Dodger MiLB Update 6/4/10 - DeJesus shakes off the rust.
AAA – Cody White made his first AAA start a victorious one, collecting his 2nd win. He wasn't dazzling but he went 5.1 innings for his longest stint of the season. George Sherrill pitched 2/3 of an inning, giving up one hit with one strikeout. Ivan DeJesus seems to have finally shaken off the rust after missing all of last year, and is on a tear. He collected three more hits last night including a two run home run. It was his 2nd straight three hit game giving him 16 hits in has last ten games along with three walks. Included in those 16 hits are two doubles and two homers. Ten game TSL for DeJesus is .410/.452/.615. Would love to know how he's doing defensively at 2nd base. Jamie Hoffman collected two more hits raising his average to .325. Scott Elbert made an appearance as a pinch hitter and flied out.
AA –Just how far away is Kenley Jansen from the major leagues? He won his third game with two more hit-less innings. He now has 18 K's in 10 innings in AA. He may not make it until Sept but Jansen could be a factor if we make the playoffs if he is able to impress in Sept. Dee Gordon collected his third triple of the year. That was his first XBH in his last 25 at bats. While DeJesus has been on fire Dee Gordon has a TSL over his last ten games of .214/.233/.357 for a lofty OPS of .590. Scott Van Slyke hit his 3rd home run. I think it had been over a month since he last hit a home run.
High A - Kyle Russell hit his 16th home run continuing to mash the California League. We need to get to a game before he's gone. Austin Gallagher had two more singles. Repeat and rinse.
A - The best player in the MidWest League is not Jerry Sands, it is 18 year old Mike Trout who came into the game with 17 hits in his last nine games and a lofty .366 average. The game only went five innings but Mike Trout was retired all three times by our Matt McGill Magill. McGill Magill picked up his 2nd win by giving up only two runs in five innings. Jamie Ortiz hit his fourth home run.

management is pissing me off.. more. I heard somewhere(maybe here) that they are going to keep them down until their ASB…

I still have the same concern with DeJesus.
I didn’t care he was hitting .200 or whatever because the BABIP wasn’t going to stay there, but his calling card was his plate discipline and where the fuck has that gone all of a sudden.
His BABIP
in April was .282 so that is not why he sucked. I was a little surprised to see his 2008 season was fueled by a .380 BABIP, not sure if I’d forgotten that, or missed it.

I think you know by now
That BABIP is more individual than league regressive. For him, .282 was low and especially for that environment.

I guess he figured if Gordon
can move him off SS with no plate discipline, then fuck it, swing away.
Curious that the great plate discipline prospects like LaRoche didn’t really pan out. They traded the two prospects Bell and Santana who did have great plate discipline. Wonder what the minor league hitting instructors teach after watching Hoffman and DeJesus both regress heavily in that area.?

Ready now?
Plus-plus arm, add revamped superior mechanics which results in much better control=Effective now
That slider comes around and it’s over.
As Silver Widow said
he could be our Frankie Rod in the playoffs if he keeps on coming.

I have read what Jansen throws
but have forgotten. Can yo give a brief synopsis of his pitches and speeds?
Thanks Phil
From the BA Handbook:
Fastball sits at 95 mph, max 98 mph
Slider w/two plane break peaks at 82 mph
Stuff described as “electric”

Someday you will need to deal with students who have
mental blocks like these. For some reason McGill is etched in my brain for the wrong guy.

Can you say something about Dodgers’ farmhand Jerry Sands? He’s having a huge season in A-Ball but he’s 23 or 24 years old. Can he make it to the bigs?
Klaw
(2:01 PM)
He’s in low-A. Way too old for his stats to have any meaning whatsoever.
I don't think he'll ever be able to hit .300 in the bigs
nor will he hit more than 5 HR’s in a season (Prado had 11 last year). I also think that De Jesus’ best position is going to end up being 2nd base.

Have you seen Prado's slug% when he was in the minors?
at much older ages. I disagree with your assessment. Five home runs as a ceiling? Ever?
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I didn't spend any time looking at Prado's minor league numbers
but i’m just not very high on De Jesus period. I’m don’t even think he’ll ever be a starter at the big league level, which is one of the reasons why I don’t think he’ll ever hit .300 or have more than 5 homers in a season

Okay, I can see that argument
but when I look around at who does start at 2nd base for some teams, I’m not sure I buy into it. Heck we are playing Blake DeWitt and DeJesus should be able to match that and provide above average defense.

Kyle Russell deserves respect
The problem is that he won’t get it from everyone else until he gets it from his organization and the fans of his organization.
The dude can flat out hit, regardless of age and level. He should already be up to AA, and people should realize how good he actually is. I don’t know what position he normally plays, but he was in CF tonight. This guy should be recognized as a legit prospect, but because of his age and his strikeouts (64 ks to 32 walks) people just don’t give a shit…it’s truly frustrating.
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
At his age
He doesn’t deserve a huge amount of respect until he hits at AA. Same with Sands.
Dunno.
I mean everybody shit all over Andrew Lambo for failing at AA at 20, but these guys are like three years older tearing up A-ball. If Lambo was at high-A in 2009, he would have shit on the league too.
by Chad Moriyama on Jun 7, 2010 2:11 AM PDT up reply actions
Lambo was our top offensive prospect
Sands barely made anyone’s top 20.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I Listed Sands #15....
…in the Maple Street Press Dodger publication. Baseball America ranked him #25, way below #18 Alfredo Silverio.:)
And wouldn't you agree
that given his age he is still right around that range until he can prove he can do this in AA?
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
And by this
I don’t mean what he’s doing in A ball but being a productive hitter in AA.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
No, Sands Should Be Better Than #15 Now
At age 22 Sands should be in high A, but Ryan Howard, Jason Bay, Brad Hawpe, and Hunter Pence all played in low A as 22-year-olds, and Sands’ numbers are better than their low A numbers.
Why should that factor when evaluating prospects as potential major leaguers?
by Chad Moriyama on Jun 7, 2010 7:41 AM PDT up reply actions
Just saying
expectations for Lambo were sky high headed into 2009 after his brief fling with AA in 2008. So when he didn’t produce at an elite level, people were disappointed. When you are carrying the mantle of the best hitting prospect, expectations are higher.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Is there a certain age we aren’t allowed to think people are worth playing in the MLB? At his pace he could be MLB ready by the end of next season or beginning of 2 seasons from now. But because of his age you are saying his stats mean nothing. Why don’t we actually wait to see if he flops against better competition rather than say he’s a nothing prospect now.
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
Where did I say he's a nothing prospect now?
I’m saying you can’t vault him past guys like Lambo and it’s funny what perception does. Give Lambo until 2012 and stick him in high-A and if he’s not suspended again, I bet he would OPS over 1.000 too.
They just don’t deserve that type of respect until they hit in AA because of huge question marks in their game regardless of what they are doing in A-ball.

Your boy sounds like he's getting promoted
now let us see what he can do against advanced pitching, in a tougher pitching environment.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I'm rooting for him.
nothing against Canuck, but I’d love for him to be big time wrong even though he’s probably right.
