Dodgers Hope To Avoid Unlucky Seven In Finale With Giants

It's been real, A.J.

The fallout from last night's debacle was handed down today by Major League Baseball. Clayton Kershaw was suspended for five games for hitting Aaron Rowand in the seventh inning, and Joe Torre and bench coach Bob Schaefer were suspended for one game each.Kershaw plans to appeal his suspension.

Torre will serve his suspension tonight, per Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times, while Schaefer will serve his tomorrow night. Somebody please double-check those lineup cards tonight.

Speaking of last night, Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle spoke to an MLB official who said the umpires erred in the ninth inning last night:

The official said that the rule requiring a pitcher to be removed after two mound visits should have been superseded by a comment underneath Rule 8.06 that says if two mound visits occur while the same batter is up, the umpires must eject the manager and require the pitcher to face that batter. Only then, should the pitcher be removed.

The mistake was discovered as the umpiring crew engaged in its normal postmortem with league umpiring evaluators.

Had the Dodgers protested the game, there is a chance the protest would have been upheld, and the game replayed. But the league official said the Dodgers neglected to protest the game.

Chad Billingsley and Barry Zito have started against one another twice before. Last May, the Giants broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the seventh inning off Billingsley, handing him his first loss of the season while giving Zito his first win. This year, on June 28, both allowed two runs in six innings in a game won by a two-run home run by Casey Blake in the eighth inning.

Left-handed reliever Jack Taschner has had his contract purchased by the Dodgers, per Hernandez. A.J. Ellis was optioned to Triple A Albuquerque to make room for Taschner.

Taschner was signed to a minor league deal on June 28, and pitched 10 games in Albuquerque, allowing four runs, all solo home runs, while walking nobody and striking out four.

The Dodgers are now carrying 13 pitchers, including three southpaw relievers, and there are 39 players on the 40-man roster, not including Ronald Belisario.

Notes

  • Blake has struggled since that home run 23 days ago, with nine hits in 55 at-bats, hitting just .164/.266/.273
  • The Dodger bullpen since the All-Star break has 16 walks and just six strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings
  • Rafael Furcal has 16 hits in 31 at-bats against the Giants this season, hitting .516/.571/.839

Why does the pitcher get ejected anyway

when the manager visits the mound twice? What did the pitcher do wrong?

by berkowit28 on Jul 21, 2010 4:01 PM PDT reply actions

If the manager could visit the mount whenever he wanted Cardinals games would take 11 hours.

by regfairfield on Jul 21, 2010 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions

No. I understand why the manager gets ejected. Why does the pitcher get ejected?

by berkowit28 on Jul 21, 2010 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions

The pitcher isn’t ejected, just removed. The rule is in place to prevent time delays and stalling with multiple mound visits

by Eric Stephen on Jul 21, 2010 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmmm. There’s a difference between “ejected” and “removed”? As in “not subject to further penalties”, I guess, like Kershaw getting suspended. I’m still not sure I understand why the pitcher gets removed, though.

by berkowit28 on Jul 21, 2010 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions

the pitcher gets removed as a penalty, to prevent multiple mound visits and time delays for no reason.

If you make a second mound visit, there is a cost.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 21, 2010 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions

So, could Loney and Broxton switch, Loney throws one pitch and then Broxton takes over again?

by robotmadeofnails on Jul 21, 2010 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions

No, you’d be removed from the game.

there's gotta be some technicality that prevents this

but it’s an intriguing loophole…

Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?

by bucknellbruin on Jul 21, 2010 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm curious

if Broxton were to go play another position, someone else pitches, could he come back since he never actually left the game?

Just a reminder, fans, comin' up is our "Die-hard Night" here at the stadium. Free admission to anyone who was actually alive the last time the Dodgers won a pennant.

by G.Scott on Jul 21, 2010 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah exactly

that’s what i wondered. According to the rules, I think that’s allowed. I’m guessing there’s something that prevents a pitcher that’s been “removed” by the umpires from throwing another pitch

Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?

by bucknellbruin on Jul 21, 2010 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions

but he wouldn't be removed from the game

just removed from the pitcher’s spot. If he played 1st base for a pitch, and Loney threw an intentional ball, could they then switch back?

Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?

by bucknellbruin on Jul 21, 2010 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions

well i'm pretty sure you can do that

it’s just in this case, i think the rule is that the pitcher has to leave the game. You couldn’t just put him in another position, even if you didn’t intend to bring him back to the mound. At least that’s how I understand the rule.

Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?

by bucknellbruin on Jul 21, 2010 4:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Yea, this is the key. If the a new pitcher just needs to come in, you could do a swap, but if you actually have to remove Broxton from the game, he cannot stay on the field.

by robotmadeofnails on Jul 21, 2010 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions

has to be removed from the game

by Eric Stephen on Jul 21, 2010 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks. Still not sure I get the reason. I guess it’s like a penalty for the whole team? The pitcher did nothing wrong, just the manager, but the team is getting punished for the manager’s delaying behavior. And it’s weird that a different coach can come to the mound once each, just not the manager (or anyone) twice. How about if Honeycutt comes out once, then the next time he’s acting manager because the umps have already ejected the manager and two other coaches. Can he come out to take out the pitcher, as acting manager, without getting ejected homself for coming out (as a single person) twice?

by berkowit28 on Jul 21, 2010 4:23 PM PDT up reply actions

The rule is in place

for normal reasons. Without the rule, you could have multiple coaching visits just to stall for time as a reliever gets ready, or just to bog down the game in general.

As it stands now, players can make unlimited mound visits so the time delays could still happen of course, but that’s the intent of the rule.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 21, 2010 4:26 PM PDT up reply actions

There’s probably a practical reason for letting players go out there. If they started ejecting catchers, play would have to stop pretty soon.

by berkowit28 on Jul 21, 2010 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions

it’s the same as the pitching coach going to talk to the pitcher then the manager coming out to take out the pitcher. This just so happened to be the same coach at the same time.

Just a reminder, fans, comin' up is our "Die-hard Night" here at the stadium. Free admission to anyone who was actually alive the last time the Dodgers won a pennant.

Rule 8.06 of the Official Baseball Rules stipulates a trip to the mound begins when a manager or coach crosses the foul line and ends when he leaves the 18-foot dirt circle surrounding the pitcher’s rubber. Returning to the dirt constitutes a second trip, at which point the pitcher must be removed.

Mattingly stopped and walked back onto the dirt below the mound, giving further instructions to Loney as he went.

"No, no, no!" Mattingly heard plate umpire Adrian Johnson shout. "You can’t go back."

By then, however, Mattingly had covered the two steps back onto the mound.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy came out of the first-base dugout, pointing.

"He can’t do that!" Bochy yelled.

Four years ago, as manager of the San Diego Padres, Bochy caught then-Dodgers manager Grady Little on the same technicality. Brad Penny(notes) was the pitcher.

This time, Broxton trudged from the mound.

"I really didn’t realize I was off the dirt," Mattingly said. "Rules are rules, you know? Obviously at that point it’s my responsibility not to take a step off."

Mattingly also had an embarrassing snafu when he filled in as manager during spring training while Torre was in Taiwan. The lineup card posted in the clubhouse didn’t match the one given to the umpires, and the Dodgers batted out of order. This mistake, however, involved footwork, not paperwork.

"I’ve had to catch myself a few times on that," Bochy said of fighting the urge to return to the mound after walking away.

If he wants to pout let him, he’s not a star, he’s streaky sunofagun who hasn’t hit shit since he hurt his little ole pinky. God knows Torre doesn’t have the balls to confront a player but Schafer or Bowa can do it. Hell this coaching staff can even tell GA that he’s done or Sherrill. Grow some why don’t they.

Last word on this

I think the only reason Ethier has not played left since 08 is because no opportunity has arisen. Usually it is Kemp and Manny out there with him, so he plays right by default. During the 09 Manny suspension Pierre received most of the playing time and we all know Ethier is better suited to right than Pierre.

I think most of you are assuming Ethier is offended by left field and Torre is scared to move him. We don’t really know.

Eric, can you explain “optional waivers”? When are they used and what are the ramifications? Thanks.

by silverwidow on Jul 21, 2010 4:28 PM PDT reply actions

Baseball Prospectus had an article

earlier this month:

Optional major-league waivers are required when optioning a player who is more than three calendar years removed from his first appearance on a major-league roster. This procedure allows a club to send a player to the minor leagues while keeping him on the 40-man roster. Because optional waivers are revocable, players usually clear in this scenario. In the unlikely event a player is claimed, his club may not option him to the minor leagues, and any subsequent waiver request during the same period becomes irrevocable.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 21, 2010 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe to get Oswalt
they move Werth for Wade Davis, and then Wade Davis to Houston for Oswalt. The Phillies can’t trade Dominic Brown and they have nothing else Houston should be interested in. This gets Brown in the Lineup and Oswalt in the rotation. Rays get Werth but at quiet a price to their future, but they can make that back up by sticking Hellickson (who is better then Davis) into the current rotation while snagging two numbers ones when Werth leaves. Didn't we release him

only to re-sign him and then lose him in the Rule 5 draft to the Yankees?

BTW Table

While others were irritated with your sticking to your guns and making them make the same point over and over again I was quite impressed with your ability to irritate just about all of our regular posters and not run away in a huff. That takes a special skill and I welcome you to the TBLA blog. Things get a little to complacent around here without posters like you. I mean when I saw we had added 230 comment to the little M White story I thought something big had happened only to find out 230 comments were basically the same five comments over and over. That is how we waste our time here. Your first day here will be long remembered.

but does anyone have any good advice for stretching out a fitted new era hat? I have been wearing an adjustable hat for about as long as I can remember, but the classic blue dodger new eras look so good I had get one.

it fits almost perfectly except for the face that its just a bit too tight right near my forehead, and leaves a bit of red mark where the bill of the hat bends, will that soften and stretch with time?

(and don’t worry, the hat has all the stickers removed and the bill is not straight like a piece of cardboard)
