The home run shouldn't have counted?

The second run. Panda tagged loney before Carroll scored, but they counted the run.

3rd out recorded via tag at 3B, ruled after Carroll crossed the plate (even though he didn’t yet touch the plate). Dodgers steal extra run

by Eric Stephen on Jul 19, 2010 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Gound ball to Panda, who decided to go after Loney coming to 3rd instead of throwing over to 1st. He tags Loney, but the home plate umpire counted the run coming home, saying the tag was made after Loney was tagged. It was a bad call, but Panda made a stupid decision not to get the force.

It's just speculation...
“The one team I keep wondering about if they drop a few games back, if the Dodgers start dropping back, would they talk about Andre Ethier. He’s going to make $10-$12 million next year, the coaching staff feels with their bizarre ownership situation, they don’t want to pay Ethier and might trade him now. That would be a fascinating guy to go after.”

If they throw out the batter at first on a grounder, though, it doesn’t matter if a runner at third is forced or scores first.

Because on this play no runner was forced after the catch. If Ethier had let the ball drop and somehow was able to get a double play at second and first then the runner at third could have crossed the plate and be sitting in the dugout and the run wouldn’t count.

I finally found the rule/play in question

Under Section 2; Definition of Terms:

A FORCE PLAY is a play in which a runner legally loses his right to occupy a base by reason of the batter becoming a runner.
Example: Not a force out. One out. Runner on first and third. Batter flies out. Two out. Runner on third tags up and scores. Runner on first tries to retouch before throw from fielder reaches first baseman, but does not get back in time and is out. Three outs. If, in umpire’s judgment, the runner from third touched home before the ball was held at first base, the run counts.
