7/10/10 Minor League Report – Withrow & Martin Get Early Hooks
AAA – Starting pitcher Alberto Bastardo got absolutely lit up in the Isotopes 13 to 1 loss to the Omaha Royals. Bastardo allowed 10 hits and 10 earned runs in just 3 innings in what was his worst AAA start thus far with the Dodgers. Cory Wade also didn’t do himself any favors by allowing 3 runs in 2 innings of work. The good news, however, is that Lindblom rebounded with 2 scoreless innings of relief. The Albuquerque offense was very weak besides John Lindsay’s 3 for 4 efforts, including his 4th homer in the last 3 games.
AA – Chris Withrow got the start but lasted just one inning. In that inning he allowed 4 hits, 2 walks, and 2 runs, so I think that he was pulled from the game due to his poor performance and not because of an injury. In addition, the recap of this game from the Lookouts website did not mention anything about a Withrow injury. Tim Sexton picked up in the 2nd inning and pitched pretty well, giving up just 3 runs in 6 innings. Cole St. Clair pitched a perfect 8th, but Kenly Jansen finally struggled as he allowed 2 walks, 1 hit, and 2 runs in his inning work (although he did still end up striking out the side). The Lookouts only had one extra base hit in their 7 to 3 loss, which was a double by Jaime Pedroza. Trayvon Robinson went 2 for 5, and Jerry Sands went 1 for 3 with an outfield assist.
High A – Ethan Martin started for the 66ers, but lasted just 3 innings and picked up the loss in the Inland Empire 5 for 3 defeat. Even though Martin only gave up 2 hits, he allowed 2 walks and 3 runs and struck out just 1. Miguel Sanfler had his best outing of the season as he pitched 5 innings of 3 hit relief, but it wasn’t enough. A couple of rehabbing Dodgers played in this game as Manny went 0 for 3 and Brad Ausmus went 3 for 3. In terms of offensive prospects, only Alfredo Silverio had a good game with his 2 for 4 effort.
A – Matt Magill followed Allen Webster’s lead by walking 5 batters, but he only allowed 1 earned run in 7.1 innings as the Loons won on Saturday 4 to 2. Steven Ames picked up his 4th save of the season with yet another perfect inning, including 2 K’s. The winning runs in this game actually scored in the 9th inning on Christian Lara’s inside the park homer. Other Great Lakes players who had multi hit games were Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Austin Yount, who both went 2 for 4.
Rookie Ogden – The Raptors pitching staff only allowed 5 hits in this game as Ogden won this game 5 to 2. 2010 29th round pick Red Patterson pitched 5 strong innings as he allowed just 3 hits and 1 run while striking out 7. Nick Gaudi and Shawn Tolleson closed out the game with great relief, and in 8.2 innings of work, Tolleson has a K per 9 of 16.62. On offense, Jonathan Garcia continued his hot hitting by going 2 for 4. Pedro Guerrero also chipped in with a RBI double that plated 2 runs.
Rookie Arizona – Former DSL players Gustavo Gomez and Carlos De Aza got spanked for 4 runs each as the Arizona Dodgers lost 9 to 4. The good news, however, is that Nick Akins continued to make a mockery of the Arizona League with his 6th homer of the young season. Akins went 2 for 5 in total and is now hitting .433 for the season. Tae-Hyeok Nam also had an RBI double in this game.
DSL – The Dominican Dodgers were scheduled for a double header on Saturday, but their box scores were not posted at the time of this report.

I know I'm jumping the gun
But can it be coincidence that both Martin and Withrow were pulled tonight so early? I know they both struggled, but they wouldn’t go 3 and 1 innings for just a little trouble…I’m all excited and worried now, lol.
"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"
I kinda agree with Ivdown
More about Martin than Withrow. I dont think Withrow gets promoted to AAA, but i could see Martin, maybe.
Now, I know that teams are really cautious with prospects and therefore, if they think they are going to have a horrible game, remove them, but common. 1 inning for Withrow? 3 for Martin? wtf…
One last thing, its amazing how few hits are given up and yet they give up multiple runs… Jansen, Martin and Withrow today.. is this a their stuff was so bad they were walking/wild pitching guys around the bases and then giving up one big hit, or is it defense, or a combination? I mean, Jansen gave up one hit, and two runs, Martin, two hits, 3 runs..

I think they just took Withrow out
so he could get started back on his trip to Texas for their All-Star Break
As ibleedbloo mentioned in another thread, Martin was likely pulled because something was wrong physically. The trainer came out the inning before.
The Withrow one inning was strange, but they have done this before when Kershaw was in AA. It’s probably just an innings limit. Sexton, another starter, was able to go 6 innings, so this seems planned.
Another reason why the innings limit is dumb
Teams always say “160 innings” or some arbitrary number, but if those are 160 hard innings then you’ve defeated the purpose. They really should figure 14 pitches per inning multiplied by their requested innings limit (160 for argument’s sake) and limit the guy to 2240 pitches that year.
Can Tolleson get a promotion to A
Hes too good for R league

The only thing I took from Withrow and Martin being pulled early
is that they sucked.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Martin was missing the zone quite abit.
His curve was nasty he had trouble locating the fastball. it seemed like he was getting better after a rough 1st then the trainer came out and Sanfler got up. Not sure but it may have been a blister. That Ausmus guy was stroking it, I think he is a helluve a prospect and I bet he plays in the bigs into his 40s.
