Dodgers, Ely Look to Secure Series Victory
With a 9-7 victory over the Chicago Cubs, the Dodger bats woke up and delivered the second win in as many games in this 4 game set against the Cubs. John Ely will be looking for similar run support today, as the Dodgers rookie has struggled as of late. John Ely will take his 4-6 record to the hill today on National Television and battle Tom Gorzelanny. Ely's ERA is up above 4 for the first time this year since his opening game but his peripherals remain fairly solid. Ely enters the game with an x-FIP of 3.86 which is built on his fantastic walk rate (2.56/9.)
Tom Gorzelanny enters the contest with a losing record of 3-5, but has a fairly solid stat line. His ERA is 3.31 and his x-FIP is 3.97. Gorzelanny has been striking out over 9 batters per nine innings which is his best of his career.
Bullpen News:
Dylan Hernandez and Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reported last night that Ronald Belisario was placed on the restricted list to receive treatment in a substance abuse program. At this time, no official announcement has been made by the Dodgers, but assuming Belisario is out for an extended period of time Dodger management will need to make some changes to firm up the bullpen. Ned Colletti has expressed a desire to fill that need via trade at some point, but one wonders if the Dodgers will consider bringing up Kenley Jansen or James McDonald to fill the role in the meantime (particularly instead of making a trade for bullpen relief like the one last year that is currently haunting the Dodgers.)
NL West Race:
With a Rockies victory over the Padres yesterday and with the Dodgers win over Chicago, the Rockies and Dodgers are now only 2 games back of the Padres in the NL West. As many on this board have maintained, it was only a matter of time until the Rockies starting making their push, and wouldn't be surprised if the two teams battling for 1st place in the division at the end of the year are Los Angeles and Colorado.

Could be risky for Belisario
LAT’d (as they say somewhere else):
Because Belisario is foreign, and even more so because he already had trouble with the INS getting a visa due to his DUI infraction, it may be that substance abuse treatment, and thus admitting to it, is riskier for him than for others. While everyone else can apparently go on the DL and be paid his salary, it may be that Belisario (and his agent, and the team) are trying to keep it quiet and unadmitted to avoid problems with the INS, which does not exactly have the highest standards of proof as needed by the courts. If indeed it;‘s a substance abuse problem, suppose it’s not alcohol but some drug that is illegal to possess. While others, even celebrities, seem to be able to avoid prosecution and just have it treated as the illness it is, it could be that merely being charged or apprehended could be enough for the INS to withdraw a visa and deport him. And even if it is alcohol, it may be that terms of his visa or simply having come to the attention of the INS after his DUI last year, might make him, by admitting to alcoholism needing treatment, liable to come under some sort of black mark with the INS and even get deported. That could be why they are trying to keep it private, not admit it, just deal with it, and forego the salary that comes with admission and being placed on the DL.
If they wanted to keep a drugs problem quiet because of immigration, couldn’t they just DL him for some other reason?
People don't think it be like this, but it do.

#Dodgers lineup: Furcal 6 Carroll 5 Ethier 9 Kemp 8 Loney 3 Belliard 4 Ellis 2 Paul 7 Ely 1
You sure about that Belliard 4 (2B) and Carroll 5 (3B)? Not the other way around? Where’s this coming from?
House money all the way, damn. We need Reed!

I'm kinda glad that Casey Blake gets a rest though
Belliard deserves some at bats here and there. It’s not like Carroll is a slouch either. Would like to see Paul do some damage today, put one more nail in GA’s “coffin” as it were.

6.08 ERA, 265 BAA. Just 1 HR though.

Who knew that the two deepest teams coming into the WC would play in the championship game?
Hey Craig
That tweet you posted about the Cards adding Oprah and Rachel Ray for personality brought me on the floor.
Hah, Thanks.
That MLBTR tweet was served up on a tee for me though ;-)

Cricket
I know no one here cares (unless black-and-blue reads TBLA, I don’t think so), but England have just lost a one-day match to Bangladesh, first time Bangladesh has ever beaten England in any form of cricket. Very tense at the end, with England having got all their batsmen out, so a guy who broke his toe earlier in the match and had to go to hospital came hobbling out, bandaged up (far more injured than Gibson here in 88), because you can’t substitute batsmen in cricket but someone else can run for you, with just 6 balls to go, 10 runs (quite feasible, but requiring some daring batting attempts), and got out with just 4 balls left, trying for a big shot. Well done, Bangladesh.
This would be a better read.
If I understood cricket. But I bet Bangladesh are partying like rockstars right now.

They are. They thought they had won at the end of the penultimate “over” (never mind, too long to explain), and had dnac ed around and pulled the wickets out. That’s because they that thought the injured batsman – who had broken his foot batting early in the innings and gone to hospital – was permanently retired. Then out he hobbled, with his runner in tow, and they had to put everything back together and try again. It was actually the turn of the other batsman (in cricket there are two batsman up at opposite ends of the batting pitch, who alternate, again complicated to explain in detail) , who managed to get 4 of the needed 10 runs in his first two tries. (If he only got 1 run in one of his attempts, the injured guy would have to bat). He really was going to have to attempt a “boundary” (something like a home run) to be sure of reaching the total, and when he did, he got caught, and the Bangladeshis won. Apparently, they’re all dancing wildly around. They’ve been a “first class” cricket country for, oh, 25 years or so now, I think, playing all the major cricket playing countries and have won against good teams before. But never against England. They’re going nuts.
No, they’ve only been a full “Test match” team for 10 years, and 13 years for this one-day form of international cricket. They usually lose, and have never won a “Test match” (the long form of cricket) except in very unusual circumstances, and there have been many calls for their Test status to be revoked. They’ve done a bit better in the one-day forms of cricket, but still, they usually lose. This is a big day for them.
I’ll take Ricky (I’d take Haren too, but they’d want too much.)

all these reports of scouts
getting my hopes up. Last night via twitter, Dylan H giving a heavy dose of reality to any thoughts of taking on salary : (
Some reports have said they would take on salary, so why believe Dylan over the others?
by Michael White on Jul 10, 2010 11:25 AM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, they would have paid all of Lee’s salary.
by silverwidow on Jul 10, 2010 11:25 AM PDT up reply actions
More I think in regards to gigantic salaries like Oswalts
I do believe they would take on salary as small as Lee’s.
and besides most reports are reporting Dodgers cant take on any salary
who besides Tommy Lasorda has said we can take on money?
General Manager Ned Colletti met with owner Frank McCourt in the Dodgers’ dugout before Tuesday’s game. Colletti would not discuss what players the Dodgers might be targeting but said he believes McCourt would consider adding salary on a case-by-case basis.

I don’t know, you could just rely on what Dylan’s sources who are familiar with the organization’s thinking have to say on the matter.
by Michael White on Jul 10, 2010 11:36 AM PDT up reply actions
Playing devil’s advocate, should you really trust a GM who has made trades that were ‘salary’ neutral by giving up better prospects in order for teams to pick up the veteran’s salaries?
Trust nobody in that case. We have people reporting things on both sides. Like Silverwidow said, logic dictates that they could handle Lee or Nolasco’s contract.
Yes, they will have to offset the Oswalt contract somehow.
by Michael White on Jul 10, 2010 11:46 AM PDT up reply actions
Most teams would have to offset the Oswalt contract
Rudimentary creatures of flesh and blood, you touch my mind, fumbling in ignorance, incapable of understanding.
Ricky Nolasco sounds more doable, he’s doesn’t reach FA until 2012, and he’s only making $3.5 million this year.
He probably makes $6 million next year, and $9 in his final yaer.
I like Nolasco too but some of the writers out there are saying he, too, will cost a lot in prospects
Would rather only get him if he’d just cost a couple of prospects I’m not as wedded to
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
The guy with a 96 career OPS+, who has a 4.55 ERA this year
Stuff wise he’s pretty good, results wise, he’s Joe Blanton.
It shouldn’t cost that much to acquire him from a Marlins team that will probably need to cut payroll fairly soon.
That’s why I like him. Peripherals are good, ERA is shitty. Shouldn’t cost too many prospects and he could thrive in DS.
by Michael White on Jul 10, 2010 11:47 AM PDT up reply actions
Out of curiosity
Mostly because I am wondering why, but why would he do better in DS than Landsharktankdolphin house stadium? Or do you mean better than all the hitter friendly parks in the East?

I want
But wouldn’t Haren be number 1? Kershaw has been better this year, but I’m not sure with Haren in Dodger Stadium that Haren wouldn’t be better.
Haren in a pitchers park makes my mouth water…

Prospects for Pitchers Department
Rotoworld: Orioles optioned 3B Josh Bell to Triple-A Norfolk.
The move was expected. Bell hit just .200 for the O’s, struck out eight times in 15 at-bats and had started just one out of the last five games. The future is bright for this youngster, but he he’ll have to wait to become a regular in the big leagues. Look for him to return in September, if not sooner.

Manny rehab tonight
Looking at the schedules, it seems that only AAA teams observe the 3-day All Star break, but other minor leagues don’t. A+ and AA just happen to have Tuesday off between series (could be planned, or coincidence) but otherwise are playing. So Manny could have a second rehab game for Inland Empire tomorrow or Monday. I remember after the suspension he didn’t want more than one or so, but that must have had a lot to do with the publicity at the time. I sort of hope he takes a second one, he tends to come back slowly after breaks.
They're meh
There must be something better!

First half MVP (I know there's a couple days left, but I figured I'd say it now)
First instinct would be to say Ethier, but holy crap, how can it not be Furcal?
.336/.383/.519 6 hr 35 rbi 48 runs 14/17 in SB in 56 games
Not to mention very good defense all from SS.
Furcal is hitting like we’d expect Matt Kemp to be hitting…dayum.
First Half MVP:
1. Furcal
2. Ethier
3. Loney
First Half Cy Young:
1. Kershaw
2. Kuroda
3. Broxton (Billingsley right behind him)
Thoughts?
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
no argument here
Tho its a bit of a toss up between Loney and Dre. Loney has been quietly and consistently putting up hits. Dre has been affected by that pinky
Loney's been a rock
But Ethier is incredibly streaky. It’s hard to say, but Loney’s played the whole season as well.
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
According to WAR, the next most valuable player after Furcal was Kershaw.
Billingsley, Kuroda and Broxton all had a WAR of 1.9, which is higher than Loney or Ethier.
by Michael White on Jul 10, 2010 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm the type of guy who gives MVP to hitters
So I wouldn’t have included a pitcher in this unless they were at the top of the league in WAR right now. Josh Johnson would be the MVP of this team right now, same with Liriano, Halladay, Lee, and a handful of other pitchers. I would have put Kershaw right behind Loney if I had done a top 5, though.
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
Furcal
And it’s not even close. A shortstop who’s putting up a .900+ OPS is a dream. Add his range and speed…

Matt Kemp. He took the brutal taunts from a tryant GM in order to deflect blame to the other players.
I did think Kemp would make the 5th spot in my ballot
But damn, his defense has been so bad looking. I would like to see his average raised to at least .280, which I think he will get to by the end of the year, but right now, I’m not sure he would be higher than 6th or 7th.
Though Ned is a retard and may have hurt his confidence.
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"

Good for Belisario
Baseball has always had a substance abuse problem that extended beyond performance enhancing drugs that has been swept under the rug. It’s good to see someone trying to help himself out. This isn’t a great move for his career in the immediate short term, but I can’t help but think it is the best move for him long term, and the best move for the Dodgers who have have control over 4 more years of that long term.
When the restricted list decision was announced, I thought this was by far the most likely scenario. The speculation was all over the place, and I guess anything was possible, but Occam’s razor seemed to point toward a guy who had a history of substance abuse up to his old tricks rather than a kidnapping or whatever.
I’m a recovering addict, and making the decision to go to rehab was the hardest thing to do at the time. It’s an admission to everyone that the problem is real and can no longer be ignored. It was also the best thing I’ve ever done.
I hope for the best for Ronald. Good for him, and frankly, good for the Dodgers if they had any part in influencing him to go get his life together, even at the expense of his immediate baseball career.
