Was all the buzz that year

Him making a run at Maris’ record, and if he’d even get the chance to break it with the strike looming.

by EMDarrow on Jun 8, 2010 9:47 AM PDT up reply actions

Both were in the high 30s

Finished with 38/39. Neither was really close enough to consider a real threat. Bagwell and Kirby Puckett were both racking up massive RBI totals that year though. Both finished on a pace that would’ve given them something like 160+ at the end of the year.

by EMDarrow on Jun 8, 2010 9:52 AM PDT up reply actions

Bagwell’s 94 is one of the most insane seasons ever. Numbers over a full season:

1.201 OPS (213 OPS+)
55 HR
163 RBI
12.2 WAR (10th best ever)

There’s almost no way he would have kept that up over a full season, but that year is still way under appreciated.

by regfairfield on Jun 8, 2010 9:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Hell, the only guys to ever put up a 12.2 WAR are Ruth, Bonds, Mantle, and Yaz. When Bagwell gets screwed out of the Hall of Fame it’s going to be way worse than any Jim Rice election.

by regfairfield on Jun 8, 2010 10:00 AM PDT up reply actions

Bagwell deserves nothing but a first ballot entry into the HOF

He is one of the 5 best 1b to play this game. He deserves to be in first try.

That being said, he probably won’t be.

"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"

by Ivdown on Jun 8, 2010 10:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Bagwell is definitely undervalued

and it even goes beyond the crazy insane stats he put up. The fact that he put those numbers up playing the majority of his career home games in the Astrodome just makes it even crazier.

There really was nothing he didn’t do well, and many things he did better than all but a small handfull, but his body broke down at a fairly young age, so his career counting stats don’t even come close to telling what a beast he was from ’91 to ’01. The worst OPS+ he had in that span was 139, and that includes six seasons of 150+ (five straight, only broken up by a 148, and includes a 213 in ’94).

Just in-fucking-sane.

by EMDarrow on Jun 8, 2010 10:36 AM PDT up reply actions

I just looked at the numbers

The offensive numbers that year were insane. Griffey also had 40 hr. Gwynn was hitting .394 (already knew this, though). Just wow, what a crazy year. I wonder what baseball would be like if the 94 season had been completed. The Expos might still be around, who knows.

"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"

by Ivdown on Jun 8, 2010 10:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes, they might. That was the greatest missed opportunity for them. (Signed, a Montrealer)

by berkowit28 on Jun 8, 2010 10:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Expos would likely still be around

The Marlins may well be a much better baseball draw (though it could well be the drop-off they had after the strike had as much to do with the new factor of the franchise wearing off), but there could well have been bad as well. For example, its hard to say what affect not having the strike would’ve had on the whole steroids issue… it may well have preserved enough good will for the sport to keep it buried and ignored for much longer.

year’s prep class offer, his projectability is up there with almost everyone not named A.J. Cole. Currently,
he offers three quality pitches that could turn into plus offerings with time and maturity. His fastball is a
solid 88-91 mph pitch with average life most of the time, but at the lower end of that range, he can put
some serious sink into it. With his downhill plane, he could turn into a power groundball pitcher, every
scout’s dream. His breaking ball is a curveball that can loosen up and get slurvy sometimes, and some
scouts have labeled it a true slider, but at its best it can be a sharp above-average to plus pitch in the 75-
78 mph range. He throws a better changeup than most pitchers his age, and it could be another aboveaverage
offering. It’s usually in the 81-84 mph range when it’s at its best. Add in the fact that Cash is
athletic and features excellent mechanics, and you have yourself a bit of a sleeper. He could go in the
fifth to tenth round, but a team could absolutely get a steal there, as Cash has middle of the rotation
potential. With a Georgia commitment, his signability is questionable in that range, though, so the
Bulldogs could get a potential impact starter if things land right for them.

Leon Landry is an athletic outfielder from Louisiana State University. Landry originally came to LSU from
Baker High School in Baker, Louisiana as a third baseman, but he’s been an outfielder ever since he
arrived on campus from the small town just 15 miles north of Baton Rouge. He was a solid prospect in
high school, and he could have gone in the top dozen rounds had it not been for his commitment to the
nearby Tigers. The Reds spent a late-round flier on him anyway, but there was never any intention of
giving him his bonus demands. He was a starter as a freshman, and he struggled most of the way,
though he showed his plus athleticism at times. He improved as a sophomore, but was pushed to the
bench near the end of the year on a talented team that ended up winning the College World Series. He
has reestablished value as a junior with a solid year, though, and scouts see him as a potential solid
starting center fielder at the next level. At the plate, he’s a solid-average hitter with average power, and
he’s an above-average runner with good baserunning instincts. He plays the game hard, and there’s
hope that he can become an above-average defender in center field, though his arm is well belowaverage.
He needs to continue to work on refining his solid tools at the pro level, and he’s not a sure
thing by any stretch of the imagination, but he’s shown solid year-to-year improvement, and that can be
expected to continue at the next level. He could go anywhere from rounds two to four on talent, and
he’s expected to sign something in the neighborhood of a slot bonus.

One Landry Scouting Report

from this week

LINK

Perhaps most importantly, Landry’s improved conditioning shows up in his speed. He was a 60 runner on the Cape. He’s a 70 runner now. His first step is better and he’s accelerating much better. He got thrown out trying to steal second base in a Friday game, but that was because he didn’t get a secondary lead. The speed improvement is most exciting to me as a scout, because now I can see a guy with the money tools shaping into form: hit, speed, power and defense.

From BA - Re Landry

Leon Landry, of

Louisiana State

Landry was a regular on Louisiana State’s 2008 College World Series club as a freshman, but he lost his starting job midway through 2009. After helping the Tigers win the national title as a part-timer, he starred in the Cape Cod League, hitting .364 with wood bats. Landry profiles as a potential four-tool center fielder. He’s having his best college season to date, reflecting a more mature approach at the plate. He no longer sells out for power and pulls off pitches, and he’s doing a much better job of controlling the strike zone. A 5-foot-11, 195-pound lefthanded batter, he projects as a possible .275 hitter with 15 homers in the big leagues. He has slightly above-average speed and keen defensive instincts that allow him to play center field. If he can’t stick in center as a pro, his below-average arm would dictate a move to left field, which in turn would put more pressure on his bat.

by bhsportsguy on Jun 8, 2010 10:15 AM PDT reply actions

Another bit from that Baseball Beginnings Article

which is interesting:

After watching two LSU games, I came away with the impression that Landry isn’t used correctly. He batted in the bottom half of the lineup both times. This is a complete mismanagement of Landry’s tools. He will not be a back third hitter in a major league lineup in the early years of his career. He should be a top-third hitter because he has four tools: hit ability, power, center field defense, and run speed.

Reader Pat Hickey nailed this on Twitter – I wish I’d worded it like this – that we can’t condemn the pick until we know their intentions. I talked to a senior exec with another club who said in his mind there was “no question” the Dodgers were punting the pick. But we probably won’t know till August 15th.

Well it depends on what you mean

I agree with Nate that it has more to do with having depth that can be used either for the parent club or for trades.

But in terms of a specific player being drafted for that purpose, no that is why the rule was put in place that you cannot trade any draft picks for a year.

by bhsportsguy on Jun 8, 2010 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions

Draft picks? Not that I'm aware of

Theres some pretty strict rules on trading draftees, something like you can’t until the year after they’re drafted. That and the fact that it takes so long for a draftee to be ready, its virtually impossible to draft to need, unless its a need in organizational depth.

Baldwin

Elon recruit James Baldwin III is the son of the former big league pitcher, James Baldwin Jr., who was drafted by the White Sox out of the same high school (Pinecrest) in the fourth round in 1990. The father threw more than 1,300 major league innings over 11 seasons, and now serves as the Pinecrest pitching coach. The son has also worked as a righthanded pitcher but is a prospect as an outfielder, with athleticism that stands out in this year’s high school class. His bat is raw because he was both a football and basketball standout as well during his prep career, and he’ll be a safer pick coming out of school in three years unless a team buys into his big league bloodlines.

since when is the original James Baldwin considered a great bloodline? Max Venerable has a father who played baseball but I’d hardly say he has a “great bloodline”. Bobby Bonds was a bloodline. Baldwin is more of a platelet. Good for many things but missing the key ingredient.

Austin Wilson: I was a huge Griffey, Jr. guy, just the way he played baseball – he was one of my idols growing up. Right now I’d say Pujols for his ability to be that good and have that presence on the field – I mean, he scares the pitcher when he’s on deck and I respect that to the utmost degree. Regarding outfielders, even though he’s having trouble right now, Matt Kemp is a guy I look up to because he’s a big guy like me and can still move around. Can I ask the prospect guys a question?

Let’s take one of the conspiracy theory scenarios. Let’s say the Dodgers really did feel that this year’s class was a weak pool, and rather than take a slot-signable guy in the first round, they thought, well, let’s take a flier on a guy we might not be able to sign but is a phenomenal talent, and if we don’t get him, we get that pick back next year, when the talent will be better.

What do you think — is that reasonable or is it insane? Is it better to get the best players you can (and can sign), regardless of the level of talent available, or is it better to try to work the system in the way the conspiracy theory describes?

The Ultimate Ned's Kind of Guy

but a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. It’s hard to forecast a year down the line and it might be better to get a guy into your system now then to wait another year.

from seiler
Kevin Gausman Position: RHP School: Grandview HS State: CO Height: 6’4’’ Weight: 185
Birth Date: 1/6/91 Seiler Rating: 1B1 Commitment: LSU
Kevin Gausman is an elite right-handed pitcher from Grandview High School in Aurora, Colorado, an
eastern suburb of Denver. Gausman has flashed frontline stuff, and though he doesn’t necessarily
project as a true number one starter, he could easily be labeled a good number two starter that will
consistently take the ball every five days for a number of years using a projectable, durable body. He
already uses a pro pitch mix that includes two variants of a fastball, two breaking balls, as well as a
specialized changeup grip. Those five offerings should be devastating when having him with wood bats.
To start, his four-seam fastball is a plus pitch with late, explosive life when it is down in the zone, and it
can sit 93-95, touching 97. That has been considerably down this spring, though, and he’s mainly pitched
in the 90-92 range. Many scouts, however, prefer his nasty two-seamer, an 89-92 mph pitch that bores
in on right-handed hitters. It’s also a plus pitch, giving him a plus offering with his fastball whether he
needs a groundout or strikeout. His curveball is the more advanced breaking ball, and it gets aboveaverage
future grades fairly consistently as a low-70s offering, consistently sitting 70-73 with late break.
His slider is rated highly by some scouts, but quite low by others, depending on the day they saw him.
He struggles to repeat his mechanics on the pitch, sitting 78-81, the higher side being the better side in
terms of break. It gets fringe-average to average future grades, though some are very bullish on it. His
changeup has good fade and gets future average grades, giving him an excellent assortment that is first
round caliber stuff. He should go anywhere from the back end of the first round to the third round, but
his LSU commitment will give him plenty of leverage to get a top 10-15 signing bonus.

I understand the point of doing this in the sixth round. Hell, it’s the sixth round. Try it — sign him, you got a steal; fail, it doesn’t cost much.

But they’re also accused of doing that in the first round, and while I’ll keep an open mind, based on Nate’s thoughts, that seems a lot riskier to me.

OT- But funny if you hate Notre Dame

Rookie WR Golden Tate was caught trespassing inside a Top Pot donut shop in Bellevue, Washington at 3:00 a.m. Saturday morning, according to TMZ.com.

Profootballtalk.com confirms the report. Tate and a friend apparently got the munchies after hitting the bar scene. The only problem was that the donut shop was closed while they were scarfing down breakfast. Tate managed to escape arrest, receiving a “trespass warning” instead. While he should also avoid league discipline, he won’t be so fortunate when it comes to rookie hazing at training camp.

Wilson is the type of gritty college middle infielder who’ll get plaudits for being a real “ballplayer.” He knows how to play the game the right way and, despite some deficiencies in his game, always finds a way to get the job done. The type who plays above his tools, he wasn’t performing with the bat the way he had previously in his Alabama career. That might hurt him come Draft time some, though there are always teams interested in advanced infielders who have the kind of attitude Wilson has.

Multiple first round drafts

I understand how the Compensation rounds work, where teams seem to get drafts to compensate them both for 1) former team free agents offered arbitration and refusing it and for 2) draftees from the previous year who chose not to sign. (The second type seems also to account for Compensation rounds later than first round – e.g. some drafted in 3rd round last year not signed results in a compensation round after 3rd round the following year).

But how do teams get multiple first-round draft picks? Do they trade for those specifically ? E.g. send a top playre to another team for a lesser player and that team’s forst-round pick? Or what’s the mechansim?

The Angels had 5 first-round picks – 3 in the real first round plus two compensation 1st-round picks. I gather they got those last two from FA’s who refused arbitration. But how did they get the the 3 real 1st-round picks? According to the LA Times, they got 18th, 29th and 30th overall picks. As a playoff team, their own pick must have been 29th or 30th. Where’s that 18th pick come from and the other one? Did they trade for, or buy those from two other teams? Are there rules or limitations on what’s allowed? I seem to recall that teams in the bottom half, who hold overall picks 1 through 15, can’t sell those spots. Is that right?

by berkowit28 on Jun 8, 2010 12:58 PM PDT reply actions

can’t trade picks. Compensation for last free agents, type A,B etc…think Figgy and Lackey.

by megaballs on Jun 8, 2010 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Type A free agents bring two picks…first round pick of the new team (unless they are in the top 15, then it’s second round), and a supplemental (newly created) pick.

by Eric Stephen on Jun 8, 2010 1:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe a "punt" is our cost...oh well

I for one don’t have trouble reaching for the sky. This Lee kid has top 5 skills and if he want $s this year and the chance to play with Texan Kershaw, this is the only place for him.
I hate mediocrity when we are perennial contenders for the WS.

Maybe this is the cost of putting up with the bad economy and the McCourts. This so called punt. It wouldn’t be the last time a kid chose college over big league baseball. I’m more pissed about the other stuff (Santana, no arb, few$ spent on drafts…the general fiscal discipline coinciding with expensive divorces and right when we go to back to back NLCSs)…

I am confident in Logan White’s abilities in all rounds and feel we are lucky to have him still here. So many first rounders have gotten cash and gone nowhere near the bigs.

joc pederson from seiler
Joc Pederson Position: OF School: Palo Alto HS State: CA Height: 6’1’’ Weight: 185
Bats: L Throws: R Birth Date: 4/21/92 Seiler Rating: 2C2 Commitment: USC
Joc Pederson is a toolsy high school outfielder from Palo Alto High School in Palo Alto, California, the
Northern California town that is connected with Stanford University. Pederson is simply a player that
can do it all, and scouts praise his makeup and work ethic. He’s been a name on the lips of scouts for a
couple years, but it has only been in the last ten months that he’s really seen notoriety for his skills, as
more national scouts have gotten to see him. He’s not going to blow you away with anything he does
incredibly well, but he’s well-rounded, especially for a prep bat, and scouts appreciate the type of game
he brings to the table. He projects to be a potential starting right fielder at the Major League level with
some work on refining his tools, and he should be a solid draft pick. At the plate, he’s a solid-average
hitter with a slight chance for more, as he has a good sense of how to hit. He barrels balls well, and
scouts believe it’s only a matter of time before he’s spraying balls around the field. He adds in average
power, but it’s not game power quite yet, which may take some time. He’s an above-average to plus
runner, and he uses that better in games than he does his power. Defensively, he’s an above-average
defender for right field, and he has a solid-average arm, making him a solid overall prospect without a
single tool that rates below-average. He’s expected to go somewhere in the third to sixth round range,
and he should be signable away from USC for a pick there.

Would LeBron James be willing to play for the Los Angeles Clippers if Donald Sterling no longer owned the team? Billionaire entertainment mogul David Geffen wants to find out.

A source close to the situation confirmed reports that Geffen is interested in purchasing a majority share of the Clippers — and that the long-shot attempt to convince Sterling to cede operating control of the team is among the reasons James and close friend Maverick Carter were in Los Angeles over the weekend.

by Tripon on Jun 8, 2010 1:06 PM PDT reply actions

I’m doing my best over at the Clippers site to tell people:

1) Sterling is not selling
2) Even if he was, a deal would not get done by the July 1st FA deadline.

kirkland profile from seiler
Matt Kirkland is a powerful third baseman from South Doyle High School in Knoxville, Tennessee, the
same school that fellow Draft Notebook prospects Bryce Brentz and Cody Hawn attended. Kirkland is
rated more highly than either was in high school, and even though his draft stock is well behind that of
Brentz this year, he has the tools to possibly have a better long-term career. However, he has to
maximize his tools to do so, which is no guarantee. He’s a solid hitting prospect with the tools to
become a starting third baseman at the Major League level, and that type of prospect is rare to find at
the high school level these days. At the plate, he’s an average hitter with plus raw power, and while he’s
advanced in terms of pitch recognition for a prep, there are a few holes in his swing that he needs to
take care of before he can hit quality velocity and breaking balls. He’s also an average runner, so he’s
not going to be cheated on the basepaths, which gives him a high ceiling offensively. Defensively, he
flashes very good tools. He’s an above-average defender with good range and a plus arm that he also
uses on the mound. With such good tools, it’s hard to believe that he’s not a top prospect, but as with
any prep prospect, a lot of what separates him from his higher-ranked classmates is polish, and he needs
some of it. He has the potential to go in the sixth to tenth round range to a team that will be patient
with his development. That being said, many scouts have all but written him off to Tennessee because
he’d be eligible again for the draft in just two years after turning 19 back in March.

sounds like another tough sign.

by npurcell on Jun 8, 2010 1:09 PM PDT reply actions

I guess the issue is that the CBA expires on December 11, 2011

And that it is somewhat likely that slotting will be on table.

BA review

Jesse Bosnik hit .387/.445/.696 with 11 homers, 20 doubles and 62 RBIs as a junior this spring, leading his team in each category. At 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, Bosnik has strength in his lefthanded swing, but it also gets long and his approach is pull-oriented. He projects as more of a doubles hitter at the next level. Bosnik committed 20 errors this spring and will not stick at shortstop in pro ball, though he has fringe-average arm and could find a home at third base. He’s an average athlete with average speed.

Doesn't scream "make up" from BA.

Eliopoulos and Blash had disastrous seasons. Eliopoulos, a Canadian lefthander who was the Blue Jays’ unsigned second-round pick last year, was at Chipola and never meshed with the coaching staff. He also never got going on the mound, walking 21 in 21 innings while posting an 8.44 ERA. He left the team in April and returned to Canada to pitch in an adult semi-pro league over the summer, but he clearly cost himself a shot at second-round money.

by bhsportsguy on Jun 8, 2010 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Did see anybody post Robert Coyle information so...

Even during his highly decorated high school career at Chatsworth High, Coyle spent time in the shadow of teammates Matt Dominguez and Mike Moustakas, both first-round picks in 2007. Due to signability concerns, he slipped to the 19th round (Indians) that year and attended Arizona. Coyle transferred to Fresno State last fall and had a solid year for the Bulldogs after getting a waiver from the NCAA that allowed him to play without sitting out a year. At 6-foot-1, 215 pounds, Coyle has an attractive left/left profile. His stats (.344/.366/.545, 10 homers) do not reflect it, but he has average power. He has good pitch recognition skills, which means he has a chance to be a high on-base percentage hitter, but needs to exercise more patience and plate discipline, which is also reflected in his stats (nine walks). He is not a burner, but an above-average runner and projects as an average left fielder.

Alex McRee

In the 14th round, the Dodgers will try to straighten out Georgia lefthander Alex McRee, whose fastball can reach the mid-90s but also at times reaches the backstop on the fly. Scouts reported that McRee had the yips at times this spring. McRee is an excellent student and potential medical school student, so there’s no guarantee he’ll play pro ball, but if he does, he’s got more upside than the average senior draft.

Bosnick hit .387/.445/.696 with 11 homers, 20 doubles and 62 RBIs as a junior this spring, leading his team in each category.

Kirkland has shown raw power potential since his freshman season, when he was in the lineup with Tennessee’s current first baseman, Cody Hawn. He has the tools for third, with arm strength and has the present strength in his 6-foot-1, 210-pound frame to contribute as a freshman if he makes it to Knoxville as part of Tennessee’s recruiting class. Some pro scouts would like to see him behind the plate.

by Ivdown on Jun 8, 2010 2:26 PM PDT reply actions

Arnold had a chance to be drafted in the top 10 rounds out of high school but instead had Tommy John surgery and slipped to the 36th round. He redshirted in 2007, eased his way back in 2008 and won eight games in 2009, then dominated in the New England Collegiate League last summer, ranking as the circuit’s No. 8 prospect. (As an aside, the No. 7 prospect on that list was Washington State lefthander Adam Conley, who worked at 86-88 last summer but earned plaudits for his projectable frame and easy arm action. His velocity has since jumped, and Marbut says he’s working at 90-94 in Wazzu’s closer role this spring).

Arnold attacks hitters with an 88-90 mph fastball with heavy sink and run.

“He can throw four pitches, he knows how to pitch and really knows how to compete,” Marbut said. “He can really break off the slider when he has to, so he can really make righthanded hitters swing at that, and when he’s got it going he can make lefthanded hitters swing and miss at his changeup.”

just read this on another msg board
Bumgarner goes ballistic, gets ejected

Madison Bumgarner was ejected from last night’s game against Sacramento. I got a great report from a fan in attendance. He said I could post his e-mail to me but asked that his name not be used. Based on what I’ve heard from other people, it sounds as though Bumgarner did enough to get himself suspended.

The eyewitness report: "We saw Madison Bumgarner pitch last night in Fresno. He was cruising along with a shutout until the sixth inning. Then, Eugenio Velez dropped a pop fly that should’ve been caught by the center fielder…and Bumgarner came unglued.

“Then he got into a beef with the first base umpire over a close play while covering first. Then got into a beef with the second base umpire over a pickoff play at second (in the seventh inning). The second base umpire tossed him after he lost his cool. He had to be physically restrained from the umpire by his teammates.

“On his way back to the dugout he turned around and threw the baseball into center field. He left with the score tied at 5-5. The Grizzlies scored in the bottom of the 6th so he still got the win.”

By the way, Bumgarner obviously was not considered for the Giants’ start in Cincinnati on Thursday. If they choose to bypass Todd Wellemeyer, Joe Martinez is the likeliest candidate. He is supposed to pitch that night in Tacoma.

I’m trying to ignore the hype. I’m aware of it but trying not to pay attention to it. I hope he pitches well; if he does, it’s good for baseball.

I saw it earlier today as well, somewhere. The city is already called Strasburg, VA, about 80 miles away from DC. They’re giving him some award (Freedom of the City, I think(, and if he comes to collect it (!), they’ll rename temporarily it to Stephen Strasburg, VA for a week. As announced by its mayor, obviously PR-seeking (and -getting).

that Felipe Lopez had started 15 of the last 19 Cards games before coming to LA. Mostly in place of Ryan at SS, and entirely at leadoff, supplanting Schumaker there.

really depends

if he only played baseball and strictly focused on pitching, his polish and feel he would have displayed would probably make him a top 10 pick. Now, that is just me being hypothetical. With the other variables in the equation minus a signability issue, definitely first round somewhere.

Question regarding: Dodger Stadium seating

I just bought two tickets for the 08/17/10 home game against the Rockies (Matt Kemp Bobblehead Night!) at Field Box 48, Row A, seats 8 -9.

Does anyone know where specifically those seats are located relative to the right field foul pole?

by Dr. Geek on Jun 8, 2010 4:00 PM PDT reply actions

I believe seat 1 would be the aisle seat closer to the bullpen

and the highest number in that row the aisle seat closer to first base. So I agree with bhsportsguy, you should be a few seats in on the foul side of the pole.

given the fact that it has now come out that Geffen himself doesn’t even want the team, his partner is trying to talk him into it? Or the fact that the Clippers have come out saying that Sterling has no interest in selling the team?
