Draft Day Open Thread

Aaron-miller-front_medium

I'm not going to be able to host this party but if anyone feels so inclined feel free to step up to the plate.

Here is a link to our brother blog at SB Nation mlbbonusbaby.

They will have extensive information on the draft, and they have given us permission to cut and paste the profiles of our players as they get drafted. They also have an incredible draft kit available for 775 players for $9.99.

You can watch the MLB.com draft coverage live online here.

So get geeked up and four years from now we shall see if we had any reason to be excited.

Michael Foltynewicz, RHP

He looks interesting. Strong, athletic frame, throws mid-90s and changeup is already 2nd best pitch (which is rare).

Callis (BA) and Keith Law (ESPN.com) mock drafts

Callis changed his projection today
28. DODGERS. Ownership didn’t like to spend on the draft even before Frank and Jamie McCourt became embroiled in a bitter divorce. Los Angeles will adhere to MLB’s bonus guidelines and choose between several high schoolers: Florida righthander A.J. Cole, Foltynewicz, Texas righty Tyrell Jenkins and Washington outfielder Drew Vettleson.
PROJECTED PICK: Drew Vettleson.

Previous two mock drafts had the Dodgers taking Cole, first Mock draft on May 14th had the Dodgers taking Justin O’Connor (who is now projected to go much earlier).

Keith Law’s projections – latest Mock Draft was today
4th Mock Draft – Kaleb Cowart SS – Caleb County HS – Georgia
3rd Mock Draft – Drew Vettleson OF
2nd Mock Draft – Brett EibnerOF/RHP Arkansas
1st Mock Draft – Stetson Allie RHP St. Edwards HS – Ohio

ethier and jd comps for vettleson

pure hitter, very good eye for a prep hitter, couple develop power.

While I like Ethier as a hitter (even before the power), I’d rather take a 1 way player with some power. Any good power hitting 3b?

One historical note

Since Logan White has been in charge of the draft, only 6 players drafted in the top ten have not signed. Of these, Hochevar was the highest pick. Seth Blair was one of the other top 5 picks not to sign (Blair is projected to go 3rd-5th round on Tuesday).

Now, also, it must be said that generally, every club signs their first ten picks.

Keith Law’s latest mock draft has Wilson going at 22 with a note that the thought is he is currently leaning toward signing.

by bhsportsguy on Jun 7, 2010 8:45 AM PDT reply actions

Sorry, two errors, 7 picks not signed in Top Ten picks since 2002

that should be Kyle Blair (Seth is the ASU pitcher)

Top 10 picks not signing
2002 – 9th round – Denver Kitch, SS
2003 – 3rd round – Cory Van Allen, LHP
2005 – 1st Supplemental – Luke Hochevar, RHP, 9th Round – Michael Davitt, RHP
2006 – 10th round – Andy D’Alessio 1B
2007 – 5th round – Kyle Blair RHP
2008 – 10th round – Chris Joyce, LHP

If you’re going to take him, why not take one of the flurry of plus armed high school pitchers? Oh right, can’t, they want money.

If they take Vettleson, they are settling to me. A sweet swinging right fielder with limited pop is not exactly screaming first rounder at me.

by Chad Moriyama on Jun 7, 2010 9:27 AM PDT up reply actions

To you it might not

but to the dodgers it very well might. Their scouting approach has always been drafting pure hitters high in hops the power develops later. James Loney, Blake Dewitt… Not until the 3rd+ rounds do they take chances on current plus power hitters (russell, kemp, bell, pedroza, etc etc).

I have not seen anything that indicates that those high school pitchers in the mix around their pick

Not discounting your charms

Stadium club has a big bar in it, or you can eat there. If you want to eat there, you would have needed to make reservations already to get seats that you can actually see the game at. Buffet style, pretty good food $35? a plate. It’s not that good anymore since they removed the windows. Cold.

WAIT WAIT WAIT

28. Los Angeles Dodgers: The financial instability with the Dodgers’ ownership means the team will play it exceptionally safe with this pick, looking for someone they are sure will sign for slot with little hassle. With those limitations, the Dodgers are thinking safe talent-wise as well, looking at a number of college talents. Workman projects as a reliever for many due to his mechanics and a fringy changeup, but his fastball and curve are both easy plus pitches, and could get him through the minors in short order.

Pick: Brandon Workman, RHP, Texas

OK, good old Nick Green

Just suppose that Casey Blake has to go on the DL. Even backtracked to the injury, it would be another 10-12 days or so before he could come back. Just supposing they really, truly wanted to bring Nick Green, rather than Hu, up for those 10-12 days, “buying his contract”. Then they’d have to go through the whole rigmarole of DFA’ing Green and clearing waivers yet again before being able to hire him again at ABQ? Or do you get a pass for clearing waivers for a little while if you just did it 12 days earlier?

by berkowit28 on Jun 7, 2010 10:23 AM PDT reply actions

If they purchase Green’s contract again, they would have to do the same (DFA, waivers, offer minor league assignment) process over again to remove him from the active roster.

Deshields

for what it’s worth, Seiler really likes Deshields; saying if he had to choose between austin wilson and deshields, he would go with deshields because ceilings are comparable and he wouldn’t hamstring you for the rest of the draft.

How often are there instances where the son is better than the father at the MLB level? Cal Ripken, Bonds, Griffey, maybe Fielder… I guess I answered my own question while typing.

Wasn't each Boone

better then previous one, if you don’t factor in PED’s. The Bell’s. Seems the fringe father, has fringe sons, but the starting father has some good sons. Would make an interesting story. Seemed to me at one time that a good % of American born black ballplayers were related in some way to someone who had played professional sports. Kemp and Loney being exceptions, while McDonald being the norm.

I'm really impressed

with those of you who put the time and effort into knowing so much about these high school and college baseball players. And I am happy for you that you gain so much joy from the baseball draft. But for me, even though I am a huge baseball fan, I can’t get the least bit excited for the draft. It’s of course very important, but I can’t get excited for a draft where someone who gets drafted in the 34th round becomes one of the best players in the game and where almost all of these players you don’t see them in the big leagues for years if at all. In the NBA and NFL, you get instant exposure to these players at the top level right away. Yes, there are the occasional Mike Leake, Stephen Strasburg, Bryce Harper types, but wake me up when the Dodgers can pick them. The MLB draft is on the same level of interest for me as College football recruiting news. Important but uninteresting.

but seriously, I know what you mean, the baseball draft is so lengthy and such a crap shoot, it’s hard to track and follow all the rounds and players even knowing how important it is. but still fun, and as noted above, the Dodgers have hit it big with some of their top picks in recent years. Kershaw, Bills, and of course BDW is contributing, and Kemp was an early round pick… etc. Anyway, I’m sorry in between your feeling and those who have the time to be more obsessed, but definitely want to follow it to see how the Dodgers do.

by underdog on Jun 7, 2010 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions

In many ways

the NBA draft is somewhat the same given the nature of the league. Sure you have your Tim Duncans and LeBron James but generally, (as evidenced by the Clippers), teams that try to build themselves through the draft just don’t do well because very few will have that kind of huge impact.

As for the NFL, I think actually, that is a lot like college recruiting talk and somewhat again hard for me to get excited about because one, no local team and two, outside the skill guys and qbs, its hard to project what someone is going to do.

by bhsportsguy on Jun 7, 2010 12:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Pre-draft buzz: Dodgers at No. 28
June, 7, 2010

PM ET

By Keith Law

I’m hearing from multiple sources that the Los Angeles Dodgers have a specific, strong interest for their pick at No. 28.

Canadian catcher Kellin Deglan is the possible choice. I don’t expect him to get much further than that, as No. 34 to the Toronto Blue Jays is probably his floor — but I hadn’t heard the Dodgers linked to Deglan before. The next-strongest name there right now is Drew Vettleson, who may be emerging as the New York Yankees’ top target at No. 32.

I just heard from the MLB people that when the Bryce Harper pick is announced, he’s going to be announced as an "outfielder.‘’ It’s at his request (or his adviser, Scott Boras’s request). This is not a case of Bud Selig freelancing at the microphone.

Watching UCLA’s baseball success is making me ill. They are really well suited for this type of tourney play as well.

by oshea2002 on Jun 7, 2010 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions

The pitching is just sick. And just imagine if we had Heyward……drool.

by UCLADodger32 on Jun 7, 2010 4:19 PM PDT up reply actions

by oshea2002 on Jun 7, 2010 4:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Dont know about the SC guys, but Heyward really might have gone to school. I heard from some people that if he didnt go to the Braves, he was gonna be a Bruin. Who knows if thats true, but it would have been crazy.

I dont know how likely it was for the other 3 (dont think there was any way for Moustakas and Beckham.)

by UCLADodger32 on Jun 7, 2010 4:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Moustakas came down to the wire, but I never expected any of them to actually step foot on campus.

by oshea2002 on Jun 7, 2010 4:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Really? I would think Stanton would have been the most likely because just because of his draft position.

by UCLADodger32 on Jun 7, 2010 4:26 PM PDT up reply actions

True. I remember there being buzz though early that he’d end up signing though. Just one of them would have been nice. In reality, all these guys made the right move IMO. You can always go back to school, tab picked up by the team that took you.

by oshea2002 on Jun 7, 2010 4:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Of course. I would always advise kids to sign if you get a decent bonus. Theres just a lot of downside, especially for pitchers. Not complaining about Cole coming to school, but its a definite risk.

Here is what Andy Seiler of MLB Bonus Baby said about Simpson

His draft kit does have 775 players FYI:

Hayden Simpson is a hard-throwing small-college right-handed starting pitcher from Southern Arkansas.
Simpson originally came to Southern Arkansas from Magnolia High School in Magnolia, Arkansas, a small
southwestern Arkansas town near the borders of Oklahoma and Texas. He was a fairly unknown
prospect coming out of high school due to his smaller frame, and he wasn’t carrying the type of stuff he
has today. He went undrafted in the 2007 draft, heading to pitch at Southern Arkansas. After a pair of
decent years, he really took a big step forward this spring, showing advanced stuff and pitchability, as
well as successful numbers of a good Division 2 team. Scouts think he has the natural stuff to be a
number three starter or setup man, but a few scouts can’t get past his size, which is generously listed at
six feet. He’s still skinny and short, but he has enough raw stuff to influence a game. His fastball is a plus
pitch, sitting 92-94, touching 96, and that’s not just in short bursts. He holds his velocity fairly well
throughout games, and he’s able to reach back for something more late in a game. He also throws in an
above-average curveball with some good velocity behind it, as well as a fringe-average changeup, so the
biggest concern behind his size is his ability to get pro left-handed hitters out, though Simpson has
shown enough in college to think he can handle them just fine. He’s expected to be picked in the fourth
to seventh round range, where he should be signable for slot or average money

by silverwidow on Jun 7, 2010 5:46 PM PDT reply actions

BA's take on Cowart

The Angels are the perfect team to gamble on Georgia prep two-way star Kaleb Cowart. They have three picks in the first round and they can roll the dice on Cowart. They also can send him out to hit and see if he makes it that way, and if he doesn’t, they can always put him back on the mound. The scouting consensus in Georgia had him as a first-round pitcher and a second-round hitter.

The Angels will have to work to sign him, and he’ll be tough to wrangle away from Florida State. He had a reported $3 million price tag that was fairly public knowledge most of the spring. Also, the Angels have had as much trouble as any organization of late in signing top picks. This is in no way a done deal.

by bhsportsguy on Jun 7, 2010 5:47 PM PDT reply actions

Sure

and his draft demands are fairly well known, enough that he was only on 1st round mock draft. So we will see if they can get him to the fold right away. But if it is for $3M, MLB will not want him to sign until August.
