 in a row and the game was 3-2 in the 5th

John Wooden - Vin Scully

i hope I’m not being redundant here but with the passing of the great John Wooden I started to think of our beloved Vin. Sure Vin is up there in years and I’m not afraid of his passing on soon but I am concerned with how much longer THE MAN wants to continue to be the best baseball announcer ever. So the last few years I have been savoring every game OUR HERO announces.

I love Vin Scully. There I said it!

I believe Gurnee and I are about the same age so if Phil grew up in So. Cal and his parents were Dodger fans I’m sure, like me, he had the pleasure of listening to THE MASTER on the radio for many years. We’re spoiled, aren’t we? Remember when Jerry Doggett would spell Vin? UGH!!!

When cable came around I got the opportunity to see baseball games in other cities a la WGN, TBS, and the NY Mets channel that escapes me. I already knew Vin was the best but until I was subjected to the inferior (and sometimes incompetent) announcers I appreciated Vin that much more. Notice he is the only baseball announcer capable of being solo and not needing an “analyst” or two.

Selfishly, I hope Vin sticks around. Three cheers to Vin Scully!

by RoyaleWithCheeze on Jun 4, 2010 9:26 PM PDT reply actions

My grandmother adored Vinny

so when i moved here in 1970 he was always on since we lived with them the first summer. It was great summer, everyone on the street were Dodger fans, I was already a huge fan even though I’d never lived here. Dodger baseball will never be the same without Vinny. Long time Laker fans know what I mean.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

By being an honest homer. If the team was playing like crap, he’d flat out say they look like a steaming pile… not many homers would do that, and not many announcers would be allowed to anymore.

If I could change one rule in baseball, it would be this:

Inherited runners in scoring position get charged to the previous pitcher. Inherited runners at 1st base who score are charged to the new pitcher.

This just seems more fair to me. So Kershaw only gives up 2 ER under my system. :)

by silverwidow on Jun 4, 2010 9:52 PM PDT reply actions

I disagree; the pitcher who went out put the runners on and therefore should pay the price.

However, I strongly feel that ERA for relievers is a bullshit stat (yeah, i know, it’s a bullshit stat for all pitchers), and more focus should be on inherited runners scored as a good measure of reliever effectiveness.

by KellyStephen on Jun 4, 2010 9:54 PM PDT up reply actions

but once the runner has been moved by someone that wasn’t the original pitcher, ie from 1st to 3rd, his fate has been changed without input from the original pitcher.

Look at that, he hit the f*cking bull! Guy gets a free steak!

by Josie Becker on Jun 4, 2010 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions

How about this?

Like what happened tonight.. First and Second, two out, 3-2 count, the runners are on the move, and there is a ground rule double where it is obvious the first base runner is going to score with ease has to go back to third.

I understand the rule in non 3-2, 2 out situations but when a runner can almost walk home if the ball stays in the field of play should be able to score.
