Dylan Hernandez and Bill Shaikin are reporting that Ronald Belisario has left the to receive treatment in a substance abuse program. Belisario was placed on the restricted list earlier in the week, which removed him from both the 25 and 40 man rosters. Carlos Monasterios took his spot on the 25 man roster and was activated from the disabled list.

Of course this news

came as a complete shock to Joe Torre and the coaching staff.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

I would be scared to go out on a night in the town with Bel and Padilla.

Blogger Night Curse?

Last year on the very night of Blogger Night, Ned learned of Manny’s 50 game suspension. This year within 24 hours of this years Blogger night, Belisario was put on the restricted list. For the sake of the team I hope we do not have a Blogger Night in 2011.

Maybe the next Blogger Night should be at Petco, during a Padres/Rockies game?

People don't think it be like this, but it do.

Dylan kind of buries the Sunkin

story at the bottom of the Belisario story. I guess since the Times didn’t break the story they will basically ignore it.

So why did everyone think it was a kidnapping?

This guy loves booze and it was the most likely explanation.

by Tripon on Jul 10, 2010 9:45 AM PDT reply actions

Because he is from Venezuela and in that country athletes families are always targets for kidnapping

by Dodgermanramon on Jul 10, 2010 10:03 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

People with money. Belisario still is being paid on the rookie salary scale.

Going after that guy’s family means you’re not going to get a lot of money from him.

by Tripon on Jul 10, 2010 10:05 AM PDT up reply actions

what is he making about 400,000 or so ? Do you have an idea how much a 1/4 of that money is worth in Venezuela

by Dodgermanramon on Jul 10, 2010 10:07 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Do you? Do you know how exactly they were supposed to get it from Belisario?

by Tripon on Jul 10, 2010 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions

I think I do have some idea because I come from a country( Mexico) that is poor like Venezuela. In Mexico with 100,000 you can live like a king. As far as getting the money from Belli I’m sure that if one of his family members where in danger he would do what ever it took to get his loved one back including paying a good amount of money

by Dodgermanramon on Jul 10, 2010 10:17 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

You’re assuming that he has $100,000 he can dish out. That it would be enough for any potential kidnappers to release the families. That they would target somebody with relatively little money in the first place when he has much richer country men who already made millions.

As for Belisario doing whatever he can to pay the money. Uh… I’ll just say we differ on that. This guy is not a saint.

by Tripon on Jul 10, 2010 10:25 AM PDT up reply actions

when it comes to these kidnapping groups they look for people with money and people that are easy targets. You say why wouldn’t they target other people from Venezuela that are wealthier my answer to that is that the more money you make you are able to provide more and better security for your loved ones when you are in Belli’s situation you are not making enough to provide good security for your loved ones but yet make enough to draw attention to these kidnapping groups. As far as Belli not being a saint and there for thinking he wouldn’t do what he could to help his FAM i disagree with you I am no saint my self but trust me I would do anything I could to get a loved one back if I where in that situation

You're assuming kidnappers are incredibly smart

I would imagine there are a ton of retarded ones who think “hey, he must have a shit load of money, let’s get some”.

"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"

Could be risky

Because Belisario is foreign, and even more so because he already had trouble with the INS and getting a visa due to his DUI infraction, it may be that substance abuse treatment, and thus admitting to it, is riskier for him than for others. While everyone else can apparently go on the DL and be paid his salary, it may be that Belisario (and his agent, and the team) are trying to keep it quiet and unadmitted to avoid problems with the INS, which does not exactly have the highest standards of proof as needed by the courts. If indeed it;‘s a substance abuse problem, suppose it’s not alcohol but some drug that is illegal to possess. While others, even celebrities, seem to be able to avoid prosecution and just have it treated as the illness it is, it could be that merely being charged or apprehended could be enough for the INS to withdraw a visa and deport him. And even if it is alcohol, it may be that terms of his visa or simply having come to the attention of the INS after his DUI last year, might make him, by admitting to alcoholism needing treatment, liable to come under some sort black mark with the INS and even get deported. That could be why they are trying to keep it private, not admit, just deal with it, and forego the salary that comes with admission and being placed on the DL.

All speculation, but not all that unlikely.

Near as I can understand it, the union agreement lays out situations where a guy can be put on the restricted list during rehab, but the team can’t say anything to the public.

http://mlbplayers.mlb.com/pa/pdf/jda.pdf

The way I read it, if a guy is put on a rehab program and he doesn’t live up to it, the team can restrict him. But they can’t tell anybody.

People don't think it be like this, but it do.
